BALDWIN Bruins ready to defend crown

he expectations at Baldwin are lofty, and that’s to be expected for a boys’ basketball team that not only won last season’s Nassau Class AA title but also owns a 69-1 mark in its last 70 conference battles, including 33 straight wins. If the Bruins win three more Conference AA-II in a row to open the 2015-16 campaign, they will tie the record of 36 the program set three years ago. “We’re young but we have a lot of talent,” head coach Darius Burton said. Baldwin’s roster of 15 includes just five seniors, with the rest of the depth chart rounded out by a large, talented junior class. Among the returnees, the only starter back in the lineup is senior shooting guard Shane Gatling, already a two-time All-County honoree. “He’s a leader on and off the court,” Burton said. “He can fill it up, shoot from anywhere and get to the rim.” Junior Jared Rhoden returns after earning All-Conference honors and at 6-foot-4 poses a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses up front. He can not only handle the ball well but also stretch the floor with his outside jumper or post up in the paint. Senior Justin Caldwell saw minutes in the post as a backup last season but will have a larger role and is expected to control the paint with his 6-6 frame, strong rebounding and shot-blocking skills and soft shooting touch. Junior Zion Stephens also returns at forward. Junior Jabeon Bivens has been elevated to the starting role at point guard, and he’ll get additional support on both ends of the floor from junior Elijah Bovel, the leading scor6 — December 17, 2015

A trio of transfers — senior Darrell Rose, a 6-5 forward, senior point guard Deayande Wiles, and junior Norman Wilson, an All-Conference honoree last season with Long Beach. Senior Taj Thorpe adds even more energy to a Baldwin team that thrives on forcing the action at both ends of the floor.

Lady Bruins reloaded, set to defend title Baldwin’s on been on quite a tear on the hardwood, winning five of the last six Nassau Class AA girls’ basketball titles, including the last two in a row. The loss of three starters might put a big dent in the lineup of most teams, but for the Lady Bruins, it provides an opportunity for another wave of talented players to leave their imprintt on the program. Sophomore Azia Hudson, the team’s leading scorer, wass named the Class AA Player of the Year and returns along g with senior Lames ElGammal, a fifth-year varsity player and All-County honoree who could be the most well-rounded post player in Nassau. She enters the season with an improved jumperr to go along with an excellent game around the rim and is the perfect complement to Hudson, who can get to the hoop. “She’s a tremendous athlete and slasher,” head coach Tom Catapano said of Hudson. “Her first step and ability to get to the rim and finish [is tough to guard].” ElGammal is the only true frontcourt player in the starting lineup, and Baldwin’s going to continue pushing the pace on both ends of the floor with freshman Kaia Har-

CALHOUN Tempo will reflect Colts’ skills

ith a changeover on the roster, Calhoun’s going to change up its tempo in an effort to boost its offensive production on the court. “We have some skilled players and some pretty good athletes,” head coach Jay Kreutzberger said. “We’re going to be running an offense more suited to their skills.“ The lineup will at times consist of four guards, which in itself leads to getting out into transition. Senior Brian Hendrickson is one of several Calhoun players with a nonstop motor, and he also excels on the defensive side of the floor, another area where the Colts hope to force the action. “We [want to] extend the pressure, trap and hopefully run the floor more,” Kreutzberger said. Senior Connor Hannon will run the point, but as much as he will look to set up teammates, he’s just as good at finding his own shot and scoring from the perimeter. Senior Ray Moore has developed his game and could take on a bigger role as the starting off-guard. Junior Nick Strezenec provides the Colts with physical strength at center. Junior Patrick Gardner, meanwhile, has grown nearly four inches since last season and at 6-foot, 5-inches, is now working on a low-post game to go with his strong perimeter shooting. “He’s a good shooter but is able to attack more than last year,” Kreutzberger said. “He’s able to get up to the rim, and he’ll be more of a presence on the offensive glass.” Given the pace Calhoun looks to play at, Kreutzberger would ideally lean on his bench for quality minutes. 8 — December 17, 2015

Senior Rob Backus, a firsttime varsity player, and junior Daniel Schmitz, are both strong defenders who can shoot three pointers, while classmate Thomas Cummings is a slasher who can get to the hoop. Sophomore Kevin Hannon is vying for time at point guard, and Jalen Rosemond, a 6-5 sophomore, could provide depth up front. Corey Jones and Benjamin Kovel are the first freshman to play at the varsity level for the Colts during Kreutzberger’s nine-season tenure.

Lady Colts off and running With a pair of returning All-Conference seniors and a balance of experienced and incoming players, Calhoun is going to push the pace in coach Pete Magnuson’s first season on the sidelines. The Lady Colts are hoping the change in tempo will boost the program’s win total in Conference AA-III. “We’re definitely going to pressure the ball a lot and challenge every time it [is brought] up the court,” Magh nuson said. “We want to push it and play good man-to-man defense.” Returning in the backcourt is senior point guard Dana Brown, a speedy ballhandler who’s quick in transition and the perfect player to handle the new scheme. Sophomore Chris Argentieri has a smooth, well-rounded game and is expected to contribute at the point, and senior Angelina Theodores is also in the mix for playing time. Senior Lauren Hilke and sophomore Lauren Pitti, another athletic newcomer with a strong motor, are battling for minutes. “We’re trying to figure out our identity and getting to play fast,” Magnuson said.

CAREY Young talent to lead Seahawks BY ANDREW MCCLURE

arey has made backto-back appearances in the Nassau Class A Final Four despite being in the bottom half of the playoff bracket in each season. A talented, but young, team will but take the floor for the Seahawks in 2015-16. Carey will compete in Conference A-1 with Elmont, Sewanhaka, Bellmore JFK, Great Neck North, Jericho, Manhasset, and Garden City. Like the past two seasons, head coach Marty Kelly believes him team will get better as the year goes along, and could be a dangerous opponent come playoff time in February. “We’re young and we’re dealing with some injuries,” Kelly said. “It’s going to take some time to get to where I believe we can get, but we could be a dangerous team. I think we’re going to shoot the ball pretty well. The young guys need some seasoning, and we need to get healthy.” Point guard Mike Catanese, an All-County honoree as a junior, is the team’s go-to player. Catanese has terrific court sense, a solid mid-range jumper, and excellent leaping ability. Catanese, a three-year varsity player, is nursing a knee injury, but Kelly hopes to have him back in January. With injuries keeping others off the court, a pair of talented sophomores will take on big roles in the backcourt for Carey. Jeremy Pulle, a fleet-footed guard who runs the floor well and can bury shots from the perimeter, and T.J. Orlandino, a hardworking guard/forward who can catch and shoot real well, are a big part of the present and future. Six-foot-4 junior Matthew Gonzalez is a solid addition 10 — December 17, 2015

Anthony Catapano moves well for a big man, and should easily have more brute strength than anyone in the conference. 6-foot-4 senior Sean Engel, who battled injuries last season, rebounds well. Sophomore Frank Porcasi brings tremendous upside. Porcasi has a strong midrange game and is good around the basket. Sophomore Jonathan Francois will also be in the rotation and contribute.

