little piece of France exists right here in Rockville Centre. Chat Noir, which began as a tea room in 2009, offers a sublime French experience — all day long.

“Our customers were simply amazing. We got by on takeout. There would be customers waiting in a line all the way down the block for our takeout, in any kind of weather; rain, snow, you name it.”

“Chat Noir offers a unique teahouse experience by day, and an elegant culinary affair by night,” says owner Melissa Kelly. “The casual yet upscale atmosphere makes for an ideal setting for dining with friends, family, clients, and business associates. With homemade croissants and brioche, and Michelineducated European dishes, our community has embraced us since day one and we pledge to provide a memorable experience.”

Melissa explains that this was part of the reason she took over; she was inspired by its success throughout the pandemic. “We never had to close our doors,” she says. “The clientele were simply amazing.” In the process Chat Noir has emerged as a real jewel of Nassau County. If you’re looking for an authentic French bistro experience with a friendly, family-oriented staff, Chat Noir is the place to visit. Whether your desire is a superb croissant, elegant tea service, a tasty dinner, or to celebrate a special occasion, Chat Noir provides solace from the ordinary.

What makes Chat Noir special, according to Melissa, is its sense of community. “It has a magic to it,” she says. “We’re a small staff. We’re like a little family. So, you know, we love our customers, and we love each other. It’s just a great little place.” The restaurant’s founder, Emma Tso, fell in love with Rockville Centre as an appealing neighborhood; also considered to be “restaurant central” in Nassau County. “She found the location [on Merrick Road] and fell in love with the building,” says Melissa. “It was an old building and it had just what she was looking for.” Rockville Centre may not be the only place for this charming spot; expansion may be on the horizon for the bustling restaurant. Melissa’s goal, as Chat Noir’s new owner, is both to maintain Tso’s dreams while looking ahead. “My mission is to give people a great experience,” she says. “To come in and feel like they’re part of the family, have good food and atmosphere, and leave happy. But my long-term plan is to hopefully open multiple locations.” Its success ironically is Chat Noir’s biggest challenge. While the restaurant industry as a whole, has struggled since the pandemic, Chat Noir has successfully persevered. Its biggest obstacle is having enough space for everybody.

“We have so many parties and unfortunately, not enough room for everybody,” says Melissa. “We hate turning people away, but thank God that business is that way. You’d rather be turning people away than begging them to come in.” “I think that we took a lot of things for granted before the pandemic,” she adds.“Sitting close to someone having a conversation, greeting someone with a hug, the little things like that. The pandemic slowed everything down, basically to a stop.” Nevertheless, Chat Noir prevailed throughout Covid, pivoting to a takeout-based business model as did most restaurateurs when the first wave of shutdowns hit Long Island.

here is no shortage of restaurants to visit in Rockville Centre. Often described as Nassau County’s ‘restaurant hub,’ it’s ever-changing with new spots to entice foodies. Yet the old standbys don’t miss a beat. That’s certainly the case with Frank’s. Under the helm of its current owner Chris Meyer, it’s been welcoming patrons for 20 years now, and shows no signs of slowing down. Unpretentious, friendly and satisfying, the restaurant is a favorite with families, couples out for date night and those celebrating a special occasion. Whatever the occasion, diners know they’ll have a memorable meal. The wide-ranging menu, of course, favors carnivores, But there are plenty of options for the non-meat eater as well. Frank’s Steaks is a casual but fine dining establishment with a reputation for serving the best quality foods available, notably prime cuts of beef. Their many signature dishes include a 16 oz. marinated skirt steak served with caramelized sautéed onions, a 24 oz. bone-in cowboy garlic ribeye steak (a customer favorite) and the 42 oz. porterhouse for two. If that’s not enough to excite your palate, there’s plenty more. The varied menu offers something for everyone, with an array of appetizers, salads, seafood, chicken, chops, sides and seasonal specials. Plus there are homemade desserts to entice you. Recommended are the petite skirt platter, apple-

wood-smoked slab bacon, Cajun calamari, burratta and arugula salad. bone-in filet mignon, baby back ribs, sesame-crusted tuna steak, New Zealand rack of lamb, Frank’s strip steak with melted Stilton cheese, and surf and turf.

In addition to his desserts, Meyer is also involved with some of the signature food items.“My specialty [on the main menu] is Cajun remoulade, which goes with our Cajun calamari,” he adds. “It’s a dipping sauce, and it consists of 25 different ingredients.”

