t has been observed that life in general has become more complicated, but this is especially true when it comes to applying for college.

The process, which can get complicated and nerveracking, should begin with the student sitting down with his or her parents to clarify objectives, according to Steven Roy Goodman, an educational consultant and the author of "College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family."

"This is a very important step," he says. "You, the student, can't assume that your parents will agree with you about what you should study or what colleges you should apply to. In fact, your parents may not agree with each other on these points."

Topics that should be discussed include possible majors and career interests, whether a liberal arts or career-oriented institution is more appropriate, whether the student will choose a college close to home or across the country and how to maximize financial aid.

"You need to flesh out these details before starting the admissions process. For example, one parent may not believe in women's colleges, while the other may refuse to pay for a liberal arts education," Goodman says.

The student and parents should determine what issues they can agree on and what, if anything, are deal breakers.

However, the student must assume the leading role in the college search.

"Someone has got to be the quarterback. Ultimately, the student needs to accept the responsibility for his or her education," Goodman believes.

Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, advises students and parents to work together to develop a list of institutions to which the student will apply.

"Make a list in September and the student should be thrilled in April when the admissions letters come out," she says.

When it comes to completing college applications, many students include long lists of extracurricular and community activities to impress the admissions officer or committee. This, various experts agree, often isn't as effective as the applicants may think.

It is a mistake for a student to try to present him or herself to the college as a well-rounded individual, Goodman says. "It's a lopsided world. The days of a student dabbling in a long list of clubs so they can be put on an application are gone," he says. "I advise students to do what you want to do and do a lot of it."

A student is better served by exploring a passion or special interest in depth and detailing that on the application, according to former college admissions counselor Whitney Bruce of Accepted.com. "Students miss a valuable opportunity to tell the admissions staff what makes them tick," she says.

Homayoun cites the example of a student who liked to explore the outdoors and was involved with an Outward Bound program, eventually winning a leadership award.

Homayoun and other consultants also advise students not to overlook work experience. "Students sometimes forget the value of work and what it can provide," Bruce says. "Someone

Many colleges and universities require a college admission essay as part of their admission application, and scholarship applications often include one or more essays in addition to such objective information as grades and test scores. The typical question asks you to share personal information-allowing the selection committee to get to know you-such as your plans or goals, an important event in your life, your philosophy and/or beliefs, or your financial situation.

Writing this college admission essay is an opportunity for you to stand out among the applicants and to prove you're the most deserving candidate. Be sure to keep certain things in mind as you write this essay: exactly what • Consider the question asks. Then list some relevant main ideas; use this list as an informal outline for your essay.

Don't write a "generic" essay that could pass for one that any other applicant could have written. Everything in the essay should reveal something about YOU and your unique situation. Any reader of your essay should feel as if he or she knows you personally.

Remember that committee members are seeking the applicant who fits the mission of their institution and is worthy of their award. Tailor your college admission essay topic with their perspective in mind, and work to convince them that you're the right candidate.

If you have trouble thinking of ideas, be resourceful. Ask people who know you well what they would say about you. If someone has written a letter of recommendation for you, re-read it. Which accomplishments listed on your résumé might interest the committee?

Don't simply repeat information that is already on your application form or in your résumé. Your essay should include specific incidents and concrete examples.

Don't use long words and obscure vocabulary simply to impress the committee; doing so will come across as artificial and showy.

Follow guidelines regarding such things as font size and essay length. Sometimes a typed essay is required; other times, you are required to hand-write it. Sometimes it should be on the application form; other times, it must be on a separate piece of paper. No matter how good your college admission essay is, failure to follow instructions will make a negative impression and may actually disqualify you.

The appearance of your essay is important. Spell all words correctly; follow grammar and punctuation rules; and keep your paper neat. The committee may not meet you personally; this essay may be the sole basis for their selection. A messy paper or an essay full of errors will cause them to see you as uncaring or unqualified, despite the inaccuracy of this judgment.

Save your essay! There is nothing wrong with using the same ideas-and occasionally even the same college admission essay-for several applications. Each time, make revisions so that the essay topic responds specifically to the question(s).

Although you have used it for other applications, the committee should not be able to tell that this essay wasn't originally written as a response to their question.

Academic performance remains the most important factor when it comes to college admissions, according to Goodman.

"The No. 1 thing that counts is academic performance. You have to keep up your academic standards," he says. "The rule of thumb is to take the most rigorous academic load possible without killing yourself."

Most consultants advise that an individual apply to between seven and 12 colleges.

"I suggest that a student put together a balanced list of institutions. This might be three of the most selective institutions or those that it would be a stretch for the student to get into," Bruce says. "Students should apply to three colleges where they have a good chance of being admitted, as well as three safe choices where they are fairly certain of getting in."

The essay remains an important part of any college application. According to Bruce, the best essays tell a story and give the admissions committee a better look at the applicant. "The essay is the opportunity to fill a hole. Look at your application and see what information about you might be missing," she says.

Homayoun recommends that, beginning in September, students devote two hours a day to working on their college applications. "If they set aside a block of time each day and keep to the schedule, they should be done with their applications by Thanksgiving," she says. "It also helps decrease the stress involved with the whole process."

When working with high-school students applying to college, Goodman stresses the need to develop good writing skills – and not just because of the admissions essay. "Some students say that they are going to major in biology or engineering and don't have to write well," he says. "I explain that good writing skills are necessary in all fields. For example, a biologist will need to concisely explain his work in a report that others can understand."

hen attempting to gain acceptance to the college of their choice, teenagers quickly learn the admission requirements extend beyond their report cards.

Colleges weigh academics considerably, but many institutions of higher learning also want well-rounded students who will make great additions to the community as well as the classroom.

One of the things admissions boards look for in an applicant is his or her track record of volunteering.

Though students likely won't be denied admission if they have never volunteered, it never hurts to have volunteer work on a resume, and some students have even earned scholarship money thanks to their record of service.

Parents who want to help their child find the right volunteer opportunity should consider the child's hobbies and interests.

Oftentimes, a child's favorite hobby matches up perfectly with a volunteer opportunity.

When such a match is made, teenagers tend to look forward to their volunteer work and might even find a career path they'd like to follow.

The Athlete Students who love sports are likely to discover a host of volunteer opportunities at their disposal. The Special Olympics is a rewarding volunteer opportunity for adults and children alike. Relying heavily on volunteers, the Special Olympics needs volunteers to fill positions that include athlete escort, scorekeeper, cheerleader, and even fans.

Events occur 365 days a year, ensuring there is a local opportunity for every teen regardless of how hectic his or her schedule might be.