Rebuilding year for Lady Seahawks The Lady Seahawks are coming off a season that saw them qualify for the Class A playoffs for the second straight year, and nearly upset a Floral Park team that went to the county semifinals. Making it to the postseason in 2015-16 will be a chore. Carey lost four-time All-County guard Victoria Porcasi, who scored more than 1,000 points for her career, and about 75 percent of its scoring to graduation. In a challenging league that includes the likes of Elmont, Sewanhaka, Manhasset, and g Garden City, finishing among the top four in the conferencee or obtaining a .500 record to qualify for the playoffs will not be easy. Head coach Theresa Schmidt knows she’s in a rebuilding stage, but she still has her eyes on the playoffs. “There are going to be some tough times, because we lost so much scoring,” Schmidt said. “Some of the girls who aren’t used to being asked to score are going to need to step up and be more offensiveminded. The goal is to be one of the top four in the conference.” Senior captain Brett Robison will be one of those

CLARKE Rams feature a different look

successful fall campaign on the hardwood has given Clarke not only a head of steam, but hope that it’s starting to turn the corner in Conference A-IV. The Rams are led by senior returnee Christian Hernandez, a 6-3 forward who was their leading scorer last season, Hernandez also led the way with more than a dozen rebounds per game and can pile up points from anywhere on the floor. “Last year we held [teams] down,” head coach Dan Reece said. “We were slow and grinded. This year we’re more athletic, faster and we can score the ball a little more. “We’ll be more willing to get out in the open floor.” The versatility of Hernandez won’t go unnoticed by defenses, even as the senior steps into a bigger role that will include shooting threepointers and driving to the hoop. Senior Brandon Oliva is slated to see consistent minutes at small forward and like Hernandez is a leader. Senior shooting guard Jason Ferreira is quick and will help spread the floor with his outside jumper. The point will be run by senior Hashen Pointdexter, who saw increased time as last season wore on. Quick with the ball and a strong distributor, Pointdexter is also a tenacious defender. Junior Jimmy Posillico is expected to log time in the backcourt along with classmate Austin Widing, another potential scoring threat. “Both point guards can distribute well and can drive [to the hoop],” Reece said. “We’re hoping Jason [Ferreira] can be a second scoring punch and help spread the floor.” 12 — December 17, 2015

In the low post, sophomore Kyle Kandel provides a bruising, physical presence in the low post and could catch defenses of guard with his quickness. Junior Eric Fathue is another physical forward who’ll play alongside Kandel and give Clarke productive minutes in the paint. “This year we can go 10 deep for sure,” Reece said. “The junior class is a nice mix with the seniors. The kids have jelled well, and they’re very excited and focused.”

Lady Rams bring new faces on board Clarke has a large sophomore class, some of whom will be making up for the loss of three senior starters as the team hits the hardwood for 2015-16. Senior point guard Hannah Zirkel is back and ready to steady the ship after playing most of last season off the ball. Now running the offense full time, Zirkel will not only be counted on for scoring points but also creating opportunities for the rest of the team. “Everything runs around her,” head coach h Shaun Fean said. “Point guard is her most natural position.” nSenior guard Brianna Ventola, entering her third varsi-ty season, is a strong outside shooter and the team’s best on-the-ball defender. EAST MEADOW Jets’ size could pose problems em ms

fter missing out on the Nassau Class AA playoffs on the final day of last season, East Meadow is back and bigger then it’s been in years — literally. The Jets will at times feature a front line that includes three players at least 6-foot, 4-inches tall who can help control the boards on both ends of the floor. “We can shoot but we’re big,” head coach Barry Dickson said. “We’re going to play inside-out. We’ll [move] the ball around a lot. If teams double down, we can throw it to the shooters.” Senior Austin Birnbaum, entering his third varsity season, is the biggest of the bunch in the low post and set to jump into the starting lineup at power forward. At 6-foot6, he’s steadily developed his low post moves and can also get out and run the floor. He’ll be joined by 6-4 senior small forward Tom Zitzman, a wide receiver on the varsity football team who’s also athletic. Junior Will Ayers a lineman for the Jets on the gridiron is 6-5 and won’t be easy to move once he establishes position in the blocks. Defensively, the hope is that the team’s size will excel in the zone, with the Jets quick group of guards operating well in space. Leading the offense is J.R. Howell, a junior who gradually worked his way into the starter’s role by the end of last season. A strong distributor, Howell can also keep defenses honest with his outside jumper if teams give him space to shoot. Senior Joey Minucci is back at shooting guard with Howell getting support from junior Kyle Liebel. Junior Nick Forrler is expected to log minutes at the 14 — December 17, 2015

ith only three players with more than one year of varsity experience, East Rockaway will rely on chemistry and work ethic to make its presence felt in Conference ABC after coming up winless against conference foes last season. “The attitude and work ethic is so much superior,” head coach Joe Lores said. “The whole team played together in summer league, so we’re looking for that cohesiveness to help us win some games.” The Rocks recorded two wins overall in 2014-15 and have nearly 10 non-league games, including two against Shelter Island, to go with home-and-home contests against ABC rivals Cold Spring Harbor, Wheatley, Malverne, Oyster Bay and Carle Place. Leading scorer Danny Fusco is back to lead the offense after pouring in 20 points per game and earning All-County honors last winter. Approaching 800 points for his career, Fusco, a senior guard, also has a chance to become the school’s all-time leader (Michael West ’87, 1,034 points.) “I’m sure Danny will see an awful lot of box-andones, but he can create shots for himself and he’s also unselfish,” Lores said. “He can score from anywhere and it’s his season to shine.” Fusco’s numbers spiked down the stretch last season when Eric Graves, now a senior, emerged as the starting point guard. “Defenses need to respect Eric,” Lores said. “He takes care of the ball pretty well and takes pride in passing.” Junior guard Nick Parziale is the likely first player off the bench and a 16 — December 17, 2015

