he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores is pleased to provide you with this handy guide, which is filled with helpful information. The guide lists the nearly 300 members of the Chamber of Commerce who are committed to making our community a great place to live. In their 325-year history, the communities of the Bellmores have grown with a population exceeding that of many cities in the country. The South Shore, with numerous canals and excellent waterways, is an asset to boat owners and fishermen. The community boasts a vibrant and growing business community, along with one of the finest education systems in the state. The Chamber of Commerce gives back to community throughout the year. In early spring, there is the Easter parade, where about 300 children from our area bring their parents for a day of fun in Bellmore Village –– shopping local merchants and receiving free treats. May starts our ever-popular Friday Night Car Show, where more than 400 car owners display their wonderful restored cars from yesterday. Visitors are allowed to view the car show and then stroll down beautiful Bedford Avenue or enjoy a meal in one of our fabulous eateries. In late September or October, we host Nassau County’s largest family-oriented event of its kind, the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which hosts an estimated 120,000-plus visitors. In the fall, there is the Halloween parade, where another 400 children in costume come to town to parade and trick-or-treat the merchants who provide treats. The Santa run takes place the day after Thanksgiving. The chamber brings Santa throughout the Bellmores on a fire truck. The chamber then presents Santa and a free movie to the children at the Bellmore Theater, to the delight of hundreds of families. Our Christmas tree lighting and holiday extravaganza bring horse-drawn carriages and an old-time trolley to the heart of the village. More than 500 families come out to enjoy the holiday spirit. The last event of the year is the annual menorah lighting, which brings together the community to celebrate the festival of lights. Traveling in and around the Bellmores you will notice the chamber’s commitment to beautification and enhancement. Our downtown boasts award-winning revitalization designs, featuring updated architecture and facade improvements that provide an old-fashioned shopping village experience. Our beautiful 9-11 Memorial Park at the North Bellmore Library and the Veterans Memorial Park in Bellmore Village are adorned with seasonal flowers and provide a place for private reflection. The chamber is also pleased to have a strong working relationship with all our elected officials from the town, county and state. Rounding out our partnership is our dedicated police, fire, auxiliary police and emergency medical providers. We rely on them for so much and are very grateful for all their support. We ask you to support your local businesses by shopping locally and helping make the business community prosper and flourish. We look forward to sharing our wonderful community events with you and to keeping the chamber and community partnership thriving.

He has served in various capacities on the chamber's Board of Directors since 1991 and has been vice president for more than 10 years. He has coordinated the Crafts Fair at the Bellmore Family Street Festival for a number of years. Bill built and sets up each year the menorah for the annual village holiday display. He continues to actively participate in chamber activities, including ribbon cuttings, beautification, parades and the annual Santa visit, and maintains the chamber sign, shadow boxes and surrounding planting area. Bill was the recipient of the NCCC 2002 Small Business Person of the Year Award. After earning an associate's degree in construction technology from SUNY Farmingdale, Bill served on their Alumni Board of Directors for eight years and ran the annual Homecoming event. Her prior experience includes corporate and agency strategic planning for the promotion of retail consumer goods. Jill has held the position of marketing manager at Springs Home Furnishings and Kraft as well as group director of Rowland Promotion and Design, a promotions division of Saatchi and Saatchi specializing in grass-roots promotions and marketing

GENE JUDD, TREASURER Gene Judd - Island Greenery - Gene was born and raised in Merrick where he, like many others in his profession, began cutting lawns for the neighbors. At an early age it was clear that Gene was a natural entrepreneur. This quickly turned into a business and became a full-time job after high school. Gene was the owner/ operator of Royal Landscaping, which serviced properties in Merrick, Bellmore and Wantagh. In 2002, Gene purchased Island Greenery, on Grand Avenue in Bellmore Village. Island Greenery was in desperate need of renovations and TLC. After completing the necessary renovations, Island Greenery quickly evolved into a full-service nursery offering a wide variety of annual and perennial flowers, trees and shrubs. Services included weekly maintenance, landscape design and installation; later on, a masonry division was added to complement the landscape design service. Island Greenery’s employees included local students and retirees alike. After nine years of growth, Gene felt Island Greenery had outgrown its location and needed to expand. After discovering a local property for sale, he decided to make the move. Island Greenery’s new home is at Bellmore Avenue and Oak Street; the property is 25,000 square feet, more than doubling the original location. The move has enabled Gene to provide his clients with a much greater plant selection and additional services. Since the original purchase of Island Greenery, Gene has been active in the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores. Later, he became a board member and contributor to many events (such as the Bellmore Street Fair and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting). Gene has also been a member of the Knights of Columbus for the past 23 years and is currently the vice president of the Bellmore Lions Club. Gene was recently honored by the Bellmore Republican Club for his continued support.