The Traveler Teenagers who love to travel can combine that passion with their desire to help the less fortunate. Many programs are designed for families who want to go on service-oriented vacations. For example, when signing up for such a program, a volunteer might visit a less fortunate country and help build and renovate existing structures. Global Citizens Network is one of many such programs, and families will work side-by-side with fellow volunteers as well members of the local community they're helping. Younger volunteers often find service-oriented vacations especially eye-

opening, providing a different perspective of the world they might otherwise never be able to witness or understand.

The Teacher Teenagers who enjoy teaching others might find a local coaching opportunity suits them best. Coaching doesn't have to be limited to sports, though grade-school aged children often look up to the local high school athletes and genuinely appreciate when such athletes take the time to work with them personally. Additional teachingbased volunteer opportunities include the local music program for the musically inclined teen or reading to younger kids through the local library's reading program.

The Builder Some teenagers are naturally inclined to building, and they might even be off to engineering school once they earn their high school diplomas. Before applying to the school of their choice, teenagers with a more mechanical inclination might find a volunteering opportunity such as Habitat for Humanity is the perfect fit. No previous building experience is required, and volunteers both young and old often find their time erecting homes for the less fortunate among the most rewarding moments of their lives.

When attempting to find the right volunteering opportunity for their child, parents should consider their kids' favorite hobbies and then find a volunteering opportunity that enables them to combine that passion with their desire to help others.

Even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really know if college is for you, there are many sound reasons to consider a community college as a smart choice. Here are some facts about community colleges to consider as you plan this important next step.

Affordable Community colleges are considerably less expensive than four-year colleges and universities. Tuition at a community college can cost 30 percent of what one would pay at a public four-year college or university.

Tuition at a private residential college can cost more than ten times the tuition at a community college. Many students start more affordable undergraduate studies at a community college, then transfer credits to a four-year school and complete their degree. By attending a local community college, students can live at home and save on room and board for the first couple of

student's success in school is measured by the assignments completed and tests he takes. The students who garner the best grades and do well in class are often those who are effective listeners and note-takers.

Professor Dennis Jertz of Seton Hall University has said that taking lecture notes effectively is one of the skills students must learn to make the transition from high school to college careers. Note-taking is also necessary in the business world, making it a worthwhile skill to learn.

Despite its importance in higher learning, not much study has gone into the correlation between note-taking and performance improvement. As a result, statistics supporting the importance of effective note-taking do not exist. But it stands to reason that the student who takes good notes, and studies well from them, has a sporting chance to improve his or her grades over others with poor notes.

Learning Note-Taking It may not seem as such, but note-taking can almost be a lesson all its own. If only students could enroll in Note-Taking 101.

Some elementary and high-school teachers attempt to teach strategies for taking notes, including developing outlines, but many students still struggle to maintain the essen-

tials as they move through school. It can be confusing knowing just how much to write down without creating a novel or having notes so scant that they provide little information when it comes time to study.

There are many systems of note-taking that a student can learn. These include using graphic representations to map out interconnected concepts. Outlines or charts can group terminology together with related ideas. There are other techniques that use cue words to trigger recollection of facts and dates. Mnemonic devices help recall information. Students can experiment with different methods until they find a system that works well and offers measurable success.

Improving Listening Skills No matter what method of note-taking is used, adequate listening skills are necessary to take effective notes. This helps students transfer what the professor is saying into ideas that can be put down on paper. Staring off into space or having your mind drift can cause a student to miss out on key parts of a

lecture. To improve note-taking skills, a student must first improve listening skills.

Sit up closer to the teacher or professor.

This enables eye-to-eye contact that may help a student focus. It may also trigger visual clues to a professor to gauge whether the class is catching on or missing what's being taught. It's also advantageous from a practical standpoint. It enables students to better hear what's going on. If the professor is garbled or inaudible when sitting far away, moving closer is essential, especially in a large lecture hall.

Remove distractions. When a student enters the classroom, he or she should be ready to learn. That means silencing mobile devices and gearing the mind toward the lessons. Not every lecture will be exhilarating, so students should make a conscious effort to pay attention. Limiting distractions can help.

Keys to Note-taking Once listening skills have improved, students can go onto to other note-taking pointers.

Sequencing material is important, so notes should be dated and numbered. If references are made to chapters that correlate to the textbook, jot those down so they can strengthen the notes.

Students should consider writing notes on one side of the page so that they can each be laid out side-by-side. Looseleaf paper works well, or notes can be typed and printed out.

Students should develop their own method of abbreviations and symbols to cut down on the amount of writing needed.

Notes needn't be in full sentences; phrases are equally effective.

inding the perfect college is kind of like investigative journalism – you must do loads of research, ask all the right questions and visit the scene to gather first-hand knowledge and experience.

When it comes to researching potential schools, there is nothing better than the college visit.

II College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that.

The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls.

Families should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Consider these tips from Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning.

Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasn't done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life – sports, extracurriculars, campus/ enrollment size, dorm life, religious affiliations, academic strengths and offerings – are important to them and use those criteria.

Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your child's academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit.

Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from teachers or tutors with expertise in these tests.

“The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing double-digit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once,” says Bavaria.

Go while college is in session. Summers and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which won't give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience.

Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question every-

one – students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like financial aid and safety.You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

f you are a high school student or a parent of one, and you’re trying to decide on where to attend college, be sure to get on campus and visit top choices and a variety of school types.

Experts report that visiting a school can give you a close-up look; a chance to learn about the course work and experience a school’s environment before you make a commitment.

To get the most out of the visit, here are some suggestions from the nation’s No. 1 financial services company specializing in education—Sallie Mae: Investigate different kinds of schools. For instance, visit both a large and small school or a campus in an urban setting and then a campus in a small town. If you can’t visit in person, see if the school offers virtual tours.

Do some prep work. Before your visit, decide what you want to learn about the school and put together a list of questions. Use the same list for every school so you can make fair comparisons.

Most counselors suggest scheduling visits from March through late April of your junior year in high school or in the fall of your senior year.

Plan ahead. Call the admissions office to arrange your visit at least two weeks in advance. See if you can sit in on a class or two and schedule interviews with faculty and admissions staff. Meet with admissions staff to verify admission requirements and to discuss costs and financial aid.

Get the most out of your visit. If the school offers an escorted tour, take advantage of it. You’ll get access to more of the campus, and your escort can be a great source of candid information. The same goes for information sessions, if offered.

Be sure to talk to students, the faculty and the admissions staff. Ask students what they like best and least; ask them what they’d change.

Trust your instincts and take notes. Pay attention to how you feel, especially your first impressions. Is this where you want to live for four years?

Follow up. After you visit a college, remember to send thank-you notes to everyone you met with. It’s a little courtesy that will help get you noticed.

Understanding the financial aid letter

or college-bound students and their families, the arrival of a school's financial aid award package means it's time to pull out the calculator and start budgeting.