ELMONT Spartans should be in title hunt

lmont has won its conference championship each of the past three seasons only to see its season come to an end with a loss to Uniondale in the Nassau Class AA playoffs. The Spartans move to Class A, where they should be among the teams competing for a county crown. Elmont will play a difficult non-league schedule that includes Amityville, Oceanside, and Copiague, to prepare it for home-and-home battles with Carey, Bellmore JFK, Sewanhaka, Garden City, Great Neck North, Manhasset, and Jericho in Conference A-1. Head coach George Holub likes what he sees in the early going. “We’re a little bit different from what we’ve been in the past,” Holub said. “We’re still going to play defense the way we like to, but we’re more of an offensive-minded team. “We’re transitioning from playing in AA to A,” he added. “It’s more of a finesse game than a power game. The guys have worked extremely hard in the spring, summer, and fall to prepare for the season.” Senior captain Yasir Lawrence is solid from the perimeter, and has added a dimension to his game by improving upon his ability to drive to the basket and finish. KC Ndefo has outrageous athletic ability. The 6-foot-3 sophomore loves to block shots, handles the ball well, and is a nightmare for opponents to match up against. Point guard Travis Robinson-Morgan, a senior captain, does a great job of getting all of his teammates involved in the offense, and can fill it up when calling his own number. shoots well and has a terrific motor. Olawoye will likely be the first player off the bench according to Holub. Jalen Burgess is a combo forward who handles the ball well and is capable of catching fire for the perimeter. Senior Darius Celestin is a similar player. He’s a talented passer with a solid midrange game. Senior captain Lerone Clark is a steady influence when on the court. Clark brings elements of poise and control when playing the point.

Lady Spartans can prove tough The Elmont girls picked up a conference title and rode an undefeated record all the way to the Nassau Class AA semifinal round before falling to Massapequa in 2014-15. The Lady Spartans, who finished with an impressive record of 17-1 overall, lost a slew of points and rebounds to graduation, and will look to a young roster to pick up the slack. The team moves to Class A, and will compete in Conference A-1. Garden City and Sewanhaka figure to o challenge the Lady Spartans for league supremacy. Tom Magno, in his ninth season as head coach at Elmont, knows there’s a learning curve for his team which has just one senior. “This is the youngest team m I have ever had,” Magno said.. “I’m optimistic, but it’s goingg to take some time for us to figure out who we are. We’ve lost about 30 points and 25 rebounds per game from last season. FREEPORT Hopes remain high for Red Devils

reeport comes off a remarkable season that saw the Red Devils finish with an overall record of 16-3, and a playoff run that ended with a loss to eventual county champion Baldwin in the Class AA semifinals. The Red Devils should be a team to be reckoned with, but every game figures to be a dogfight in Nassau Conference AA-I, a league comprising Uniondale, Farmingdale, Hempstead, Massapequa, Oceanside, and Syosset. Long-time coach Bob DeBonis, who won 416 career games, has stepped aside from coaching the Red Devils, and Larry Steimer takes over as head coach after stints at Garden City and Long Beach. Steimer is eager to get things going. “This is an athletic, tight-knit group of veterans and newcomers,” Steimer said. “While they may not have been starters last season, most of them saw time and contributed, and have varsity experience. They did well as a team over the summer. I’m looking forward to working with this bunch.” Jaylen Jones will take over at point guard. Jones is a leader on the floor who sees the court well and does a nice job of putting teammates in position to score. Fellow senior Willie Tenzie will move over to shooting guard, but will also see time at the point. Tenzie is a terrific shooter who handles the ball well. Expect Tenzie to be one of the team’s scoring leaders. A pair of junior guards should make big contributions. Rajah Mayo, a sharpshooting southpaw who is the team’s best one-on-one player, and fleet-footed Rashad Tucker will bring tremendous energy and athleticism to the 20 — December 17, 2015

Lady Red Devils ready to run The Lady Devils ran off eight wins in their last 10 games in 2014-15, and advanced to the Class AA quarterfinals where they lost to Mepham. Massapequa figures to be the team to beat, but there are no juggernauts in the conference. Freeport lost its top two scorers, but returns a pair of starters. Head coach Meredith Jones is optimistic. “This team will be a little different from what we’ve had in the past,” Jones said. “We’ll be able to mix things up a little more, and play a lott of different combinations. I like our chemistry. The girls enjoy playing together, and like setting up one another for success.” Junior captain Maya Thomas figures to be a go-to player for the Lady Devils. Thomas, who has been with the varsity since her freshman year, can bury threes, take the ball to the rack, and set up teammates. Senior captain Katherine Sanchez joins Thomas in the backcourt. KENNEDY Versatility a strength for Cougars

acked by a pair of AllConference returnees and a roster as versatile as a swiss army knife, Kennedy’s primed to create some matchup problems on the hardwood this winter. Senior Michael Schwartz, now entering his third varsity campaign, is one of the returning All-Conference honorees and perhaps the biggest matchup nightmare for opponents. At 6-foot-1, Schwartz is capable of playing any position on the floor with his two most natural spots being in the backcourt, as the point guard or off guard. And while he may be a bit undersized to play up front, his quickness will be tough for the bigger defenders most likely to cover him. “He can play any position,” head coach Rory Block said. “It’s good because any team with size [could] have matchup problems.” While Schwartz is also able to run the offense from his forward position, the majority of those duties will fall on senior James Ferry, a returning All-Conference point guard. Ferry has a strong handle and his quickness will be an asset as the Cougars look to push the tempo. Senior Josh Schuit, another in a line of strong guards on the roster, can also create his own shot on drives to the hoop. The backcourt mix also includes senior Jason Teich, a solid defender, and a trio of juniors — Josh Eisner, Joey Bernstein and Matt Muscarella. Eisner is a combo guard who can shoot as well as he passes, while Bernstein and Muscarella, each in their first varsity seasons, are scoring threats with good jumpers. Sophomore Steven Carlson runs the floor well and is slated to play the off guard and small forward, while classmate Rich Draude is an aggressive six-footer who provides muscle in the paint. Senior Rudy Nemorin will contribute points in transition, and freshman Marco Travaglione is also part of the frontcourt mix.