BRUCE DETZEL Bruce Detzel - Stop & Shop - was born in Queens and raised on Long Island. Bruce has kept his roots on Long Island and currently resides in Selden, with his three beautiful daughters. He attended Queens College for two years and was in the military for two years. Bruce has been in retail for 27 years. For the past eight years, he has been the store manager of the Bellmore Stop & Shop, which employees more than 180 people. Stop & Shop takes great pride in being part of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores and working with the community.

STEVE EPLAN Steve Eplan, owner of The Rock Underground -- an innovative performance-based school of rock music -- has been a lifelong resident of the Bellmore-Merrick area. local basketball team, and a small business owner, Steven, his wife and three children have been solid contributors to the South Shore community and Bellmore Village. As it began, Steven owned the building at Bedford Avenue and Fredericks Street where he ran his successful mortgage business Perry Funding. As he saw the village slowly morph into a more cohesive and interesting weave of restaurants, specialty shops and boutiques, his desire to pursue a passion for music, which he shared with his children and siblings; all musicians, increased and culminated with the timely move of his longtime tenant Exclusive Kitchens. With this development in early 2010, he saw his opening. It had been some time that Steven had been working with and presenting his own kids’ bands as they played summer street fairs and benefits throughout the Island. Having had some experience with music schools and as a guitar student himself, he decided to convert his hobby into a full-blown school with the help of his two music partners: Paul Casanova and Billy Handy Jr. To Steve, this was a logical step in the fulfillment of a vision for Bellmore Village, with its dance schools, theaters and eateries. As Steven says, “If you look at Bedford Avenue on a weekend, weekday afternoon or summer night, kids, tweens and young adults descend on this area and bring a lot of energy that could be turned into a positive and creative force for this district. The combined resources and enthusiasm of our next generations of students, families and consumers who patronize our small economy will have a positive economic impact on the village’s small-business owners. I hope my contributions to our community will serve a lasting purpose economically, culturally, and educationally." Steven is honored to be welcomed to the Chamber of Commerce as a highly motivated member, looking forward to organizing and sponsoring the music portion of the Bellmore Street Fair (among other projects), and working to make our streets safe through increased security technology.

HECTOR GRANADOS Hector Granados - Owner of Bedford Delicatessen & Caterers - Hector and his wife, Jesmy, have been married for 10 years and have three beautiful children. He owns the Bedford Delicatessen and Caterers, at 105 Bedford Ave., and has been in the delicatessen business for nine years. About 15 years ago, Hector moved to Bellmore and started working at Blossom Farms on Bedford Avenue. He was also a catering manager in East Meadow; he was very interested in catering events and found his passion in the world of gastronomy, so he decided to have his own delicatessen and catering business. It has been a very successful experience. Hector is a member of the Lions Club in Bellmore and participates in the Strawberry Festival (organized by the Bellmore Lions and Kiwanis Clubs). He is also an extraordinary minister at the Holy Redeemer Church and volunteers for the breakfast with Santa at the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Regional Catholic School. Hector loves to help people, play with his kids, cook, and most importantly, enjoy time with his family.

KEVIN MACKINNON Kevin MacKinnon - Bellmore Bean Café. Kevin has been a

Bellmore resident for the past 17 years. He has three daughters, two of whom are married with three beautiful grandchildren. Kevin retired from Yellow Freight after 35 years. Having a great pension, he was able to take a year of traveling to visit his two daughters who live out-of-state as well as indulge in a vacation here and there. As a proud Bellmore resident, he felt the need to get more involved in the community. Not only did he join the Bellmore Lions Club, but he also decided to join the Chamber of Commerce, which he heard nothing but great things about. Kevin is not one to take a back seat. He is always looking for a challenge; therefore, he got more involved and asked to be on the chamber's Board of Directors. Kevin works on many chamber committees and is co-chairman of the successful Friday Night Car Show.

EMILIO MANZO Emilio Manzo - Community Wellness Council. Emilio has lived in Bellmore for 53 years. He is the president of the Community Wellness Council of Bellmore and Merrick. Emilio has served on the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores' Board of Directors for 17 years. In that time, he was involved with many committees and has been a part of the Street Fair for 20 years. Emilio’s participation has been instrumental in the annual Marine Corps' Toys for Tots drive. Emilio has also helped the town with its holiday events for children and has headed golf events to help chamber fundraising.

