Glen Cove Big Red features new uniforms, coach

A

By J.D. FREDA fter 27 seasons, Glen Cove football has a new head coach. As the seasoned Pete Kopecky informed the school the 2018 would be his last, his longtime assistant Steve Tripp stepped up as the new head coach. Tripp is also the head lacrosse coach. Tripp’s main focus is to improve on the base of what Kopecky left. Glen Cove finished 1-7 last season, but was involved in a number of close games that slipped out of grasp late in the fourth quarters. Although Tripp has been on the coaching staff for over a quarter-century, he was a bit surprised at first at the amount of work his predecessor did in preparation for the season. That onus now falls on him. “I always knew he worked really hard, but I didn’t know the extent of what he did throughout the whole year, because during spring and summer I would really be focused on lacrosse and then I would show up in August ready for preseason camp,” Tripp said. “There has been kind of a natural transition from his system to mine because I’ve been his assistant for so long, but I had to step up to obviously take more responsibility once I became the head coach.” Luckily for Tripp he will keep the majority of his team from a season ago, but claims that he wants to bring the electricity back to Big Red Stadium in his first year at the helm. “We didn’t change too much,” Tripp said. “I’ve been examining what we’ve been doing over the past 25 years and I want to bring that fun and excitement back to the program.” Fun usually accompanies winning, and Glen Cove will have a shot at success with four capable returning linemen in RJ Alma, Phil Aguilar, Mikael Barajas, and Brandon Rivera. Alma, Aguilar and Rivera all transition to the wrestling mats in the winters and have tireless work ethics, which will

4 — September 12, 2019

bode well for the Big Red front line this season. Gilbert Reyes will round out the offensive line, which Tripp believes will be the anchor. “Our success is based on them protecting our quarterback,” Tripp said. Glen Cove’s quarterback is once again Devon Christopher, who possesses quality size for a quarterback at 6-foot1, 220 pounds. Christopher threw for around 700 yards and rushed for an additional 400 last season, making him a capable dual threat. Christopher will enter his third year taking snaps for the Big Red. In his sophomore season, Kopecky began to enter Christopher into games behind then-starter Joey Grella. Now, Christopher looks to show the work he has been putting in over the offseason. “He has got a great, great arm, but we’ve been teaching him that sometimes you have to temper that power behind his throws and not throw fastballs on a 4-yard pass,” Tripp said. “At that point it becomes dodge ball and balls start bouncing off guys left and right. He also has been working on letting the play develop and keeping his head downfield. He is mobile, but he loves to pass.” Christopher’s receiving corps will include senior Peter Rodriguez, who will line up out wide. “He is a solid receiver that runs good inside pass patterns,” Tripp said. Two slot receivers that will also be motioned in to the backfield at times are Skylar Wilburg and Victor Vaughan, whom will complement Rodriguez.

Vaughan is the younger brother of Michael, an explosive running back for the Big Red a season ago. Vaughan will look to provide a spark for this offense both catching passes and carrying the ball. Defensively, Tripp admits in recent years the philosophy has always been to send as many blitzers as possible. This year, Tripp will try to employ a more balanced and disciplined defensive scheme. “We are not an overly large team,” Tripp said. “We have got a lot of guys who are 160-165 pounds, so we are going to rely on our secondary.” Although the core of Glen Cove’s roster stays the same, the Big Red will be wearing a slightly different red this year. Glen Cove changed from its traditional cardinal red to a scarlet red. As the red becomes brighter in 2019, Tripp hopes that so too is his team’s future. However, he is still realistic as to the level of competition his team will play. “They call it the ‘black & blue’ conference for a reason,” Tripp said. “Everyone is tough. We’re looking to surprise some people.”

Eletto, a 6-foot-1 upperclassman with college baseball prospects, is a more than capable defensive end. “He’s great on the strong side end,” Neilly said. “We try to funnel their offense to his side, and opposing offenses try to run away from his side.” Neilly also lauded Eletto for his ability to bring the team together. “Bouncing back from last year, Eletto motivates everyone in practice. an offensive line that will need to excel in run blocking, as most of Conference III holds a power football mentality. For the Vikings to stay competitive, they will need to play a balanced brand of football. When they take the ball out of DeSimone’s hands, a very capable trio of running backs will pick up the slack. Senior Will Scarola returns after a supremely successful individual junior season. In 2018, he totaled roughly 800 all-purpose yards and scored 7 touchdowns. Scarola enters his senior season already committed to play college baseball at Hofstra University. Senior Ryan Murphy and junior Forrest Demetri will be change-of-pace backs that will look to keep defenses guessing. Murphy and Demetri are both lacrosse players with crafty moves and quick feet. Maximo Marra, younger brother of former Vikings WR1 Luca, will look to keep the receiving production high for North Shore.

“We won’t skip a beat with Max there,” Agovino said. “He’s got a little more height, he’s always in the right spot, and has the ability to split coverage and find a seam.” The 6-foot, 175-pound Marra is physically bigger than his older brother, and plays differently. “Luca had these shifty moves and would take a short pass and try to

make the linebackers miss,” Agovino said. “Max will run those routes into the holes of the defense for DeSimone to find.” Defensively, the Vikings are going to look to come out aggressively in their 4-4 scheme. With Franco at defensive end on the blind side, 6’4” Aiden Mandell will play strong side DE looking to use his height to knock down passes. “Our mantra this year is D.I.G.,” Agovino said. “Dignity, integrity, greatness. That mindset will make us successful.” HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

If he could hit that hole with his speed, he could create some big plays.” Hornosky and Maldonado will provide a “thunder and lightning” dynamic in the backfield, reminiscent of a Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs backfield for the New York Giants. Senior Eddie Clark will line up in the slot, but Ruskowski is even more excited for his defensive prowess at the cornerback position. “I think he could be a lockdown corner,” Ruskowski said. “We’ve seen him in some summer 7-on-7’s against other schools, and he has the ability to cover double routes. I’m excited to see what he could do for us defensively.” Oyster Bay will open the season at home versus Island Trees, a team that lost to the Baymen and struggled in Conference IV a year ago. “The main prep now is working as a team as a whole, knowing where we have to be and what we have to do,” Ruskowski said. “We’re not worrying about the end result right now, we’re worried about what it is going to take to get us to that result.” The end goal, though, is to get past the eight regular season games and make the playoffs. The changes the Baymen made offensively, namely putting the ball in the hands of O’Toole and defensively relying on a solid secondary to negate the big play, will look to be the catalysts for another successful season. “We want to play that ninth game,” Ruskowski said. “Who wants it more late? That’s what we’re asking ourselves now so we don’t have to in those late-game situations.”
