CAREY Size should matter for Seahawkss

arey made a memorable run to the Nassau Class A Final Four in 2013-14, knocking off top-seeded Lawrence in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual county champion Valley Stream South in the semifinals. The Seahawks will rely on their size and athleticism as they prepare to battle South Side, Manhasset, Plainedge, New Hyde Park, and Great Neck North in Conference A-I. Head coach Marty Kelly believes him team can become one that’s tough to beat. “If we can shoot the ball well, handle pressure, and stay healthy, we’ll be dangerous,” Kelly said. “This is the biggest team I have ever had, so teams will have trouble matching up with us. We’ve got some very good athletes. With a lot of the players just finishing up with football, it will take a little time for us to hit our stride.” Junior Mike Catanese will handle point guard responsibilities. Catanese, who emerged as an outstanding defender as a sophomore, came on strong late in the year and figures to be a more complete player this season. Kelly likes Catanese’s court sense, ball handling ability, and mid-range game. Junior Anthony Millan joins Catanese in the backcourt. Millan is extremely athletic and finishes well when taking it to the rack. Juniors Sean Engel and Jake Safuto will both contribute at guard for the Seahawks. Senior forward Kieran Murchie, a three-year varsity player, has improved his shooting and should put up some solid numbers. Senior Tom Gallant is a rebounding machine at both ends of the 10 — December 18, 2014

floor. With an improved offensive game, Gallant should be tough on opposing forwards. Eddie Cosgrove, a 6-foot-6 senior shoots well, sees the floor, and has a knack for finding open teammates. Kelly has a slew of big bodies who’ll give him minutes. Joe Nicoletti, Luke Spano, John Heyer, Richie Katz, and Anthony Catapano will all see time in the frontcourt for Carey. The Seahawks will prepare for conference foes by taking on Hempstead, Chaminade, Holy Trinity, and St. Anthony in non-league play.

Playoffs on minds of Lady Seahawks Carey had a breakthrough season that resulted in the Lady Seahawks earning a playoff berth for the first time in ages. With their leading scorer back, along with the core of a team that registered 12 wins in 2013-14, they have their sights set on returning to the postseason. t, Carey will face Manhasset, Plainedge, South Side, New Hyde Park, and Great Neck North in league play. Head coach Theresa Schmidtt hopes her veteran players will lead the way. “We’re not very deep, so we’re going to need those who are returning to step up a little more,” Schmidt said. “We need the core of the team to be our strength, and for the youngerr girls to develop some confio dence. We’d like to get back to the playoffs.” Victoria Porcasi, a threetime, All-County honoree, will be the player other teams look to shut down. Porcasi has the whole package. larke’s gotten off on the right foot—make that feet for the twofooted leapers—with new head coach Dan Reece on the basketball court, showing not only energy, but a willingness to learn as he looks to install his system. “So far, so good,” Reece said. “It’s been positive and they’re a great group of kids and very coachable. They’re all working hard and responding well to the coaching.” The Rams will be throwing out plenty of different looks on offense, and it starts in the backcourt, where senior John Zaino returns at one of the guard spots. The starting quarterback on the football team, his leadership translates well to the hardwood. Able to create off the dribble, Zaino’s athleticism is an asset, and he stands to be one of Clarke’s top offensive weapons, along with junior guard Jason Ferrara. While Zaino’s strength lies in getting to the hoop, Ferrara can fill the nets from the perimeter. And when it comes to distributing on offense and locking down on defense, that’s where junior guard Jason Ferrara figures into the backcourt mix. EAST MEADOW Seniors lead charge for Jets

ast Meadow hits the hardwood looking to make a habit out of qualifying for the playoffs. The Jets, coming off a topfour finish in Conference AA-II and a playoff berth, return a key core of players to a roster that includes six seniors. “The last time we were a senior-laden team we were excellent,” head coach Barry Dickson said. “We’re hoping for the same thing [this season].” Senior Joe Forrler, a twotime All-Conference player, returns at forward with an even more versatile game. Already a strong scorer and rebounder who can knock down elbow jumpers with ease, Forrler has taken a step back with his shooting—and added a three-pointer to his arsenal. “He’s improved his outside game and can make a three,” Dickson said of Forrler, who gives defenders something else to think about, even if he only shoots a handful. “He’s a tough, strong kid.” Senior Brendan Callaghan is back as a shooting guard/ small forward and remains a key component in East Meadow’s up-tempo offense. An athletic slasher with great leaping ability, Callaghan presents problems for defenses not only in the paint but around the rim. While senior Ryan Bergmann can shoot, he’ll be asked to distribute from the point, as Dickson looks to take advantage of his strong decision-making and low turnover rate. Senior Kenooshan Joseph started a few games last season and returns to the backcourt, while J.R. Howell is in the mix for playing time and is the only sophomore on the

roster. Junior Joe Minucci is back and has a jumper that can help spread the floor. Joining Forrler, a cocaptain along with senior forward Alex Berger, up front is 6-foot-5 junior Austin Birnbaum and 6-4 junior Tom Zitzman giving the Jets not only size up front on offense, but a group of big men that stand to play key roles in presses and traps. “We’re going to push the ball offensively,” Dickson said. “We hope to pressure more than we have in the past [defensively] since we’ll be playing more guys.”

