living in Bellmore No doubt, much has changed in the Bellmores over the years. What was once a sleepy farming and fishing community is now a frenetic suburb, full of mom-andpop shops, top-notch schools and sprawling parks. Alison Frankel, president and founder of the South Bellmore Civic Association, said, “Bellmore is unique because we have so many family-owned businesses, which is rare these days. I love walking with the stroller around the block and passing beautiful homes on the water, while enjoying the bay breeze. “My favorite community event,” Frankel continued, “is the street fair and festival by the train station —— especially since it’s so dog friendly.” The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores annually sponsors the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which is held in Bellmore Village, the community’s downtown, in September or October. Over the years, it has become the largest family street fair in Nassau County, annually attracting more than 100,000 fair-goers. See the Bellmore
Chamber’s website or the Bellmore Herald Life for more details. Three school districts serve the community –– Bellmore, North Bellmore and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. The two elementary districts feed into the Central District. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District spent an average of $23,907 per student in 2016-17, compared to the statewide average of $23,370, according to the New York State Education Department. Ninety-four to 98 percent of the district’s graduates attend college, compared with the state average of 78 percent. Marie Testa, superintendent of the North Bellmore School District, has lived in the community nearly her entire life. The Bellmores, she said, “have a small-town feel. We don’t have a lot of commercial businesses that other towns have. We have Bellmore Village as the heart of the community.” A big part of what makes the schools so great is the close partnership between teachers and students, Testa said. “The teachers love the

students. It’s that simple,” she said. “They want the best for the children. It’s a very caring community.” The superintendent added that Bellmorites are kind-hearted people. “It’s a safe neighborhood, warm, inviting, close-knit. It’s a homey place to be,” she said. The first records of the community that is now the Bellmores appeared in the mid- to late-1600s. It all began when a prominent farmer, John Smith, gave his son, Jeremiah, a land deed for 100 acres of salt marsh. The marsh provided a fine hay, ideal for raising cattle. Soon, people came from all around to lay claim and buy acreage on the marsh. Robert Bedell, another of Bellmore’s earliest settlers, moved to the community during the 1640s. He was among the more successful salt marsh farmers. The Bedell home, built by John Bedell, Robert’s son, still stands at Merrick Road and South Saint Marks Avenue. It has been declared an historical landmark. Another early pioneer was Thomas Southard, a farmer from what is now North Bellmore, who owned 200 acres of land in 1655. Southard’s home still sits by what is now the Southern State Parkway. It, too, has since been declared a landmark. In the late 1700s, George Washington marched through the community to decorate Revolutionary War heroes. As Washington made his way along Merrick Road, he noted the abundance of Bellmore’s salt grasses in his journal. Before Bellmore became Bellmore in the 1880s, the community was divided into two distinct neighborhoods. North Bellmore was known as Smithville South, and Bellmore was called New Bridge. In the 1860s, shortly after the Civil War, the Long Island Rail Road was built a few feet south of where the current trestle stands near Sunrise Highway. At the time, the community comprised mainly fishermen and farmers, who used the Long Island Rail Road to ferry their goods to market.

The railroad unified the community. In fact, the Long Island Rail Road renamed the Smithville-Newbridge region as Bellmore in the early 1880s. There are probably 150 stories as to how Bellmore got its name. According to local historians, Bellmore was likely given its moniker to connote “beautiful village.” Bellmore has had its fair share of notable talent. TV weather prognosticator Elliot “Storm” Field graduated from Mepham High School in 1966, and TV producer Roone Arledge in 1948. Actor George Kennedy lived in Bellmore and attended St. Barnabas Parochial School. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani lived in North Bellmore. And Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey also reportedly called Bellmore home at one time. Many famous Civil War veterans also lived in Bellmore, including Andrew Jackson Russell, who fought at Gettysburg and died in the 1930s. The WEAF Radio tower, which broadcasted from Maple Avenue in the 1930s, was an im-
portant landmark in Bellmore. Restaurants have always been a mainstay in Bellmore. The Bavarian Village on Sunrise Highway is a memorable piece of Bellmore history. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the German restaurant, a place remembered for “immense fun,” was often booked for weddings. Its cuisine attracted people from throughout the metropolitan area. It was later renamed Sunrise Village. McCluskey’s Steakhouse, which closed in 1995, was famous throughout the metropolitan area. Patrons from as far as New Jersey would venture to the eatery for its steak and fried onions. Trudie Cowen founded the Historical Society of the Bellmores in 1974, shortly before the community’s 300th anniversary. Today, the Bellmore/North Bellmore community, which is home to roughly 36,000 residents, stands as one of Nassau County’s finest communities. Bellmore Village, the restored “old-fashioned” downtown, now links Bellmore’s past with the present.