To evaluate the financial aid offer, consider both the aid package and what the college costs. It's quite possible that the most expensive school on your list might not cost you the most, depending on the package awarded by each school.

"Take your time to understand each item on your financial aid award letter so that you can compare award packages and determine which to accept," said Martha Holler, spokesperson for Sallie Mae, the college financial services company. "Looking at the bottom-line sticker price can be misleading. What's most important is the amount you will be expected to cover out of your own pocket."

Once you receive a school's award letter, review it carefully, and keep the following questions in mind: What are the enrollment requirements for grants and scholarships?

Is the award package for one year or all four years?

Can you maintain the required grade-point average?

Is student employment part of the financial aid package?

If the package offers student loans, are you willing to make that financial commitment?

Once you and your family have answered these questions, the next step is to respond as quickly as possible to the school. If you fail to meet the deadline listed in the award letter, you risk having the money given to someone else.

Comparing Costs Compare all the financial aid packages offered from the various colleges that you receive award letters from. Pay special attention to the type of aid that is awarded and make your college decision based on each college’s award package. You can decline to accept any or all of the aid that is offered. The U.S. Department of Education provides a simple worksheet to help you compare financial aid awards.

Dealing with a Gap Colleges will often admit students but not meet their financial need. This is called “gapping”. When a college does this, they are basically saying that they need to meet their admissions quota, but aren’t willing to offer you any incentive to attend. In some cases the gap can be huge. When a college does this, they are hoping you will decline their offer of admission. What should you do? Decline it! They obviously don’t value your contribution to their student body. Choose a college that is willing to give you substantial aid because they want you to attend.

Negotiations If you receive multiple awards you can use them to negotiate for additional aid. Use the awards as a bargaining tool with colleges and attempt to negotiate more aid.

ow can you help guide your children to the most enriching after-school activities? It helps ďŹ rst of all to think about the options. even moderately good at, it can have a negative effect on his self-perception.â&#x20AC;?

So listen to your child. Look in particular for persistent expressions of interest rather than something a child mentions once or twice. Figure out what sparked the interest.

Was it a friend? Was it seeing the activity?

Then ask yourself whether your child is physically old enough for the activity or what the benefits will be.

If a child doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t express a particular interest vocally, look for other clues.â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know our children better than anyone else,â&#x20AC;? says Newman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a parent, you have some [indication] of what your child might be interested in or where his strong suits are.â&#x20AC;? For example, for a child who is always doodling, you might suggest art lessons. For a child who keeps trying to reach the basketball hoop, mention the basketball team. For the child who loves to argue, propose debate.

For the child who wants to be involved in multiple activities, force him to prioritize.

Or if your child jumps into activities and

then quits, allow such experimenting but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t invest in the necessary equipment right away. For example, if your child decides she wants horseback riding or guitar lessons, borrow or rent or buy used items until you see a deep commitment.

Activities and College Admission Whatever you choose, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overdo it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happened today is that parenting has become this competitive sport and the trophy is to get your child into a good college,â&#x20AC;? Newman says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To that end, children are overscheduled and they have absolutely no down time. For some children, this works fine, but for the majority, the pressure is

Sometimes the choice for an appropriate outside activity comes from your own goals for your child. t has been observed that life in general has become more complicated, but this is especially true when it comes to applying for college.

The process, which can get complicated and nerve-racking, should begin with the student sitting down with his or her parents to clarify objectives, according to Steven Roy Goodman, an educational consultant and the author of "College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family."

"This is a very important step," he says. "You, the student, can't assume that your parents will agree with you about what you should study or what colleges you should apply to. In fact, your parents may not agree with each other on these points."

Topics that should be discussed include possible majors and career interests, whether a liberal arts or career-oriented institution is more appropriate, whether the student will choose a college close to home or across the country and how to maximize financial aid.

Many colleges and universities require a college admission essay as part of their admission application, and scholarship applications often include one or more essays in addition to such objective information as grades and test scores. The typical question asks you to share personal information-allowing the selection committee to get to know you-such as your plans or goals, an important event in your life, your philosophy and/or beliefs, or your financial situation.

Writing this college admission essay is an opportunity for you to stand out among the applicants and to prove you're the most deserving candidate. Be sure to keep certain things in mind as you write this essay: exactly what • Consider the question asks. Then list some relevant main ideas; use this list as an informal outline for your essay.

Don't write a "generic" essay that could pass for one that any other applicant could have written. Everything in the essay should reveal something about YOU and your unique situation. Any reader of your essay should feel as if he or she knows you personally.

Remember that committee members are seeking the applicant who fits the mission of their institution and is worthy of their award. Tailor your college admission essay topic with their perspective in mind, and work to convince them that you're the right candidate.

If you have trouble thinking of ideas, be resourceful. Ask people who know you well what they would say about you. If someone has written a letter of recommendation for you, re-read it. Which accomplishments listed on your résumé might interest the committee?

Don't simply repeat information that is already on your application form or in your résumé. Your essay should include specific incidents and concrete examples.

Don't use long words and obscure vocabulary simply to impress the committee; doing so will come across as artificial and showy.

Follow guidelines regarding such things as font size and essay length. Sometimes a typed essay is required; other times, you are required to hand-write it. Sometimes it should be on the application form; other times, it must be on a separate piece of paper. No matter how good your college admission essay is, failure to follow instructions will make a negative impression and may actually disqualify you.

The appearance of your essay is important. Spell all words correctly; follow grammar and punctuation rules; and keep your paper neat. The committee may not meet you personally; this essay may be the sole basis for their selection. A messy paper or an essay full of errors will cause them to see you as uncaring or unqualified, despite the inaccuracy of this judgment.

Save your essay! There is nothing wrong with using the same ideas-and occasionally even the same college admission essay-for several applications. Each time, make revisions so that the essay topic responds specifically to the question(s).

Although you have used it for other applications, the committee should not be able to tell that this essay wasn't originally written as a response to their question.

The path to college for today's teens includes community service

hen attempting to gain acceptance to the college of their choice, teenagers quickly learn the admission requirements extend beyond their report cards.

Colleges weigh academics considerably, but many institutions of higher learning also want well-rounded students who will make great additions to the community as well as the classroom.

One of the things admissions boards look for in an applicant is his or her track record of volunteering. Tuition at a private residential college can cost more than ten times the tuition at a community college. Many students start more affordable undergraduate studies at a community college, then transfer credits to a four-year school and complete their degree. By attending a local community college, students can live at home and save on room and board for the first couple of

years. While attending a community college, students can also apply for financial aid, work-study programs and part-time job opportunities.

Flexible and Convenient Community colleges offer flexible schedules at convenient times for people who may have work or family responsibilities.