Lady Jets ready to run the floor The Lady Jets may look young on paper, but they pack plenty of athletic punch on the court and are out to surprise more than a few people after winning just one game last season. “We have high hopes for this group,” second-year head coach Pete Olenik said. “They’re fun to coach, fun to be around. There’s a contagious enthusiasm about this group, and the junior varsity’s included.” Junior co-captains Gabby Heim and Crista San Antonio o comprise not only the starting backcourt but also the team’s leaders. Coming back from an injury that shelved her last season, Heim is ready to run the point where her excellent court vision and passing ability are going to be the fuel that drives the offense. “When you look at her play, she just has a feel for the game,” Olenik said of Heim. “That’s the mark of a good point guard. Good point guards make their teammates better.” San Antonio, meanwhile, is a dead-on shooter who can

EAST ROCKAWAY Rocks k to roll at fast pace

ast Rockaway enjoyed a strong finish after a rough 0-6 start last season, registering seven wins overall and giving eventual Nassau Class B champion Wheatley all it could handle in a triple overtime semifinal playoff loss. The Rocks will try to play at a fast pace to overcome a height disadvantage, head coach Joe Lores said. “We’ve only got one or two guys over 6-foot, so we’re going to turn up the tempo and see what we can do in the open floor,” he said. “We need to find ways to rebound, and we’ve got a lot of work to do defensively.” Bringing back an experienced point guard like junior Danny Fusco will help East Rockaway’s cause against Conference B rivals Carle Place, Cold Spring Harbor, Malverne, Oyster Bay, and Wheatley. Fusco earned All-Conference honors last season after averaging 14 points per game. “I’m very happy with the way his game has evolved,” Lores said. “He 1does things you can’t teach. He’s aggressive to the basket and he’s got a nice pull-up jumper.” Dominick DeRosa is looking to pick up where he left off—posting 15 points and seven steals in the playoff defeat. His season will be delayed until he recovers from mono, but once the senior forward is ready he’ll provide offense and rebounding, Lores said. Stepping into a starting role, senior guard Chris Amabile gives the Rocks plenty of defensive energy and chip in a few baskets. Junior Mike DelGais, the quarterback of the football team, is a quick and athletic guard with scoring ability. Sky Mosley will

contribute as a freshman. East Rockaway’s frontcourt took a hit during camp when senior Brian Murphy suffered a knee injury. Up front with DeRosa are seniors Noah Ingenito, Jack Cussen and Mike Lopez. At 6-foot-2, Cussen is the team’s tallest player, and Lores is counting on him to rebound and defend. “Nobody’s shaking in their boots to play us, but maybe that’ll work to our advantage,” Lores said. “I think we can surprise.”

Experience a key for Lady Rocks Returning the majority of last year’s playoff team has head coach Karin Leary optimistic the Lady Rocks will be competitive and get back to the Class B postseason tournament. “We’re athletic and deep,” Leary said. “Getting back to the playoffs is a goal. The addition of Cold Spring Harbor, which made the finals in Class A, makes it a tougher road but I think we can have a good season.” Though only 10 names scomprise the roster, most posdsess varsity experience. Leading the way is senior Kim n McCann, who led the team in scoring and rebounding last g season on the way to earning All-Class honors. The 5-foot10 forward recently helped the Lady Rocks volleyball team to a county championship. “She’s a leader and has a lot of responsibility,” Leary said. “She can score and battles for rebounds.” With McCann and sophomore 6-1 center Alessia Drevnyak operating in the paint, the Lady Rocks figure to have an advantage against most opponents. Drevnyak was slowed by injury early last season but put together a huge second half, averaging

ELMONT Spartans will be fun to watch

raduation was tough on the Spartans, a team that advanced to the Nassau Class AA boys’ basketball semifinals before falling to Uniondale. Elmont, the defending Conference AA-III champions, should still be among the teams to beat in a league comprising Mepham, Calhoun, Herricks, Long Beach, MacArthur, and Westbury. As usual, the Spartans will play a challenging non-league schedule. Among those Elmont will be taking on are St. Anthony, Chaminade, Mount St. Michael, and Central Islip. With a very athletic roster, the Spartans should be entertaining. Head coach George Holub likes the makeup of his team. “This is going to be a fun team for people to watch,” Holub said. “We’re very young, and, to be honest, I don’t really know what to expect. We may have the best shooting team I’ve ever had, so we’re a little different from past years. We’re going to run all the time, and apply a lot of pressure. Everything is going to depend on how we jell as a team. I really like this group.” Matt Graham has been primarily a shooter the past few seasons. He will need to step into a role that includes more ball-handling and distributing as a senior. Junior Yasir Lawrence is likely the best perimeter shooter on the team. He takes over the role that Graham occupied. Junior Travis RobinsonMorgan is a talented shooter, who handles the ball well, and plays solid defense. Fearless freshman point guard Victor Olawoye is incredibly quick, has a good handle, and shoots well from the field. Chaizam Kwankwo is a matchup nightmare for oppo18 — December 18, 2014

nents. Kwankwo, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, is solidly built, can take it to the rack, and has an improved jumper. Freshman KC Ndefo is freakishly athletic. When Ndefo gets out on the break, watch out. Ndefo is also a talented shot blocker. Elmont has a defensive gem in 6-foot-7 center Pauly Paulicap. While Paulicap is somewhat raw on the offensive end, he’s a shot-blocking machine in the paint.

Positive outlook for Lady Spartans The Elmont girls made some strides toward returning to prominence in 2013-14, and it looks as if that trend will continue. The Lady Spartans have a talented roster that will mix it up with the likes of Mepham, Calhoun, Herricks, Long Beach, MacArthur, and Westbury in AA-III play. Tom Magno, in his eighth season as head coach at Elmont, knows it will take time for his team to jell. “We have a mix of seniors with experience, and young players who are playing at this level for the first time,” Magno said. “While the young kids have played a lot of basketball, we haven’t done it as a team, so the chemistry will take some time to build. We take it a day at a time, and the goals change as we go along. But, I’d like to think that we’ll be in the mix for the top of the conference.” Monique Joseph, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding as a junior, can play just about anywhere on the floor. The three-year varsity player, an All-Conference honoree in 2013-14, is a slasher who does a great job on the glass on both ends of the court. Noelle Dixon, a 6-foot-1

