a look into the

PAST

Bellmore, which can trace its beginnings back to 1643, was a farming and fishing community until fairly recently in its history. Known as both Newbridge and Smithville South, it officially became Bellmore in the late 1800s or early 1900s when the post office was established. The busy Long Island Rail Road station in the center of town made Bellmore a “commuter’s paradise” in the 1920s, and the population began to grow significantly. Amid the residential growth, however, there were still active farms as late as the 1960s. Bellmore is now a vibrant suburb, home to various schools, houses of worship and civic organizations. It is the gateway to Long Island’s beautiful beaches, parks and major roadways. (Source: Local History Department at the Bellmore Memorial Library)

The Nassau County Police Activity League, Bellmore Unit, is an organization formed over 60 years ago to benefit children, not only from our community but all surrounding communities. We strive, with the help of the Police Department, to develop children’s character to become fine productive adults in future years. The Bellmore PAL has many programs for all children from Pre School to Senior’s in High School. These programs help the children to learn sportsmanship, and develop athletic skills for future years. Many of our children have come back, as adults, to volunteer as coaches, commissioners or staff members. We need the help of the parents to volunteer in helping the activities we have for the children. By volunteering you not only help the children but also create a safer neighborhood. No doubt much has changed in the Bellmores over the years. What was once a sleepy farming and fishing community is now a frenetic suburb, full of mom-and-pop shops, top-notch schools and sprawling parks. Alison Frankel, president and founder of the South Bellmore Civic Association, said, “Bellmore is unique because we have so many family-owned businesses, which is rare these days. I love walking with the stroller around the block and passing beautiful homes on the water, while enjoying the bay breeze. “My favorite community event,” Frankel continued, “is the street fair and festival by the train station —— especially since it’s so dog-friendly.” The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores annually sponsors the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which is held in Bellmore Village, the community’s downtown, in September or October. Over the years, it has become the largest family street fair in Nassau County, annually attracting more than 100,000 fair-goers. See the Bellmore Chamber’s website or the Bellmore Herald Life for more details. Three school districts serve the community –– Bellmore, North Bellmore and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. The two elementary districts feed into the Central District. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District spent an average of $23,907 per student in 2016-17, compared to the statewide average of $23,370, according to the New York State Education Department. Ninetyfour to 98 percent of the district’s graduates attend college, compared with the state average of 78 percent. Marie Testa, superintendent of the North Bellmore School District, has lived in the community nearly her entire life. The Bellmores, she said, “have a small-town feel. We don’t have a lot of commercial businesses that other towns have. We have Bellmore Village as the heart of the community.” A big part of what makes the schools so great is the close partnership between teachers and students, Testa said. “The teachers love the students. It’s that simple,” she said. “They want the best for the children. It’s a very caring community.” Continued on next page

The superintendent added that Bellmorites are kind-hearted people. “It’s a safe neighborhood, warm, inviting, close-knit. It’s a homey place to be,” she said. The first records of the community that is now the Bellmores appeared in the mid- to late-1600s. It all began when a prominent farmer, John Smith, gave his son, Jeremiah, a land deed for 100 acres of salt marsh. The marsh provided a fine hay, ideal for raising cattle. Soon, people came from all around to lay claim and buy acreage on the marsh. Robert Bedell, another of Bellmore’s earliest settlers, moved to the community during the 1640s. He was among the more successful salt marsh farmers. The Bedell home, built by John Bedell, Robert’s son, still stands at Merrick Road and South Saint Marks Avenue. It has been declared an historical landmark. Another early pioneer was Thomas Southard, a farmer from what is now North Bellmore, who owned 200 acres of land in 1655. Southard’s home still sits by what is now the Southern State Parkway. It, too, has since been declared a landmark. In the late 1700s, George Washington marched through the community to decorate Revolutionary War heroes. As Washington made his way along Merrick Road, he noted the abundance of Bellmore’s salt grasses in his journal. Before Bellmore became Bellmore in the 1880s, the community was divided into two distinct neighborhoods. North Bellmore was known as Smithville South, and Bellmore was called New Bridge. In the 1860s, shortly after the Civil War, the Long Island Rail Road was built a few feet south of where the current trestle stands near Sunrise Highway. At the time, the community comprised mainly fishermen and farmers, who used the Long Island Rail Road to ferry their goods to market. The railroad unified the community. In fact, the Long Island Rail

