A word of thanks to our volunteer firefighters There is a part of many of us, I believe, that wants, on one level or another, to be a volunteer firefighter.

Most people are good people. Most people want to protect their communities. Most people understand that one of the greatest threats to any community is fire. If a blaze were allowed to rage unconcott trolled, it could consume whole blocks or neighborhoods, as was the case in the 19th century, before the advent of highly organized fire companies.

Most of us want to help. We, however, haven’t the ability to fight fires. Volunteer firefighting requires an inordinate amount of time and a level of commitment that is so rare these days.

To say that our volunteer firefighters are heroes is an understatement. They give selflessly to a higher cause — protecting their neighbors’ homes, businesses and lives. You can only imagine your community without your department, or with a paid fire department, the taxes would be astronomical.

So we can only say thank you to the good men and women who fight our fires and come to the aid of people in all manner of catastrophes, from heroin overdoses to car

wrecks and hurricanes.

Several months in the making, the First on the Scene section is a project that is intended to express our sincere gratitude to Nassau County’s volunteer fire departments. Too often, our fire volunteers go unnoticed within our communities. With this section, we hope to change that. rinton It is, perhaps, little surprise that the ranks of volunteer firefighters have diminished over the past two decades. Many folks are working two and three jobs to make ends meet.

They haven’t the time to volunteer.

Nearly 20 years ago, I photographed a front-page investigative story for the Long Island section of The New York Times that looked at the dire need for more fire volunteers. I visited with firefighters from across the Island. The story was always one and the same: Firefighting ranks were becoming stretched thinner and thinner.

In speaking with a number of fire chiefs and firefighters for this Herald section, the story remains the same now: Our local fire departments desperately need recruits.

Often, people wonder why anyone would take on a responsibility as monumental as volunteer firefighting. I asked that question

He said the answer was simple: old-fashioned good will. “You see how devastating it is when someone’s house in on fire,” he told me. “It’s a special feeling to know you helped that person.”

Indeed.

Beyond that, it’s important to note that fire companies offer a home to so many.

They are places of camaraderie, of brother and sisterhood, of community. For those

who are firefighters, they often say they could not imagine not volunteering.

A nearly two-century tradition of firefighting

The Glen Cove Fire Department was born 80 years before the City of Glen Cove was incorporated in 1917, and its evolution from a single company of horse-drawn “engines” to the fully developed emergency response unit it is today provides a window into Glen Cove’s storied past.

At the urging of the Glen Cove Mutual Insurance Company, 30 volunteers gathered to form the Glen Cove Fire Company in 1837. The group raised enough money to buy an engine, a hand-pumped rig that the company affectionately called “Iron Sides.” In 1854, the company erected its first firehouse, where Pulaski Street is now.

As is the case with today’s Fire Department, the volunteer members back then took their mission, and the professional execution of it, seriously. So much so, in fact, that in the fire company’s original bylaws, members could be fined for delaying a fire call, swearing and bringing up politics or religion at a company meeting.

Back then, before the advent of more modern forms of communication, the fire company had to come up with a creative way to notify members that there was a fire that they needed to fight. The minutes of an 1885 meeting show that the company met with trustees from the Episcopal Church “to see . . . about the ringing of the [church] bell in case of fire.”

In the early 1900s, Glen Cove became more developed and populated, and took on greater fire risks as it transitioned from a rural hamlet to an industrial hub. In 1902, the Glen Cove Fire Department — distinct from the Glen Cove Fire Company, which had been renamed the Pacific Company — was formed. Its two companies, Chemical Company and the Hook and Ladder, took up residence in a building on School Street near Glen Street, and acquired its first motorized engine.

Pacific Company joined the department a year later.

Back then, the department pumped water from Glen Cove Creek; the

hydrant system had not yet been built.

That allowed one of the worst fires in Long Island’s history to break out and spread. A blaze in 1906 at the Duryea Starch Works factory, which had closed in 1900, burned for a week. The volunteers ran out of water before they could bring the fire under control.

Eventually the factory exploded.

In 1914, other local fire responders started the Mutual Protective Association of South Glen Cove. Engine and Hose Company formed as part of that association, but in 1917, it joined the Glen Cove Fire Department.

