So many extracurricular choices, how do you decide?
As a caring parent you want the best for your child. But picking and choosing activities that will be fun and constructive can be overwhelming. There are so many choices — from music lessons and sports, to hobbies and clubs — all of which run the gamut of competitiveness, expense, and time commitment. Then there’s the question of letting your child pick their own activities versus you picking the activities you think are best. So, where do you start? There are some things to keep in mind. Most important, for older children, make sure their outside of school activities do not interfere with their academic performance. Do not overbook their schedule. Make sure they have enough time to do homework and get enough sleep, which is paramount for healthy development. Encourage your child to choose an activity they think will be fun. Childhood is the best time for exploring interests, support this!
completing an activity of your choice. • Select more than one activity, if your schedule allows. • Consider how you want your child to participate in the activity and the goal of his involvement. Is just learning (recreational) or does he want to be on a competitive/performance team? Also, consider any travel involved. Are you going to need to pick your child up from school and drive 45 minutes to an activity? There’s nothing wrong with traveling to an activity, but keep the driving time and costs incurred in mind.
What type of activity is best for your child? The best activity for your child is one that interests him. If your child is old enough to express interest in a particular activity, listen to him! Present your child with several choices and allow her to choose (assuming she is old enough to have a preference). In cases where, your pediatrician, or your child’s teacher, has suggested participation in a certain activity for a specific reason (such as more exercise or help with homework) but your child has zero interest in it, more than a little encouragement may be needed.
What are your child’s strengths and weaknesses? Extracurricular activities are a great way to address your child’s skill set and minimize any weaknesses in a friendly, relaxed environment. Use this breakdown of types of activities and how they can help add to your child’s positive development as a guide. Team sports/activities (i.e. soccer, basketball and choir) can help with: • Attention/ focus • Physical fitness/stamina • Gross motor skills (running, jumping, kicking, balance, coordination) • Social skills (team work, sportsmanship, communication, leadership) • Behavior (discipline, anger management, assertiveness/shyness, impulse control)
Try these tactics: • Sign up for a new activity with a friend. • Allow your child to choose his own activity as a reward for
Individual sports (i.e. gymnastics and track) can help with: • Attention/focus • Physical fitness/stamina
Activities such as athletics and band, among others, offer lessons that carry over into the classroom environment, helping kids become more successful.
• Gross motor skills • Social skills (in both competitive and recreational individual sports) • Behavior • Self-esteem/awareness (for children who have low selfesteem, it is best to begin with non-competitive sports)
Individual/club activities (i.e.: chess, drama, art) can help with: • Social/behavioral skills • Self-esteem/awareness • Cognitive skills (learning, broadening education) • Attention • Fine motor skills (dexterity, ability to do detail work) Of course, activities should engage your child in a positive way, whether she is trying a sport, a club, or a class meant to help her supplement her skills. If she can discover a passion in the process, then you’ve struck gold. Keep your expectations realistic and age-appropriate remember that you may need to try a few different types of activities before you find one that really works for your child (and for you).

As the school year passes the halfway point, some kids may get distracted from their studies. If you and your kids want to re-focus on school success, here are some suggestions for kick-starting learning: Commit to learning. With your children, come up with one or two major goals that you want to accomplish for the remainder of this school year. Raising that algebra grade? Getting homework done on time and turning it in the next day? Organizing a study area at home? Using a planner regularly and efficiently? Agree on some age-appropriate rewards and consequences. Commit to a family-centered goal that education is important to all of you, and work together to support, encourage and help each other. Set up helpful routines. Give your kids the consistency of fairly regular routines (weekends and holidays can be breaks). Bedtime, wake-up, study, homework, play, family time — kids rely on these routines, and the structure helps them to feel safe, know what's expected of them and be successful. Help them organize. Organized kids do better in school than haphazard kids. Help them to set up their planners (written or electronic), to keep their notebooks and backpacks neat and orderly, to break up large assignments into smaller ones so they don't seem overwhelming, to maintain a work space at home that's actually workable and not a disaster area, and to stick to the goals
you've set together. Maintain healthy habits. Healthy kids are better learners. Help your children by monitoring their screen time (TV, video games, cell phones, etc.), making sure they're getting enough sleep, insisting on their good eating habits, making sure they're involved in regular and aerobic exercise, and sticking to the goals and routines you've established. Be a good role model. Kids learn from their parents. If they see that you're organized, focused on what's important to you and your family, staying healthy and being true to your values, they'll pick up some pretty important life lessons. Don't give up. Let your kids know that you're serious about these goals and that their school success is as critical to you as it is to them. Get help early if you need it. When your kids show that they're having trouble despite your best efforts, get help early. Ask a teacher or guidance counselor for help. Get a tutor. Find a "study buddy" for your kid. Just get help before the little problem grows into a big one. Ask other parents. You're not the only one trying to keep your kids on track. Learn from parents who've been through this, teachers who've guided hundreds of kids and others whose opinions you respect. No one has all the answers, but all of us have a lot of ideas.
Manage the end-of-the-school-year crunch with a renewed emphasis on goals and achievement.

A perfect fit There’s a camp for every child By Judy Fishkind
Every day brings a new adventure and a chance to learn new skills. to make friends that can last a lifetime. population while others are inclusive. Tweens and teens are ready to expand their horizons. At this age, campers are ready to experience a whirlwind of adventures from local day trips to overnight travels. It’s important to make sure that the staff who are leading this age group are mature educators who have the knowledge and experience to provide this population with a wonderful summer. Is your child too old to be a camper but not quite ready to work? A Counselor-In-Training program will give your teen the opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. Many CIT curriculums offer this age group the opportunity to travel as well. What are the most influential factors in deciding on a summer camp? Often it’s where your child’s friends are going. If your child attended a preschool in the community, many of their friends will continue on to that organization’s summer day camp. Price or hours of operation may also be a factor. Are you planning a family vacation? Then, you want to choose a camp that will allow your child to miss some time from camp without financial penalty. Other things to take into consideration are counselor to camper ratios, transportation options, how competitive the camp is, counselor expertise as well as pre-and post-camp 752175

care for working parents. For the older campers, the quality of the overnight facilities is a key factor in choosing a travel program as well as the mode of transportation. Whatever camp you choose, always consider your child’s personality and interests. Picking out a program together empowers your child and gives them confidence. They are creating memories that will last forever! Judy Fishkind is a consultant with Camp Friedberg, operated by the Friedberg JCC. Camp
Friedberg has offered camping programs for the past 53 years for children ages 2-16: including preschool camps in three community locations, 300 lush acres at the Henry Kaufmann campgrounds for school-age children, travel programs for tweens and teens, CIT programs, and specialty camps including special needs, theatre, art and Sunrise Day Camp, the only full summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings.
