he Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been a vital resource for Long Islanders — and all New Yorkers — coping with breast cancer for decades.

Since its start in 1980, the more than 100 highly trained volunteers offer comfort, guidance and referrals, all free. Social work staff provides professional services.

Before the pandemic, throughout the pandemic and now that we’ve returned to post-pandemic normalcy, Adelphi’s dedicated volunteers and staff continue to be devoted to meeting the challenges and needs of patients and survivors. In addition to the hotline, locally the program offers support groups, individual and family counseling, plus educational forums and workshops.

Hotline staffers are readily available to respond to everyone who has concerns about breast cancer.

Many survivors are longtime hotline volunters. They contribute their personal insights in their ongoing effort to help others; sharing their message that it is possible to get through this — and even thrive — as you find your own way on this unanticipated journey. These survivors have turned their encounter with the disease into an opportunity to better themselves and those around them. Their mantra: it’s possible to move on — and even thrive — as you find your own way on this unanticipated journey. As per the hotline’s motto, “You are not alone.”

When a person receives a diagnosis of breast cancer, it becomes a defining moment in their life. My moment came in October 2007 when I was first diagnosed. At the time, I was devastated. I didn’t realize then that’s such bad news could lead to something so positive.

Not long after finding out that I had cancer, I called the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline.

As a matter of fact, I used this resource several times along the way. Each time, a volunteer answered my questions and listened to all my concerns about my diagnosis, my doctors’ appointments, and all the tough decisions that I had to make during this difficult time. But most of all, they were there to just listen. I was able to face my surgeries and my chemo treatments with the confidence that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Two years after my diagnosis, I received a call from a supervisor at the Adelphi program. She asked me if I was interested in entering a professional training program to

become a hotline volunteer. I have been involved in this rewarding work for over 12 years now. Sometimes a person will call in need of help. At the end of the call, I can hear them breathe a sigh of relief. I realize that, just for a short while, I have made a difference in someone’s day.

We live in a time where the internet has become a go-to resource. But being able to connect with a person who knows what you are going through cannot only be informative, but very healing as well.

I am so happy to be part of a program that can direct women to teaching hospitals, low-cost mammograms and also help them to navigate the road to getting a second opinion. Very often, these conversations can help to provide the confidence a person may need to advocate for themselves. I’m happy to be there for them in the way that someone was there for me years ago — a voice on the other end of the phone, letting them know that they are not alone.

However, in December 2022, just around the time I was about to retire from my job, I was given the opportunity to work with the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program as a volunteer.

I enthusiastically agreed to do so because I thought about how much I could have benefitted from real emotional support and how that could have made a real difference in my own journey. And so, in an effort to help others and contribute to the Long Beach community (where I live), I began the training with a group of women who, though of different ages, backgrounds, and circumstances, were all breast cancer survivors. We shared our personal stories, role-played with each other, engaged in art therapy, heard important information from respected speakers, and even formed a “Warriors Book Club” as a way of empowering ourselves through contemporary literature.

But even more noticeably, I have discovered that my participation in this organization has allowed me to finally come to grips with my own diagnosis. Although I am now thankfully cancer-free, I still live with its permanent after-effects. Nevertheless, by knowing I have a support program that is with me and for me, I can cope with these conditions and confidently go forward. For that, I am ever so grateful.

When I was first diagnosed with Stage 3C breast cancer in January 2016, I felt lost, devastated and very afraid. Not only did I have to face a complicated course of treatment, including a double-mastectomy, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and daily bouts of radiation, but I also had to face it alone. I felt that my status as a person had been relegated to that of a “patient,” and that my future was nothing more than an uncertain mess.

Of course, my family and friends were all supportive in the best ways they knew how, although there were so many instances where well-meaning people would ask when I had last seen my doctor, or what was the date of my last mammogram, somehow implying that this was a preventable condition that could have been avoided. But on the flip side, there were also those who unnecessarily tragedized the situation, causing me to minimize and downplay my feelings in order to placate them.