1917 was an important year for Glen Cove. The village became a city, which took over the administrative responsibilities for the Fire Department’s equipment, which had begun to shift away from horse-drawn vehicles and move more to motorized ones.

That same year, 25 fire alarms were installed around the city, enabling the department to respond to fires faster. The 1917 alarms remained until 1982, when the system was updated to allow whomever pulled the alarm to provide details about the fire to the dispatcher.

The city began to grow more quickly, and so did the department. By 1924, it had to move out of its old firehouse and build a new one on West Glen Street.

In 1929, the Ladies Auxiliary was formed. Women responded to fires alongside the men, and assisted them in any ways they could.

When World War II started, the department’s membership thinned as many volunteers were called to the battlefield. To maintain firefighting capacity, the department had to amend a bylaw to allow people over the age of 41 to be members. Plaques commemorating members who died in both world wars bear the inscription, “They rolled to the call of country as they rolled to the call of fire.”

department’s resources more skillfully; it allowed volunteers at the scene of a fire to feed information back to the firehouse to let chiefs know whether to send another vehicle, and also enabled a chief to manage several active fires at once.

On Feb. 1, 1962, a ladder carrying then-Department Secretary Edward Campbell collapsed. His safety harness was severed, causing him to fall 40 feet, fracturing his skull and left scapula and causing internal injuries. A massive investigation, including by top officials from the New York City Fire Department, was launched. They discovered that the $63,000 ladder, less than a year old, had a faulty mecha-

nism that caused the accident.

Campbell eventually recovered, and was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor from Nassau County.

Other department members earned accolades as well. In 1976, Ex-Chief George Gengarelly attained the highest position possible for a volunteer firefighter when he became President of the Fireman’s Association of New York, which oversees volunteer fire operations statewide.

In 2012, the department celebrated its 175th anniversary, for which a book detailing the department’s rich history was compiled by members, with the help of the Glen Cove Library. n

By Zoe Malin At its core, the Sea Cliff Fire Department embodies the fundamental principles of the village that it serves: community, tradition and altruism. “Sea Cliff is unique,” said Chief Mark Vitale. “People are close-knit and very inclusive. The Fire Department thrives off this, and we aim to include the community in all aspects of what we do.”

In addition to “the firefighting part of it,” as Vitale phrased it, the Sea Cliff department is tied deeply to the Sea Cliff community’s rich history. The fire department was established in 1884 by some of the village’s first families, who shared a common interest in organizing a local government and establishing public services. After being elected as Sea Cliff’s first mayor, Fredrick Geissenhainer recognized the importance of a proper firefighting force and took it upon himself to begin one. He personally purchased a hand-pumping engine and called upon residents to volunteer.

Geissenhainer wasted no time in his pursuits, a trait that is shared by the fire department’s volunteers today.

“Our top priority has always been protecting Sea Cliff from fires and natural disasters,” Vitale said, “and we aim to do so efficiently.”

That is a challenging calling, given the varied terrain and physical features that volunteers must contend with.

“Sea Cliff is surrounded by water from both Tappan and Sea Cliff Beach,” Vitale said, “so the fire department’s role during storms and hurricanes is crucial to keeping residents out of danger.” The fire department was heavily called on during Hurricane Sandy, when water crept up to people’s front porches, and volunteers did not rest until they were sure all residents’ needs were met. “It was a busy time for us,” Vitale said, “but we were ready for it.”

Normally, though, the fire department is dealing with floods, kitchen fires and fallen power lines, along with medical emergencies.

has been on call to transport people to the hospital if need be. “People in Sea Cliff have medical needs, and when they need immediate attention, we send aid to transport them to the hospital,” Vitale said.

Today, volunteers uphold many traditions that date back to the 1800s. The fire department was a focal point for community activity and social events from the moment it was established, and remains as such today. “In early October, we hold our Open House, which is a tradition we have kept up throughout the years,” Vitale said. “We invite the community into the firehouse, and the kids really love it.”

Sea Cliff firefighters said they especially enjoy working with young people. “We welcome high school interns,” Vitale said.

“It’s so rewarding being in the fire service, and to know that I am making a difference in people’s lives every day,”

said Jack O’Donnel, a Sea Cliff volunteer. “Everyone in the fire department has become like family to me, and I could not be more grateful to have them in my life.”