MARC MENZIES Marc Menzies, Overview Computers, Inc., was born and raised in Levittown. In 2003, his father, Dr. Gerard H Menzies, decided to open a dental practice in North Bellmore. Faced with the challenges of opening a new business, Dr. Menzies enlisted the help of his son (then 14 year old) to research, purchase and install an office network infrastructure as well as a server and two client PCs. Marc was also responsible for the configuration of the practice's management software. A couple years later, he was trained as a dental assistant and still helps his father every Sunday. After graduating from Island Trees High School in 2006, Marc went on to study physics at Stony Brook University for two years before deciding to take a different path. It was after realizing that he had been assisting friends and family (and some small businesses) with computers for years that he knew where his passion truly lies. Marc opened up Overview Computer Services, LLC in January 2010 and started to lease an office in the same professional building where his father practices dentistry. Overview deals in all kinds of computer service and repairs and specializes in IT work for small- and medium-size businesses. Overview takes care of over a dozen dental practices in the New York area. When not working with the frustrations of the IT world, Marc spends his time with his friends and family and enjoys long walks on the beach.

JIM MONIODES After closing his display company of 20 years, Jimmy and his wife, Nancy, decided to use Nancy’s baking prowess and in 2010 opened their Cupcake Store in Bellmore (originally Continued on next page

Now, three years later, Jimmy and “Nancy, The Cupcake Lady!” have enjoyed many celebrations! From being voted “Best Retailer/Bakery in Bellmore” to “Chamber Members of the Year," and being visited by Theresa Caputo (The Long Island Medium) to their Annual Cupcake Eating Contests, and all the countless citations and “thank-yous” they receive from their wonderful customers, neighbors, friends and organizations that tell them daily that they’re doing something right! “It’s hard not to smile while eating a cupcake!”

He is the father of seven and grandfather of 11, and owns AG Electrical Supply Company, at 2751 Grand Ave. in Bellmore. Peter has been in the electrical supply business for 52 years. A number of years ago, Peter and his son organized the Mt. Sinai High School hockey organization. He also coached PAL hockey and Island Trees baseball for four years. Peter was a swim coach for the Levittown Swimming Association for about 10 years and was on the Board of Supervisors for three. Though he recently gave up coaching, he’s still involved in the organization in other capacities. For 12 years, Peter was on the Island Trees Board of Education (for two years, he was president). Peter is an involved member of Levittown Kiwanis and

was honored to be distinguished president for two years. For the last six years, Peter and his wife have volunteered to help at the tree lighting in the village. They also helped at the Friday Night Car Show this past summer. Peter is honored to be asked to serve as a director for the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce. He believes in supporting the local merchants.

JOE VERDI Joe Verdi – Owner of Income Tax Plus. Joe started as a multistate tax accountant with Avis Rent-A-Car. In the early 1980s, while regional manager for a computerized tax preparation firm, he saw the need for a tax professional who understood investment products. He also saw the need for an investment professional who knew tax law and ways to serve the needs of his clients. In 1984, he opened Income Tax Plus in North Bellmore to meet both needs. In 2000, the company moved to its present quarters at 1725 Bellmore Ave. He has been a chamber member since 1986 and served as treasurer for years. He has served on most committees, including advertising, street festival and events, and is chairman of the successful Friday Night Car Show. He has served as their representative to the chamber since 2011. Dan first became involved with the chamber in 2008, when he was working for Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg. Since then, Dan has gotten more involved, helping out with many events. In 2010, he joined the Street Festival Committee, serving as co-chairman of the Military Zone for the last three years, as well as vice chairman of the Sports Expo in 2012. In 2011, he joined the Friday Night Car Show Committee, volunteering his Friday nights most weeks to help run the show. Dan looks forward to continuing his work on the board and his service to the community.

