Baldwin Bruins working to continue trend

B

aldwin head coach Darius Burton is hoping great things come in fours. Or in this case, every four years.

The Bruins captured Nassau and Long Island Class AA championships in the 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2015-16 campaigns and have their sights set on the same in 2019-20. “We had a great offseason winning all three summer leagues and going undefeated,” Burton said. “We’re disappointed with how last season ended and we’re looking to build off the summer. We have a lot of capable scorers and everyone has to play unselfishly and buy in defensively.”

Baldwin won 18 of 20 games a year ago, with both defeats at the hands of Port Washington including one in the county semifinals. It was the Bruins’ 12th straight trip to the semis and they’ve won five Nassau crowns under Burton. “Last season we felt like it was one of the best teams we’ve had,” he said. “The returning guys have a chip on their shoulders because of the heavy senior class we graduated.”

The biggest obstacles in the Bruins’ way to their first title in four seasons, according to Burton, are Farmingdale, Uniondale and Port Washington. Baldwin will prepare with a stiff non-conference slate that includes Brentwood and Elmont.

It’ll be another senior-heavy group but with less experience than last season. Forward Isiah Walker earned All-Conference honors and does a lot of the dirty work. “He’s relentless on the boards and expanded his game,” Burton said. “He can score in transition and beat guys off the dribble.”

is another returnee with starting experience. He can shoot from long range and score in a variety of ways. Jones is joined in the backcourt by seniors Jayden McKenzie and Lance Henry. McKenzie takes over at the point after serving as a backup for two seasons. He’s quick, can knock down treys and get teammates involved. Henry’s improved as much as anyone on the roster, the coach said.

Bigger roles up front await seniors Trevor Blackett and Isiah Place, and juniors Jeff Douby (6-foot-7), Joshua Minton and Trey Parkin.

LadY BruINS TrY TO MaINTaIN crOwN The Lady Bruins continue to serve as the benchmark for all girls’ basketball programs on Long Island. They’ve captured six straight and nine of the last 10 Nassau Class AA crowns and are a couple of seasons removed from a perfect season that brought NYS public and Federation titles.

“Our success is a tribute to all the great players and a great coaching staff,” head coach Tom Catapano said. “Everyone works 12 months a year. In our community, it starts for these girls in third grade. We’re very fortunate.”

Baldwin’s 2018-19 season ended with a loss to Longwood in the L.I. Class AA title game. The Lady Bruins beat Syosset for the county crown, but as Catapano says, they return four points from that game compared to 45 for the Lady Braves. “Syosset will be very strong and a bunch of other teams bring back their best players,” Catapano said. “It’s going to be a challenging season for us because of the lack of experience. We only bring back one starter but the girls had a tremendous offseason and closed the gap on the more experienced teams we’ll be facing.”

The Lady Bruins are still planning to play at a fast pace but with a “few wrinkles,” Catapano said.

He’ll be looking for senior forward Elena Randolph, a fifth-year member of the varsity, to set the tone defensively as well as step up her offensive game. “Elena has been a part of our winning culture and is a great three-sport athlete,” he said. “We’d like to see her average a double-double.”

Senior Jasmin Green is a shifty wing who can run the floor and shoot from the outside. She and freshman Dallysshya Moreno were part of the rotation last season.

Moreno, at 5-foot-11, is the tallest player on the roster with offensive talent and shot-blocking ability.

With his team lacking in size, Magnuson said he hopes depth and athleticism will propel the Lady Colts towards the postseason, while also helping to create turnovers and turning them into transition baskets.

Carey Seahawks hoping to close the gap

T

he Carey boys had an up-and-down campaign in 2018-19, but saw marked improvement over the previous season. The Seahawks won their last two games in dramatic fashion to close with seven victories in head coach Steven Savino’s first season at the helm.

Once again, Carey will play in Conference A2 with the likes of Elmont, Sewanhaka, Bellmore JFK, and defending Long Island champion Manhasset. Savino hopes that his team will be more competitive.

“This is a great group of guys to work with,” Savino said.

“They’re more familiar with my style and know the expectations.

We’re working hard and getting better every day. Controlling the ball is going to be important. We can’t afford to make mistakes or turn the ball over. It’s coming together.”

Junior Chris Toscano figures to be the team’s go-to player. Toscano, who averaged 16.4 points per game as a sophomore, is a prolific scorer who can shoot from anywhere or take it to the hole.