d senior, has improved considerably. She’s a strong rebounder, who ho passes the ball well, and has become more re aggressive on the offensive end. Juniorr Ashante Rhodes is a banger who will givee the team a physical presence off the bench. Freshman Kem Nwabadu, who scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in an opening night win over Carey, is a 5-10 power forward with tremendous upside. Her mid-range game is impressive. FREEPORT Tough slate awaits Red Devils

reeport graduated all five starters from a team that was knocked off by Baldwin in the quarterfinals of the Class AA boys’ basketball playoff tournament last February. The Red Devils earned a berth in the quarters with a victory over Long Beach, a win that marked the 400th career victory for long-time head coach Bob DeBonis. Freeport won’t have any easy nights in Nassau Conference AA-I, a conference comprising defending county champion Farmingdale, Hempstead, Massapequa, Hempstead, and Syosset. Despite a dearth of varsity experience, DeBonis likes what he’s seeing from his team in the early going. “I like the commitment and hard work we’re seeing from the guys,” DeBonis said. “I’m cautiously optimistic. Until you start playing games, you never know for sure how you’re going to do. We want to be one of the top four teams, and make the playoffs. Terkins, who is also 6-4, is a physical player who should be able to pick up a slew of garbage points. Senior Stafford Nicholas may be the team’s best defensive player. Nicholas can play just about every position on the court, and possesses excellent basketball IQ. Running the point for the Red Devils will be 5-5 junior Willie Tencie. Lady Devils looking to run A year removed from a trip to the Nassau Class AA semifinals, which resulted in a loss to eventual Long Island champion Baldwin, Freeport will look to make some noise in Conference AA-I. The Lady Devils will tangle with perennial power Massapequa, Syosset, Farmingdale, Uniondale, and Hempstead. The top four teams will earn a playoff berth. Freeport must replace the production of Taylor Miller, the team’s leading scorer and Conference Player of thee Year. Head coach Meredith Jones is optimistic. “We’re not very experienced, but we’re fast and athletic,” Jones said. “Our chemistry iss growing, and we’re starting to jell. We’re going to look to run a lot, and take advantage of our speed.” AJ Smith, an All-County honoree in 2013-14, will be Freeport’s top scoring threat.. The 6-foot senior, who has always been tough from the perimeter, has developed into a more complete player. Smith has improved her play in the post, and looks to drive the basket more often than she has in the past. Smith will create matchup advantages. Sophomore Maya Thomas takes over at the point for

the Lady Devils. Thomas sees the floor well, has good instincts, and defends well. Senior guard Janique Lewis forms th an excellent tandem with Thomas. Jones calls Lewis wis the quickest player she has ever coached. Megan Clowser, a 6-foot foot derable senior, has made considerable improvement. HEWLETT Bulldogs feed off finals appearance

ewlett broke through to the Nassau Class A finals last season after knocking on the door for quite some time under head coach Bill Dubin, who has guided the Bulldogs to nine consecutive playoff appearances. “It was a special experience and took a total team effort,” Dubin said of last winter’s postseason run that ended with a hard-fought loss to Valley Stream South in the county championship game. “The only thing the kids cared about was the end result,” he added. “The two key ingredients were they worked hard and had fun.” A balanced scoring attack is something Dubin is anticipating following the graduation of two-time All-County selection Avery Feldman, a 1,000-point scorer for his career. “We’re going to share the scoring,” he said. “We’ll play multiple defenses, which we’ve always been good at.” Hewlett returns four contributors, including senior Joe Pasquale at center. The 6-foot-5 Pasquale was instrumental in playoff wins over West Hempstead and Floral Park. “Joe’s going to be a matchup advantage for us,” Dubin said. “He’s got a huge wingspan and plays well with his back to the basket. He’s a big shot-blocker and shoots a quick turnaround jumper.” Seniors Messiah Clark and Bar Itzhak are additional frontcourt players with experience. Clark started a handful of games last season and also brought instant energy off the bench. “He can hit shots from mid-range and also get to the basket with his dribbling ability,” Dubin said. “He also rebounds and defends well.” Itzhak comes off a big volleyball campaign 22 — December 18, 2014

and brings great leaping ability to the hardwood. Juniors Troy Feeney and Aaron Kadosh will also contribute. At guard, senior Ryan Steinberg is someone who can get hot and score in bunches as he proved in last year’s playoffs. “He’s probably our best all-around scorer,” said Dubin, who noted freshman Luca Preziosi is the likely starting point guard, and freshman Kendall Ogilvie will see time up front. In the new county alignment, the Bulldogs compete in Conference A-III along with Bethpage, Division, Floral Park, Glen Cove, and Roslyn.

Depth a key for Lady Bulldogs Improved offense and depth are two things head coach Frank Viggiano is counting on for the Lady Bulldogs to compete against a strong group of new conference rivals. “We’re definitely deeper and have the ability to score more,” he said. “We’re going to press and run and see where it takes us. The confer-ence is going to be a challenge. Every team on paper looks like a playoff team.” Hewlett, which reached the playoffs in the 2012-13 campaign, registered four conference victories last season. “We played much better towards the end,” said Viggiano, who has seven non-league games in place to prepare the Lady Bulldogs for the 10-game conference slate beginning in January. The roster runs 13-deep, Viggiano said, and features an interesting mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen. “We have seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen, and even an eighth-grader,” he said. KENNEDY Cougars aiming for playoff berth

