We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide East Meadow ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the East Meadow Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Clifford Richner Publisher

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Dear East Meadow Residents: Chamber of Commerce is very beneficial to a community. East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is an organization made up of local businesses, individuals and professionals working together to improve their community. The Chamber helps to develop and maintain business relationships within the community and acts as a liaison between local businesses and the various levels of government. This voluntary organization invests their time and money in helping to develop programs that will make the community a better place to live and work. We hold regular monthly meetings, which are generally the first Wednesday of the month. These gatherings help inform businesses about new programs and provide a good means of networking. We sponsor grand openings and/or ribbon cutting celebrations for all new chamber businesses. During the year the Chamber has hosted summer concerts, Memorial Day parades, Holiday Lighting ceremonies, networking events, a fishing trip and a program to shop locally and much more. We have also created with the help of our Past Presidents and State and local officials East Meadow Town Square at Town of Hempstead Veteran’s Memorial Park, which has since become a focal point of the community. Town Square has become a gathering place for East Meadow residents to enjoy. On September 30th the Chamber will be holding its 11th annual Culinary Delights Event. This is not only about the Chamber but you as a resident. Please take a moment and review the list of our Chamber members and shop locally. We need your help and support to keep these businesses here within East Meadow and to be able to accomplish our goals. These businesses depend on you. For more information and to get involved, please call the Chamber office at 516794-3727 or visit our website at www.eastmeadowchamber.com, Buy with confidence shop locally. DOLORES V. ROME President

The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce has been promoting businesses in the East Meadow area for over 50 years. LIVING IN EAST MEADOW East Meadow, a hamlet in Nassau County, lies within the Town of Hempstead, which is led by Supervisor Kate Murray. According to the 2010 census, East Meadow has a population of 38,132 people living in 12,452 housing units. It is 77 percent white, 5 percent African-American and 11 percent Asian. About 79 percent of the population is 18 and older. The East Meadow community has one public school district, boasting two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Westbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke High School, Woodland and W.T. Clarke Middle School, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway Elementary Schools. The elementary level sees students from kindergarten through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade. The elementary and middle school districts will all be taking extra steps next year, including a line item study of the 20122013 assessment results, to prepare their staff and students for the new Common Core Standards that the New York State Education Department recently implemented. The schools have welcomed new technologies in recent years, and superintendant Louis DeAngelo said it is his goal to soon have Smart Boards in every classroom. For the 20132014 school year, the district will introduce Smart Tables in its elementary schools, which is a play table equipped with a computerized screen, allowing for educational children’s games. East Meadow also comprises three parochial schools and eight nursery schools. The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection, and is also working to incorporate new technologies. From November 2012 to February 2013, it was one of just 10 libraries in the country to host Discover Earth, a traveling exhibit comprising large touch-screen computers that allowed patrons to learn about our planet in a fun, interactive way. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn. The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has approximately 200 volunteers. It is led by five commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Parks are a big part of the East Meadow Community, and none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletics fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three eighteen-hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails. Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a 50-meter pool that is 68 meters long. Built in 1998, the swimming facility has hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions and is also open to the public. In the fall of 2013, The Twin Rinks Ice Center is expected to open adjacent to the Aquatic Center, an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center. Other parks in East Meadow include the Town of

Graduates of W.T. Clarke High School, from left, Gino Gentilini-Pagonis, Toby Klein, Alex Fanelli and Wesley Halstead, returned to the school in January for an improvisational comedy show to benefit Clarke’s Theater Arts Parents Association. Hempstead-operated Edward J. Speno Memorial Park on East Meadow Avenue, named after Edward Speno, who was the first president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce in 1954. Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue, also Town of Hempstead operated, is the home of a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool, at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue, sits East Meadow Town Square, designed and built by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. The Nassau University Medical Center, on Hempstead Turnpike, is the tallest building in Nassau County, and can be seen from nearly anywhere in East Meadow. What began in 1935 as Meadowbrook Hospital with just 200 beds, has evolved into a 1,200-bed healthcare system with an integrated system of special services. The Nassau County Correctional Center, operated by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department is on Carman Avenue. The department works to provide a safe and secure environment for the staff and inmates, while providing for the care, custody, and control of detainees and prisoners committed to its custody. The community boasts very active and diverse community organizations, including the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations (CEMCO), the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, the Pope Pius XII Knights of Columbus Council 4422, Knights of Pythias East Meadow Lodge 774 Alliance, the East Meadow Lions Club and the Sons of Italy Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568. The groups organize the community’s biggest annual events, including the Memorial Day parade, Community Pride Day, Culinary Delights and Christmas tree and menorah lightings in the winter. Veteran groups include American Legion Post 1082, Jewish War Veterans Post 709, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736. Churches and synagogues of all different faiths can be found throughout East Meadow, and several senior homes are also spread throughout the community.