Walking through the Village of Sea Cliff, it’s hard to imagine not seeing the beautiful brick structure that is the Sea Cliff Firehouse. It was built in 1932, after a series of smaller firehouses were outgrown. “I think our firehouse

today reflects our involvement in the community,” Vitale said, “because it is a focal point in the main strip of Sea Cliff and admired by all.”

Vitale said the residents of Sea Cliff inspire department members. “Thank you for supporting us since 1884,” he said, “and I speak for firefighters, young and old, past, present and future, when I say that.” n

For more than 100 years, the Glenwood Landing Fire Company has served Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Brookville and Roslyn Harbor, protecting the lives and properties of the people in these communities. It boasts a legacy as one of the best equipped and best trained units in the county, ready to respond to any of the 1,000 calls it fields each month.

On April 18, 1907, 18 men met in the chapel of the Glenwood Landing Church to form the department. Ernest Hittorff was elected as the company’s first foreman. Five trustees were designated to raise money for gear, which the company used to purchase caps, badges and a proper engine.

The charter for Glenwood Hook & Ladder, Engine & Hose Co. Inc. was officially recorded in August, just a few months later.

The old schoolhouse on Grove Street became the company’s first home. It was equipped with a horsedrawn hook and ladder and two hose carts, drawn by volunteer firemen. The original firehouse used a bell as its initial fire signal, but was later replaced with a steam whistle at the Nassau Light & Power Company.

In 1916, volunteers petitioned for a fire district and changed company bylaws. A company band was commissioned that same year. By 1928, volunteers voted to erect a new firehouse on the same site. Resident Benjamin Stern, of Stern Brothers, brought Manhattan architectural firm Cherry & Matz to the project. The architects specialized in ecclesiastical, church-like designs, which remain evident on the façade of the firehouse today. In 1932, the company organized an emergency crew, which today continues to respond to emergency calls 24/7.

The company was also instrumental in keeping spirits high on the home front during both world wars. During World War I, the company formed a Home Defense League to help maintain morale, and in World War II, volunteers devoted hours of service as part of the Civil Defense of Long Island, and kept watch over the community during this volatile time.

State-mandated qualifications for fire companies have turned the volunteer service into more of a business, according to Chief Michael Riccardo, but Glenwood retains its familial charm in spite of this.

“We call it the firehouse family,” said Chief Jeff Papasidero, who has served with the company for more than 35 years. “My father was a fireman. I followed in his footsteps, and in two years my daughter will be following in my footsteps.”

The chief added that many of the current volunteers are second and third generation firefighters; some even have a history that extends over 70 years. “They’ve seen it from day one to where it is now,” Papasidero said.

Much has changed since day one.

Advancements in technology, such as thermal imaging and insulated gear, have allowed the company to fight fires with better results. “The equipment has so advanced that we’re going farther and farther into fires, and you don’t feel the heat because the gear has advanced rapidly,” Riccardo said. “Certain departments can’t afford to get this type of equipment.”

Papasidero noted the greater presence of women volunteers, not just in Glenwood, but also in companies across the county. The company’s current president, Deana Roper, is the first woman to hold that title.

What hasn’t changed is the bond among company members. “It’s a gigantic brotherhood that you can’t get at any other type of organization,” Riccardo said. “You can be on a call with a guy who you just hang out with, and all of a sudden your lives are together in this burning building, and you have to trust each other.”

Although volunteer retention is tough — which Riccardo says is “a sign of the times” — the chiefs keep coming back. “It’s something in your blood,” he said. “Every call is different.

Sometimes you see people at their worst, and I may not know them from a hole in the wall, but I’m here to help, no matter what. We’re not here for praise and parades.” n

By Scott Brinton Volunteer firefighters climb ladders that stretch two and three stories into the air, high-pressure hoses at the ready to spray down raging fires that burn hotter than a thousand degrees. Black smoke billows in all directions. At any moment, the home or building might explode or collapse.

Meanwhile, other volunteers rush inside in search of victims who might be trapped. It’s an inferno, with flames raging in all directions. Sight is limited.

The structure groans. Weakened wooden floors might give in. Walls and ceilings might come crashing down.

Yes, volunteer firefighting is very, very dangerous, and the financial reward is, well, nonexistent, except for a small pension later in life. Long Island’s firefighters are largely volunteers. They give of their time and of themselves, they say, out of an old-fashioned sense of community and a desire to aid those in need.