Many courses are available on weekends and evenings, and online courses provide 24/7 access. Students also have the option to attend on a part-time or full-time basis.

Certificate and Associates Degree Programs A variety of careers in technology, health care, service and the arts can begin with a two-year certificate or associates degree offered at community colleges. Certain specialized training programs, such as surgical technology, are available only at community colleges, like Nassau.

Accessible Community colleges are open-admission, which means that anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent can enroll.

Students with low GPAs or test scores preventing them from admission to four-year colleges can enroll in a community college and work to improve their academic record.

Admissions counselors at four-year institutions then place priority consideration on higher grades earned from the community college. Some students decide to get a head start on college and enroll for a few courses while still in high school.

Choices Community colleges offer academic transfer programs as well as vocational programs. Students can earn credit for core curriculum courses from a community college, at much less cost and in a better learning atmosphere than the same courses taken at a four-year institution. Most credits are accepted for transfer into many fouryear universities and count toward a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree. Students seeking careers in various fields, such as hospitality, nursing, criminal justice, fire science, office technology, paralegals, and paramedics can satisfy all their course requirements at a community college. student's success in school is measured by the assignments completed and tests he takes. The students who garner the best grades and do well in class are often those who are effective listeners and note-takers.

Professor Dennis Jertz of Seton Hall University has said that taking lecture notes effectively is one of the skills students must learn to make the transition from high school to college careers. Note-taking is also necessary in the business world, making it a worthwhile skill to learn.

Despite its importance in higher learning, not much study has gone into the correlation between note-taking and performance improvement. As a result, statistics supporting the importance of effective note-taking do not exist. But it stands to reason that the student who takes good notes, and studies well from them, has a sporting chance to improve his or her grades over others with poor notes.

Learning Note-Taking It may not seem as such, but note-taking can almost be a lesson all its own. If only students could enroll in Note-Taking 101.

Some elementary and high-school teachers attempt to teach strategies for taking notes, including developing outlines, but many students still struggle to maintain the essen-

tials as they move through school. It can be confusing knowing just how much to write down without creating a novel or having notes so scant that they provide little information when it comes time to study.

There are many systems of note-taking that a student can learn. These include using graphic representations to map out interconnected concepts. Outlines or charts can group terminology together with related ideas. There are other techniques that use cue words to trigger recollection of facts and dates. Mnemonic devices help recall information. Students can experiment with different methods until they find a system that works well and offers measurable success.

Improving Listening Skills No matter what method of note-taking is used, adequate listening skills are necessary to take effective notes. This helps students transfer what the professor is saying into ideas that can be put down on paper. Staring off into space or having your mind drift can cause a student to miss out on key parts of a

lecture. To improve note-taking skills, a student must first improve listening skills.

Sit up closer to the teacher or professor.

This enables eye-to-eye contact that may help a student focus. It may also trigger visual clues to a professor to gauge whether the class is catching on or missing what's being taught. It's also advantageous from a practical standpoint. It enables students to better hear what's going on. If the professor is garbled or inaudible when sitting far away, moving closer is essential, especially in a large lecture hall.

Remove distractions. When a student enters the classroom, he or she should be ready to learn. That means silencing mobile devices and gearing the mind toward the lessons. Not every lecture will be exhilarating, so students should make a conscious effort to pay attention. Limiting distractions can help.

Keys to Note-Taking Once listening skills have improved, students can go onto to other note-taking pointers.

Sequencing material is important, so notes should be dated and numbered. If references are made to chapters that correlate to the textbook, jot those down so they can strengthen the notes.

Students should consider writing notes on one side of the page so that they can each be laid out side-by-side. Looseleaf paper works well, or notes can be typed and printed out.

Students should develop their own method of abbreviations and symbols to cut down on the amount of writing needed.

Notes needn't be in full sentences; phrases are equally effective.

For example, when signing up for such a program, a volunteer might visit a less fortunate country and help build and renovate existing structures. or college-bound students and their families, the arrival of a school's ďŹ nancial aid award package means it's time to pull out the calculator and start budgeting.

To evaluate the financial aid offer, consider both the aid package and what the college costs. It's quite possible that the most expensive school on your list might not cost you the most, depending on the package awarded by each school.

"Take your time to understand each item on your financial aid award letter so that you can compare award packages and determine which to accept," said Martha Holler, spokesperson for Sallie Mae, the college financial services company. "Looking at the bottom-line sticker price can be misleading. What's most important is the amount you will be expected to cover out of your own pocket."

Once you receive a school's award letter, review it carefully, and keep the following questions in mind: What are the enrollment requirements for grants and scholarships?

Is the award package for one year or all four years?

Can you maintain the required grade-point average?

Is student employment part of the financial aid package?

If the package offers student loans, are you willing to make that financial commitment?

Once you and your family have answered these questions, the next step is to respond as quickly as possible to the school. If you fail to meet the deadline listed in the award letter, you risk having the money given to someone else.

Comparing Costs Compare all the financial aid packages offered from the various colleges that you receive award letters from. Pay special attention to the type of aid that is awarded and make your college decision based on each collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award package. You can decline to accept any or all of the aid that is offered. The U.S. Department of Education provides a simple worksheet to help you compare financial aid awards.

Dealing with a Gap Colleges will often admit students but not meet their financial need. This is called â&#x20AC;&#x153;gappingâ&#x20AC;?. When a college does this, they are basically saying that they need to meet their admissions quota, but arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t willing to offer you any incentive to attend. In some cases the gap can be huge. When a college does this, they are hoping you will decline their offer of admission. What should you do? Decline it! They obviously donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t value your contribution to their student body. Choose a college that is willing to give you substantial aid because they want you to attend.

Negotiations If you receive multiple awards you can use them to negotiate for additional aid. Use the awards as a bargaining tool with colleges and attempt to negotiate more aid.

t has been observed that life in general has become more complicated, but this is especially true when it comes to applying for college.

The process, which can get complicated and nerve-racking, should begin with the student sitting down with his or her parents to clarify objectives, according to Steven Roy Goodman, an educational consultant and the author of "College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family."

"This is a very important step," he says. "You, the student, can't assume that your parents will agree with you about what you should study or what colleges you should apply to. In fact, your parents may not agree with each other on these points."

Many colleges and universities require a college admission essay as part of their admission application, and scholarship applications often include one or more essays in addition to such objective information as grades and test scores. The typical question asks you to share personal information-allowing the selection committee to get to know you-such as your plans or goals, an important event in your life, your philosophy and/or beliefs, or your financial situation.

Writing this college admission essay is an opportunity for you to stand out among the applicants and to prove you're the most deserving candidate. Be sure to keep certain things in mind as you write this essay: exactly what • Consider the question asks. Then list some relevant main ideas; use this list as an informal outline for your essay.