The restaurant will mark its 20th anniversary at its Rockville Centre location in October. And Meyer has been with it every step of the way, starting with its opening night in 2002, working as a waiter. “Eight years ago, I had an opportunity to become the general manager as well as partner; one of the owners,’’ he said. “So, you know, it’s been a while. Having just turned 40-years-old, I’ve spent half my life working here.”

Meyer is fully focused on all aspects of the restaurant — from the front of the house, to the kitchen to his management role. “I enjoy working the front door; I’m definitely a people person,” he says. “And I enjoy reading my guests and getting to know all my guests, who now I consider very close friends and family. But I also have a passion for the kitchen. So if one of my guys is not able to make it, if they’re on vacation or sick, I could work all three positions. I wear many hats here.”

It’s the clientele that motivated Meyer to join the management team.“I had a vision, I saw an opportunity,” he says. “I was serving and bartending while going to Hofstra, and I saw it had a very good base. I’ve seen a lot of changes in this business through the years, but one thing that’s remained constant is the amazing clientele. We love serving this community.” There’s also another side to Meyer: he’s Frank’s Steaks’ pastry chef as well. He’s just as passionate about a great ending to the meal as he is about the entire Frank’s experience. His signature dessert is a homemade New York style cheesecake.“I serve it in what I call an oversized coffee mug, a ceramic mug and graham cracker crust to deep dish. Super, super creamy. We get unbelievable reviews on it. I serve it with a homemade raspberry puree. That’s my special dessert. I also make an apple raisin cobbler, homemade chocolate mousse (another standout). We always offer different dessert specials.” Meyer keeps all of his secrets and recipes to himself except for his cousin, Victoria Dugan, who he has trained to become his assistant pastry chef.

Like others in the industry, Frank’s needed to pivot — quickly — to withstand the pandemic. “We had to reinvent the wheel. “Now we have a new outdoor seating area with a patio and some propane fire pits. We encourage people to sit out there while they wait for dinner and enjoy a summer night. Or if you want to have dinner on that outdoor patio, it’s fully covered but it’s open air, and it’s very Covid-friendly.” While Frank’s is successful with its current model, it’s looking for ways to reinvent itself. That includes a seasonally-themed approach to dining. “We started with Christmas,” he says. “And then we did Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter. Now we have our patriotic display all summer long. Come September, we will be focused on our very first autumn themed display.”

Crazy about those sweets

fter a lengthy delay due to the pandemic, Rockville Centre can finally Go Nuts for Sweets —the apt name for the village’s enticing sweet spot, which opened in February. Owner and founder David Thomas is thrilled to finally realize his dream after the lengthy delay. In 2019, David and his wife Jenitza signed a lease for the location that would eventually become Go Nuts for Sweets, but the Covid shutdown soured their plans. Now, all is looking sweeter than ever. The candy/dessert shop offfers some 200 varieties of packaged and bulk candies in dispensers, with playful shapes and names such as “Funny Bones” and “Silly Assorted Bananas,” along with standards such as chocolate-covered pretzels and M&Ms and 18 types of fudge, including birthday cake and cookie dough. The menu also includes bubble teas, ice cream (12 flavors), cakes, pastries, nuts, and may chocolates items. Custom gifts for all occasions are also available upon request. As is popular these days, mix-ins are offered with the ice cream; customers can choose from an assortment of 20 cereals to create their own ice cream treat. Go Nuts for Sweets is a passion project for David and his wife. “We wanted to do something fun for the community and for the kids,” he says. “We like putting smiles on kids’ faces. And also, we wanted to start somewhere where our kids will come and learn the business and to have fun. We wanted to do something we would be proud of.” With David’s background in logistics and Jenitza’s retail and customer service expertise, the couple is well suited to the demands of operating their own business. “Our goal is to become a staple of the community,” he says. “We want to be able support the community however we can.” As Go Nuts for Sweets becomes firmly established here, other offerings are on the horizon, including children’s birthday parties and other special events.

It began as online store in 2009, selling art posters designed by McDonald, a lifelong artist and graphic designer, and quickly took off. “Around that time we also started doing outdoor art festivals and markets around Long Island and New York City. The type of art we made kept expanding, and we expanded into selling the art wholesale. We sell to many museum stores, national parks, resort stores and other larger accounts like Home Goods, Ron Jon and L.L. Bean.” McDonald’s goal is to provide one-of-a-kind products that appeal to a broad demographic: savvy design consumers, those who take pride in where they come from, and those who want to have a lasting memory of where they have been. “We want people to know that we’re more than just an art frame store,” says McDonald. “We do custom framing, which is what we want to expand upon. We ship directly from our store; no need to go to the post office. You can order something right off of our website and have it shipped to your house. Ultimately, we want to become the go-to place around here for both custom framing and local-based artwork.” He opened in 2016 on North Park Avenue and then relocated to his current location. McDonald lives in Rockville Centre, so it was a natural choice for him to maintain his business there. “Rockville Centre is a great place to raise our kids, which is why we moved here,” he says. “But as far as the business goes, it’s also a good place to become involved with the community. We do business for the

town, and we support the Chamber of Commerce. I successfully turned what was just a website into a full-on store. I was able to leave my art job to focus on the website and from there built it into the store.”