Glen Cove Hospital, now a part of Northwell Health, pulled out all the stops on April 13 to honor local first responders and hospital personnel who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to become heroes.

First responders and Glen Cove Hospital caregivers came together April 13 for a special celebration of their lifesaving work at Glen Cove Heroes Night.

Roughly 40 individuals were honored as heroes, a title given to “those identified by patients as being exceptional,” said the hospital’s deputy executive director, Jim Megna.

First responders and caregivers were reunited with patients whom they had helped over the past year, which was a touching moment for all. “Glen Cove Heroes Night is a commemoration of the teamwork amongst first responders and those at the hospital,” said Susan Kwiatek, Glen Cove Hospital’s executive director. “It’s clear the wonderful things they do for patients due to their joint efforts.”

Planning for Glen Cove Heroes Night was in the works for many months, ever since Megna was inspired by other Northwell hospitals that have hosted similar events. “I adapted it to fit our community’s hospital, but the overall concept remained the same: celebrating the heroes who keep our community safe,” Megna noted.

Honorees were easy to spot, each one donning a white rose –– and an ear-to-ear smile. After a cocktail hour at which first responders, caregivers and their patients had the chance to meet for the first time since the emergencies that brought them together, Kwiatek welcomed everyone, followed by three patients who shared their stories and presented their heroes. Those honored were humble, and each reacted the same way: “I was just doing my job.”

Of the patient stories shared, Rae Natale discussed falling in her home and the “incredible Northwell

experience” that she had. As soon as emergency medical technicians Julia Giannoutsos and Tim Maloney arrived to transport her to Glen Cove Hospital, “everyone came together to help me,” Natale recalled.

Giannoutsos and Maloney were both recognized as heroes, but said they did not see themselves as such. “I look at it as an entire community coming together to help people,” Giannoutsos said. Maloney spoke of how happy he was to support Natale on this special evening, and said “I’m so proud of her successful recovery.”

Glen Cove Heroes Night will be an annual event from this year forward. Megna said he believes it’s a “great excitement builder for Glen Cove and its hospital.” Kwiatek agreed, saying that the event highlighted “the special place in patients’ hearts reserved for those who assisted them in their time of need.” n Honorees mixed and mingled with patients and local leaders during a cocktail hour at the event.

This tasty-looking cake was on the menu at the event.

Glen Cove Hospital Director Susan Kwiatek, Police Chief William Whitton, Deputy Police Chief Chris Ortiz and former Fire Chief Bill Basdavanos were among the attendees at the ceremony.

Glen Cove Hospital, serving the community Glen Cove Hospital has served the North Shore for more than 90 years. It is now part of Northwell Health, and according to its website, “is committed to building on that legacy by evolving to a new model of care that will ensure that the health care needs of local residents are met both today and in years to come.”

The hospital maintains in-patient beds for medical and surgical patients, as well as an emergency department and intensivecare unit, but it’s now “placing a greater emphasis on outpatient, community-based and home-based services,” its website states.

Housing North Shore fire companies

By Scott Brinton Once upon a time, in the early 20th century, firehouses were simple, woodframe structures, with a handful of garage bays to store horse- or human-powered engines with giant wheels and oversized tanks that, frankly, would run out of water fairly quickly in a big blaze.

As the 20th century progressed, so did the fire trucks, becoming motorized.

As time went on, small trucks became

massive engines that required ever-larger garage bays.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Today’s firehouses are very large structures — often the largest in their communities.

They’ve also gone high-tech, and rarely is there a single firehouse for an entire community. Often there are two or three.

1- The Glen Cove Firehouse is a massive, red-brick structure, with multiple bays.

2- The Sea Cliff Firehouse, also a red-brick structure, looks a little like it belongs in the English countryside.

3- The Glenwood Landing Fire Department is cottage-like in appearance.

4- The Glenwood Landing Firehouse has served the community since 1907.

No doubt, firefighting equipment has changed enormously over the decades. In the 19th and early 20th century, it was horse- or human-drawn, and hand-cranked. Now it’s motorized

and high-powered. So it’s always a bit of a kick to look back on the equipment of a bygone era — and wonder how firefighters performed their duties back in the day. –Scott Brinton