Michael O’Connell will run the point for the Seahawks. O’Connell, who played JV a year ago, handles the ball well with both hands, sees the floor, and takes what the defense gives him. Toscano and O’Connell have strong synergy on the court.

Senior captain Nick Bell can play multiple positions. Bell has quick hands, good court vision, and bring it every time he’s on the floor. Guards Alex Pinto and Garrett Scavelli each have the ability to get hot from downtown.

At 6-foot-6, James Cosgrove give Carey has a big body.

a soft touch from midrange, and can even handle the ball to break a press. Fellow junior Cameron Denner is long and athletic. Denner is strong around the basket, and is one of the keys to Carey’s defense.

“We’re pretty young, but the underclassmen are experienced players,” Savino said. “I’m optimistic. The league is tough, but we’re not going to sit back. We want to be active on defense and get out in transition.”

LADy SEAhAWkS LikELy to iMpRovE Finding the win column has not come easy for the Carey girls of late. But, it’s never due to a lack of hard work or enthusiasm.

An injury-riddled team won just a pair of games in 2018-19, but with their top scorer back and a roster comprising capable athletes, the Lady Seahawks should be improved.

The league schedule is a bear, with Manhasset, Elmont, Valley Stream Central, Bellmore Kennedy, and defending Long Island champion Sewanhaka among their league foes, the Lady Seahawks will have their work cut out for them.

Anthony Turco takes over as head coach. “We don’t have much size, but we’re athletic,” Turco said. “Keeping out of foul trouble is going to be very important. We’re going to look to get after it, and get up and down the court.”

Senior Kelli Ann McGrath had another solid season, averaging 14.7 points per game. McGrath is usually the fastest player on the court, and she’s fearless. She’ll continue to take opponents off the dribble, take the ball to the rack, and wreak havoc on defense. This season, she will have a little bit more talent around her.

Mary Grace Spano has missed

two seasons due to injuries, but she returns for her senior year. Spano sees the floor well and could hit the open shot. Freshman Caylee DeMeo can play both guard positions, is tenacious on defense, and is not afraid to shoot the three. Junior Kayla Todzia is a versatile guard who is capable of heating up from the perimeter.

With a lack of size in the frontcourt, the Lady Seahawks are going to have to hit the boards as a unit. Senior Arianna Millan is a workhorse in the paint. Millan is a tough rebounder who has a soft touch from 10-12 feet out. She’ll get support

ne team, one heart.

That’s the mantra this season for the East Rockaway boys’ as they tried to build on the momentum from last year’s playoff effort against top-seeded Malverne in the Class B semifinals. The Rocks led 26-18 at halftime, but foul trouble in the third quarter eventually resulted in their demise.

East Rockaway will represent Conference C in the BC division this season and with it will be an automatic berth in the Long Island title game, but head coach Paul Collins still wants to turn some heads in the process.

“We want to be in the top four,” said the third-year bench boss. “Even though we’re not going to be in the B playoffs, let’s play it as if we’re going for the B playoffs. I said, ‘I know you guys think that’s down the road that we’re playing something for real, but you’ve got to competitive night in and night out.”

Last year’s leading scorer, Chris Levins (14.5 ppg), graduated, but junior Franklin Infante (12.8) and senior Aidan O’Connor (11.5) should help ease that loss with big seasons. Infante forced his way into the starting lineup early in the campaign and finished with 13 double-digit point games, including a season-high 33 against Academy Charter on Jan. 9. O’Connor shined after transferring from Kellenberg. “[Infante] puts in the work all the time,” Collins said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he sleeps with the basketball right next to his head so once he gets up, he’s dribbling.

Collins is also impressed with the team’s selflessness, who chose to wear that special slogan on the backs of their warmup shirts instead of their names.

FreeporT Freepor Red Devils will run, crash boards

T

he Freeport boys bounced back to respectability in 2018-19, finishing with an overall record of 11-9 and earning a postseason berth. The Red Devils fought hard but fell to county finalist Port Washington in the quarterfinals of the Class AA playoffs.

Most of the members of the team that went on a fourgame tear late in the season, which included a victory over perennial-power Uniondale, were lost to graduation. However, Freeport should be competitive in a conference that figures to be led by Farmingdale, Syosset, and Uniondale.

“We definitely took some positive steps last season,” Freeport head coach Larry Steimer said.

“We’re going to have to control the tempo of the game. As long as we apply pressure and keep the ball moving, we should fine.