Road renamed the Smithville-Newbridge region as Bellmore in the early 1880s. There are probably 150 stories as to how Bellmore got its name. According to local historians, Bellmore was likely given its moniker to connote “beautiful village.” Bellmore has had its fair share of notable talent. TV weather prognosticator Elliot “Storm” Field graduated from Mepham High School in 1966, and TV producer Roone Arledge in 1948. Actor George Kennedy lived in Bellmore and attended St. Barnabas Parochial School. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani lived in North Bellmore. And Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey also reportedly called Bellmore home at one time. Many famous Civil War veterans also lived in Bellmore, including Andrew Jackson Russell, who fought at Gettysburg and died in the 1930s. The WEAF Radio tower, which broadcasted from Maple Avenue in the 1930s, was an important landmark in Bellmore. Restaurants have always been a mainstay in Bellmore. The Bavarian Village on Sunrise Highway is a memorable piece of Bellmore history. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the German restaurant, a place remembered for “immense fun,” was often booked for weddings. Its cuisine attracted people from throughout the metropolitan area. It was later renamed Sunrise Village. McCluskey’s Steakhouse, which closed in 1995, was famous throughout the metropolitan area. Patrons from as far as New Jersey would venture to the eatery for its steak and fried onions. Trudie Cowen founded the Historical Society of the Bellmores in 1974, shortly before the community’s 300th anniversary. Today, the Bellmore/North Bellmore community, which is home to roughly 36,000 residents, stands as one of Nassau County’s finest communities. Bellmore Village, the restored “old-fashioned” downtown, now links Bellmore’s past with the present.

in Bellmore Village Bellmore’s downtown shopping district, on Bedford Avenue, just north of Sunrise Highway, harkens back to simpler times on Long Island. With charming brick-lined sidewalks, old-fashioned light posts and an abundance of family-owned businesses, strolling through Bellmore’s downtown, Bellmore Village, is a trip into Long Island’s past. The downtown has everything anyone could need for a day of food and entertainment right off of the Long Island Rail Road line. Dinner options range from Italian to Mediterranean, while several local cafés serve as the perfect stops for after-dinner treats. Bellmorites can then head to the Bellmore Playhouse on Bedford Avenue or the 108-year-old Bellmore Movies and Showcase on Pettit Avenue, next to the historic Bellmore Fire District headquarters, with a full stomach for a night of entertainment. Aside from the movies, local pubs and cafés regularly feature live music, and the Bellmore train station hosts a car show every Friday night. Once a year, Bedford Avenue is cordoned off for the street fair, complete with rides, games, vendors and even pony rides. When in the Brianna Casey/Herald Life mood for a quiet night, nothing beats a relaxing walk under the Antonella Linder, 2, sat patiently in line for the Easter Bunny in her light posts with friends and family. “convertible” at Bellmore’s Easter parade.

ewbridge Road Park, at 2600 Newbridge Road in Bellmore, features a variety of events and activities for the community. The park features an outdoor pool, an indoor ice skating rink, recreation courts and fields, and a dog park. The dog park is a recent addition. Opened in September 2016, it is the first dog-specific park opened by the Town of Hempstead. The park is open to residents with dog license and rabies vaccination tags for their pets. It features ramps, weave poles, hurdles and other activities for the dogs. Each summer, there are two concerts at the park open to residents for free. Local bands and tribute bands play. Park Supervisor Brian Dazzo said between 2,000 and 4,000 people attend the concerts, depending on the weather, each year. In addition to the concerts, another event is a kids show, which features a magician for small children. Kids can also attend summer recreation programs at the park. “We have a free summer recreation program,” Dazzo said. “It’s for kids ages 5 to 14. We have archery, arts and crafts, cheerleading, kickline dance team, street hockey and soccer.” The pool is open during the summer from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the indoor ice skating rink opens in the winter. The rink has been open for decades, and offers ice skating lessons, hockey clubs, public skating sessions, and is a venue for events like

birthday parties. The hill in the outdoor part of the park is also used for sledding in the winter. The other recreation courts include basketball, handball, tennis, softball, baseball fields, playgrounds, game tables, multi-purpose fields, play equipment, outdoor pools, indoor ice rink, horseshoes and a sitting area. Dazzo said that the park offers a lot for the community. “I think [the park] contributes a lot, it’s great. We have a lot of people here and we also have a dog park here. It’s a great place to come,” Dazzo said.

“The Young and Restless,” was born and raised in North Bellmore. Daryl Palumbo and Justin Beck, from the band Glassjaw, met in Bellmore, Palumbo’s hometown. The first settlers in Bellmore crossed the Long Island Sound from Connecticut in the mid-17th century. According to the Mepham High School Alumni Association, controversial, pioneering comedian Lenny Bruce went to elementary school in North Bellmore and spent some time at Mepham before volunteering for the Navy in 1942. At its creation, Bellmore was a fishing and farming community originally known as New Bridge, or Smithsville South. The North Bellmore Library is currently being renovated for the first time since 1968. Andrew Jackson Russell, a famous Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg and died in the 1930s, lived in Bellmore.

thousands of people take to Bellmore Village annually in September, as the streets are transformed into fairgrounds during the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores’ annual Family Street Festival. The scents of cotton candy and popcorn permeate the air throughout the festival’s 25 square blocks in Bellmore, near the Long Island Rail Road train station. Dozens of local organizations and businesses hold demonstrations and expos. The 2017 festival included a series of performances by local musicians sponsored by the Rock Underground, a zumba session sponsored by Crunch Gym and a wheelchair

basketball demo by the Nassau Kings team. The festival also features a carnival with high-thrill rides, a petting zoo, jewelry and art boutiques and dozens of food vendors. Guests can enjoy empanadas, turkey legs, sausage links and snacks like deep-fried Oreos, funnel cake, Italian ices and candy apples. While the festival takes months of preparation and patience, Peter Ray, the former president of the Chamber of Commerce, said that the most rewarding part is “watching families walk around with smiles on their faces.”

