ClaRke Rams motivated after tough 2018 ending By DAVID WEINGRAD
R
eflecting on the 2018 football season stirs mixed emotions for Clarke head coach Tim O’Malley. On one hand, he’s elated by his team’s 7-1 regular season that included a victory against the eventual Conference IV champions. But it’s the team’s final game that evokes the strongest memories, when they were upset in the first round by a West Hempstead team they had defeated handily one month earlier. Several months later, as the Rams prepare for the new season, memories from that final game still haven’t faded. “It’s definitely been a motivating factor for us,” said O’Malley. “We felt like we left a little meat on the bone last year, and we’ve refocused ourselves into correcting some of the things we did wrong.” He added, quite bluntly: “We’re a little bit angry and a little bit hungry.” While the Rams will be champing at the bit to open strong out of the gate, they’ll do so without three key skill players they lost to graduation: Quarterback Anthony Caputo, and two-way starters Sean Russell and Arton Dalipi. With different personnel, O’Malley said the Rams will get back to their roots with a Wing-T offense. At the helm is expected to be senior Chris Giardino, who backed up Caputo last year but missed time because of an injury. A run-heavy, option-based offense is a style that will suit Giardino well, O’Malley said. “He’s a great leader,” the coach said of his quarterback. “A real student of the game.” Stepping in as the primary running back will be Lucas Abbatiello, who last year was named

Defensively, junior Anthony Rodrigurez is a quality run stuffer. Ranked third out of 12 teams in Conference IV, the Rams’ opener will be Sept. 14 against East Rockaway. Emotions will be high that day as the school will honor longtime, beloved head coach John Boyle, who passed away in the spring of 2018 following 30 years as the head of the football program. Boyle’s LuCAS AbbAtIeLLo family will be in attendance and a statue will be dedicated in his honor. “We’ve always spoken Perhaps no other team with our players about honoring is ready to turn the page and the game the way Coach Boyle begin a new season than the wanted to,” said O’Malley, who Rams. East Rockaway Staying healthy a key for rebuilt Rocks By ANDREW MCCLURE
E
ast Rockaway comes off a solid season that saw it host and knock off Malverne in an opening round playoff game before falling to eventual Long Island champion Cold Spring Harbor 34-22 in the Conference IV semifinals. The Rocks, who finished the campaign at 6-4, were just one of two teams to defeat Cold Spring Harbor during the regular season. A slew of players were lost to graduation, including the team’s starting quarterback and some talented linemen. East Rockaway, which is seeded seventh, has some skilled returnees, but is lacking when it comes to depth. Cold Spring Harbor, Seaford, Locust Valley, and Clarke are among the teams that are expected to fight for league supremacy. Long-time Rocks head coach Russ Pajer understands that he won’t have the luxury of a deep, experienced roster in 2019. “We’re asking a lot of young guys who haven’t played at the varsity level to take on some important roles,” Pajer said. “There are a lot of positions where we just don’t have backups, so staying healthy is going to be very important. We’re not deep at all. So far, things are going pretty well. The guys are working hard to get better.” Junior Julian Palma takes over at quarterback. Palma, the JV signal-caller in 2018, is experienced at running the team’s double-wing attack, but will need time to grasp some of the wrinkles that are put in at the varsity level. Senior Caleb Alvarez, a threeyear varsity performer is the team’s go-to running back. Alvarez has speed, elusiveness and strength to go along with the will to pick up the extra yard. He’ll play both

Kennedy Cougars must overcome large roster overhaul By BRIAN KACHARABA
K
ennedy just missed making the playoffs for the third straight season in 2018 following a 3-5 campaign under firstyear head coach John McGuire. But whether the Cougars can return to the postseason remains to be seen after losing 25 seniors to graduation. Three of the team’s five losses last season came by an average of six points and a bounce here or there could have put Kennedy on the right side of the postseason ledger. The offense, which averaged almost 25 points a game last year will see lots of new faces, especially at the skill positions. Junior Justin Rosenfeld takes over for the departed Matt Jones at quarterback with senior Liam Orr and junior Zaid Kaileh behind him in the backfield. The Cougars will also have a brand new receiving corps after all five players at the position from last year graduated. Rosenfeld’s only action last season came in a mop-up role against Garden City in the third game, but McGuire said his familiarity with the system, intelligence, and apprenticeship under Jones will make the transition at the game’s most important position seamless. “Justin’s a cerebral kid,” McGuire said. “He has a great grasp of the offense. Justin is also a good baseball player, so he’s built a little more compact, but does have a nice live arm. We’re going to ask a lot of him as a first-year starter.” McGuire is also anxious to see the balance between his two running backs of the “rising” and quick Kalieh with the more powerful Orr, a “swiss army knife” player who also saw time at linebacker, offensive tackle and defensive end. “He’s just a good athlete,” 24 — September 12, 2019