We can’t get caught up playing offense in the half court. We need to score in transition.”

The Red Devils welcome back senior point guard Tah’jae Jones who suffered an injury and missed the second half of last season.

Jones shoots and distributes the ball well, and has a great motor.

His ability to play tenacious defense sets the tone.

Justin Norman, the leading scorer from a talented JV, forms a great tandem with Jones. Norman is lightning quick and can shoot from just about anywhere. Danyel St. Louis is another junior guard who can handle the ball, take it to the rack, or find an open teammate. St. Louis is a glove on defense.

hard. Senior Sherrard Bishop is tough in the paint and a talented rebounder. Junior Isaiah Bien-Amie is a hard-working player who does a little of everything.

Junior Joshua Hazzard is a tireless performer who likes to get up and down the floor. Hazzard should be one of the key components on the defensive end of the court. Amir Muhajir is an absolute beast with extraordinary leaping ability. Muhajir is long and fast, and can block shots with the best of them.

LADy DEviLs BoAst iNtEREstiNg MAkEUp It was another strong season on the hardwood for the Freeport girls. The Lady Red Devils enjoyed a streak that saw them win 12 of 13 games on their way to a 16-5 overall campaign. The season came to a halt with a loss to Syos-set in the Class AA semifinals.

The team returns its top scor-er and rebounder in senior Taylor Abraham, but must replace an experienced tandem of talented guards. With several newcomers in the mix, there will certainly be some growing pains, but Freeport should be one of those teams that gets stronger as the season goes along.

“I like to think we’ll be able to compete for the top spot in our league, but there are a lot of unknowns,” head coach Meredith Jones said. “We’ll be as good as our guards progress. We have the talent, but we lack experience in the backcourt. I’ve been telling them to just go out and play and enjoy it.”

Abraham, a six-year varsity performer, should be one of the county’s top players. She has the diversity to dominate in the paint or score from the perimeter.

Abraham, who recently committed to play at Saint Peter’s University, is

an excellent rebounder who can block shots or force opponents to adjust their trajectory.

Tyler Hawkins, who will play soccer at NYU, is a phenomenal athlete who can rebound and run the floor.

Hawkins, an AllConference honoree in 2018-19, has improved her perimeter game.

Yulianna Frometa-Gomez is a hard-nosed senior and the team’s most experienced guard. She will handle point guard responsibilities.

Hewlett Bulldogs aim for playoff return

H

ewlett’s run of 14 consecutive appearances in the Nassau Class A playoffs ended last season when the Bulldogs finished 6-8 in Conference A-II and fell one win shy of making the tournament.

“We weren’t consistent enough,” said head coach Bill Dubin. “This year we’re getting back to old fashioned Hewlett basketball. We’re going to be fundamentally sound, get the ball inside and play strong defense.

That’s what brought us success in the past.”

Hewlett is part of arguably the toughest conference in Class A and will face South Side, Jericho, Roosevelt, Roslyn, Division and Glen Cove twice apiece. “Our conference includes five historical playoff teams and we can’t take anything for granted,” Dubin said.

“Every game will be a battle.”

The Bulldogs return a decent amount of varsity experience, including senior All-County guard Brett Karkus. An excellent outside shooter who can defend against forwards at the opposite end, Karkus averaged 18 points per game last season and is the go-to guy on offense. “Teams are going to focus on stopping him, but Brett has the potential to post a tripledouble at any time,” Dubin said.

“He’s a tremendous shooter who can also rebound and pass.”

The epitome of the team’s blue-collar attitude is senior center Jonny Miller, a three-sport athlete who can rebound, defend and block shots. “He’s a hard-nosed player who’s smart and tough,” Dubin said. “He’s our glue.”

Senior forward Darren Spencer is expected to crack the starting five after contributing as a reserve a year ago. He brings

good size and can rebound and hit a mid-range jumper. Junior Sam Vanunu spent the majority of last season at the JV level and is ready to take the next step. An X-factor in the frontcourt is senior Laurent Dorviller, the starting goalie for the soccer team getting his first taste of organized basketball.

Junior Jesse Korkos and freshman Ryan Weiss can make things happen in the backcourt. Korkos returns as the starting point guard and can shoot and distribute, while Weiss is a reliable perimeter threat with half a season of varsity experience under his belt.

