East M MEadow adow Youthful Jets plan a balanced attack By GARRETT D. URIBE

R

ebuilding around a single returning starter, secondyear head coach Doug Bange’s Jets begin the next chapter of East Meadow football primed for improvisation, as the young squad sets about adjusting its identity. A roster atypically light on linemen and bulging at the skill positions has inspired East Meadow – 4-5 overall last fall in Nassau Conference I, with a firstround playoff loss to Freeport – to break with its run-first offensive tradition and look to air it out a little as the sixth seed. “We’re trying new looks and formations this year just based on what we’ve been dealt,” said Bange, who also stated his club may start as many as six sophomores. “The run game’s been our bread and butter. But with such a surplus of skill guys, we have to get them involved. We wouldn’t try to be something we’re not.” Just who will be at the controls of East Meadow’s upgraded air attack remains unsettled, with a battle at quarterback under way between sophomore James Saragossi and junior Jahiem Perry, each of whom would be a first-year starter. “They’re getting equal reps in practice and we’re watching for one to pull ahead,” Bange said of the QB candidates. “James runs the option well. Jahiem throws a good ball. They’re both good in the pocket. We probably won’t make a decision until we’re right at week one.” A stabilizing factor amid the Jets’ retooling is returning starter Stephen Calderaro, a senior running back who was second on the team a year ago with five touchdowns, and third in rushing

MacArthur M Rebuilt Generals still eyeing playoff spot By ANDREW COEN

D

espite facing an injuryplagued 2017 season, MacArthur still nearly reached the county semifinals at Hofstra. The Generals will now look to march toward a postseason run with an almost entire new starting lineup. While MacArthur only returns three starters, injuries thrust many of the younger players into battle during a 5-4 season that ended with a 26-19 loss to Calhoun in the first round of the Conference II playoffs. “We had a lot of injuries last year, but the silver lining was some returners this year got some extra experience,” said longtime head coach Bobby Fehrenbach. “I still expect a lot of growing pains.” Junior receiver Hugh Kelleher returns after earning a varsity starting spot as just a sophomore. Kelleher also shined as a defensive back and registered 12 tackles in a 28-21 win against Valley Stream Central. Junior Sean Tierney earned varsity experience at guard and will be counted on to anchor the Generals offensive line this fall. Tierney will also be at heart of the MacArthur defense at a tackle spot. “On a team filled with a lot of seniors they stepped up right away from day one,” Fehrenbach said of Kelleher and Tierney. “They can play.” Senior Mike Langelotti received time at linebacker last year and is slated to also contribute on offense this season at running back. Fellow senior Kevin O’Shea received playing time at guard as a junior and should be a key part of the offensive line unit. Fehrenbach is hoping for a big season out of junior linebacker Dan Calderon, who broke his foot in the first game last year and missed

Malverne Mules look to extend playoff streak, reach semis By TONY BELLISSIMO

alverne’s playoff streak in Nassau Conference IV stands at three consecutive years, but the Mules are itching to get beyond the first round and reaching the semifinals on the turf at Hofstra. As the No. 5 preseason seed and with depth at all the skill positions, head coach Kito Lockwood is optimistic this will be the year Malverne takes another step forward. “We’ve got experience, good speed and depth in some key areas,” Lockwood said. “I think the seeds are pretty accurate. We definitely have a tough schedule, playing all four teams seeded ahead of us.” The Mules, 3-6 overall last season, open at home against Mineola. “The system they use us very effective, so we have to be ready,” Lockwood noted. Additional home games are against Jericho, Carle Place and two-time defending county champion Seaford. First comes New Hyde Park in a scrimmage that could determine Malverne’s starting quarterback. Juniors Salek Butler and Jalen Brown, along with senior newcomer Messiah Gordon are all in the mix. Butler, a full-time defensive back a year ago, saw action in a few games under center. “He’s a dual threat and can be a game-changer,” Lockwood said. Brown was the JV starter and brings a strong set of mechanics, while Gordon played quarterback at Baldwin and faced the Mules during 7-on-7 summer drills. Only two starters return to the offensive front, though Lockwood said he was encouraged by the group’s performance during the offseason and early in camp. Sewanhaka Indians counting on offensive linemen By ANDREW MCCLURE

laying in what is typically the deepest conference in Nassau County always presents a challenge on the football field for Sewanhaka. With the likes of perennial-power Garden City, Carey. MacArthur, Calhoun, Elmont, and Mepham all competing in Conference II, there is never an easy Saturday afternoon. After finishing with a 3-5 record in 2017, the Indians are once again the No. 11 seed in what will be a very tough league. Sewanhaka’s ability to control the line of scrimmage, and to limit its unforced errors will be imperative if the Indians expect to earn one of the conference’s eight playoff berths. Head coach George Kasimatis, in his 10th season at Sewanhaka, is perpetually optimistic. “This is a group of guys who are just great to be around,” Kasimatis said. “We have terrific senior leadership, and we’re excited about the guys coming up from a successful junior varsity team. Everyone is doing what is being asked of them. We should have a pretty good offensive line, which is always a plus. It should allow us to have more sustained drives.” Brandon Valerio, a three-year varsity starter, anchors the offensive line. Valerio is a highly intelligent, hard-working senior guard. He’ll be flanked by junior Jeremiah Mirville, a player Kasimatis has high hopes for. Senior Patrick Ihejirika returns at center for the Indians. Recognizing that playing his linemen on both sides of the ball often leads to a fatigued bunch, Kasimatis will look to establish a rotation system. mere eight points separated Valley Stream Central from a .500 season. Two heartbreak losses – to MacArthur 28-21, and Bellmore-JFK 27-26 – punctuated Central’s 2-6 showing last autumn in Nassau Conference II, the latter loss occurring in the Eagles’ season finale, when Bellmore’s field goal with six seconds left kept Central from reaching the playoffs. The Eagles, meanwhile, scored a redundancy of points in their wins – beating Great Neck 40-7 and high-rated Manhasset 30-6. As all-county quarterback Armani O’Brady returns for his senior season – largely with an all-new supporting cast – VSC joins the Conference II fray seeded eighth, seeking to redress last year’s near-misses and expand upon the promise it displayed. “Armani O’Brady has elevated this team, working hard and setting an example,” third-year head coach Mike Rubino said of the Eagles team captain, who was team leader with eight rushing touchdowns, five touchdown passes, and a 70-yard pick-six at nickelback. “He’s unquestionably our leader. As Armani goes, so goes the team.” Continued Rubino: “We’re young but talented. We had the growing pains last year of a team trying to get to the next level, and we didn’t do some of the small things we needed to. This year it’s about getting past that and executing.” Juniors Nate Grimsley and Lionel Philips join O’Brady in the offensive backfield.