Don't write a "generic" essay that could pass for one that any other applicant could have written. Everything in the essay should reveal something about YOU and your unique situation. Any reader of your essay should feel as if he or she knows you personally.

Remember that committee members are seeking the applicant who fits the mission of their institution and is worthy of their award. Tailor your college admission essay topic with their perspective in mind, and work to convince them that you're the right candidate.

If you have trouble thinking of ideas, be resourceful. Ask people who know you well what they would say about you. If someone has written a letter of recommendation for you, re-read it. Which accomplishments listed on your résumé might interest the committee?

Don't simply repeat information that is already on your application form or in your résumé. Your essay should include specific incidents and concrete examples.

Don't use long words and obscure vocabulary simply to impress the committee; doing so will come across as artificial and showy.

Follow guidelines regarding such things as font size and essay length. Sometimes a typed essay is required; other times, you are required to hand-write it. Sometimes it should be on the application form; other times, it must be on a separate piece of paper. No matter how good your college admission essay is, failure to follow instructions will make a negative impression and may actually disqualify you.

The appearance of your essay is important. Spell all words correctly; follow grammar and punctuation rules; and keep your paper neat. The committee may not meet you personally; this essay may be the sole basis for their selection. A messy paper or an essay full of errors will cause them to see you as uncaring or unqualified, despite the inaccuracy of this judgment.

Save your essay! There is nothing wrong with using the same ideas-and occasionally even the same college admission essay-for several applications. Each time, make revisions so that the essay topic responds specifically to the question(s).

Although you have used it for other applications, the committee should not be able to tell that this essay wasn't originally written as a response to their question.

inding the perfect college is kind of like investigative journalism – you must do loads of research, ask all the right questions and visit the scene to gather first-hand knowledge and experience.

When it comes to researching potential schools, there is nothing better than the college visit.

II College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that.

The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls.

Families should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Consider these tips from Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning.

Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasn't done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life – sports, extracurriculars, campus/ enrollment size, dorm life, religious affiliations, academic strengths and offerings – are important to them and use those criteria.

Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your child's academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit.

Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from teachers or tutors with expertise in these tests.

“The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing double-digit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once,” says Bavaria.

Go while college is in session. Summers and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which won't give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience.

Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question every-

one – students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like financial aid and safety.You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

Experts report that visiting a school can give you a close-up look; a chance to learn about the course work and experience a school’s environment before you make a commitment.

To get the most out of the visit, here are some suggestions from the nation’s No. 1 financial services company specializing in education—Sallie Mae: Investigate different kinds of schools. For instance, visit both a large and small school or a campus in an urban setting and then a campus in a small town. If you can’t visit in person, see if the school offers virtual tours.

Do some prep work. Before your visit, decide what you want to learn about the school and put together a list of questions. Use the same list for every school so you can make fair comparisons.

Most counselors suggest scheduling visits from March through late April of your junior year in high school or in the fall of your senior year.

Plan ahead. Call the admissions office to arrange your visit at least two weeks in advance. See if you can sit in on a class or two and schedule interviews with faculty and admissions staff. Meet with admissions staff to verify admission requirements and to discuss costs and financial aid.

Get the most out of your visit. If the school offers an escorted tour, take advantage of it. You’ll get access to more of the campus, and your escort can be a great source of candid information. The same goes for information sessions, if offered.

Be sure to talk to students, the faculty and the admissions staff. Ask students what they like best and least; ask them what they’d change.

Trust your instincts and take notes. Pay attention to how you feel, especially your first impressions. Is this where you want to live for four years?

Follow up. After you visit a college, remember to send thank-you notes to everyone you met with. It’s a little courtesy that will help get you noticed.

Affordable Community colleges are considerably less expensive than four-year colleges and universities. Tuition at a community college can cost 30 percent of what one would pay at a public four-year college or university.

Tuition at a private residential college can cost more than ten times the tuition at a community college. Many students start more affordable undergraduate studies at a community college, then transfer credits to a four-year school and complete their degree. By attending a local community college, students can live at home and save on room and board for the first couple of

years. While attending a community college, students can also apply for financial aid, work-study programs and part-time job opportunities.

Flexible and Convenient Community colleges offer flexible schedules at convenient times for people who may have work or family responsibilities.

Many courses are available on weekends and evenings, and online courses provide 24/7 access. Students also have the option to attend on a part-time or full-time basis.

Certificate and Associates Degree Programs A variety of careers in technology, health care, service and the arts can begin with a two-year certificate or associates degree offered at community colleges. Certain specialized training programs, such as surgical technology, are available only at community colleges, like Nassau.

Admissions counselors at four-year institutions then place priority consideration on higher grades earned from the community college. Some students decide to get a head start on college and enroll for a few courses while still in high school.

Choices Community colleges offer academic transfer programs as well as vocational programs. Students can earn credit for core curriculum courses from a community college, at much less cost and in a better learning atmosphere than the same courses taken at a four-year institution. Most credits are accepted for transfer into many fouryear universities and count toward a bachelor’s degree. lthough many colleges and universities have heavy price tags these days, don't let that discourage you from applying. There are many financial aid options out there for college freshmen-from grants and scholarships to parent and student loansthat can help lower tuition costs and make college more affordable.

How much financial aid you need will depend on a variety of factors. If you are planning on living at home and attending a state university or a community college, you will probably not need as much assistance as you would living away from home at a private institution. So, in order to sort out your options, here's your first college lesson: Tips on Financing Your College Education.

Juniors: It's never too late to save! Even if you only save enough for books, your after-schooljob money will give you a head start. Also, you should attend financial aid information nights at your high school and top college choices.

Seniors: As a college admissions counselor, I know that senior year can be a hectic and emotional year for students, so my advice is to follow this easy timeline: November: Apply for your pin number for your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Most schools require this form to determine how much financial aid you will

need. The FAFSA financial aid form can be accessed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

January: Start filling out your FAFSA aid form.

After January 1, you and your parents/guardians can submit your information. Check with your colleges to see if they require any additional forms.

March: Review your SAR (Student Aid Report), a report of all the data submitted through your FAFSA, for accuracy. Be sure to update any current tax information.

April: Watch the mail for your acceptance and financial aid award letters. Compare your award letters, and then choose the best option for you and your family. Remember that college scholarships and grants are free money, while college loans have to be paid back.

May: Sign and return your financial aid award letter. Don't forget to decline the award letters from the colleges and universities that you will not be attending. If your award does not cover all your costs, you may need to apply for an educational loan through your local bank.

To evaluate the financial aid offer, consider both the aid package and what the college costs. It's quite possible that the most expensive school on your list might not cost you the most, depending on the package awarded by each school.

