It was her dream to have her own business; when the opportunity presented itself she immediately jumped in. A
little piece of France exists right here in Rockville Centre. Chat Noir, which began as a tea room in 2009, offers a sublime French experience — all day long.
“Our customers were simply amazing. We got by on takeout. There would be customers waiting in a line all the way down the block for our takeout, in any kind of weather; rain, snow, you name it.”
“Chat Noir offers a unique teahouse experience by day, and an elegant culinary affair by night,” says owner Melissa Kelly. “The casual yet upscale atmosphere makes for an ideal setting for dining with friends, family, clients, and business associates. With homemade croissants and brioche, and Michelineducated European dishes, our community has embraced us since day one and we pledge to provide a memorable experience.”
Melissa explains that this was part of the reason she took over; she was inspired by its success throughout the pandemic. “We never had to close our doors,” she says. “The clientele were simply amazing.” In the process Chat Noir has emerged as a real jewel of Nassau County. If you’re looking for an authentic French bistro experience with a friendly, family-oriented staff, Chat Noir is the place to visit. Whether your desire is a superb croissant, elegant tea service, a tasty dinner, or to celebrate a special occasion, Chat Noir provides solace from the ordinary.
What makes Chat Noir special, according to Melissa, is its sense of community. “It has a magic to it,” she says. “We’re a small staff. We’re like a little family. So, you know, we love our customers, and we love each other. It’s just a great little place.” The restaurant’s founder, Emma Tso, fell in love with Rockville Centre as an appealing neighborhood; also considered to be “restaurant central” in Nassau County. “She found the location [on Merrick Road] and fell in love with the building,” says Melissa. “It was an old building and it had just what she was looking for.” Rockville Centre may not be the only place for this charming spot; expansion may be on the horizon for the bustling restaurant. Melissa’s goal, as Chat Noir’s new owner, is both to maintain Tso’s dreams while looking ahead. “My mission is to give people a great experience,” she says. “To come in and feel like they’re part of the family, have good food and atmosphere, and leave happy. But my long-term plan is to hopefully open multiple locations.” Its success ironically is Chat Noir’s biggest challenge. While the restaurant industry as a whole, has struggled since the pandemic, Chat Noir has successfully persevered. Its biggest obstacle is having enough space for everybody.

“We have so many parties and unfortunately, not enough room for everybody,” says Melissa. “We hate turning people away, but thank God that business is that way. You’d rather be turning people away than begging them to come in.” “I think that we took a lot of things for granted before the pandemic,” she adds.“Sitting close to someone having a conversation, greeting someone with a hug, the little things like that. The pandemic slowed everything down, basically to a stop.” Nevertheless, Chat Noir prevailed throughout Covid, pivoting to a takeout-based business model as did most restaurateurs when the first wave of shutdowns hit Long Island.

fter a lengthy delay due to the pandemic, Rockville Centre can finally Go Nuts for Sweets —the apt name for the village’s enticing sweet spot, which opened in February. Owner and founder David Thomas is thrilled to finally realize his dream after the lengthy delay. In 2019, David and his wife Jenitza signed a lease for the location that would eventually become Go Nuts for Sweets, but the Covid shutdown soured their plans. Now, all is looking sweeter than ever. The candy/dessert shop offfers some 200 varieties of packaged and bulk candies in dispensers, with playful shapes and names such as “Funny Bones” and “Silly Assorted Bananas,” along with standards such as chocolate-covered pretzels and M&Ms and 18 types of fudge, including birthday cake and cookie dough. The menu also includes bubble teas, ice cream (12 flavors), cakes, pastries, nuts, and may chocolates items. Custom gifts for all occasions are also available upon request. As is popular these days, mix-ins are offered with the ice cream; customers can choose from an assortment of 20 cereals to create their own ice cream treat. The vibrant shop has two bars with hightop chairs, flatscreen TV

menus and wallpaper filled with words and phrases. Among the customer favorites so far are bubble teas with flavors such as tiramisu, coconut and lavender, as well as fruit teas, including kumquat, pomegranate, guava and other varieties. Additional menu items are being planned. Go Nuts for Sweets is a passion project for David and his wife. “We wanted to do something fun for the community and for the kids,” he says. “We like putting smiles on kids’ faces. And also, we wanted to start somewhere where our kids will come and learn the business and to have fun. We wanted to do something we would be proud of.” With David’s background in logistics and Jenitza’s retail and customer service expertise, the couple is well suited to the demands of operating their own business. “Our goal is to become a staple of the community,” he says. “We want to be able support the community however we can.” As Go Nuts for Sweets becomes firmly established here, other offerings are on the horizon, including children’s birthday parties and other special events.

Upon entering the doors, her career was starting a new chapter. With over 30 years of experience facilitating person-centered services with people with cognitive challenges, ranging from developmental disabilities to the mentally ill, this would be the first time in her career in an elder care environment. Her goals are fully in sync with Maple Pointe’s mission statement: For over 30 years, Chelsea Senior Living has remained dedicated to fulfilling our mission to provide a comfortable, safe, and secure home for those who need help with the activities of daily living, in a caring atmosphere of respect and dignity. When meeting with Executive Director Melissa Kupferberg to discuss the position, they conferred about the importance of a program instilled with a person-centered philosophy. She’s excited to bring just that to the Maple Pointe community. From her first day as the Activities Coordinator of Country Cottage Memory Care, Tina was welcomed with open arms from both residents and staff. She believed the best way to execute a person-centered program was to start by observing the curriculum and to converse with the residents. With formal activities taking place daily from 10 a.m. to about 7:30 p.m., she first took it all in and then participated. Some of the activities have as many as 15 residents, while others could have four or five based on interests. It became clear that some of the favorite activities among this group are bingo, board games and a variety of arts and crafts projects.