Ever wonder how solar energy first got started on Long Island? It began right in North
Bellmore when native son Dan Sabia installed the first 10-kilowatt residential solar-electric system on his own home back in 2001, when solar energy was unheard of. Fast forward 16 years, and Dan still serves as the very hands-on owner of the company he founded, Built Well Solar, which has since become a “Solar 500” firm, ranked one of the “Top 500 Solar Contractors in the United States” five years in a row and “Best of Long Island” award winner. Like most worthwhile endeavors, Built Well Solar came about out of a desire to help others. When the September 11th attack took place, Dan was called to serve. As a retired U.S. army officer with the rank of Major, he was called to Ground Zero following the collapse of the Twin Towers because of his expertise in nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. After witnessing the devastation, Dan realized there had to be less dependence on foreign oil, and recalled studying about solar energy in college, thinking that could be our nation’s answer. When he read his then-LIPA bill asking for “solar pioneers” he didn’t hesitate. The rest, as they say, is history. Not only did Dan use his 30 years of general contracting and facilities management experience and college degree in construction/architecture, but also studied solar energy systems engineering in order to install the solar energy system himself on his home. He went on to help friends and neighbors do the same, and oversaw the first solar energy installation on a Long Island school district, Carle Place, where he served as facilities director at that time. Soon thereafter taking early retirement, Dan’s focus became to assemble a company team that could expand solar energy across Long Island, helping homeowners and businesses to reduce and oftentimes eliminate those excessively high electric bills. Getting Involved The Bellmore Striders
Bellmore running enthusiasts can pound the pavement with Bellmore’s very own USA Track and Field Member Club, the Bellmore Striders Running Club. Since forming in 1976, the Striders have provided the opportunity to train and compete with Long Island’s best in road races, as well as track and field and cross country meets. Accomplished runner and Mepham High School alumnus Alex Cuozzo leads the group, which practices three times a week in locations that include Bellmore’s Mepham High School, Massapequa’s Greenbelt Trail, Bethpage State Park and Sunken Meadow State Park, depending on the season. While Striders vary by age group, the club serves as a particularly useful support structure for young athletes seeking to continue to improve and develop after college, according to the Striders. Every summer, the Striders host an Independence Day Four-Mile Run dedicated to the memory of Mepham High School alumnus and former Strider Matthew Warkala, who died after a battle with brain cancer. The race weaves

through the streets of downtown Bellmore, and attracts runners from across the country. In addition to the four-mile race, there is also a one-mile fun run for children ages 12
and younger. Now in its 34th year, the Independence Day Run has become one of the most beloved summer traditions for the Bellmore-Merrick community.

For young athletes, there are plenty of options in Bellmore-Merrick to have fun and compete. The North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League offers children and teenagers of all skill levels the opportunity to take part in America’s national pastime, from T-ball through middle school. Boys and girls ages 4 to 14 are eligible to play, with baseball and softball fields located in Bellmore and Merrick. The Bellmore-North Bellmore and Merrick units of the Nassau County Police Activity League (PAL) are also great outlets for budding athletes. Merrick offers the opportunity to play soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and judo, while Bellmore-North Bellmore offers base-
ball, softball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, golf and track. With leagues, clinics, and summer programs, young Bellmore-Merrick athletes can enjoy PAL sports throughout the year. Programs range from peewee ball for children 3½ years old to travel teams for 19-year -olds. Merrick’s Sacred Heart Church, on Merrick Avenue just south of the Southern State Parkway and Curé of Ars Church, on Merrick Avenue between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road, both offer Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) programs for children of all ages. Sports include basketball, soccer, track, volleyball and swimming, with programs ranging from leagues, clinics and tournaments throughout the year. Children ages 5 to 18 are eligible to participate.

ellmore-Merrick’s five school districts –– four elementary districts and one high school district –– are consistently ranked among the top school systems in New York state, even the country, with an array of programs to nurture “the whole child.” The four elementary districts –– Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick –– feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, one of a few such central districts across the state. The Central High School District annually boasts a 98 to 99 percent graduation rate, with many students receiving acceptances to top-rated colleges across the country. The elementary districts comprise three to five schools each. The Central High School District is made up of Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools. Each of the high schools offers advanced programs in the arts, business, engineering and science research. Magnet cosmetology and drama programs, which attract students from all three high schools, are housed at Calhoun. Additionally, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, an alternative high school housed at the Brookside School in North Merrick, offers a special program for students who are having trouble fitting into their home high schools.