Lady Cougars banking on experience Kennedy’s hoping a little familiarity breeds success, as the girls return eight players and enters their second season under head coach Rudy D’Amico. “The familiarity plays a [big] part in the team playing better,” D’Amico said. “They know me and I know them. “This is a good group to y coach. For the girls on varsity as freshmen last year everything was new. This year as sophomores they know what the competition is about.” The returnees are led by senior Cara Travaglione, an athletic small forward and three-sport athlete with an excellent jumper and even better decision making. Travaglione is well-rounded on the hardwood and also excels on the defensive side of the floor. Senior Hanna Ferry, the playmaking point guard, will be joined by classmate Kayla Goldklang and junior Nicolina Torchia. fter being a part of the Nassau Class A championship picture for five seasons, the Golden Tornadoes are eager to get back in the title hunt following a difficult four-win 2014-15 campaign. “If anything, last season was a good learning experience,” head coach Lou Robinson said. “We were competitive in most games and the kids handled adversity well. “I love the chemistry we’re bringing back,” he added. “We have the benchmark of strong Lawrence teams in the past. These kids are a bundle of energy. They’re athletic and personable.” In addition to the returnees, Robinson is excited about the return of senior Marquan Williams to the program. Williams will serve as the starting point guard and can raise the level of everyone else on the court. “Marquan played JV as a sophomore,” Robinson said. “He’s fast, strong and has a good understanding of the game.” Getting the rock into the hands of 6-foot-5 forward Sammy Robinson will be one of Williams’ main responsibilities. Robinson, an All-County selection after averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds in conference games, can stretch defenses with his long range as well as score down low. Senior A’Dante Oliver and junior Najier Gillispie also return to the frontcourt. Oliver, who could be poised for a breakout season, shoots well and jumps out of the gym, the coach said. He’s also a lockdown defender. Gillispie is strong around the rim and becoming a more consistent finisher and verbal leader. Senior guard Kamron Gilchrist, who led the team 26 — December 17, 2015

Senior Chris Rincon and junior Warren Shivers provide backcourt depth, while senior Omari Washington will contribute at forward. “Expectations are high,” Robinson said. “The past few seasons are proof once you get to the playoffs anything can happen.”

Experience helps Lady Golden Tornadoes While success was difficult to come by last season for the rebuilding Lady Golden Tornadoes, who managed just one victory, longtime head coach George Klein is looking for the experience gained d to pay dividends in 2015-16. “We were in most games with a young team,” Klein said. “We improved as the season went on, and now we’re hoping the growing pains make us even better this year. Cutting down on turnovers will too.” Lawrence’s starting lineup p is likely to feature only one senior — center Angelica Galletti. She was a part-time starter a season ago and is an excellent rebounder with good awareness around the basket, Klein said. “From her freshman year to now, Angelica is one of the most improved players I’ve ever coached,” he noted. “She has great leadership qualities and is determined to succeed.” Returning to the frontcourt is three-year starter Nayalise Montilla, who averaged 12 points per game as a sophomore. “She’s an offen-

LONG BEACH Marines have promising outlook

varsity assistant for four years ending in the 2013-14 campaign, Scott Martin takes over as the Marines’ third head coach in as many seasons and inherits a team coming off a 6-6 finish in Conference AA-III and a first-round playoff loss to Plainview. “We’ve looked promising in the first two scrimmages,” Martin said. “The kids are working really hard.” Long Beach remained in AA-III, but defending conference champion Elmont moved to Class A, swapping spots with Great Neck South. Mepham, Calhoun, MacArthur and Westbury also return. “Elmont’s departure opens up the door for someone else to slide in,” Martin said. “I don’t know a whole lot about the conference yet, but I’d like to think we have as good a shot as anyone.” The Marines have a few options at the point, where senior Joe Bourne will see the majority of minutes. He impressed Martin in scrimmages against Bethpage and Kennedy. “Right away I saw he can run the show,” Martin said. “He has the look of a leader. He has a calm demeanor and can distribute and shoot.” Bourne and junior Pat Baum are the keys to breaking the press. Baum makes smart decisions with the ball and also has a good handle, the coach noted. “He doesn’t get rattled,” Martin said. “He likes to get in the lane but he also has some range.” Senior forward Seamus McDonagh, an All-Conference selection, has well-rounded skills and a 6-foot-1 frame. He’ll play a leadership role and help the Marines stretch defenses with his outside 30 — December 17, 2015

shooting ability. “He’s good in all areas,” Martin said. “He’s tall enough to work down low in certain sets.” Senior forward Tanner Owens will be asked to rebound and provide strong defense in the lane, while senior center Marquis Charles, who’s 6-4, can open things up for the perimeter shooters. Most of the team’s depth can be found in the backcourt with senior Tyquan Higdon, who brings a lot of energy, junior Shaquan Barron, who can challenge for a starting position, and sophomore Matteo Camarda, a reliable outside shooter.

Quickness a plus for Lady Marines Replacing Nassau County’s leading scorer from last season, Kadaja Bailey, is a challenge for the Lady Marines who’ll look to use their quickness to force turnovers and make things happen in transition. Long Beach comes off a 9-99 campaign that ended with a first-round playoff defeat at Herricks in overtime. “We were never out of d any games last season,” head coach Kristin Ciccone said. “I don’t know what to expect this season after what we lost, but we’ll be a fast team. ynbrook is striving to build off a four-win campaign in arguably the toughest conference in Nassau County, and head coach Jamie Adams expects the Owls to benefit from a full season of running his system. “We were in just about every game,” Adams said. “I’m not worried about our ability to compete or the work ethic. I’m worried about our consistency. We need to bring it for 32 minutes.” With senior forward Frank Boni serving as an extension of the coach on the floor, the Owls have a confident leader in the All-Conference selection who averaged 14 points per game. Boni was second in the county in three pointers made with 56, finishing behind only Baldwin’s Daraja Rodwell. “Frank’s a serious offensive threat,” Adams said. “We’ll run some sets through him, but he also creates his own shots.” Boni will draw plenty of defensive attention, and that’s where senior guard Nate Flood comes in. Flood worked his way into the starting lineup last season and proved he belonged. He can shoot the trey and get to the rim, Adams said, and often will be opposite Boni to keep defenses honest. “We want to be unpredictable and versatile,” said Adams, whose team must navigate a rugged Conference A-III schedule consisting of two-time defending county champion Valley Stream South, Lawrence, Floral Park, Glen Cove, Bethpage, North Shore and Valley Stream North. The Owls have a myriad of options at the point, where juniors Nick Tuzzio and Matt Higginson, along with fresh32 — December 17, 2015

man Rylan Blondo, could all see minutes. Tuzzio comes off a big football season and is a high-energy player who Adams expects to make an impact on the defensive end. Higginson, Blondo and junior Rob Sitonio are up from the JV. Sitonio is as versatile as anyone on the roster, Adams said, and could be a factor on the wing opposite Boni. Senior Dardan Pulatani can be a playmaker at center, while senior Matt Holquist brings a heavy dose of energy off the bench.