Once she had gathered all the information, she and the newly formed team quickly began to work on some new ideas and put into place a cognitive program. Adding to the list of established activities are Brain Games — a series of word, visual, and auditory exercises to promote cerebral stimulation and participation. As discussions evolved, many of the residents told her that they enjoy travel. From those conversations, The Virtual Traveler developed — where staff and residents watch tourism videos and discuss their travels. These sessions quickly became another program, International Day. On a monthly basis residents select a country and spend the day eating the food from the selected nation, watch tourism videos, listen and dance to the native music and play the games from that foreign land. This is a total sensory experience based on the residents’ interests. “With each passing day I felt more confident that I could make a difference based on Chelsea Senior Living’s long-term goal,” Tina says, which is “to provide assisted living services through a comprehensive approach of personalized support and integrated care. We did a major renovation and opened in the middle of the pandemic, so we took many precautions in re-opening. It began as online store in 2009, selling art posters designed by McDonald, a lifelong artist and graphic designer, and quickly took off. “Around that time we also started doing outdoor art festivals and markets around Long Island and New York City. The type of art we made kept expanding, and we expanded into selling the art wholesale. “We want people to know that we’re more than just an art frame store,” says McDonald. “We do custom framing, which is what we want to expand upon. We ship directly from our store; no need to go to the post office. You can order something right off of our website and have it shipped to your house. Ultimately, we want to become the go-to place around here for both custom framing and local-based artwork.” He opened in 2016 on North Park Avenue and then relocated to his current location. McDonald lives in Rockville Centre, so it was a natural choice for him to maintain his business there. “Rockville Centre is a great place to raise our kids, which is why we moved here,” he says. “But as far as the business goes, it’s also a good place to become involved with the community. town, and we support the Chamber of Commerce. I successfully turned what was just a website into a full-on store. I was able to leave my art job to focus on the website and from there built it into the store.”

Actions Speak provides specialized support for kids

ctions Speak is a program developed by a licensed occupational therapist, Lauren Vaughan, M.S., OTR/L, and a licensed speechlanguage pathologist, Frieda Shmuel-Markowitz, M.S., CCC-SLP, with the plan to target language and movement skills simultaneously. They use a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses speech/language, motor and emotional regulation skills within one group class. It is an opportunity to engage in positive peer interaction within classes with a small instructor to child ratio. After almost a year of planning and developing structured evidence-based programs, Actions Speak launched in the beginning of May. Actions Speak will be offering its first series of classes this summer, starting the week of July 12. Three different class models will be offered initially. Tiny Titans (18 months-3 years), Yoga and You (3-5 years) and Yes I Can! Obstacle Course (5-8 years) target different
age ranges and all have different objectives. Their mission is to create learning experiences for children and teens of all ages that foster their imagination and curiosity. They do this by providing opportunities for clients to engage in FUNctional activities that target their overall daily living skills. The hope is that these experiences will encourage clients to take control of their learning environment and be excited to continue their educational journey for years to come. Frieda and Lauren understand that family members are the backbone to the development of their children. lmont Cultural Center was founded in 2009 but in 2019 became fully engaged in community issues and issues that affect families in New York State. Its goal is to bring all cultures together resulting in stronger communities. The innovative nonprofit is the gateway for successful organizing and mobilization in nonpartisan voter education, civic education and a myriad of issues that have plagued the advancement for success. This includes providing food for families in need, helping immigrants understand the systems and resources established for them; in the hope that they will be active participants in their communities. And this is done through workshops and training with coalition partners. Resources are provided by volunteers and through grants and donations that enable this vital work to continue.
She and her team tirelessly support families whatever the need. “My mission is to make sure we no longer have insecurity in areas of food, housing education. My long-term plan is to obtain a building where all families will have a safe space to gather, that is rich in resources and culture.” With the help of many partners, the focus is on building a coalition that brings to light the many issues faced in our communities. “Anyone who is crazy enough to run a nonprofit knows the biggest challenge is funding. Johnson adds. “I knew that but now I really know it. There is never enough funding to do the projects you want to do. The work is always more than the capacity to reach the goal, but somehow you do it because the outcome for families we help, whether it’s essential needs or issues based, it is worth it.”
Mimi Pierre Johnson, president/founder, is passionate about her multi-cultural community and devoted to residents’ needs. As she explains: “I live between an elementary school, a junior, and a senior high school. My thought has always been we need a space where these elementary students can come after school and continue to be children and gracefully enter their teenage years. Elmont and its surrounding communities had become very diverse, and this is why I

hen Amy and Russ Golan set eyes upon SoBol, they knew it was exactly what they needed. The native Long Islanders had raised four children and had 30 years as business partners behind them. Ironically, boredom during the Covid pandemic was the impetus that that led them to purchase a SoBol franchise. Bowls, smoothies, waffles, muffins, peanut butter and jelly melts are among the choices. No additives or added sugar are used … no junk! “Bowls” include Acai, Green, Mango-Pineapple, Pitaya, and Spirulina. Fruits are blended and layered with homemade granola, and topped with freshly cut fruits, and can be further customized. Choose from three sizes are. Think of fruit sundaes with no dairy — absolutely nothing to feel guilty about!