Out and About Jones Beach State Park
Nearby Jones Beach State Park is not only famous on Long Island, but also throughout the nation. The park, on Jones Beach Island, directly south of Merrick and Bellmore, features 6.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, renowned for their fine white sand. The Ocean Parkway, with its breathtaking views of the Atlantic, is easily accessible from the Meadowbrook or Wantagh parkways. Families and friends can swim and play in the waves under the vigilant eyes of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps, while small children can take advantage of Zach’s Bay for calmer, shallower waters. Surfers, stand-up paddle boarders and wind-surfers can also enjoy the waves at several locations along the beach. For those seeking a quiet day of fishing, piers and bait-and-tackle shops are readily available. On the world-famous boardwalk, visitors can grab a bite at one of the many restaurants and concession stands, or have some fun by playing miniature golf, shuffleboard, basketball, tennis or handball. There’s also bicycling on the Wantagh Parkway bike trail, which passes through Jones Beach by the Nikon at Jones Beach amphitheater, on the way to the Ocean Parkway bike trail. Cycling is also permitted on the Jones Beach boardwalk, except in summer. The boardwalk’s bandshell offers free music, magic, dancing and movies every week. The Nikon amphitheater regularly attracts the biggest names in the music industry for its summer concert series, and has also hosted notable music festivals, including the Vans

Warped Tour and the Laid Back Festival. Music lovers can head to the amphitheater to enjoy their favorite bands in front of a breathtaking backdrop of the sun setting over one of the country’s most cherished summer getaways. The park’s Theodore Roos-
evelt Nature Center is another fun and educational way for children to spend the day at Jones Beach. The center offers group and guided tours for kids to feel live marine animals and plants, dig up whalebones, explore a butterfly garden and even see a shipwreck.
Levy Preserve, one of Merrick’s gems
Among Merrick’s crown jewels is the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, off Merrick Road in south Merrick. The park, a permanently preserved nature sanctuary, is thick with maple, oak and ailanthus trees. Phragmites line the canals surrounding the preserve, which looks out on Merrick Bay to the east and wetlands to the west. An osprey-nesting station, a large platform atop an immense pole, sits amid a mudflat at the park’s southern tip. Swallows and red-winged blackbirds flit through the trees and underbrush. Opossums, raccoons and red foxes also make their homes at the preserve. Park-goers can hike or run over three miles of seashell-coated paths, or kayak from a launch on the Meadow Brook, which runs along the preserve’s west side. Bicycling is not allowed at the park. The town uses Nigerian dwarf goats to control weeds. The shuttles that transport park-goers from the front parking lot to a 500-foot-long fishing pier are solar-powered. “In Hempstead Town, we are extremely proud of our ecological success story,” said former Supervisor Kate Murray, who perpetually preserved the park for future generations. “We are thrilled to showcase Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve to other governments who might be considering similar projects.”

Out and About Newbridge Road Park and Pool
A trip to the Newbridge Road Park and Pool is a great way for friends and families to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. The park has something for everyone in the family, with expansive grass fields, baseball and softball diamonds, basketball, handball, and tennis courts, game tables, horseshoes, sitting areas and a large playground. For those looking to escape the summer heat, the outdoor pool is perfect for both casual and competitive swimmers, offering both summer-long memberships and single-day passes. In addition to the main pool, there is also a kiddie pool and a diving pool available. After a dip, there are plenty of chairs available to sunbathe, as well as a food vendor to grab a bite. And if you really need a cooling off, the indoor ice rink is located next to the pool. In addition to public skate, the rink also offers private and team lessons in both figure and hockey skating.

T he Town of Hempstead’s Bellmore Senior Center, at 2000 Bellmore Ave., offers an array of activities for older adults, from painting to mah jongg, bingo and shuffleboard. Center members, in fact, can compete in a shuffleboard league with other town senior centers. Writing classes are offered through the Merrick Senior Center’s Creative Writing Program, sponsored by Poets & Writers and the Town of Hempstead. Acclaimed writer Paula Rodenas teaches the 16-week workshop. Participants cap off the experience by reading their work at the Merrick Theatre and Centre for the Arts in down-

Government
nassau CounTy Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms. The county executive — currently Republican Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently George Maragos; district attorney, Madeline Singas; and a county clerk, Maureen O'Connell.

Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