Because none of this was truly helpful, I decided the right approach was to put on a happy face, follow my doctors’ care and instructions, and stoically hope for the best.

But this was easier said than done, considering that I knew no one who had actually undergone or was going through the process. All I had available was the internet, which unfortunately offered too many tales of hardship, mistreatment, and the sickening effects of “the red devil” (an infamous nickname for a type of chemotherapy given to breast cancer patients). None of this was at all helpful, and in fact, caused me more grief

Volunteering on the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline has had a profound impact on my own life. It has allowed me to connect with people who are going through a difficult time in their lives — in that way it has helped me to develop empathy and compassion for their struggles and has helped make me a more understanding and caring person.

I’ve had to educate myself more about breast cancer and its various aspects. This knowledge has helped me make informed decisions about my own health and the health of my loved ones.

Being part of the breast cancer hotline provides me with a sense of belonging and support. Sharing experiences and providing guidance to others strengthens my own emotional resilience.

Knowing that I am making a meaningful difference in the lives of others gives me a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Volunteering is a two-way street. While I am providing support and assistance to others, I’m gaining valuable experiences and personal growth. It has been a mutually beneficial arrangement that has had a positive impact on my own person journey.

By the numbers Stay vigilant and know the facts Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women (excluding skin cancer) and second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and 1 in 833 men.

• In 2023, an estimated 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S., with an estimated 55,720 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) diagnosed. An estimated 43,700 women will die from breast cancer.

• In 2023, 18,780 women in New York State will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Remember, breast cancer affects men too.

• Breast cancer death rates have dropped by 41 percent since 1989, as a result of earlier detection through increased awareness and mammography screening, as well as advances in treatments. Despite this drop, Black women are 40 percent more likely to die of breast cancer than white women overall and are twice as likely to die if they are younger than age 50.1 • The five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes or other location is 99 percent.

• There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today, including those who have completed treatment and those still undergoing treatment. More than 150,000 of these survivors are living with metastatic breast cancer..

• The average risk of a woman in the U.S. getting breast cancer during her life is about 12 percent.

• About 15 percent of women with breast cancer have a family member with this disease.

• Evidence is growing that regular physical activity reduces breast cancer risk, especially in women after menopause. Exactly how physical activity might reduce breast cancer risk isn’t clear, but it may be due to its effects on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance.

or over four decades now, October has been the month that is devoted to educating and bringing awareness to breast cancer and sharing the importance of early detection and access to high-quality care.

Did you know that one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? That amounts to one person every two minutes in the United States.

According to the CDC, about 9% of all new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. are found in women younger than 45; breast cancer risk increases as women get older. Black women are less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than white women but are 41% more likely to die from the disease. About 170,000 people in the United States are living with metastatic breast cancer.

Many women diagnosed with breast cancer feel a sense of urgency about jumping right in and starting treatment immediately. In most cases, though, there’s time to do some research to make sure your diagnosis is correct and your treatment plan makes sense — and this may include getting a second opinion.

This means asking another breast cancer specialist, or a team of specialists, to review all of your medical reports and test results, give an opinion about your diagnosis, and suggest treatment options. A second opinion may confirm your original doctor’s diagnosis and treatment plan, provide more details about the type and stage of breast cancer, raise additional treatment options you hadn’t considered, or recommend a different course of action.

Even if you’ve already had treatment, it’s not too late to get a second opinion. A second doctor can weigh in on your diagnosis and treatment plan to date, offering any additional thoughts or recommendations.

The very idea of getting a second opinion can seem overwhelming at first, especially when you’ve just been diagnosed with breast cancer. It can take time and legwork to find a second doctor, arrange for the second opinion, and deal with any insurance issues that may arise. It also can be intimidating to tell your current doctor you want a second opinion. But many people with breast cancer decide to get second opinions, and doctors are used to hearing this request. In fact, your doctor may be

able to help you find another specialist who can provide a second opinion. In general, delaying the start of treatment for a short time usually does not pose a risk, although you and your doctor can discuss your situation and decide how much of a delay is OK. Determining The Best Treatment Plan Simply getting a breast cancer diagnosis is good enough reason to seek a second opinion.