High hopes for Lady Owls Experience and chemistry are two aspects that could lead the Lady Owls deep into the postseason after they won a dozen games and lost a onepoint nailbiter at Glen Cove in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs in head coach Steve LoCicero’s debut season at the helm. “We’re well ahead of last year’s pace,” LoCicero said. “We’ve got a great group of girls that enjoy playing basketball. The experience factor is on our side. They played all summer.” Senior point guard Kacie Curran returns as the floor general and brings a high level of intensity and grit. “Kacie is one of those rare athletes who’s as competitive as any kid I’ve ever coached,” r LoCicero said. “She’s a gamer. She’ll do whatever it takes to help us be successful.” The coach is banking on the leadership of Curran and senior forward Amanda Giorgio to be a key factor. “They provide all the leadership you’d want,” he said. Giorgio, who averaged 8.5 points per game, can be a lockdown defender and play any of the five spots on the court. Junior center Kerrin Montgomery is going to present a matchup headache for

MacARTHUR Youthful Generals aim for playoffs

he Generals are seeking a repeat playoff run with a young team following the graduation of nine seniors. MacArthur made its first postseason appearance in three years in 2014-15 and earned a Nassau Class AA first-round overtime victory against Port Washington. Many of the pieces from that 11-win team are now in college, which will lead to some growing pains early in the new season, according to head coach Eric Rubin. “We have a chance to make the playoffs if we work hard, but it will be a challenge,” Rubin said. “We’re a very young team.” Providing veteran leadership to MacArthur’s many new faces is senior forward Jared Wolfe, who is in his third year on varsity. Wolfe averaged 5.2 points per game last season as the first player off the bench and also excelled on the football field leading the Generals to their first county title since 2002 last month. “He leads by example and works so hard,” Rubin said. “He’s a special athlete.” Senior guard Mike Creaven also returns and is expected to start after coming off the bench as a junior with a deep senior-laden team. He started in MacArthur’s playoff overtime win due to an injury and hit two big 3-pointers to help the Generals advance. “Hopefully that playoff experience will help him as he takes on more of a role this season,” said Rubin of Creaven’s clutch postseason play. Senior 6-foot 2 center Tom Epp will help key the inside game. “He’s a good offensive 34 — December 17, 2015

player,” Rubin said. “He’s a solid shooter.” Among the new varsity players Rubin is hoping steps up is sophomore guard Benny Orlando, who started on JV last year. “He has put in a tremendous amount of work,” Rubin said. “He has a lot of talent.” Junior Mike Maringelli and sophomore Nick Purcell are also slated to contribute on varsity this season at the forward spot a year removed from JV play. “Hopefully we peak when the time is right,” Rubin said.

High hopes for Lady Generals With MacArthur returning nine starters and in the second year of a new up-tempo offense, head coach Dave Radtke has high hopes for the 2015-16 season. Radtke guided MacArthurr to a playoff appearance in hiss first season as the Generals’ head coach following five years at Calhoun. His offensive system involves subbing every nearly minute of the game utilizing all 12 players on the roster and having rested legs to play fast-paced. “We have tremendous athletes,” Radtke said. “I’m m trying to implement a system that utilizes their athletic ability.” Junior guard Angeline Klein returns as MacArthur’s leading scorer after averaging 19 points per game as a sophomore. Klein is playing with a heavy heart this season following the recent death of her mother following a 15-year fight with breast cancer. MALVERNE Mules revamp after regaining g tit title tle

he Mules are back on top as the reigning Nassau Class B champions after beating Cold Spring Harbor and Carle Place, respectively, in last season’s semifinals and finals with a senior-laden roster. A repeat won’t be easy with not a single starter returning, but Walter Askionoff, a longtime assistant coach with the program, believes Malverne can be in the mix. “We have a lot of work to do, but it’s always our philosophy to be playing our best at the end of the season,” Askionoff said. “Whether that’s good enough to win, we’ll see. We always schedule a difficult non-league to get us prepared.” A handful of contributors off the bench last winter are stepping into starting roles, including seniors Kareem Headley and Ian Foley. Headley will run the show from the point, and Askionoff said the coaching staff, headed by Darroll Lopez, is optimistic he can provide double digits in points on a consistent basis. Foley, at 6-foot-3, is one of the tallest players on the roster and someone who defends and shoots well. He’ll start at forward along with junior Josh Rivers, who grew to about 6-2 during the offseason and features a smooth jump shot. “We’re going to get Josh in motion and try to make things happen,” Askionoff said. MEPHAM Pirates boast a deep backcourt

he return of two starters and three other players with varsity experience gives Mepham hope that it can string together some victories in Conference AAIII. The Pirates’ attack centers on solid defense and taking care of the basketball. “We will look to be opportunistic,” head coach Pat Fallon said. “We have a bunch of guards so if we can push it, we will.” Senior Zach Egland is a combo guard equally comfortable running the offense or piling up the points on the perimeter. An All-League returnee, Egland has basketball smarts and is a strong distributor who also excels on defense, where he can play man or rotate over as a help defender. Junior Jeremy Lissade is expected to see some time at the point but can also help spread the defense with perimeter shooting. Sophomore Nahjel Sands and Tom Testa are also pushing for time at point guard. Junior Jake Santiago can contribute in the scoring column coming off the bench. Senior Casey Cote and juniors Steven Liriano and Jon Stick are also in the mix. “Our quickness on the perimeter [is a strength],” Fallon said. “We have a lot of perimeter players and more depth in the guard spots than the post.” Egland returns to his starting slot in the backcourt, and senior John Anon is back at small forward, where his long 6-foot-1 frame will help on defense and his good perimeter shooting will boost the offensive attack. At six-foot, three-inches, junior Jordan Jones is Mepham’s tallest low post threat, and he’ll log minutes up front with seniors 38 — December 17, 2015