"Take your time to understand each item on your financial aid award letter so that you can compare award packages and determine which to accept," said Martha Holler, spokesperson for Sallie Mae, the college financial services company.

"Looking at the bottomline sticker price can be misleading. What's most important is the amount you will be expected to cover out of your own pocket."

Once you receive a school's award letter, review it carefully, and keep the following questions in mind: What are the enrollment requirements for grants and scholarships?

Is the award package for one year or all four years?

Can you maintain the required gradepoint average?

Is student employment part of the financial aid package?

If the package offers student loans, are you willing to make that financial commitment?

Once you and your family have answered these questions, the next step is to respond as quickly as possible to the school. If you fail to meet the deadline listed in the award letter, you risk having the money given to someone else.

Comparing Costs Compare all the financial aid packages offered from the various colleges that you receive award letters from. Dealing with a Gap Colleges will often admit students but not meet their financial need. This is called â&#x20AC;&#x153;gappingâ&#x20AC;?. When a college does this, they are basically saying that they need to meet their admissions quota, but arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t willing to offer you any incentive to attend. In some cases the gap can be huge. When a college does this, they are hoping you will decline their offer of admission. What should you do? Decline it! t has been observed that life in general has become more complicated, but this is especially true when it comes to applying for college.

The process, which can get complicated and nerveracking, should begin with the student sitting down with his or her parents to clarify objectives, according to Steven Roy Goodman, an educational consultant and the author of "College Admissions Together: It Takes a Family."

"This is a very important step," he says. "You, the student, can't assume that your parents will agree with you about what you should study or what colleges you should apply to. In fact, your parents may not agree with each other on these points."

Topics that should be discussed include possible majors and career interests, whether a liberal arts or career-oriented institution is more appropriate, whether the student will choose a college close to home or across the country and how to maximize financial aid.

"You need to flesh out these details before starting the admissions process. For example, one parent may not believe in women's colleges, while the other may refuse to pay for a liberal arts education," Goodman says.

The student and parents should determine what issues they can agree on and what, if anything, are deal breakers.

However, the student must assume the leading role in the college search.

"Someone has got to be the quarterback. Ultimately, the student needs to accept the responsibility for his or her education," Goodman believes.

Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, advises students and parents to work together to develop a list of institutions to which the student will apply.

"Make a list in September and the student should be thrilled in April when the admissions letters come out," she says.

When it comes to completing college applications, many students include long lists of extracurricular and community activities to impress the admissions officer or committee. This, various experts agree, often isn't as effective as the applicants may think.

It is a mistake for a student to try to present him or herself to the college as a well-rounded individual, Goodman says. "It's a lopsided world. The days of a student dabbling in a long list of clubs so they can be put on an application are gone," he says. "I advise students to do what you want to do and do a lot of it."

A student is better served by exploring a passion or special interest in depth and detailing that on the application, according to former college admissions counselor Whitney Bruce of Accepted.com. "Students miss a valuable opportunity to tell the admissions staff what makes them tick," she says.

Homayoun cites the example of a student who liked to explore the outdoors and was involved with an Outward Bound program, eventually winning a leadership award.

Homayoun and other consultants also advise students not to overlook work experience. "Students sometimes forget the value of work and what it can provide," Bruce says. "Someone

Many colleges and universities require a college admission essay as part of their admission application, and scholarship applications often include one or more essays in addition to such objective information as grades and test scores. The typical question asks you to share personal information-allowing the selection committee to get to know you-such as your plans or goals, an important event in your life, your philosophy and/or beliefs, or your financial situation.

Writing this college admission essay is an opportunity for you to stand out among the applicants and to prove you're the most deserving candidate. Be sure to keep certain things in mind as you write this essay: exactly what • Consider the question asks. Then list some relevant main ideas; use this list as an informal outline for your essay.

Don't write a "generic" essay that could pass for one that any other applicant could have written. Everything in the essay should reveal something about YOU and your unique situation. Any reader of your essay should feel as if he or she knows you personally.

Remember that committee members are seeking the applicant who fits the mission of their institution and is worthy of their award. Tailor your college admission essay topic with their perspective in mind, and work to convince them that you're the right candidate.

If you have trouble thinking of ideas, be resourceful. Ask people who know you well what they would say about you. If someone has written a letter of recommendation for you, re-read it. Which accomplishments listed on your résumé might interest the committee?

Don't simply repeat information that is already on your application form or in your résumé. Your essay should include specific incidents and concrete examples.

Don't use long words and obscure vocabulary simply to impress the committee; doing so will come across as artificial and showy.

Follow guidelines regarding such things as font size and essay length. Sometimes a typed essay is required; other times, you are required to hand-write it. Sometimes it should be on the application form; other times, it must be on a separate piece of paper. No matter how good your college admission essay is, failure to follow instructions will make a negative impression and may actually disqualify you.

The appearance of your essay is important. Spell all words correctly; follow grammar and punctuation rules; and keep your paper neat. The committee may not meet you personally; this essay may be the sole basis for their selection. A messy paper or an essay full of errors will cause them to see you as uncaring or unqualified, despite the inaccuracy of this judgment.

Save your essay! There is nothing wrong with using the same ideas-and occasionally even the same college admission essay-for several applications. Each time, make revisions so that the essay topic responds specifically to the question(s).

Although you have used it for other applications, the committee should not be able to tell that this essay wasn't originally written as a response to their question.

Academic performance remains the most important factor when it comes to college admissions, according to Goodman.

"The No. 1 thing that counts is academic performance. You have to keep up your academic standards," he says. "The rule of thumb is to take the most rigorous academic load possible without killing yourself."

Most consultants advise that an individual apply to between seven and 12 colleges.

"I suggest that a student put together a balanced list of institutions. This might be three of the most selective institutions or those that it would be a stretch for the student to get into," Bruce says. "Students should apply to three colleges where they have a good chance of being admitted, as well as three safe choices where they are fairly certain of getting in."

The essay remains an important part of any college application. According to Bruce, the best essays tell a story and give the admissions committee a better look at the applicant. "The essay is the opportunity to fill a hole. Look at your application and see what information about you might be missing," she says.

Homayoun recommends that, beginning in September, students devote two hours a day to working on their college applications. "If they set aside a block of time each day and keep to the schedule, they should be done with their applications by Thanksgiving," she says. "It also helps decrease the stress involved with the whole process."

When working with high-school students applying to college, Goodman stresses the need to develop good writing skills – and not just because of the admissions essay. "Some students say that they are going to major in biology or engineering and don't have to write well," he says. "I explain that good writing skills are necessary in all fields. For example, a biologist will need to concisely explain his work in a report that others can understand."

hether you’re just starting the college search for the first time, adding professional skills to your resumé, returning from military service, or just want to pursue new areas of study, it’s a daunting project to find the college that will best fit your situation.