Most people think nothing of shopping around before buying a car, or making some other major purchase. In the case of a cancer diagnosis, it can be helpful, even critically important, to get another opinion before you make decisions about treatment.

“Because of my unique diagnosis and complex family history, there were a number of complex decisions to be made where there was no right answer,” says Marisa Weiss, MD, chief medical officer of Breastcancer.org. “My medical oncologist encouraged me to seek a second opinion and was very open to getting input from other medical oncologists on the best solutions moving forward. While I didn’t seek an ‘official’ second opinion, I did reach out to several colleagues who had special expertise in the thorny areas of making decisions.”

A study of nearly 150 breast cancer patients in Michigan found that more than half were advised to change their treatment plans after getting a second opinion from a multidisciplinary tumor board made up of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists,

radiologists, and pathologists. (Most hospitals and cancer centers have a tumor board that reviews selected cancer cases — typically, cases that are more complex or challenging.)

Even the most qualified, highly skilled doctors can make mistakes or differ in their opinions about what’s best for your situation and your type of breast cancer.

Likewise, if a breast cancer is HER2negative but test results classify it as HER2positive, doctors may recommend anti-HER2 treatments — even though the woman is unlikely to get any benefits and is exposed to the medicines’ risks. Receiving a different interpretation than the original HER2 test results is just one example of a second pathology opinion changing a person’s treatment plan.

Consideration Of HER2 Status Research has shown that the results of testing for HER2 status are incorrect in 8 percent of cases, even when done by expert labs, and HER2 status can sometimes vary depending on the area of the tumor that’s tested.

By Reyna Machado This October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is urging women to schedule their annual mammogram.

Life is busy these days. The hustle and bustle of the fall is followed by the holidays and many series of commitments. However, it’s important and empowering for everyone to obtain their annual health screenings and not get so caught up in our daily routines that we neglect to stay on top our health.

Research indicates that mammograms decrease breast cancer deaths by 15 to 29 percent. An annual screening mammogram is your best defense against breast cancer.

Mammography detects most cancers in women who show no symptoms or who are considered low risk. False alarms can be stressful, but the fact is that early detection saves lives. One in six breast cancers occurs in women ages 40 to 49.

Not sure what age to begin? Speak with your healthcare provider to make an informed decision. Together, you can decide on the best approach given your family history, medical history and individual cancer risk.

Not sure about your coverage? Call your insurance provider. If you are uninsured, contact the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program for information on a free or low-cost mammogram. The pro-

gram has a variety of services and events this month including community outreach at several health fairs, breast health workshops in local libraries, and an event with Legislator Siela Bynoe and the NUMC Mobile Mammography Van in Rockville Centre on Oct. 20.

Don’t be afraid of mammograms!

Remember that only about 2 to 4 screening mammograms in 1,000 lead to a diagnosis of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

What’s on the plate always matters If you’re recovering from surgery, receiving chemotherapy or radiation, or having other breast cancer treatment, your main focus is on getting rid of the cancer. Eating well will help you stay strong by giving your body the nutrients it needs.

You and your doctor can’t predict exactly how your treatment will affect you. Your general health and weight before your diagnosis play a role. So do the type, amount, and length of treatment you are receiving.

As you move through your treatment, listen to your body and respond to what it needs. You may continue to enjoy cooking and eating and have a normal appetite. Or you might have days when you don’t feel like eating anything, days when you want to eat everything, and times when only some things taste good. It’s best to have a flexible, healthy eating plan to help you deal with your body’s changing needs and wants.

A healthy diet — one with a variety of foods that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and regular protein — gives you the reserves of nutrients you need to keep your strength up while you’re being treated for breast cancer.

These reserves also help rebuild your body’s tissues and keep your immune system strong to help fight off infection.

Plus, a healthy diet can help you manage treatment side effects.

There is evidence that some cancer treatments actually work better in people who are eating enough calories and protein.