ennedy barely missed out on the Nassau Class A playoffs last season, falling just one game shy of grabbing the final berth from Conference A-1. But the return of seven players from that team certainly gives the Cougars a leg up when it comes to keeping things on the winning track. They welcome back some size with senior center Jake Silverman, who stands 6-foot3, and senior forward Josh Wexler (6-2) anchoring the frontcourt. On top of providing some muscle around the basket, the hope is for Wexler to stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting, noted head coach Rory Block. Wexler shot 43 percent from behind the arc last season and is expected to provide consistent scoring punch. Senior Eric Pauly, a returning All-Conference power forward, is back after averaging more than five rebounds per game and remains an integral part of the Kennedy lineup on both ends of the floor. Kennedy has considerable depth and a number of big bodies up front with senior Jared Nossen and junior Joe Condello, a first-year varsity player, teaming with senior Joe Defelice, a small forward with long-range shooting touch. Jordan Finkel, an energetic forward, is also in the mix for playing time at small forward, and like junior Jason Teich makes things happen with hustle plays. There will be some early season shuffling in the backcourt, as Kennedy awaits the return of junior Mikey Schwartz from injury. Schwartz turned in a strong second half as a sophomore, and gives the Cougars a heady playmaker with shooting 24 — December 18, 2014

touch on the perimeter. In his absence, juniors James Ferry and Harrison Marcus, both strong ball handlers, will be called on by Block to shoulder the playmaking duties. At shooting guard, senior Zach Eisner, a returning varsity player, and junior Josh Schuit, a varsity newcomer, give Kennedy some additional scoring punch from the backcourt. In returning to Conference A-1, where the top three finishers are guaranteed playoff spots, Kennedy will again battle with Garden City, Great Neck North, Jericho, Sewanhaka and Wantagh.

Lady Cougars to bring fast pace As the Lady Cougars lineup shakes out in head coach Darryl Wolf ’s second season, one thing is a given—the team will be among the best conditioned anywhere. Early season training camp put an emphasis on conditioning, because Kennedy’s going to use its deep roster of talented, athletic players to wear down the opposition on both ends of the floor. “We have enough depth that we can put anyone in and they’ll help us,” Wolf said. “I think we’re going to trap and push [the tempo]. With the full-court presses, you don’t want to [use] just five or six kids. We have enough versatility with the group that we can mix and match [lineups].” Junior Hannah Ferry is one of three returning starters and tops the chart at point guard, where her vision and ability to read plays make her a perfect fit at the position. Classmate Cora Travaglione will have a hand in almost everything Kennedy does, regardless of whether it’s on offense or defense after averaging 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals

per game last season. “She’s a very smart player,” Wolf said of Travaglione. “Shee understands the passing vy and her lanes, is very savvy hands are always on the ball. After guiding Garden City’s boys’ program for the past seven seasons, Larry Steimer takes the reins from T.J. Burke at Long Beach and is looking to lead the Marines back to the playoffs after they qualified for the Nassau Class AA tournament last winter. “We’re going through a ‘getting to know you’ phase,” Steimer said. “All the kids are starting to get it together. We’re in a difficult conference that added MacArthur and Westbury, but if things break right we’ll have a chance to make the playoffs.” Steimer built a rugged non-league schedule featuring defending Nassau Class A champion Valley Stream South, powerhouse Kellenberg, and improved Island Trees to prepare the Marines for the two Conference AAIII newcomers and fixtures Elmont, Calhoun, Herricks, and Mepham. “We need to finish .500 or better in the conference to make the playoffs,” he noted. Brought up to varsity midway through last season, point guard Norman Wilson held his own as a freshman. “He’s picking things up quickly and has tremendous upside,” Steimer said of the sophomore. “He’s a very good passer, and I think his scoring will increase as the season goes on.” Senior Ryan Silverman is a quality shooting guard with range. “We’ll try to get him some open looks and also ask him to handle the ball a little bit and take some pressure off Norman,” Steimer said. When it comes to defense, senior guard Brian Horne will set the tone. He brings a high motor and the ability to guard almost anyone. “He’s

athletic and strong,” Steimer said. “We’re going to ask him to rebound because he positions himself so well.” Junior Seamus McDonagh is Long Beach’s tallest player at 6-foot-4, and he brings a high basketball IQ along with a reliable jumper. “I can see him blossoming,” Steimer said. Senior Eric Zeppa will be part of the starting lineup and is someone the coach is counting on to make noise on the boards. Senior Andrew LaValle and junior Tanner Owens will also contribute at forward.

Different look for Lady Marines If the Lady Marines qualify for the playoffs for the third time in as many seasons under head coach Kristin Ciccone, their road to success is likely to be different. “We lost five girls who were very important to the program,” Ciccone said of last year’s senior group, which helped the team win 12 games and earn the No. 5 seed in the Class AA playoffs.. “We’re completely different,”” she added. “We don’t have the height we used to. We’re more guard-oriented.” There’s a chance this season’s starting lineup won’t have any seniors, but Ciccone believes her team will compete for the top spot in a wide-open Conference AA-III. “I think we’ll be right in the mix,” she said. “The girls just have to trust each other and the system. The chemistry isn’t there yet, but it will be.” In falling to Freeport in the playoffs for a second straight season, Long Beach had a bright spot emerge last February in talented youngster Kadaja Bailey. Now a freshman starting two-guard, Bailey scored a team-high 17 points in the playoff game.