Lawrence Golden Tornadoes have something to prove By TONY BELLISSIMO
I
t’s a new era in Lawrence, where Jason Supple takes over the head coaching duties of a team not ranked anywhere in the top three of its conference for the first time anyone can remember. Supple has coached in the program since 2005 and spent the majority of those serving as defensive coordinator under Joe Martillotti, who guided the Golden Tornadoes to five Nassau County championships and three Long Island titles. In Martillotti’s final year, they won seven straight before falling to Plainedge in the regular-season finale and to Lynbrook in the opening round of the Conference III playoffs. “We don’t have a lot of returnees, but the kids are working hard and I think we can compete with the top teams,” Supple said. “As far as experience, everyone ranked above us definitely has more. That’s probably why we’re seeded the lowest we’ve ever been.” Supple’s head coaching debut on the sideline takes place under the Friday night lights at secondseeded South Side, followed by a trip to neighboring rival Hewlett in Week 2. The home slate gets underway in Week 3 when Lynbrook visits in a rematch of last year’s playoff showdown. “Our numbers are down as we’re starting to see the effects of losing the youth program years ago,” Supple said. “We just have to stay focused day to day and play with a chip on our shoulders.” As far as varsity starters, Lawrence brings back only a pair. Senior David Manara will be a key two-way lineman entering his third varsity campaign and first as a captain, and junior receiver Aquan Walker is its most accomplished 26 — September 12, 2019

He’s a pocket type but also athletic.” Walker, sophomore Kanye Robinson and senior Pat Cave will serve as targets when Abecassis’ arm goes to work. Walker will get some carries out of the backfield as well. “We need Aquan to produce,” Supple said. “He’s our most skilled kid and we’ll DaviD Manara look to move him around and get him the ball as much as possible.” Robinson, up from and Cave will start at cornerJV, is a tall receiver with reliable hands, and Cave will operate from back. Long Beach Marines seek playoffs in Conference II return By TONY BELLISSIMO