Libraries T

he Bellmore Memorial Library and the North Bellmore Public Library are both ingrained in the long history of the Bellmores and continue to serve as vital parts of the community. The Bellmore Memorial Library was organized by community members in 1948, when it was started in a single room of a wooden schoolhouse holding 150 books. More than 65 years later, Bellmore libraries are vibrant community centers that offer many activities for all ages of the Bellmores’ more than 35,000 residents. The North Bellmore Library is currently undergoing a significant expansion — its first real renovation since 1986, which will add 4,500 square feet of space to the library, including a new community room. The children’s library will nearly double in size. North Bellmore’s adult reference librarian, Frannie Cassano, was also named Romance Writers of America’s 2018 Librarian of the Year, for her work promoting the genre and helping patrons. Summer reading programs ensure that reading doesn’t take a break. The Bellmore libraries, along with the Merrick and North Merrick libraries, partnered for the sixth consecutive year in summer 2018 to provide opportunities for residents of all ages to enjoy the written word and socialize over their favorite books. Also, patrons can catch movie nights at the Bellmore Memorial Library all summer long, enjoy crafting days at the North Bellmore Library and join in many other activities and programs.

ellmore-Merrick’s five school districts — four elementary districts and one high school district — are consistently ranked among the top school systems in New York state, even the country, with an array of programs to nurture “the whole child.” The four elementary districts — Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick — feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, one of a few such central districts across the state. The Central High School District annually boasts a 94 to 99 percent graduation rate, with many students receiving acceptances to top-rated colleges across the country. Last year, Niche.com ranked the district among the Top 100 in the country. The elementary districts comprise three to five schools each. The Central High School District is made up of Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools. Each of the high schools offers advanced programs in the arts, business, engineering and science research. Magnet cosmetology and drama programs, which attract students from all three high schools, are housed at Calhoun. Additionally, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, an alternative high school housed at the Brookside School in North Merrick, offers a special program for students who are having trouble fitting into their home high schools.

North Bellmore School District teachers Susan Wells, left, and Danielle Kalinowski shared their love of reading and their favorite books with students for World Read Aloud Day.

After 11 years as the BMRTA president, Sharon Wisla was re-elected to the position at the association’s luncheon. The group met at Elisa’s Ristorante, her favorite local eatery.

Catching up with the Retired Teachers Association “We all come together again in Bellmore, and it feels like home,” Sharon Wisla, the current Bellmore-Merrick Retired Teachers Association president, told dozens of district retirees in May 2019. “There’s almost 50 people here — it’s exciting to see all my old colleagues and friends again.” The annual luncheon for BMRTA — an extension of the Bellmore-Merrick United Secondary Teachers Union — was a celebration of education, and thanks for the teachers’ devotion to the district. Retirees old and new filled the backroom of Elisa’s Ristorante in Bellmore, all representing the Central District throughout the decades. Also in attendance was Pat Christy, who helped establish the association 35 years ago, and past president Gerald Brynien. “It feels strange” to join the association, said Mark Steinberg, who joined the BMRTA after he retired from Grand Avenue Middle School. “It’ll hit me tonight that it’s really happening.” Steinberg, one of 14 retirees this year, has taught in the district for 35 years. For the past six, he was also the president of the teachers union. “These are the people you go to if you want to know the history of the district,” he added. “They tell us where the union started.” “Being a teacher is the best thing I could’ve done with my life,” said Daniel Shannon, a 20-year retiree. As a teacher, “I went to every graduation,” he added, “and they were the most bittersweet moments, always wonderful and sad at the same time.”

ach year, the Bellmore Kiwanis and Lions Clubs draw huge crowds and delight families and festival fans with the Strawberry Festival, held on the grounds of Nassau BOCES on Jerusalem Avenue. The venue brings a variety of carnival rides and live entertainment. Aside from the fresh strawberries being offered, vendors sell strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry daiquiris and many other strawberry-themed goodies.

The Kiwanis and Lions put together the annual festival in order to raise funds to help those less privileged in the community and across Long Island, and donate to international charities. Hundreds of Bellmore and Nassau County residents are waiting until the start of next summer for the return of the Strawberry Festival. As the event draws near, visit nassaucountystrawberryfest.com for entertainment and venue information and to download a coupon for the carnival rides.

The Bellmore Friday Night Car Show

ach summer, all summer, through Oct. 5, the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road parking lot is taken over every Friday night for a friendly and impressive classic car showcase, with the Bellmore Friday Night Car Show. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, the event puts more than 300 antique and custom cars on display, and gives people a chance to meet the owners and enjoy some nostalgia.

Many of the vehicles are true works of art that have been restored and customized by their owners — everyone is sure to have a blast. After enjoying the car show, visitors are encouraged to check out some of the best restaurants on Long Island, right in downtown Bellmore. Herald Life photographer Joe Abate was on-hand at a 2018 show to capture some of the models on display — and chat with some of the classic car owners.