MALVERNE Mules seek return to top

alverne is looking to get its swagger back. The Mules once dominated the Nassau Class B boys’ basketball scene, winning seven of eight titles along with four Long Island crowns during that span, but the last three county championships have been celebrated by Wheatley (two straight) and Locust Valley. “We had such a wonderful run for an extended period of time,” assistant coach Walter Askinoff said. “We’re senior-laden and hoping to be near the top again. We’re unproven, but have a lot of potential.” Malverne, which last season defeated Wheatley twice during conference play but lost to the Wildcats in the Class B final, return just one full-time starter but are far from inexperienced. In the backcourt, the Mules have senior James Choisi at the point and senior Christopher Hackett at shooting guard. Both played considerable minutes a year ago. “James moves the ball around well and is a good penetrator to the basket,” said Askinoff, a fixture on the Malverne bench under head coach Darroll Lopez. “He’s also an in-your-face defender.” Hackett also goes hard to the rim and is a key part of the pressure defense. Bolstering the position is senior Warren Jones, who transferred into the district during the offseason. “He can go up and down the floor and be a tenacious defender,” Askinoff said. “He’ll help replace some of the 30-35 points we lost.” Senior 6-foot-4 forward Kevin Young is an accomplished varsity player who goes “block to block,”

Askinoff said. He played throughout the summer and can be a matchup problem for most opponents. When senior center Karim Martelly, who is 6-6, rejoins the Mules in a few weeks, they’ll be that much stronger up front, Askinoff noted. Another forward expected to contribute at both ends is senior Richard Holland, who brings good shooting range. “We’ll take some time to jell,” said Askinoff, who added the Mules will be tested by Kellenberg, Roosevelt, and Great Neck South in nonconference games, and by Farmingdale in the opening round of the Hank Williams Memorial Holiday Tournament.

Lady Mules athletic and balanced Many of the good things Lady Mules head coach Mike Pelan saw from his team during camp came out in a season-opening victory over West Hempstead in the first week of December. Fifth-yearr varsity guards Alexis Lopez, off an All-County campaign, scored 14, and Stephanie Gee,, an All-Conference selection, added six while running the offense smoothly. “It’s the most athletic and basketball IQ team I’ve had,” Pelan said. “We brought almost everyone back from a team that made the playoffs. The experience is huge, and we’ve got a nice mix of guards and forwards.” Gee will run the show from the point and brings a passfirst attitude. One of her main targets is Lopez, an outside threat who averaged a teamleading 14 points per game as a junior. “Alexis is a strong outside shooter who can also take it to the basket,” Pelan said of Lopez. “Her defensive game has steadily developed too.”

Opponents won’t be able to focus solely on Lopez and Gee, according ing to Pelan. MEPHAM Pirates boast versatile roster

The trick is getting those pieces put in the right places so the Pirates develop into a cohesive unit. “We want to play good, hard defense and take of the ball,” head coach Pat Fallon said, upon his return to the Mepham sidelines. “If we can do those two things, we’ll be headed in the right direction. “We have some interesting combinations, so we’ll see as the season unfolds what [guys] will be able to do and the contributions they can make.” The lone returning starter from last season’s team is senior Alec Bonilla, a strong wing player with good fundamentals that will be counted on for scoring production. If there’s an area of depth for the Pirates, it’s on the wing, where they have a number of talented two guards and small forwards that can line up at either position. Seniors Joe Terviario, Phil Bogamoz, Joe Bellairs, and Dyrell Henry are joined in the rotation by juniors John Amon and Casey Cote. “We’re going to get as many people involved as possible and see how the rotation [takes shape],” Fallon said. In the backcourt, sophomore Jeremy Lissade is stepping into the lead point guard role with help from junior Zach Egland, who is also going to get some time at shooting guard. “They can both do a little of everything,” Fallon said, noting they have good quickness, pressure the ball well on defense and have a good handle with it on offense.” Seniors Sean McDonald and Seamus Kirby will see 38 — December 18, 2014

Ten players return after helping guide Mepham to its first-ever appearance in the Nassau Class AA Final Four and a fourth straight regularseason conference champion-ship. “The goal is to play well, go hard every game, keep ourr streak in the conference alivee and make it back to the final four,” head coach Jim Mulvey said. A trio of senior cocaptains makes up the core of the Lady Pirates starting lineup—Megan Anderson, Nicole Moccio and Alexa Morris. OCEANSIDE Conference shift benefits Sailors

fter spending the past two seasons running Oceanside’s JV program, Al Lyson takes over the varsity helm from longtime head coach Dan Keegan. Lyson who inherited a roster comprised of nine seniors and four juniors, is looking for the Sailors to use their athleticism and size to get points off turnovers. “It’s been a smooth transition,” Lyson said. “The kids know what’s expected of them and they know my coaching style. We want to push the ball on offense, and pressure the ball on defense.” Lyson said leaving rough and tumble Conference AA-I should provide some relief in the schedule, though the Sailors, who had just one conference victory in 2013-14, will face former rivals Hempstead and Farmingdale in nonleague games. “Scouting this season will be very important,” he said. “Getting out of Conference I should help but there are some strong teams in Conference II, especially Baldwin.” Getting a lot of varsity court time last season should bode well for juniors Kevin O’Keefe, Kyle Martin, John Grossi, and Aronis Espinal. O’Keefe likes to attack the basket, Lyson said, and is being counted on to provide consistent scoring. He’ll primarily work at forward, though he’ll also bring the ball up the floor in certain situations. Martin will spearhead the defensive pressure from a guard position and be a factor offensively in transition and from three-point land. “Kyle is super athletic and we can get a lot of excitement out of him,” Lyson said. Grossi and senior Tyler

Lorderbaum can handle the point, and Lyson won’t rule out using both on the floor at the same time. Grossi split time between the JV and varsity last season, while Lorderbaum served as a varsity reserve. “They’re different types, but both make good decisions and can get the job done.” Lyson said. At 6-foot-4, Espinal is Oceanside’s main post player. He’ll crash the boards and chip in offensively along with senior Matt Pino. Senior Alex Malabet can make his presence felt as an outside shooter. “We’re thinking playoffs,” Lyson said.