The Bellmore Striders running club’s Fourth of July four-mile run annually attracts a crowd. No doubt, much has changed in the Bellmores over the years. What was once a sleepy farming and fishing community is now a frenetic suburb, full of mom-and-pop shops, topnotch schools and sprawling parks. Alison Frankel, president and founder of the South Bellmore Civic Association, said, "Bellmore is unique because we have so many family-owned businesses, which is rare these days. I love walking with the stroller around the block and passing beautiful homes on the water, while enjoying the bay breeze. "My favorite community event," Frankel continued, "is the street fair and festival by the train station –– especially since it's so dog friendly" The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores annually sponsors the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which is held in Bellmore Village, the community's downtown, in September or October. Over the years, it has become the largest family street fair in Nassau County, annually attracting more than 100,000 fair-goers. Three school districts serve the community –– Bellmore, North Bellmore and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. The two elementary districts feed into the Central District. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District spends $13,000 on a typical student, compared to the state average of $10,963. Ninety-four percent of the district’s graduates attend college, compared with the state average of 74 percent. Marie Testa, superintendent of the North Bellmore School District, has lived in the community nearly her entire life. The

Bellmores, she said, "have a small-town feel. We don't have a lot of commercial businesses that other towns have. We have Bellmore Village as the heart of the community." A big part of what makes the schools so great is the close partnership between teachers and students, Testa said. "The teachers love the students. It's that simple," she aid. "They want the best for the children. It's a very caring community." The superintendent added that Bellmorites are kind-hearted people. "It's a safe neighborhood, warm, inviting, close-knit. It's a homey place to be," she said. The first records of the community that is now the Bellmores appeared in the mid- to late-1600s. It all began when a prominent farmer, John Smith, gave his son, Jeremiah, a land deed for 100 acres of salt marsh. The marsh provided a fine hay, ideal for raising cattle. Soon, people came from all around to lay claim and buy acreage on the marsh. Robert Bedell, another of Bellmore’s earliest settlers, moved to the community during the 1640s. He was among the more successful salt marsh farmers. The Bedell home, built by John Bedell, Robert’s son, still stands at Merrick Road and South Saint Marks Avenue. It has been declared an historical landmark. Another early pioneer was Thomas Southard, a farmer from what is now North Bellmore, who owned 200 acres of land in 1655. Southard’s home still sits by what is now the Southern State Parkway. It, too, has since been declared a landmark. In the late 1700s, George Washington marched through Continued on page 16

LIVING IN BELLMORE Continued from page 14

the community to decorate Revolutionary War heroes. As Washington made his way along Merrick Road, he noted the abundance of Bellmore’s salt grasses in his journal. Before Bellmore became Bellmore in the 1880s, the community was divided into two distinct neighborhoods. North Bellmore was known as Smithville South, and Bellmore was called New Bridge. In the 1860s, shortly after the Civil War, the Long Island Rail Road was built a few feet south of where the current trestle stands near Sunrise Highway. At the time, the community comprised mainly fishermen and farmers, who used the Long Island Rail Road to ferry their goods to market. The railroad unified the community. In fact, the Long Island Rail Road renamed the Smithville-Newbridge region as Bellmore in the early 1880s. There are probably 150 stories as to how Bellmore got its name. According to local historians, Bellmore was likely given its moniker to connote “beautiful village.” Bellmore has had its fair share of notable talent. TV weather prognosticator Elliot “Storm” Field graduated from Mepham High School in 1966, and TV producer Roone Arledge in 1948. Actor George Kennedy lived in Bellmore and attended St. Barnabas Parochial School. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani lived in North Bellmore. And Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey also called Bellmore home at one time. Many famous Civil War veterans also lived in Bellmore, including Andrew Jackson Russell, who fought at Gettysburg and died during the 1930s. The WEAF Radio tower, which broadcasted from Maple Avenue in the 1930s, was an important landmark in Bellmore. Restaurants have always been a mainstay in Bellmore. The Bavarian Village on Sunrise Highway is a memorable piece of Bellmore history. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the German restaurant, a place remembered for “immense fun,” was often booked for weddings. Its cuisine attracted people from throughout the metropolitan area. It was later renamed Sunrise

Services at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Bellmore. Village. McCluskey’s Steakhouse, which closed in 1995, was famous throughout the metropolitan area. Patrons from as far as New Jersey would venture to the eatery for its steak and fried onions. Trudie Cowen founded the Historical Society of the Bellmores in 1974, shortly before the community’s 300th anniversary. Today, the Bellmore/North Bellmore community, which is home to roughly 36,000 residents, stands as one of Nassau County’s finest communities. Bellmore Village, the restored “old-fashioned” downtown, now links Bellmore’s past with the present. The Bellmore Herald wishes to thank Clarence Anspake, a member of the Historical Society of the Bellmores, for his help in compiling this history. TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dr. Gerard H. Menzies’s dental practice in North Bellmore. Menzies is a 1986 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson Dental School who has dedicated himself to dentistry for the past 27 years. Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, left, congratulated the dentist for reaching the milestone with chamber members and the doctor’s friends.