Infusion of youth boosts Lady Pirates The Lady Pirates lost several key leaders that helped guide them to the Nassau Class AA Final Four in each of the last two seasons. OCEANSIDE Sailors return to top conference

t’s back to Conference AA-I for the Sailors after a loss in the AA-II finale kept them out of last season’s Nassau Class AA playoff tournament in head coach Al Lyson’s debut campaign. “We came up one game short,” Lyson said. “We split with four teams and lost to Baldwin and Valley Stream Central twice.” Oceanside won’t be able to avenge any of last season’s conference losses, because its stay in AA-II was brief. Enrollment has it back facing the likes of Massapequa, Farmingdale, Freeport and Hempstead in AA-I. “We have some work to do,” Lyson said. “It all starts with effort, and I’m happy with what I’m seeing. “Our focus has to be on defense,” he added. The Sailors return three starters, including senior AllConference selections Kevin O’Keefe and Aronis Espinal. They’ll be counted on to provide the lion’s share of the offense along with senior point guard John Grossi, the team’s best outside shooter. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound O’Keefe averaged 14 points per game and is tough on the boards. Lyson said O’Keefe stood out in the team’s first scrimmage. “Kevin’s a real versatile player and we need him to be a leader,” the coach said. “He not only can score inside, but he handles the ball well and has the ability to hit threes.” Espinal, a 6-4, 230-pound center who just helped the football squad reach the county final, became a dominant force on the court down the stretch last season. “If he stays healthy and out of foul trouble, I don’t see any problem with him attaining a double-double every game,” Lyson said. 40 — December 17, 2015

The coach is excited to see what Grossi can do with a season of varsity experience under his belt. “He became stronger and more confident as the season progressed,” Lyson said. Junior guard Charlie Franzo comes off a big season for a winning JV squad, and the athleticism of junior Maurice Douse-Lewis makes him an X-factor. “Maurice has a tremendous skill set and looked good in the scrimmage,” explained Lyson, who added junior Rory Duignan and sophomore Kyle Cohen will also contribute.

New challenge awaits Lady Sailors Fresh off their first playoff appearance in a decade, the Lady Sailors boast a solid group of returnees and aim to get back to the postseason despite a more difficult road in Conference AA-I. Oceanside won 11 games last season including a first-round playoff victory over Herricks. “It’s a challenge that’s exciting,” head coach Jason d Manning said of being placed back in AA-I. “The success we had last season should help us. The girls got a taste of that playoff atmosphere and want it back.” A deep backcourt will lead the way, Manning said. Senior Risa Zucker, the team’s best defender who likes to slash to the basket, earned All-Class honors and the coach anticipates her being a leading scorer. “She’s quicker and more dangerous,” he said. Senior point guard Cassie Cesario is a three-year starter who serves as the quarterback on the floor. “She’s comfortable running the show and doesn’t need to score to be a difference-maker,” Manning said. “She’s our best ballhandler and I think with her and the other guards we have,

SEAFORD Vikings look to duplicate last season

eaford exceeded expectations last winter in winning a conference championship, and longtime head coach Ralph Rossetti hopes for similar results in the 2015-16 campaign. The Vikings surged late to win their last 10 regularseason games before falling in the first round of the Nassau County Class A playoffs to Carey, 63-52. Lost from last year’s 14-4 team are senior tri-captains Michael Scully, Robert Buell and Jake Doyle, but Seaford returns other talent ready for another playoff run. “We have pretty good size and we’re very athletic,” said Rossetti, who captured Conference A-V coach of the year honors last season and has won 330 career games in 33 years leading the program. “The team should be competitive.” Seaford is led by senior captain Keith McHugh, a three-year varsity starter at guard. McHugh averaged 14.4 points per game and drained 38 3-pointers last season. He was also a standout on the boys’ soccer team earning AllConference honors. Other senior offensive threats back from last season are twin brothers Pat and John Quigley. Pat Quigley is a 3-point threat in the backcourt while John gives Seaford an inside presence as a 6-foot 4 center. Rossetti expects contributions this winter from juniors Andrew Kane and Danny Roell, who both shined on the football field this fall. Kane is slated to play forward with Roell at guard. Juniors John Connell, Jimmy Ryan and Andrew Pich are also expected to be part of Rossetti’s system that 42 — December 17, 2015

stresses up-tempo offense and aggressive defensive play. The Vikings excelled offensively last season scoring 50 points or more in all but three games and surpassed 60 in six contests. Rossetti said it will be challenging to repeat as conference champions, facing the likes of Friends Academy and West Hempstead, but the ability to go with various lineups will help keep opposing teams on their toes. The Vikings have been a consistent playoff team under Rossetti and captured a county championship in 1997-98. “We can play small or big,” Rossetti said. “We can be versatile.”

Lady Vikings boast young talent With Seaford’s roster filled with underclassmen, head coach Bob Vachris hopes for growth throughout the season to allow the Lady Vikingss to compete on the big sage in February. “I hope we are mature enough to compete with the d top teams in the county,” said Vachris, whose team went 11-7 last year. “We need to be able to step up to the older players.” The youthful lineup features sophomore twin sisterss Julia and Jenna Siler, who enter their third season competing on varsity. Julie is one of the Viking backcourt leaders at guard while Jenna is a presence in the frontcourt as a 5-foot-9 forward. The Silers’ older sister Kathryn graduated last year as one of the program’s most accomplished shooters. Sophomore Madie O’Hagan also returns after averaging 6.3 points per game as a freshman. O’Hagan provides an inside paint presence with returning varsity players Jenna Siler, senior forward Molly VanDusen

and 6-foot sophomore center Jackie Grzelaczyk. Vachris is also hoping for contributions close to the basket from junior Stephanie Routledge, who played on junior varsity last year. The Lady Vikings have a deep backcourt anchored by Julia Siler, who is a threat from 3-point range much like her older sister Kathryn was. Juniors Kaitlyn Meyer and Ally Palermo also are capable ball handlers, who also excel on the lacrosse field. Senior guards Alyssa Mallory and Jessica Fischetti add athleticism at the perimeter and have also stepped up in a leadership role as co-captains. Seaford is two years removed from a run to the Nassau County Class A semifinals with a seniorladen team. Last year with

SEWANHAKA Indians will rely on teamwork

t was an up-and-down season for the Sewanhaka boys in 2014-15. The Indians had big expectations, but just couldn’t seem to get over the hump and lost a lot of close games. Sewanhaka may have had more talented teams in past years, but this season the Indians appear to be more team-oriented, and seem to have the makings of a squad that will be difficult on opponents. Head coach Jay Allen thinks his team will be highly competitive. “We made a point to make non-basketball stuff a big focus when we were putting the team together,” Allen said. “Having good character and getting it done in the classroom are essential. I believe it’s going to translate to how we play on the court.” Kamoy Silvera has been a pass-first point guard in the past, but he will look to score more as a senior. Silvera worked hard in the offseason and improved his strength and quickness. Senior Korey McLaurin is the team’s best one-on-one player. McLaurin does a nice job of getting to the basket, and is an excellent complement to Silvera. Sophomore small forward Rahim Akinwunmi showed good things on the varsity as a freshman. He’s become a more complete player and will jump into the starting lineup. Sewanhaka gets depth in the backcourt from senior Jessen Leesse, a solid defender who likes running the floor, and sophomore Kamaal Chin, a player who shoots well, and will likely serve as the backup point guard. ity. Junior Marcus Johnson rebounds well, is tough on the blocks, and has a solid all-around game. Senior Sam Williams is a defensive presence in the paint. Williams does a nice job challenging and blocking shots. Luke Iandoli had some good moments on the floor as a junior. At 6-foot-4, he’s the team’s biggest player, but he’s not just an inside performer. Iandoli is a versatile player who can hit threes and rebounds well. Sophomore Jazier Whitely has terrific potential.