Lady Sailors eye playoff spot A slight decrease in enrollment has the Lady Sailors with a new challenge on their hands. After knocking on the door for several seasons but failing to get over the hump in Conference AA-I, they’re set to tangle in AA-II. “We came so close to making the playoffs in A-I,” head coach Jason Manning said. “We didn’t realize until recently we were moving to A-II. The prospect of playing Baldwin is exciting. We have unbelievable respect for theirr program.” Oceanside, which finished d 9-8 overall but missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker criteria, faces defending county champion Baldwin, East Meadow, Hicksville, Plainview, Port Washington, and Valley Stream Central twice apiece. “If we do make the playoffs and draw a Conference A-I team, it wouldn’t be a shock for our girls to play them,” Manning said. “They’re used to it.” Leading the playoff charge will be senior four-year starter Claire McNamara, who earned All-Conference honors

last season, will be asked to fill the scoresheet more, Manning said, after averaging 10 points per game. “Claire likes to go to the basket and is also a good outside shooter,” he said. “She’s the player we want with the ball when a game is on the line.” There’s plenty of depth in the backcourt, Manning noted. Senior Mara Stewart, who can also contribute at forward, burst onto the scene last winter and led Oceanside in scoring at 12 points per game. “She’s scrappy and aggressive and plays at a high speed,” Manning said. Senior Meghan McNamara, an outside shooting threat, can start or be first backcourt player off the bench. Junior Cassie Cesario returns after starting most games at point guard and will be responsible for taking care of the ball and

SEWANHAKA Indians in search of playoff berth

ewanhaka has been an up-and-comer the past few seasons, but has failed to take the next step. With a balanced roster, a new conference, and their top scorer back, the Indians should compete for a playoff spot. They’ll face Garden City, Jericho, Wantagh, Great Neck South, and Bellmore-JFK in Nassau Conference A1. Head coach Jay Allen believes this is the most complete team he has had in his years at Sewanhaka. “The guys don’t mind being role players, as long as it leads to good things,” Allen said. “They’re very unselfish, and just want to succeed. It’s extremely important. They’ve bought into what we’re trying to do. Expectations are definitely high.” Senior Carlos Bodden, the team’s leading scorer a year ago, is the go-to player. Bodden, a 6-foot-3 guard/forward, has been a handful around the basket in the past. He has improved his outside game, and loves to run the floor. Sophomore Kamoy Silvera will run the point for the Indians. Silvera is a prototypical, pass-first point guard. He runs the break well, and is by far the team’s best passer. Fellow sophomore Jonathan Boyd can play both the point and the two-guard, and is a threat from the perimeter. Junior Jessen Leesse is a pesky defender who plays well in transition. Justin Alexander, a 6-6 senior, does a nice job of rebounding, challenging shooters, and blocking shots. Junior Elijah Tracey is the team’s best athlete, most versatile player, and toughest defender. Expect Justin Apolo to be a key contributor off the 44 — December 18, 2014

bench. Junior Luke Iandoli should be one of Sewanhaka’s top newcomers. Iandoli is a heady player who will be tough on the boards. Allen expects Iandoli to be a tremendous fit. Junior Greg DeVita will look to light it up from the outside. Allen has put together a killer non-conference schedule to prepare his team for conference rivals. The Indians will take on Uniondale, Carey, Hewlett, Roslyn, and defending county champion Valley Stream South.

One step at a time for Lady Indians Sewanhaka comes off a disappointing season that ended with a loss to Glen Cove in the opening round of the playoffs. With three starters back, including two who earned All-County honors, and a group of talented newcomers, the Lady Indians hope to be in the hunt come playoff time. Head coach Alex Soupios has high hopes but is using the approach preached by Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. “I tell the girls over and over that rather than look at the end result, they should set goals to get better as players, and to become closer as a y team every single day. If they focus on that, all the other stuff will take care of itself.” Senior captain Daniella Ford, a two-time All-County honoree, is the consummate point guard. Ford is the team’s vocal leader, and an extension of Soupios on the court. She sets up her teammates, draws charges, and basically does whatever it takes to help her team succeed. Sophomore Destiny Hurt should be a terrific partner in the backcourt. Hurt is an

agile slasher with a solid midrange jumper. Her excellent on-ball defense should pester opposing guards. Freshman Cherish Francis is a terrific passer who likes to run the floor. Senior Brittney Cange is a hard-working player who has earned time on the court. All-County forward Casey Hayes should be a doubledouble machine. The 6-foot junior has a soft touch, and has improved her game with her back to the basket. Senior Michelle Niles, a five-year varsity performer, has outstanding basketball IQ, rebounds well, and can shoot the three. SOUTH SIDE Cyclones look to contend again

oming off a conference championship season that ended with an upset loss in the quarterfinal round of the Nassau Class A playoffs, South Side coach Jerry D’Angelo is looking for the Cyclones to be factors in the conference and county pictures again. “Expectations were a bit higher than where we ended up last season, but Floral Park played an excellent game to knock us out,” D’Angelo said. “We brought back seven from the roster, and this season we’re facing teams we haven’t played in quite a while. It’s an interesting mix.” The Cyclones, who went 14-0 against conference rivals last season, are competing in Conference A2 along with Carey, Great Neck North, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, and Plainedge. “While we have talent, we’re not really battle-tested yet,” D’Angelo said. “We can try a lot of different things in non-league games, so that’s a plus.” South Side’s go-to guy is junior guard Alex Sorensen, an All-County selection who poured in 15 points per game and ripped down nine rebounds. He’s led the team in boards in back-to-back seasons. “Alex is the complete package and such a mismatch nightmare,” D’Angelo said. “He can take anyone to the basket and has increased shooting range. He defends really well and is a tremendous rebounding guard.” In the paint, 6-foot-8 junior Tim Awosika is capable of posting a double-double every game, D’Angelo said, and is a consistent shot-blocker who can also run the floor. “Tim put on a lot of muscle and played a lot of basketball dur-

ing the offseason,” the coach noted. Senior Garrett Gallego is a returning starter in the frontcourt and brings plenty of energy to the floor. He’s strong on the glass, while senior forward John Cheslock can chip in under the boards and burn a zone with his perimeter shooting. Senior guard Tim Kelly also gives the Cyclones another dimension from the outside. Junior Matt DiLuccio is in the mix to start at the point, while seniors Kevin Spadaford and Luke Picchioni will contribute at forward and guard, respectively.