While you’re having breast cancer treatment, it’s more important than ever that you eat a healthy diet.

Aim for a variety of foods. Create a balanced plate that is one-half cooked or raw vegetables, one-fourth lean protein (chicken, fish, lean meat, or dairy) and one-fourth whole grains; Go for the fish. Eat fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines and tuna, at least twice a week. The fats in these fish are the “good” heart-healthy omega-3 fats; other sources of these fats include walnuts, canola oil, and flaxseeds; Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol has been linked to

cancer risk. Men should have no more than two drinks a day; women should have no more than one drink.

Eat foods high in vitamin D. These include salmon, sardines, fortified orange juice, milk, and fortified cereal. Research suggests that vitamin D, which also comes from sun exposure, prevents cancer and may decrease the risk of recurrence and improve survival.

People in regions with limited sunshine may be deficient and thus benefit from a vitamin D3 supplement (ask your physician about a blood test to measure deficiency); Food — not supplements — are the best source of vitamins and minerals. There is no evidence that dietary supplements provide the same anti-cancer benefits as fruits and vegetables, and some high-dose supplements may actually increase cancer risk.

he Parker Jewish Institute is pleased to announce that its President and CEO Michael N. Rosenblut was recognized with the Humanitarian Award by Voices for Truth and Humanity. The honor was presented to Mr. Rosenblut at the 4th Annual Remembrance Awards dinner, at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on

Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Voices for Truth and Humanity promotes U.S. public-school education about the Holocaust, slavery, and genocide. The organization aims to fight hatred against Jews as well as all bigotry.

These values resonate with the Parker community. Since its inception in 1914, Parker has stood for inclusion, aiding New York’s most vulnerable population, including immigrants and older adults.

That tradition remains steadfast at Parker, a culturally rich institution that welcomes people of all backgrounds, whether they are patients, residents or team members.

Parker is now home to an Indian Cultural Unit, the first of its kind, serving East and West Indian older adults in the region. Through a grant from the Jewish Federation of North America, Parker recently deployed its Hope and Healing program. This innovative program is designed to address the unique challenges faced by family caregivers of older adults with dementia and a history of trauma, regardless of their age,

gender, race, ethnicity, geography, or sexual orientation.

Under Mr. Rosenblut’s direction, Parker embraces diversity and meritocracy, where team members boost their skill sets through education and mentorship. Parker focuses on service, where staff takes pride in exceeding expectations of the Institute’s patients, residents and their families, treating everyone with respect.

On Wednesday, Mr. Rosenblut said he was honored to accept this recognition from Voices for Truth and Humanity.

After diagnosis Coping with what’s ahead

There’s no right or wrong way to feel after a diagnosis of breast cancer.

You’ll probably go through many emotions, from fear, shock and anger to disbelief, sadness and numbness.

Your emotions may change day to day or even hour to hour. It’s usual to have times when you feel very low followed by times when things seem more positive. The days and weeks immediately after a diagnosis can be particularly emotional and feel overwhelming. Many people start to feel a bit calmer or less anxious once they have been told about their treatment plan.

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when you’ve been diagnosed with cancer. It can be hard to think straight or carry out normal everyday activities. Some people have physical symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea or difficulty sleeping.

A breast cancer diagnosis can cause a wide range of feelings. Denial, guilt, helplessness, anxiety and fear are all normal. It is a stressful time. That is why it helps to build a strong support network of family and friends. Make time to share your feelings with others.

Co-survivors can be family, friends, coworkers or members from your health care team. They are there to help. A social worker or counselor can also help with a wide range of issues with breast cancer. They can also help you cope with financial concerns. Finally, talking to your doctor is one of the best things you

can do. Talk openly with each other. This will help you gain trust and confidence. It will also help you work together as a team to make key treatment decisions.

Feel Like You Are Losing control?

When told you have breast cancer, you may feel like you have lost control of your life.

You might be overwhelmed by the decisions you have to make. These feelings are normal.

Do not let them keep you from taking action though. First, learn about breast cancer at your own pace.