Lady Indians will be in the hunt After back-to-back seasons of disappointing losses in the opening round of the Nassau Class A playoffs, expectations are high for the Sewanhaka girls. The team lost a solid backcourt tandem, but returns a slew of veterans and talented underclassmen. The Lady Indians should compete for Conference A-I supremacy in a league that includes, among others, Garden City, Elmont, and Manhasset. As always, head coach Alex Soupios is excited aboutt the potential. “This is a very deep team, and it could be thee most talented group I have had,” Soupios said. “We’ll be able to put more girls on the floor, which will hopefully help to wear down opponents while keeping our starters fresh. I’m looking forward to seeing this team continue to come together.” Casey Hayes, a two-time All-County selection, returns to lead the Lady Indians. The 6-foot senior captain has a great touch around the hoop and a nice shot from the short corner. Opponents will have trouble in the paint when Hayes has 6-foot freshman Brianna Lee on the floor with her at the same time.

SOUTH SIDE Cyclones possess size and depth

outh Side enters the 2015-16 campaign looking to rack up another conference title as well as put an end to a stretch of disappointing finishes. The Cyclones went undefeated in 12 games against Conference A-II foes last season, marking a second straight conference title, and won 17 overall but suffered an upset loss in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs to Floral Park. “We should be back competing for a county championship, but there’s a lot of things we need to do along the way,” head coach Jerry D’Angelo said. “I like our size, depth and versatility.” Opponents aren’t going to like matching up against two-time All-County forward Alex Sorensen, who last season averaged 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists per game. “Alex has been our go-to player for several seasons after being pretty good as a freshman,” D’Angelo said. “He’s evolved as a leader and extended the range of his jumper. He’s always been difficult to stop when he attacks the basket.” Sorensen is of the three returning starters for the Cyclones, who will tangle with Hewlett, Roosevelt, Wantagh, New Hyde Park, Roslyn, Division and Plainedge in A-II. Point guard Matt DiLuccio returns to direct the offense after earning All-Conference honors as a junior. “Matt knows how to get his teammates the ball in the right spots,” D’Angelo said. “He’s doesn’t turn the ball over and he’s a defensive hound.” Junior shooting guard Brandan Grayson comes off a big season for the JV squad and TO ADVERTISE CALL 516-569-4000

can be dynamic at the offensive end. At 6-foot-8, returning senior center Tim Awosika presents a mismatch nightmare for the competition. He averaged 9 points and 9 rebounds per game last season and can inflict plenty of damage in the paint. He’s backed by senior Matt Boranian, a 6-6 physical presence who does a lot of things well. Tim’s younger brother, junior Dami, is a 6-4 forward with guard-like skills and someone who can score and defend, while junior Paul Lonergan brings varsity experience.

Lady Cyclones seek deep playoff run First-year head coach Dan Ferrick, in his 16th season with the program but first at the varsity level, believes the Lady Cyclones are going to surprise a lot of teams this season and challenge for the conference title. “One of the best things about this team is we have five seniors, four juniors and four sophomores,” said Ferrick, who praised the efforts of previous coach Katelyn Dunn. “It’s a great mix.” Senior captains Maria Karanasos and Lauren McNally, along with junior newcomer Jourdin Thomas, will set the tone for South n Side, which ended last season with a dozen victories and a first-round playoff loss at Division. Karanasos, a forward who missed the latter part of her junior campaign with a broken bone in her hand, can be a consistent double-digit scorer, Ferrick said. “She can put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket and also play with her back to the rim.” McNally is a prototypical power forward, Ferrick said. “Lauren can be a monster on the boards,” he explained. “She’ll do a lot of the dirty

work for us and has good touch around the basket. hin on varsity experience but heavy in the depth department, the Eagles are aiming to return to the Nassau Class AA playoffs after a rare absence in the tournament last winter. “It was the first time in a long time we missed the playoffs,” head coach Hayward Alfred said. “Our conference is tough every year, so we know we’re in for a dogfight every night. Getting back to the playoffs will be a challenge.” Alfred is counting on contributions from everyone on a roster mostly comprised of seniors and includes a pair of freshmen. “It’s a group that’s working hard and doing everything asked of them,” he said. “The offseason dedication was great.” Senior Nico Serrano runs the show from the point and is a pass-first guard. He earned a starting role midway through last season. “He has great court vision and an unselfish nature,” Alfred said. “He’s the type of kid who’s going to look to set up his teammates first, but he also shoots the ball well.” Six-foot-4 senior forward Amenrah Reid can defend against any position on the floor and is an athletic wing who likes to be aggressive to the basket. “He’s a monster in transition,” Alfred said of Reid, who also brings a reliable mid-range jumper. Also 6-4, senior forward Jermaine Fraser has the best skill set of the bunch, the coach noted. he target is squarely on the two-time defending Nassau Class A champion Falcons, who thrived under pressure last winter to pull out numerous close games on the way to a repeat county title. They added the first Long Island crown in program history and return two starters, but must replace at least some production of departed all-time leading scorer Dana King. “Everybody is going to be coming for us,” head coach Matt Johnsen said. “We experienced it last year. Defending the title is definitely tougher than winning it the first time. “In the conference we’re in, you’ve got to work and come ready to play all 14 nights,” he added. “Nothing will come easy. I think all the close conference games we had last year helped us in the playoffs.” Johnsen said South (18-5) peaked defensively at the perfect time last season, and he’s looking for it to find a rhythm before February. Having arguably the best low-post defender in the county doesn’t hurt the Falcons’ cause, Johnson said. Senior All-County 6-foot-8 center Hall Elisias blocked over 100 shots last season and averaged 12.2 points and 14.3 rebounds. “He’s helped us win two titles and he’s looking to go out with another big season,” Johnsen said. “He’s set big goals. He has to play every game as if it’s the playoffs.” Also returning is senior guard Jeremi Hernandez, the team’s best pure shooter who played a key role last season. “He can put the ball in the hoop and we’ll need him to step up and score a little more,” Johnsen said. Daniel Sarpong provide the Falcons with two capable point guards who offer something different. Trail is a scrappy defender, and Sarpong’s asset is offense. The forward group runs deep. Senior Dion Ogunade is a strong shooter with the ability to stretch a defense, senior Kyle Brooks can be an offensive spark, and senior William Golding is quick and defends well. “We have good size and speed,” Johnsen said.