V.S. CENTRAL Youthful Eagles will be competitive

ast season was a successful one that ended in disappointment for Valley Stream Central, which compiled a 9-3 record in Conference AA-II but suffered a first-round exit in the Nassau Class AA boys’ playoffs courtesy of Calhoun. Head coach Hayward Alfred returns only a handful of players with varsity experience, but feels the Eagles will be a tough opponent given their collection of strong shooters and aboveaverage size. “We’re young, but these kids are a joy to coach and they’re going to work hard and compete,” Alfred said. “We’ll get better as the season goes on. Our conference is always outstanding, and we know we have to come to play every night.” Leading the charge for the Eagles is senior Winston Jones, a 6-foot-5 wing coming off an All-County campaign that saw him average 16 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. “He has a team-first attitude and serves as a great role model,” Alfred said of Jones, who excels in the classroom as well with a 95 GPA. “He’s got good range and makes things happen in the pick-and-roll.” Senior Carlos Jackson, who ran the football team’s offense as its starting quarterback, transforms to a tough and physical forward on the basketball court. He has a smooth mid-range jumper, Alfred said, rebounds, and does a lot of the dirty work that doesn’t show up in a boxscore. “He can shoot from the outside, so the defense can’t just lay in the paint and wait for him,” Alfred said. run the floor, is in the mix to start after coming off the bench last season. Junior Jermaine Fraser, up from JV, is 6-3 and can help Central stretch the court. Senior Tyrone Gordon is the floor general and someone Alfred said can be a monster in transition. Sophomore William Ellis is a tenacious defender, junior Jaison-Patric Gordon is a quick guard with a nose for the ball, and junior Eric Pujols can knock down treys.

Leadership a plus for Lady Eagles After serving as the Lady Eagles’ JV coach for the past three seasons, Malyssa Thorngren takes over the varsity helm and is working with a roster comprised of five returnees and seven newcomers. “It should be fun, but it’s going to take a little while forr everything to come together,”” Thorngren said. “The girls need to learn how to play together in a new system, and that doesn’t happen overnight. They just have to go out and work to get better every day.” While chemistry is in the works, leadership is something Thorngren said she’s had since the opening day of practice. Seniors Naomi Bolassingh and Jasmine Garden will not only lead Central’s backcourt but also help an otherwise young squad grow. “Naomi and Jasmine are both great leaders,” Thorngren said. “It’s almost like having two coaches on the court.” Bolasingh is a strong allaround player who will see minutes at both guard spots. “She’s a great creator and someone who can beat defenders off the dribble,” Thorngren said. “Her jump shot has come a long way. She’s also a good free-throw shooter who can get to the line.”

season after missing the Nassau Class A boys’ playoffs by a single game, Valley Stream North will try to navigate what promises to be a tough conference schedule and come out .500 or better on the other side to take part in the postseason. “Most of our games last season were pretty tight,” head coach Dan Achatz said. “We’re looking to find a way to win the close ones this season and get to the playoffs. The guys have a chip on their shoulders. We’ve got a wellrounded team that did a lot of work over the summer.” Achatz considers Conference A4 to be the strongest in Nassau. It includes defending county champion Valley Stream South, highly touted Lawrence, Roosevelt, and Lynbrook. “South and Lawrence are two of the top 16 preseason ranked teams on Long Island,” he said. “We’ve got our work cut out.” Returning to run the Spartans’ offense is senior point guard Mahlik McLeod, who averaged 15 points per game last season. “He can shoot, drive and dish,” Achatz said. “He snuck under the radar a little bit, but that’s no longer the case. He’s our main offensive threat.” Big things are expected of junior forward Josh Dennis, a returning starter who made the Nassau Top 40. “He’s tall and finds a way to get to the basket,” Achatz said. “He’s a shot-blocker and also one of our best on-ball defenders.” Two seasons at the JV level has sophomore guard Noah Shy ready to make an impact on the varsity hardwood. He’s a tenacious defender and a developing offensive talent. Another player who gives 48 — December 18, 2014

The coach said 6-foot-4 senior Corey Miles made tremendous progress during the offseason and is ready to assume the role of starting center. Senior forward Joe Kempton will provide leadership and contribute at both ends, while junior guard Jordan James can burn a zone with his outside jumper.

Lady Spartans look to rebound Last season was difficult on the Lady Spartans, who couldn’t overcome a combination inexperience, injuries, and a challenging conference schedule featuring two of the top teams in Nassau Class A. There were no victories to celebrate, but coach Geoff O’Connell believes 2014-15 will be a fun season. “I like the new conference alignment and think a lot of the games will be close,” O’Connell said. “We have a high-spirited group of girls and they’ve been showing e. some great things in practice. We’re hoping to make a playoff run.” Defending county champion North Shore heads a new-look list of Conference A4 opponents that includes Lawrence, Lynbrook, Roosevelt, and Valley Stream South. The Lady Spartans will play each conference rival twice in addition to seven non-league games. If North is to put last season in the rearview mirror and have success, senior Julia LoSchiavo will need to be right in the middle of it all. O’Connell said he’s expecting big things from the three-year starter in the frontcourt. “Julia is a strong presence

in the paint,” he said. “She blocks well, rebounds, and hits routine shots. Teams will definitely have to keep an eye on her.” Returning at point guard is junior Tara Meehan, who started every game last season and gained valuable experience. “She’s more comfortable and confident,” O’Connell said. “She can shoot from the outside and free up other things for the offense.” Also expected to see minutes at the point is sophomore Ashlie Rodriguez, the top player on last year’s JV squad who’s crafty off the dribble. Sophomore Lisa LoSchiavo stepped into a starting role last season at forward and figures to make a bigger impact this winter. O’Connell said she can be a factor in