Get information about treatment options, side effects and clinical trials. Remember, doctors can discuss options, but the final decisions should be made together.

Knowing what to expect is another way to feel in control. It may also help to keep as normal a routine as possible. Be patient. Coping with breast cancer requires time, acceptance, a fighting spirit and support. Many people also find strength in their spirituality and faith.

Think about how you coped with previous trauma or stress — you could try using these methods again now. Above, all, be kind to yourself — it may help to take time to rest, eat healthily, keep active and, when you can, do something you enjoy.

Get Support Your team of doctors, nurses and social workers are valuable sources of support as you

cope with a cancer diagnosis. Oncology social workers are licensed professionals who counsel people affected by cancer, providing emotional support and helping people access practical assistance.

Talking about your emotions might be hard, but it can comfort you and the people who care about you. When you tell someone whom you love what you’re feeling, you give that person a chance to support you. You also give your relationship with that person a chance to grow.

Be specific. When reaching out to others, be specific about the kind of support you need. Saying something like,“It would be helpful if you could shop for groceries this week,” or “Can you please drive me to my next appointment?” gives people a clear way to help. This

approach cuts down on frustration and reassures your family and friends that they are being helpful.

Take steps to look and feel your best.

Many women feel uncomfortable with their appearance after having surgery or chemotherapy. If you had breast surgery or are experiencing hair loss and changes in your physical appearance, learn about options available, such as breast prostheses and wigs. Give yourself time to adjust to changes, and try different solutions until you find what makes you feel most comfortable.

Eat right

Changing your relationship to food and eating involves a major shift in thinking, feeling and doing. The goal of this shift is to create a lifestyle change, not to temporarily lose weight on a diet.

Choosing, making and eating food with an “abundance model” includes the pleasures of delicious choices, many tastes, ample portions, not feeling limited, not counting calories and eating when hungry.

This is in contrast to the more common “deprivation mModel” where rules of “do not” and “should not” leave us feeling bad or guilty with unmet hunger and cravings. Cycles of stress and depression-related eating are common with this model. A shift from “I can’t eat without feeling bad and guilty” to “I enjoy an abundance of healthy, delicious food” often results in a better-nourished and healthier self.

Reduce your risk of breast and other cancers — and reocurrence — by including the important cancer-fighting foods in your daily diet.

Pomegranates Pomegranate, the sweet seeded fruit of ancient myth, is a rich source of antioxidants, and scientists are discovering other possible health benefits.

Researchers have identified six chemicals in the pomegranate that suppress aromatase — a substance in the body that helps produce estrogen. About 70 percent of breast cancers need estrogen to grow, so pomegranate is a

prime candidate as a breast-cancer-blocking super food. Two substances in the fruit also have the potential to fight both colon cancer and diabetes.

Cinnamon Cinnamon is a popular spice with many benefits — including cancer fighting properties. Scientists have found that a cinnamon extract interfered with a protein that helps tumors establish a blood supply, which is critical to keep them growing. Now, researchers are pursuing additional studies on the spice that may choke the life out of cancer.

Mushrooms The mushroom is more than just a pizza topping or salad fixing. Researchers have found that the common white-button mushroom block aromatase, a protein linked to most breast cancers. In lab studies, mushroom extract slowed the growth of breast tumors.

Mushrooms have benefits for other forms of cancer as well.

Blueberries Tiny and tasty, blueberries may be more than nature’s candy. The latest findings indicate that blueberries could play a part in undoing a tough-to-treat type of breast cancer. One study indicates that blueberries may help halt the growth and spread of triple-negative breast cancer. This form of the disease is particularly

Apples We tend to take apples for granted. An apple a day may very well help to keep breast cancer away! Eat the peel of the apple for the added benefit of rich anti-oxidants, fiber and other compounds needed for anti-cancer nutrition.

Walnuts Walnuts contain many helpful nutrients and healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help the body fight cancer. Research also suggests that walnuts may actually slow the growth of breast tumors.

Flaxseed Flaxseed has a component called lignans that may have a role in decreasing cancer growth.