ack tangling with the likes of Garden City, Carey and Elmont in Conference II, the Marines have plenty of question marks to address after a 2-6 finish in Conference I a year ago. “We had a couple of disappointing losses that kept us out of the playoffs for the second year in a row,” Long Beach head coach Scott Martin said. “We’re jumping back down to Conference II and we’re looking to get back to the playoffs.” Seeded ninth in the 14-team conference, the Marines dive right into the fire against three-time defending county champion Garden City in Week 1. The home opener is the following Saturday against No. 13 Sewanhaka. “The schedule is what we’re used to and it has some ebbs and flows,” Martin said. “They way the seeds go, we have to find a way to jump at least one spot.” Long Beach’s roster is a mix of varsity returnees, though only a handful of kids bring starting experience, and newcomers. Three spots look secure on the offensive line, with senior Dylan Rutherig returning at center, senior John Schaeffer at left guard, and senior Jananda Hamilton-Ordona at left tackle. Four others — seniors Thomas Corso, Jakub Parker and Dominic DiCristi and junior Marco Silvestri — are competing for the right side vacancies. Rutherig knows the system well and needs to be consistent on shotgun snaps. Schaeffer, who played a significant role last season, has a high motor and an aggressive style, and Hamilton possesses powerful legs. “They’re tough athletes,” Martin said. acArthur finished near the top of Conference II last year with nearly an entirely new team. Now with much more experience back, the Generals are looking to take the next step as a program following a 6-4 2018 season that ended with a 13-7 semifinal loss to Carey at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. MacArthur, which finished in fourth place despite beginning last year with only three returning starters, brought back more than half of its offensive lineup when it opened camp Aug. 19. “We took some pretty big steps last year,” said longtime head coach Bobby Fehrenbach, a former standout football player for the Generals in the 1990s who has led them to two county titles. “With a lot of kids back expectations are higher.” The Generals return six offensive starters including senior tailback Hugh Kelleher, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards last season. Kelleher rushed for 180 yards on 28 carries in MacArthur’s 7-0 first round playoff win against Elmont. He is also a capable receiving threat out of the backfield and sometimes gets direct snaps out of the wildcat formation. “He is big, fast and strong,” said Fehrenbach of Kelleher. “He carried the load for us the entire year.” An experienced offensive line should provide plenty of holes for Kelleher. Senior Sean Tierney and junior Andrew Calderon return as starting tackles. Junior Greg Milau will be starting center for the second straight season. Oceanside Sailors capable of another deep playoff By ANDREW McCLURE
O
ceanside followed up its magical 2017 championship season with another terrific fall on the gridiron. The Sailors made plenty of noise, going 6-2 in league play, winning a pair of playoff games, and advancing to their third Nassau Conference I title game in four years where they were humbled by Freeport. Graduation was tough on the Oceanside, but the Sailors return enough talent to warrant being selected as the league’s second seed. With 10 sophomores and two freshmen on the roster, a young team will battle with the likes of Baldwin, Massapequa, Farmingdale, and Uniondale to be among those jockeying for a high playoff seed. Freeport is clearly the team to beat in Conference I. Rob Blount, in his 11th season as Oceanside’s head coach, knows he’ll have to be patient. “This is as young as we’ve been in a long time,” Blount said. “We lost a lot of talent, but we have four returning starters on the offensive line. We had to go a little slower than we normally do in camp. It’s going to take time to jell. We have a tough schedule, so we’re going to find out who we are pretty early on.” Sophomore quarterback Charlie McKee announced his presence with authority as a freshman. McKee threw for nearly 2,500 yards while completing 63 percent of his passes. He exceeded all expectations by throwing 27 touchdown passes. He was picked off just six times. “Last year, we had a good feeling about his ability, but he shocked us with his composure,” Blount said. “He’s never too high or too low. alley Stream South will have a homecoming of a different sort. After spending last season in Conference III, which resulted in a 3-5 mark, the sixth-seeded Falcons are moving back to Conference IV and will face more familiar foes in hopes of earning their first winning season in recent years. Even though they showed plenty of fight in 2018 (two of the losses were by a combined nine points), head coach Joe Guastafeste is happy to be “where we belong.” The Falcons went 4-4 during their last foray in the conference. “I’m happy to be in four,” he said. “There’s a lot of tough teams in four. I’m a little bit more familiar [with them] because most of the coaches are still there. We’ve just got to keep it going.” Keeping it going may depend how an inexperienced quarterback and offensive line jell as the season progresses. Guastafeste has 22 players on his roster and about 15 starting spots to fill, but he is excited about his team’s potential. “The quantity isn’t tremendous, but the quality is pretty good,” he said. “We have a very athletic group this year. Pretty much all of them could play. That’s what I’m excited about this year.” The lone 10th-grader South called up will be given the keys to the Wing-T offense in quarterback Cle-Andre Stewart. antagh reached the county finals for the fourth straight year in 2018 despite beginning the season just two returning starters. Now with a more veteran presence, Wantagh is aiming to bring home the program’s first county title since 2016. The Warriors enter the season as the third seed in Conference III following a 7-4 campaign that ended with a 35-7 loss to Plainedge in the title game at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. “We have much more experience and we have much higher expectations,” said 28th-year head coach Keith Sachs, who has won 173 games at Wantagh including three county crowns. “It’s a nice feeling going into a season with a lot of the same guys as last year.” Sachs will bring back a number of offensive weapons including senior running back Michael Lombardi, whose 2018 season ended prematurely with a knee injury during a season-opening 19-6 loss to Lawrence. Prior to the injury, Lombardi rushed for 140 yards on just 13 carries. “He’s on a mission,” said Sachs of Lombari, who is also expected to be an integral part of the Warrior defense at linebacker. “He looks good out there.” Lombardi will part of an experienced backfield featuring seniors Tom von Bargen and Nick Teresky.