WANTAGH Warriors hungry for playoffs

antagh was in rebuilding mode last season with a whole new starting lineup, but enters the 2014-15 campaign full of seniors and hope for a playoff run. The Warriors went 4-12 last year but seven of their losses came by single digits. While there are still many new faces, head coach Keith Hunter said returning to the playoffs is a major focus entering the season. “We had a disappointing year so there is a little thirst to make the playoffs,” Hunter said. “We’re very optimistic.” Helping go anchor Wantagh’s backcourt is 6-foot-4 senior guard Stephen Becker, who averaged four points a game as a junior. Setting up Wantagh’s offense is senior point guard Pat Kissane, who saw time on the floor toward the end of his junior campaign and tallied five points in a 67-59 loss against Carey. Guard Chris Taibi, one of the top boys soccer players on Long Island, is also back for his senior hoops season and gives Hunter some athleticism in the starting lineup. Wantagh’s senior-heavy roster also includes 5-6 forward Billy Pappas, who scored seven points against Carey, and Andrew Semler. Junior Will O’Brien is also expected to be a key contributor in Wantagh’s quest for a return to the postseason. Coach Hunter is also excited about 6-6 sophomore center Evan Goldberg, who started on junior varsity as a freshman. Hunter likes to go deep into his bench and will go with multiple staring lineups depending on who has the hot hand. “They are going to be hun52 — December 18, 2014

gry so whoever is playing the best is going to play,” he said. “Everyone is going to be contributing.” Wantagh competes in Conference A1, which will have a new look with South Side and Carey gone and the arrival of Sewanhaka and Great Neck South. Garden City, Kennedy, and Jericho remained along with the Warriors, who can punch their ticket to the playoffs by finishing in the conference’s top three or achieving a .500 or better conference record.

High hopes for Lady Warriors Wantagh steamrolled the regular season last winter only to see its championship hopes suddenly dashed by its eastern neighbors. The memories of last February’s 44-42 heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Seaford following a 14-0 conference season are still fresh in the minds of Wantagh’s returning players, and longtime head coach Stan Bujacich is hoping that disappointment serves a heavy motivator for 2014-15 campaign. Wantagh suffered a similar fate in 20133 when it fell in the quarterfinals to Sewanhaka, 41-39, after an undefeated conference mark. “We’ve been humbled by what happened to us the last two years,” said Bujacich, who enters his 22nd year as head coach and led Wantagh to a pair of county titles, in 2004-05, and ’05-06. “We’re ready.” Wantagh has four returning starters including 6-foot-3 senior center Alex Parlato, who will be playing on the collegiate level at Fordham and has earned All-State honors the last two seasons. Parlato averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds per game as a junior. Another starter back for

her senior campaign is point guard Christina Peden, who has earned All-County y accolades the last two seasons. She averaged 11 points a game as a junior while also picking up many steals on defense. “She is a tremendous defender,” said id Bujacich of Peden.. “She is a very high h energy player.” Joining Peden in the backcourt iss junior guard Nikkii Sliwak, who averaged 7 points a game last year in her third season on varsity. est Hempstead returns just one starter from a team that won a conference championship in 2013-14. Despite the lack of experience, and a lot of uncertainty as to where points are going to come from, the Rams should be tough on the defensive end of the floor. In a conference composed of Locust Valley, Seaford, Clarke, Island Trees, Mineola, and Friends Academy, expect the Rams to be in hunt for another league crown. Head coach Ed Cosgrove believes his team will be fine once it jells. “We’re still finding our way,” Cosgrove said. “We’re inexperienced, but a lot of the guys have been part of past success. They understand the expectations, and they’ve seen what it takes. “We might not have a superstar, but we’re deep,” he added. “We’re going to have to have pride in our defense, and look to keep opponent’s scores down.” Senior Anthony Beaubrun is the go-to guy for the Rams. Beaubrun is a versatile player who can play four different positions, defend the opponent’s top threat, bring the ball up the floor, rebound, and score. His improved shooting ability added another element to his game. Senior point guard Sean Mashburn joins Beaubrun in the backcourt. Seniors Darius Francis and Bryce Cohen are going to be key to West Hempstead’s offensive attack. Cosgrove is hopeful that one or both will be able to be consistent from the perimeter and contribute offensively. Senior captain Bobby Smith is a hard-working, scrappy player who does all the little things it takes to be

successful. Smith is tough on the glass, and gets his points through tireless effort. The Rams have a pair of juniors with size, but both are relatively inexperienced. He’s a gamer who shines in big spots. Junior Izaiah Budhoo is likely the team’s best threat for the perimeter.

Inexperienced Rams hope to contend The West Hempstead girls’ basketball team comes off back-to-back seasons that resulted in playoff berths. With just a few players back from last season, the team will rely heavily on its returnees, and look for contributions from key newcomers. The Rams finished g 7-5 a season ago before falling to Wantagh in the opening round of the playoffs. Head coach Chris Van Kovics said he needs his team to limit its turnovers, and control the backboards. “As always, we need to stick to what we do on defense, and limit the opponent’s opportunities,” Van Kovics said. “We’re going to have to show different looks, use a little trickery, and make it tough for opponents to set up on offense. Every possession we have has to end up with a shot. We can’t afford to turn the ball over and waste opportunities.” Kayla Cleare will lead the way for the Rams. Cleare is the most basketball savvy player on the team. The 6-foot center is tough on the boards, defends well, and has excellent court sense. She’ll be asked to do a lot for a team