Even if you don’t really know if college is for you, there are many sound reasons to consider a community college as a smart choice. Here are some facts about community colleges to consider as you plan this important next step.

Affordable Community colleges are considerably less expensive than four-year colleges and universities. Tuition at a community college can cost 30 percent of what one would pay at a public four-year college or university.

Tuition at a private residential college can cost more than ten times the tuition at a community college. Many students start more affordable undergraduate studies at a community college, then transfer credits to a four-year school and complete their degree. By attending a local community college, students can live at home and save on room and board for the first couple of

years. While attending a community college, students can also apply for financial aid, work-study programs and part-time job opportunities.

Flexible and Convenient Community colleges offer flexible schedules at convenient times for people who may have work or family responsibilities.

Many courses are available on weekends and evenings, and online courses provide 24/7 access. Students also have the option to attend on a part-time or full-time basis.

Certificate and Associates Degree Programs A variety of careers in technology, health care, service and the arts can begin with a two-year certificate or associates degree offered at community colleges. Certain specialized training programs, such as surgical technology, are available only at community colleges, like Nassau.

Accessible Community colleges are open-admission, which means that anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent can enroll.

Students with low GPAs or test scores preventing them from admission to four-year colleges can enroll in a community college and work to improve their academic record.

Admissions counselors at four-year institutions then place priority consideration on higher grades earned from the community college. Some students decide to get a head start on college and enroll for a few courses while still in high school.

Choices Community colleges offer academic transfer programs as well as vocational programs. Students can earn credit for core curriculum courses from a community college, at much less cost and in a better learning atmosphere than the same courses taken at a four-year institution. Most credits are accepted for transfer into many fouryear universities and count toward a bachelor’s degree. Students seeking careers in various fields, such as hospitality, nursing, criminal justice, fire science, office technology, paralegals, and paramedics can satisfy all their course requirements at a community college. hen attempting to gain acceptance to the college of their choice, teenagers quickly learn the admission requirements extend beyond their report cards.

Colleges weigh academics considerably, but many institutions of higher learning also want well-rounded students who will make great additions to the community as well as the classroom.

One of the things admissions boards look for in an applicant is his or her track record of volunteering.

Though students likely won't be denied admission if they have never volunteered, it never hurts to have volunteer work on a resume, and some students have even earned scholarship money thanks to their record of service.

Parents who want to help their child find the right volunteer opportunity should consider the child's hobbies and interests.

Oftentimes, a child's favorite hobby matches up perfectly with a volunteer opportunity.

When such a match is made, teenagers tend to look forward to their volunteer work and might even find a career path they'd like to follow.

The Athlete Students who love sports are likely to discover a host of volunteer opportunities at their disposal. The Special Olympics is a rewarding volunteer opportunity for adults and children alike. Relying heavily on volunteers, the Special Olympics needs volunteers to fill positions that include athlete escort, scorekeeper, cheerleader, and even fans.

Events occur 365 days a year, ensuring there is a local opportunity for every teen regardless of how hectic his or her schedule might be.

The Traveler Teenagers who love to travel can combine that passion with their desire to help the less fortunate. Many programs are designed for families who want to go on service-oriented vacations. For example, when signing up for such a program, a volunteer might visit a less fortunate country and help build and renovate existing structures. Global Citizens Network is one of many such programs, and families will work side-by-side with fellow volunteers as well members of the local community they're helping. Younger volunteers often find service-oriented vacations especially eye-

opening, providing a different perspective of the world they might otherwise never be able to witness or understand.

The Teacher Teenagers who enjoy teaching others might find a local coaching opportunity suits them best. Coaching doesn't have to be limited to sports, though grade-school aged children often look up to the local high school athletes and genuinely appreciate when such athletes take the time to work with them personally. Additional teachingbased volunteer opportunities include the local music program for the musically inclined teen or reading to younger kids through the local library's reading program.

The Builder Some teenagers are naturally inclined to building, and they might even be off to engineering school once they earn their high school diplomas. Before applying to the school of their choice, teenagers with a more mechanical inclination might find a volunteering opportunity such as Habitat for Humanity is the perfect fit. No previous building experience is required, and volunteers both young and old often find their time erecting homes for the less fortunate among the most rewarding moments of their lives.

When attempting to find the right volunteering opportunity for their child, parents should consider their kids' favorite hobbies and then find a volunteering opportunity that enables them to combine that passion with their desire to help others.

To evaluate the financial aid offer, consider both the aid package and what the college costs. It's quite possible that the most expensive school on your list might not cost you the most, depending on the package awarded by each school.

"Take your time to understand each item on your financial aid award letter so that you can compare award packages and determine which to accept," said Martha Holler, spokesperson for Sallie Mae, the college financial services company.

"Looking at the bottomline sticker price can be misleading. What's most important is the amount you will be expected to cover out of your own pocket."

Once you receive a school's award letter, review it carefully, and keep the following questions in mind: What are the enrollment requirements for grants and scholarships?

Is the award package for one year or all four years?

Can you maintain the required gradepoint average?

Is student employment part of the financial aid package?

If the package offers student loans, are you willing to make that financial commitment?

Once you and your family have answered these questions, the next step is to respond as quickly as possible to the school. If you fail to meet the deadline listed in the award letter, you risk having the money given to someone else.

Comparing Costs Compare all the financial aid packages offered from the various colleges that you receive award letters from. Pay special attention to the type of aid that is awarded and make your college decision based on each collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award package. You can decline to accept any or all of the aid that is offered. The U.S. Department of Education provides a simple worksheet to help you compare financial aid awards.

Dealing with a Gap Colleges will often admit students but not meet their financial need. This is called â&#x20AC;&#x153;gappingâ&#x20AC;?. When a college does this, they are basically saying that they need to meet their admissions quota, but arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t willing to offer you any incentive to attend. In some cases the gap can be huge. When a college does this, they are hoping you will decline their offer of admission. What should you do? Decline it! They obviously donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t value your contribution to their student body. Choose a college that is willing to give you substantial aid because they want you to attend.

Negotiations If you receive multiple awards you can use them to negotiate for additional aid.

Use the awards as a bargaining tool with colleges and attempt to negotiate more aid.

Effective note-taking makes a difference â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in high school and beyond

Professor Dennis Jertz of Seton Hall University has said that taking lecture notes effectively is one of the skills students must learn to make the transition from high school to college careers. Note-taking is also necessary in the business world, making it a worthwhile skill to learn.

Despite its importance in higher learning, not much study has gone into the correlation between note-taking and performance improvement. As a result, statistics supporting the importance of effective note-taking do not exist. But it stands to reason that the student who takes good notes, and studies well from them, has a sporting chance to improve his or her grades over others with poor notes.

