A word of thanks to our volunteer firefighters There is a part of many of us, I believe, that wants, on one level or another, to be a volunteer firefighter.

Most people are good people. Most people want to protect their communities. Most people understand that one of the greatest threats to any community is fire. If a blaze were allowed to rage unconcott trolled, it could consume whole blocks or neighborhoods, as was the case in the 19th century, before the advent of highly organized fire companies.

Most of us want to help. We, however, haven’t the ability to fight fires. Volunteer firefighting requires an inordinate amount of time and a level of commitment that is so rare these days.

To say that our volunteer firefighters are heroes is an understatement. They give selflessly to a higher cause — protecting their neighbors’ homes, businesses and lives. You can only imagine your community without your department, or with a paid fire department, the taxes would be astronomical.

So we can only say thank you to the good men and women who fight our fires and come to the aid of people in all manner of catastrophes, from heroin overdoses to car

wrecks and hurricanes.

Several months in the making, the First on the Scene section is a project that is intended to express our sincere gratitude to Nassau County’s volunteer fire departments. Too often, our fire volunteers go unnoticed within our communities. With this section, we hope to change that. rinton It is, perhaps, little surprise that the ranks of volunteer firefighters have diminished over the past two decades. Many folks are working two and three jobs to make ends meet.

They haven’t the time to volunteer.

Nearly 20 years ago, I photographed a front-page investigative story for the Long Island section of The New York Times that looked at the dire need for more fire volunteers. I visited with firefighters from across the Island. The story was always one and the same: Firefighting ranks were becoming stretched thinner and thinner.

In speaking with a number of fire chiefs and firefighters for this Herald section, the story remains the same now: Our local fire departments desperately need recruits.

Often, people wonder why anyone would take on a responsibility as monumental as volunteer firefighting. I asked that question

of Louis Lanzilotta in 1997 for a Herald story about the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. At the time, he was chief of the department, one of the oldest fire companies on the South Shore.

He said the answer was simple: old-fashioned good will. “You see how devastating it is when someone’s house in on fire,” he told me. “It’s a special feeling to know you helped that person.”

Indeed.

Beyond that, it’s important to note that fire companies offer a home to so many.

They are places of camaraderie, of brother and sisterhood, of community. For those

who are firefighters, they often say they could not imagine not volunteering.

Housing the Freeport Fire Department

By Scott Brinton Once upon a time, in the early 20th century, firehouses were simple, wood-frame structures, with a handful of garage bays to store horse- or human-powered engines with giant wheels and oversized tanks that, frankly, would run out of water fairly quickly in a big blaze.

As the 20th century progressed, so did the fire trucks, becoming motorized. As time went on, small trucks became massive engines that required ever-larger garage bays.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Today’s firehouses are very large structures — often the largest in their communi-

ties. They’ve also gone high-tech, and rarely is there a single firehouse for an entire community. Often there are two or three, but because Freeport is so large, it has six.

Town offers alarm safety tips Editor’s note: The following safety tips were provided by the Town of Hempstead as a public service announcement.

Smoke detectors are considered the most effective fire-warning device, and should be placed on every level of a home. When properly installed, smoke alarms reduce fire-related deaths and injuries. Because smoke rapidly spreads during a house fire, the alarms provide a warning, giving occupants more time to escape from the home.

Be sure to: Install smoke alarms in every sleeping • room and outside each separate sleeping area.

Volunteer firefighters climb ladders that stretch two and three stories into the air, high-pressure hoses at the ready to spray down raging fires that burn hotter than a thousand degrees.

Black smoke billows in all directions.

At any moment, the home or building might explode or collapse.

Meanwhile, other volunteers rush inside in search of victims who might be trapped. It’s an inferno, with flames raging in all directions. Sight is limited.

The structure groans. Weakened wooden floors might give in. Walls and ceilings might come crashing down.

Yes, volunteer firefighting is very, very dangerous, and the financial reward is, well, non-existent, except for a small pension alter in life. Long Island’s firefighters are largely volunteers. They give of their time and of themselves, they say, out of an old-fashioned sense of community and a desire to aid those in need.

The Freeport F.D., diligent in training, committed to people

By Julie Loney The history of the highly decorated Freeport Fire Department can be traced back to 1874, almost 20 years before Freeport was organized as an incorporated village. In the beginning, however, the department was a ragtag collection of volunteers, with relatively few resources to fight fires. A schoolhouse blaze in 1893 led local folks to commit greater resources to the department, when volunteers and local residents were forced to fight the fire, which broke out on the roof, with snowballs.

On a blustery January night, a schoolhouse caught fire at Grove and Pine Streets. After members of the village’s only fire company at the time, Excelsior Hook and Ladder, ran to the scene with their buckets and supplies, it soon became clear that the community’s water supply was inadequate. After minutes of thinking, Freeporters stepped in and began chucking clumps of snow at the school roof in an attempt to fight the fire. The Excelsior Hook and Ladder team joined the community effort, and the fire was put out within 15 minutes, according to the department website.

The water scarcity compelled firefighters to meet with village board members, and a proposal for a municipal water supply was drafted. After it was approved, serious talk of creating a more secure fire department was discussed, and a new fire company was created in mid-1893. Wide Awake Engine Company, together with Excelsior Hook, collaborated under one department, and they were officially recognized on Nov. 3, 1893, as the first two engine companies to represent the Freeport community.

One hundred and twenty-four years later, Freeport has grown into the second largest village in New York state, and the volunteer fire department is among Long Island’s biggest fire companies, currently with 346 members.

Long before today’s massive red trucks that pile out of 15 Broadway, firefighters in Freeport’s early days

were expected to carry all of their gear to a fire scene, including hose reels, and ladder wagon and steamer engines, with a horse occasionally on standby. On Jan. 28, 1914, the Fire Council approved the first automobile for Vigilant Hose Company Four, and thus the motorization of the Freeport Fire Department began. From there, volunteers trained vigorously with their new vehicles to respond to calls quickly and effectively.

The department’s training tradition stands out to Ray Maguire, the Freeport Fire Department’s current executive director. “There is a tremendous commitment in order to join the fire department because it’s not like a fraternal organization where you come to a meeting and become the chairman of a committee,” Maguire said. “This is life or death.”

After years as an explorer in the junior fire company, Maguire started his career in the department in 1977, and 10 years later became third assistant chief in 1987. Three years after that, he was named the department chief, and then the executive director in 1997. He has held the position for 20 years. In his more than four decades with the department, he said, Freeport firefighters have stuck to their training roots.

“Our trainings have expanded significantly, but [that] can also create an extra challenge for the volunteers, because these people are working fulltime jobs, they’ve got family obligations, but then they still have to come here and train,” he said. Maguire noted that volunteers become really good at time management.

Training paid off for Freeport Lt. Gatha Ballard on his way to a drill this past March, when he jumped into action while off duty. On his way to work, Ballard noticed smoke billowing from a home. He responded immediately, leading four people to safety. He then notified his crew, and within minutes the fire was extinguished.

“We’re trained to save people’s lives, put the fire out and save people’s homes. That dedication to training is what brought me here today,” Ballard

said after being recognized for his actions during a Town Hall meeting on May 22.

Currently, eight companies make up the fire department, including two specialized divisions. In 1940, a fire police squad was organized to direct traffic or provide directions to emergency personnel at a scene. In 1985, an underwater search-and-rescue team was created.

“The incredible dedication and commitment from these firefighters, when you see them coming out of a scene battleworn, their eyes are red, they’re carrying 100 pounds on their backs, and they’re doing it for free,” Maguire said, “it speaks volumes.” n