even weeks ago, Tina Miller started in her new role as Country Cottage Coordinator at Maple Pointe in Rockville Centre, a division of Chelsea Senior Living. Upon entering the doors, her career was starting a new chapter. With over 30 years of experience facilitating person-centered services with people with cognitive challenges, ranging from developmental disabilities to the mentally ill, this would be the first time in her career in an elder care environment. Her goals are fully in sync with Maple Pointe’s mission statement: For over 30 years, Chelsea Senior Living has remained dedicated to fulfilling our mission to provide a comfortable, safe, and secure home for those who need help with the activities of daily living, in a caring atmosphere of respect and dignity. When meeting with Executive Director Melissa Kupferberg to discuss the position, they conferred about the importance of a program instilled with a person-centered philosophy. She’s excited to bring just that to the Maple Pointe community. From her first day as the Activities Coordinator of Country Cottage Memory Care, Tina was welcomed with open arms from both residents and staff. She believed the best way to execute a person-centered program was to start by observing the curriculum and to converse with the residents. With formal activities taking place daily from 10 a.m. to about 7:30 p.m., she first took it all in and then participated. Some of the activities have as many as 15 residents, while others could have four or five based on interests. It became clear that some of the favorite activities among this group are bingo, board games and a variety of arts and crafts projects.

Adding to the list of established activities are Brain Games — a series of word, visual, and auditory exercises to promote cerebral stimulation and participation. From those conversations, The Virtual Traveler developed — where staff and residents watch tourism videos and discuss their travels. These sessions quickly became another program, International Day. On a monthly basis residents select a country and spend the day eating the food from the selected nation, watch tourism videos, listen and dance to the native music and play the games from that foreign land. This is a total sensory experience based on the residents’ interests. “With each passing day I felt more confident that I could make a difference based on Chelsea Senior Living’s long-term goal,” Tina says, which is “to provide assisted living services through a comprehensive approach of personalized support and integrated care. Every resident is treated with the utmost respect, and given the opportunity to thrive in our warm and nurturing environment. Owners (and founders) Peter Kambatis and Alex Marquetti introduced their concept in Forest Hills, Queens to great success. Now they’re taking on Long Island. “Long Island doesn’t really have any authentic Latin fusion cuisine restaurants,” according to Peter. “We saw how well we did in the Queens location. So we opted to come here. Since I’ve already owned the bakery next door, Sugarberry Cafe, for four years, I knew the neighborhood.” Rockville Centre is home to a wide range of cuisines, but nothing quite like this. “What is was always lacking was exactly what we had over in Queens — Latin fusion,” he says. His partner, Alex, noting the community’s Mexican-centric dining emphasis,adds “there was a bit of a void to be filled with our concept … plus capitalizing on Rockville Centre’s nightlife has been very successful.”

They use a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses speech/language, motor and emotional regulation skills within one group class. Park Pizza: A dream come true in Wantagh

he Covid-19 pandemic dramatically restructured many lives. But for some it turned into an opportunity — as for Joe Lotito, owner of Park Pizza. “I worked two jobs; I was working in an office,” says Lotito. “So I was doing the nine to five thing. And when the pandemic hit, I saw a lot of people getting laid off, which wasn’t great. I was working with a friend of mine who had a pizzeria, and he was doing well when it hit. And that’s when I decided I wanted to control my own destiny and open my own business.” Lotito took over in February of 2022. Having worked for two pizzerias in the past prior to Park Pizza, he was prepared for whatever challenges would come his way. “I have 17 years of experience in the pizza industry,” he says. “Then I found this place and

wanted to own a business myself.” His businss plan is simple: provide the community with the best pizza, using all-natural ingredients. “What separates me from other places would be that I use quality ingredients. Everything we use is made fresh. Nothing is powdered or jarred. We use fresh tomatoes, fresh onions, all high quality.” Park Pizza’s location is well situated. “This place is in a nice neighborhood, he says. “I love the beach; we’re right by the beach. And it was a nice little place, something that really gets me started. Something I could handle for my first place.