Learning Note-Taking It may not seem as such, but note-taking can almost be a lesson all its own. If only students could enroll in Note-Taking 101.

Some elementary and high-school teachers attempt to teach strategies for taking notes, including developing outlines, but many students still struggle to maintain the essen-

tials as they move through school. It can be confusing knowing just how much to write down without creating a novel or having notes so scant that they provide little information when it comes time to study.

There are many systems of note-taking that a student can learn. These include using graphic representations to map out interconnected concepts. Outlines or charts can group terminology together with related ideas. There are other techniques that use cue words to trigger recollection of facts and dates. Mnemonic devices help recall information. Students can experiment with different methods until they find a system that works well and offers measurable success.

Improving Listening Skills No matter what method of note-taking is used, adequate listening skills are necessary to take effective notes. This helps students transfer what the professor is saying into ideas that can be put down on paper. Staring off into space or having your mind drift can cause a student to miss out on key parts of a

lecture. To improve note-taking skills, a student must first improve listening skills.

Sit up closer to the teacher or professor.

This enables eye-to-eye contact that may help a student focus. It may also trigger visual clues to a professor to gauge whether the class is catching on or missing what's being taught. It's also advantageous from a practical standpoint. It enables students to better hear what's going on. If the professor is garbled or inaudible when sitting far away, moving closer is essential, especially in a large lecture hall.

Remove distractions. When a student enters the classroom, he or she should be ready to learn. That means silencing mobile devices and gearing the mind toward the lessons. Not every lecture will be exhilarating, so students should make a conscious effort to pay attention. Limiting distractions can help.

Keys to Note-Taking Once listening skills have improved, students can go onto to other note-taking pointers.

Sequencing material is important, so notes should be dated and numbered. If references are made to chapters that correlate to the textbook, jot those down so they can strengthen the notes.

Students should consider writing notes on one side of the page so that they can each be laid out side-by-side. Looseleaf paper works well, or notes can be typed and printed out.

Students should develop their own method of abbreviations and symbols to cut down on the amount of writing needed.

Notes needn't be in full sentences; phrases are equally effective.

College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year.

Road trips may be necessary, and several at that. The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls.

Families should have a strategy for visiting college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Consider these tips from Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning.

Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasn't done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sports, extracurriculars, campus/enrollment size, dorm life, religious affiliations, academic strengths and offerings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are important to them and use those criteria.

Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your child's academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down to a realistic number of colleges to visit.

Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to

unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from teachers or tutors with expertise in these tests. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing double-digit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once,â&#x20AC;? says Bavaria.

Go while college is in session. Summers and holidays can be dead zones for college life, which won't give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience.

Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question everyone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like financial aid and safety. You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

January: Start filling out your FAFSA aid form.

After January 1, you and your parents/guardians can submit your information. Check with your colleges to see if they require any additional forms.

March: Review your SAR (Student Aid Report), a report of all the data submitted through your FAFSA, for accuracy. Be sure to update any current tax information.

April: Watch the mail for your acceptance and financial aid award letters. Compare your award letters, and then choose the best option for you and your family. Remember that college scholarships and grants are free money, while college loans have to be paid back.

May: Sign and return your financial aid award letter. Don't forget to decline the award letters from the colleges and universities that you will not be attending. If your award does not cover all your costs, you may need to apply for an educational loan through your local bank.

lthough many colleges and universities have heavy price tags these days, don't let that discourage you from applying. There are many financial aid options out there for college freshmen - from grants and scholarships to parent and student loans - that can help lower tuition costs and make college more affordable.

How much financial aid you need will depend on a variety of factors. If you are planning on living at home and attending a state university or a community college, you will probably not need as much assistance as you would living away from home at a private institution. So, in order to sort out your options, here's your first college lesson: Tips on Financing Your College Education.

Juniors: It's never too late to save! Even if you only save enough for books, your after-schooljob money will give you a head start. Also, you should attend financial aid information nights at your high school and top college choices.

Choose after school and summer activities wisely

ow can you help guide your children to the most enriching after-school activities? It helps first of all to think about the options.

Sometimes the choice for an appropriate outside activity comes from your own goals for your child. For example, if you want to use time after school to fill a gap in what is offered by the school, you might consider music lessons. If your child is struggling in a particular subject, tutoring might be a good idea. If your child needs to burn off energy or needs to be more physically active, you might want to look into an activity such as karate.

But the after-school activities that are the most fun for children usually emerge from their own interests. Be careful about urging your child toward some interest that you harbor or letting them bend to peer pressure. “Ask yourself whether your child really loves this activity,” advises social psychologist Susan Newman, author of “Little Things Long Remembered: Making Your Children Feel Special Every Day” and “The Book of No: 250 Ways To Say It–and Mean It–and Stop People-Pleasing Forever.” “If the activity is not something the child is

even moderately good at, it can have a negative effect on his self-perception.”

So listen to your child. Look in particular for persistent expressions of interest rather than something a child mentions once or twice. Figure out what sparked the interest.

Was it a friend? Was it seeing the activity?

Then ask yourself whether your child is physically old enough for the activity or what the benefits will be.

If a child doesn’t express a particular interest vocally, look for other clues.“We know our children better than anyone else,” says Newman. “As a parent, you have some [indication] of what your child might be interested in or where his strong suits are.” For example, for a child who is always doodling, you might suggest art lessons. For a child who keeps trying to reach the basketball hoop, mention the basketball team. For the child who loves to argue, propose debate.

For the child who wants to be involved in multiple activities, force him to prioritize.

Or if your child jumps into activities and

then quits, allow such experimenting but don’t invest in the necessary equipment right away. For example, if your child decides she wants horseback riding or guitar lessons, borrow or rent or buy used items until you see a deep commitment.

And for the child who resists involvement in any activities at all, don’t push too hard. “Some children are loners and quite content being by themselves,” says Newman.“Pushing your child to get out and do something is going to make him miserable. Just keep suggesting possibilities.”

Activities and College Admission Whatever you choose, don’t overdo it.

“What’s happened today is that parenting has become this competitive sport and the trophy is to get your child into a good college,” Newman says. “To that end, children are overscheduled and they have absolutely no down time. For some children, this works fine, but for the majority, the pressure is

intense and they’re exhausted and their academics suffer. In going for the top college prize, parents erroneously think the more activities, the better their child will look on applications, and that’s not what colleges are looking at anymore, if they ever were.”

A single, lasting commitment to one activity is more impressive, she says. And activities that detract from academic performance will end up hurting the child’s chances later on. wAnother activity – and one that’s free – is to let your child volunteer at a local agency. Usually, child volunteers must be at least middle school age. Organized volunteer programs can be fun and enlightening for children while helping them develop a commitment to community service.
