publishers 2017-2018

Hello, residents! We are proud to present our annual East Meadow Guide, a special supplement to the East Meadow Herald. Those of us who live here know that East Meadow is a wonderful place. In this compact book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide to East Meadow ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the East Meadow Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results.

living in East Meadow In the middle of Nassau County lies a hamlet, rich with diversity, parks, organizations and family-owned businesses. It thrives with the help of community leaders and key members who ensure that children, veterans and families’ needs and rights are met. According to the census, 38,000 people — 12 percent Hispanic or Latino, 12 percent Asian, 5 percent African-American, and 70 percent white — call the small, yet humble hamlet home: East Meadow. SchoolS and library The East Meadow community has one public school district, comprised of two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Salisbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools, Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools. The elementary level sees students from kindergarten — the

first full-kindergarten year started in 2015 — through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade. The district welcomed a new superintendent to lead the 2017-18 school year, Dr. Kenneth Card Jr., a Navy veteran and 15-year administrator. The district appointed Card after a year-long search for a new leader. The East Meadow PTA Council, a coalition of school PTAs, is led by President Robin Fitzpatrick. East Meadow is also home to three parochial schools and eight nursery schools. The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection. After the community approved a historic, first-time school and library joint bond in March 2017, the library’s approved $14.6 million is slated for infrastructure upgrades, a new all-purpose room/theater, and an outdoor reading garden to accommodate patrons. Each year,

it hosts EMcon — perhaps its largest event — an anime festival that draws thousands from across Long Island. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn. The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has roughly 260 volunteers. It is led by four commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Its current chief is John McGee. Parks and recreation Parks are a big part of the East Meadow community, and none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletic fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three 18-hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails. Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a 50-meter pool. Built in 1998, the swimming facility hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions. It is also open to the public. The Twin Rinks Ice Center opened to the public in the summer of 2014, adjacent to the Aquatic Center. It’s an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center. Other parks in East Meadow include the Town of Hempstead-operated Edward J. Speno Memorial Park on East Meadow Avenue, named after Edward Speno, who was the first president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce in 1954.

Page 9

Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue, which the Town of Hempstead also runs, is the home of a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool, on East Meadow Avenue, sits East Meadow Town Square, designed and built by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. Veterans Park is home to an 1,800-pound marble statue, a steel beam from the World Trade Center and a commemorative footstone listing the names of East Meadow residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was installed by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club. community GrouPs The community boasts active and diverse community organizations, including the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, the Pope Pius XII Knights of Columbus Council 4422, Knights of Pythias East Meadow Lodge 774 Alliance, and the Community Association of Stewart Avenue. The groups organize the community’s largest annual events, including the Memorial Day parade, Community Pride Day, Culinary Delights and Christmas tree and menorah lightings in the winter. Veterans groups include American Legion Post 1082, Jewish War Veterans Post 709, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736. Churches, synagogues and mosques of all different faiths can be found throughout East Meadow, and seniors find a home at the Salisbury/East Meadow Senior Center.

Out and About

Unlike many other areas in Nassau County, East Meadow boasts several parks, open spaces and quiet places for families to enjoy the outdoors. Not far from East Meadow, there are many other parks and recreational facilities in Merrick, Westbury and Bellmore, not to mention the crown jewel of New York State Parks, Jones Beach. East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park is 930 acres, larger than Manhattan’s Central Park. Eisenhower includes the Harry Chapman Lakeside Theatre, where the county arranges the annual Summer Music Concert Series. The theater also hosts summer movie screenings, concerts for several organizations and services for veterans and their families. Another jewel in East Meadow is Speno Memorial Park, which has numerous facilities for fun, including basketball, handball, shuffleboard and tennis courts, a playground, a vita course and multi-purpose fields. Jones Beach, just 15 minutes south, has 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand ocean beach, with food, leisure activities and a superb nature center. See the list on this page of all the local and nearby places to enjoy the outdoors.

LIBRARIES

East MEadow Public library

The East Meadow Public Library does more than just hold books. Its programs and special events for all ages, art exhibits, reference service, magazines, college catalogs, civil-service tests, eBooks, iPads and more draw thousands of participants from across Nassau County. Located in the heart of East Meadow on East Meadow Avenue and Front Street, it’s accessibility allows passersby to stop in for a book or program. Throughout its time in the community, the library has been able to meet its patrons’ needs. To enhance its services, the library will undergo major renovations next year — for the first time since the early 1980s — after the community passed a $14.6 million bond in March. Additions will include a new community reading area and an all-purpose room that will host an array of events such as concerts and guest author readings. The Library Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. To find out more about the library or its scheduled programming, visit the library’s website at www.eastmeadow.info.

the Senior Life in The Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment provides an array of services for seniors across Nassau County, including recreational programs and centers. The East Meadow Senior Center had provided services to its members for more than 25 years before the Town of Hempstead announced its closing in December 2016. The center soon found a new home when it merged with the Salisbury location in January. It now forms the Salisbury/East Meadow Senior Center. The joint center meets at the Salisbury center on 460 Salisbury Park Drive, and it caters to more than 100 members and hosts programs for veterans, students and the community.

Questions we’ve been asked...

COM F O R T KE E PE R S ® O F O CE AN S I D E

Is there a fee charged for making funeral pre-arrangements?

There is absolutely no fee or other charge in New York State when you make “pre-arrangements”. Moreover when you pre-fund those arrangements through the Pre-Plan Trust there is no additional expense in establishing the trust account. A trust account that remains under your control and your funds are FDIC insured. No commission, no set-up fees, no extra expenses. Just accurate, helpful information, and a plan that conforms to all New York State Regulations and SSIMedicaid regulations as well. An enhanced rate of interest on the Pre-Plan Trust enables us to guarantee the funeral home costs when a complete funeral is arranged and paid for. If you would like to discuss these issues, call us and we’ll arrange to have one of our licensed funeral director professionals meet with you and answer your questions. You’ll receive clear answers, and itemized list of the costs, and some peace of mind. Thomas L. Kearns

Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor, currently Republican Anthony Santino, and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