Spinach Pomegranate Salad • 1 (10 ounce) bag baby spinach leaves, rinsed and drained • 1/4 red onion, sliced very thin • 1/2 cup walnut pieces • 1/2 cup crumbled feta • 1/4 cup alfalfa sprouts (optional) • 1 pomegranate, peeled and seeds separated • 4 tablespoons balsamic vinaigrette Place spinach in a salad bowl. Top with red onion, walnuts, feta, and sprouts. Sprinkle pomegranate seeds over the top, and drizzle with vinaigrette.

Nothing could stop Angela Santopolo — not even breast cancer.

t the age of 32, Angela Santopolo was diagnosed with stage IIA cancer in her right breast following a routine visit with her gynecologist and her first mammogram. Her doctor gave her a list of breast cancer physicians she could follow up with who accepted her insurance, and she chose Dhvani Thakker, MD, Director of Women’s Medical Oncology at Mount Sinai South Nassau.

They met a few days later and set up a treatment plan tailored to Ms. Santopolo’s ambitious goals: to continue teaching fourth grade and earn her master’s degree in education on time. The plan included genetic testing to evaluate her for any underlying genetic mutation, cryopreservation of her eggs to preserve her ability to conceive, eight rounds of chemotherapy from September 2022 through January 2023, and surgery in February. Ms. Santopolo, of Queens, opted for a double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery.

Christine Hodyl, DO, Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Director of Breast Health Services, performed the mastectomies, which also included initial breast reconstruction with the insertion of temporary tissue expanders performed by plastic surgeon Anke Ott Young, MD. Ms. Santopolo visited Dr. Ott to have the expanders filled with saline every two weeks in preparation for more reconstructive surgery. On Aug. 24, Dr. Ott replaced the expanders with permanent breast implants.

Aside from absences for chemotherapy sessions and a six-week leave of absence following the mastectomy, Ms. Santopolo continued teaching and earned her master’s degree from Fordham University in May as planned. “I am blessed to have Dr. Thakker as my oncologist,” says Ms. Santopolo. “Even though it is a small thing, she will sit there and listen. She said to me, ‘How can you have cancer, go to work and grad school?’ She calls me her superstar.”

Scalp-Cooling Therapy to Combat Hair Loss for Breast Cancer Patients Unfortunately, Ms. Santopolo’s breast cancer journey included the distressing side effect of hair loss during chemotherapy. “I was completely bald—lost my eyebrows and eyelashes,” she said. “I felt depressed. All the things that made me feel beautiful, I lost.”

Mount Sinai South Nassau is now offering the DigniCap System to provide scalp-cooling therapy to eligible patients to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy and alleviate the negative influence it can have on their emotions and outlook.

Angela Santopolo continued teaching fourth grade and earned her master’s degree while battling breast cancer with the help of her care team at Mount Sinai South Nassau.

“We want to treat the whole patient and offering this service is part of our commitment to provide our patients with comprehensive and compassionate care,” said Dr. Thakker.

Scalp-cooling therapy is initiated prior to the start of each chemotherapy session. The system’s silicone cooling cap is placed snugly on the patient’s head.

Flexible lightweight tubing connects the cooling cap to a control unit that circulates chilled liquid through the tubing to the silicone cap, delivering controlled cooling to all areas of the scalp. This decreases blood flow through the scalp, limiting the amount of chemotherapy that reaches the hair follicles and reducing the risk of chemotherapy-induced hair loss.

Studies have shown that the system can prevent hair loss in 66.3 percent of patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy.

At Mount Sinai South Nassau, no patient will be denied scalp-cooling therapy due to cost concerns. As a result of the generosity of donors, including a portion of the money raised by the hospital’s 2023 annual golf outing, funds have been set aside to cover costs that are not covered by health insurance.

Like Dr. Hodyl, all Mount Sinai South Nassau’s breast surgeons use many different surgical techniques to treat breast cancer. Breast-conserving surgery includes advanced techniques to preserve healthy breast.