HISTORY By AMY SCHOENBERGER The history of East Meadow is long and storied, dating back to the 17th century. In 1643, a small group of colonists from Connecticut decided to cross Long Island Sound and create a new settlement on Long Island. They purchased land from Native Americans and named it Hempstead Town, after their birthplace in England. One year later, Governor Kieft gave them a patent, and the colonists claimed the land as their own. In 1655, surveyor Thomas Langdon reported at a Hempstead Town meeting that the “east meadow” was suitable for grazing. Cattle and sheep would graze there for years and were East Meadow’s primary residents in its early days. The sheep supplied much of the colony’s wool. On the last Monday in October, the sheep would be driven to East Meadow’s public pen from all sections of the Hempstead Plains. They were identified with certain marks on their ears and sent home with farmers. Unmarked sheep were auctioned off. The day became something of a celebration as soon merchants, acrobats, clowns and politicians began attending. It eventually became an annual holiday called Parting Day. In 1665, a horse track was established in the Salisbury area, attracting many people to East Meadow. Many racetracks came and went on the plains during this time, but the Salisbury horse track was among the most famous. In May 1750, a major road was built through East Meadow. Jerusalem Road was laid out from Hempstead to Jerusalem. Newbridge Avenue was made an official highway in 1755, and it ran from Jericho Turnpike to Newbridge Neck on the South Shore. Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the more noteworthy people to call East Meadow home, lived on Newbridge Avenue as a child many years before she became the First Lady of the United States. Prospect Avenue was called Hay-

Shane Molinari/Herald

More than 550 participants came out for the 5th Annual Run with the Rams 5K race at W.T. Clarke High School in Westbury on April 27. carter’s Lane because it was a winding path leading to the Haying Fields. Merrick Avenue was originally called Barnum Avenue, and Hempstead Turnpike was originally a toll road. Peter and Sarah Barnum also did much for the community. They owned 2,000 acres of land, which Sarah inherited from her father. In an area of many farms and estates, the Barnums owned the most land. They supported more than 100 seasonal workers in addition to their regular help. Adding to their land, they also purchased other small farms around Long Island. In 1849, John Noon bought an inn at Prospect and Newbridge avenues. He named it the Wells-Fargo Hotel, and it was very prosperous and well known. The Meadow Brook Hunt Club was established in 1877 by a group of sportsmen who brought a pack of hounds from Ireland. They leased an old farmhouse near Merrick Avenue and enjoyed their sporting activity for many years as a club. That area was turned into the Meadow Brook Golf Course at the turn of the century, a time when golf was becoming a popular sport in East Meadow. East Meadow faced one of its worse calamities when the blizzard of 1888 struck. Roads were impossible to travel on, and snow went up to

second-story windows. The blizzard lasted from March 12 until April 2. The first school in East Meadow was a one-room schoolhouse at Front Street and Newbridge Avenue. It soon proved to be overcrowded, so East Meadow Hall was established at the turn of the century, which was a tworoom schoolhouse right next to the post office. In 1922, the school was said to be overflowing with pupils, and East Meadow established another school on Newbridge Road, called the Newbridge Road School. In 1950, overcrowding became a problem again, and the Prospect Avenue Elementary School was established. By 1955, East Meadow High School was established, headed by principal Edward J. McCleary. Two years later, the first senior class graduated from East Meadow High School. After World War I, East Meadow became large enough to start running public buses to and from Hempstead. After World War II, East Meadow’s population skyrocketed — increasing by 376 percent. In 1951, there were 25,000 residents living there, and that number more than doubled within the next six years. Veterans Memorial Park was established in April 1963 as the first park and pool in East Meadow.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication.