Transition a key for Lady Falcons Cutting down on turnovers and turning opponents’ miscues into layups on the offensive end would go a long way toward helping the Lady Falcons improve their win total. They notched three victories last season, including a pair against Conference A-II rivals. “We want to try to play at a faster pace,” head coach Dan Drumm said. “We need to score more if we’re going to be competitive. As soon as we get a rebound, we’ll look to go. We’ll press when we can and hopefully cause some turnovers and score offf of them.” South returns two players who averaged double digits in points last season. Senior point guard Nicole Cutrone poured in 12.5 ppg, while senior center Uju Nwaigwe chipped in 10 ppg. Cutrone, who had 23 points in a game against Lawrence, earned All-Class honors. “She’s a coach’s dream as far as her work ethic goes,” said Drumm, who added Cutrone will never be the tallest player on the court but is as tough as nails. “She distributes the ball well and does a good job breaking the press.” Nwaigwe’s 6-foot frame also comes in handy on the press-break. WANTAGH Warriors determined to make playoffs

antagh enters the 2015-16 season looking for a playoff push after several close losses last year. The Warriors are coming off a 5-12 season that included two one-point setbacks and three other defeats in single digits. Wantagh’s roster is filled with athletic and determined players looking to put the Warriors over the top. Head coach Keith Hunter said that with some starting spots up for grabs there has been a spirited competition in practice that he hopes carries over into the regular season. “It’s great to see the players compete every day,” said Hunter, whose team lost three games by five points or less last season. “Whoever is playing the best that week is going to play.” Senior small forward Will O’Brien will be big centerpiece of the offense. O’Brien was injured midway through last season, but Hunter expects him to bounce back strong in his final season of high school basketball. “We’re expecting a lot from him this year,” Hunter said of O’Brien. Senior power forward Mark Buchner joins O’Brien in leading the Warriors as cocaptains. Buchner provides a presence in the paint along with 6-foot-4 junior Sean Gutfleisch, who was selected as one of the top 40 players in Nassau County. “He has improved tremendously from last year,” said Hunter of Gutfleisch. Hunter also has size from 6-4 junior Sam Goldfarb, who can play guard or center. court. Wantagh will be shooting for its first playoff spot in three seasons, which can be achieved by finishing among the top four in a competitive Conference A-II. Hunter said South Side, Hewlett, Roosevelt and Plainedge will be big competition, but that the key to reaching the postseason will be improving game to game. “We should be right in the middle of the playoff race,” Hunter said. “We have a lot of opportunity for growth.”

New offensive look for Lady Warriors After the graduation of four-time All-County center Alexandra Parlato, Wantagh has a new look as it seeks to return to the county finals. “It’s a different type of team,” head coach Stan Bujacich said. “It’s a differentt offense.” Parlato is now playing on the collegiate level at Fordham, but Wantagh does bring back plenty of talent with smaller height from last year’s 18-3 team that was a win from capturing the program’s first county cham-pionship in nearly a decade. Seniors Nikki Sliwak, Darciee Smith and Courtney Gendelss along with junior Emily Fuchs are providing leadership as quad captains for a team motivated to climb that championship mountain. The Lady Warriors won a dramatic semifinal overtime game against rival Garden City before falling in the finals to North Shore, 50-46. “They are very mature players and know what it takes,” Bujacich said of his captains. “They are great mentors to the younger players.” Sliwak, an All-League selection, has been on varsity since eighth grade and has helped lead Wantagh to three straight conference titles.

ight players return for West Hempstead, but few who have much in the way of game experience at the varsity level. The Rams finished 8-4 in conference action last season and fell to Roosevelt in the opening round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. While the team lacks experience and proven scoring, expectations haven’t changed. West Hempstead expects to be a playoff team, and to challenge for conference supremacy in a league that comprises Locust Valley, Seaford, Island Trees, Clarke, Mineola, and Friends Academy. Head coach Ed Cosgrove expects his team to improve and come together as the season goes along. “We’ve had a couple of good weeks of practice, but we’re still trying to figure things out,” Cosgrove said. “We’re pretty deep and there’s not a big drop off from the starters to the players coming off the bench.” Without a returnee averaging five points or more per game, Cosgrove hopes senior guard Dayquan Crawley emerges as a guy who can fill up the stat sheet. Crawley is an athletic forward who shoots the ball well, and helps out bringing the ball up the court. Getting offense from Greg Schulze, a 6-foot-8 forward/ center, is essential. If West Hempstead is going to be successful, it will need Schulze to go strong to the basket and finish. Schulze’s size and athleticism make him a presence in the paint on defense. Liam Rockensies, a 6-5 forward/center, is a smart player who is relentless on the boards. He will need to control the glass for the Rams. A pair of seniors will 54 — December 17, 2015

handle point guard duties for the Rams. Tommy Farrell will look to move the ball around and put others in position to score. Glendon Gayle gives West Hempstead more of a scoring threat when he’s on the floor. Senior Izaiah Budhoo has the ability to get it done from the perimeter. The Rams hope he emerges as a consistent shooter and boosts the offense. Junior Christian Martinez may be the team’s best outside shooter.

Inexperienced Rams hope to compete West Hempstead got off to a slow start in 2014-15, but managed to battle back and earn a spot in the Nassau Class A playoffs where it fell to eventual Long Island-champion North Shore. The program has taken a hit with numbers being so low that the Rams won’t be capable of fielding a JV program. After losing three seniors who accounted for most of the team’s scoring, the Lady Rams expect to have a tough go at it in a conference that figures to be led by Island Trees, Seaford, and Locust Valley. Head coach Chris Van Kovics has a pretty simple blueprint for this team. “We need to put up shots when we have the opportunity to score,” Van Kovics said. “We can’t afford to turn the ball over and have too many possessions where we don’t get shots up,” he added. “We’re going to attempt to play tough defense to try to stay in games.” If the Rams have a go-to player it is junior point guard Lisette Palomo. The fleetfooted Palomo is extremely athletic and uses her defensive prowess to make life difficult for opposing guards. Van Kovics hopes Palomo can