LadY BuLLdOgS PRIMEd TO MakE NOISE The Lady Bulldogs showed some inexperience but took considerable steps forward last season, going 5-9 in conference play in Anthony Scro’s debut as head coach. “We were competitive in most games and it was a great experience for myself and the girls,” he said. “They’re back with a new energy and want to take the program to another level.

We have a lot of two- and threesport athletes and we’ll look to use our athleticism and speed.”

To get into the playoffs, Hewlett will need to finish .500 or better against its competition in Conference A-II. South Side is considered the favorite in a league that includes newcomer Jericho, Roslyn, Roosevelt, Division and Glen Cove. “There’s only 12 conference games now compared to 14 last season and the margin for error is less,” Scro said. “We can’t afford to take anyone lightly.

It’s a tough conference.”

By design, Scro built a difficult non-league slate featuring defending Nassau Class A champion Sewanhaka, Floral Park, Oceanside and East Meadow. “The girls wanted the challenge,” he noted.

Overall, Hewlett remains youthful with more underclassmen than seniors projected to take up court time. Seniors Eileen Pincus, Katie Korin and Tina Cheng will not only provide leadership but also contribute at both ends of the floor. Korin, also a soccer and lacrosse standout, didn’t play basketball last season due to injury. Pincus, who plays volleyball and lacrosse, is a presence in the paint.

Freshman Riley Weiss enters her third varsity campaign and earned Honorable Mention AllCounty recognition after averaging 16 points per game last season.

“She’s a great team player who can shoot the lights out and hawks to the ball on defense,” Scro said.

Lawrence Playoffs the goal for Tornadoes

T

he Golden Tornadoes saw their playoff drought reach three straight seasons in 2018-19 as they endured a roller coaster 8-11 campaign and couldn’t keep up with the likes of frontrunners Lynbrook and Valley Stream South in conference play.

South is no longer a conference rival, and Nassau Class A runner-up Lynbrook lost the bulk of its offensive production, leaving A-IV up for grabs according to Lawrence head coach Lou Robinson. “It’s the best chance we’ve got at making the playoffs since we last made it,” he said. “I feel the conference is pretty wide open.”

In addition to Lynbrook, the Golden Tornadoes will battle Bethpage, Floral Park, North Shore, Plainedge, Valley Stream North and Wantagh twice apiece. The top four teams and any others .500 or better will qualify for the tournament.

“We’ve got a group of hardworking, respectful kids who are a pleasure to be around,” Robinson said. .”We’re stressing defense and we want to build their confidence up during the non-league games.”

Leading the defensive effort will be junior Mikell Henry, a guard/forward combo who started every game last season and averaged 14 points. “He’s a vocal leader who’s challenging everyone in practice,” Robinson said of the All-Conference selection. “He goes hard to the basket and he’s our best defender.”

The offense will be in the hands of senior point guard Nate Manning, who has a good handle and distribution skills. “Last year’s experience should pay off for him,” Robinson said of Manning, who is backed by former JV point guard, 20 — December 19, 2019

Junior Aquan Walker and freshman Terrell Adderley are pushing for major time in the backcourt after strong JV seasons. Walker’s athleticism is “off the charts,” Robinson said, and he plays physical.

Adderley had a 43-point game last season.

In the frontcourt, seniors Jose Crespo and Ayden Dagrin are bound for bigger roles although it’ll be rare when they’ll be on the court at the same time. Freshman center Dexter Robinson is 6-foot-4 and being counted on to rebound along with sophomore Kanye Robinson and senior Tai-liq Thomas.

DIffIcuLT rOaD fOr LaDY TOrNaDOES A daunting conference schedule and inconsistent scoring limited the Lady Golden Tornadoes to a pair of victories last season, but longtime head coach George Klein is looking for an athletic group to be more competitive.

“The difficulty of the schedule doesn’t end,” Klein said. “The one thing I know is we’ll play with a lot of heart and desire. We don’t have a ton of experience, but we’ll try to make up for it with hard work.”

Non-league games against East Rockaway, Clarke and West Hempstead will help Lawrence prepare for the grind in A-IV. Wantagh reached the county championship game last season and figures to be strong along with perennial power North Shore, Floral Park and Plainedge.

Having a freshman point guard with varsity experience is a rare luxury. Andie Adams missed eight games due to an ankle injury last season and her presence on the court and 13 points per outing were sorely missed. “We went from being in a hole to a cavern,” Klein said. “Andie can handle the

ball, sees the floor well and is developing a nice shot. She grew a little during the offseason and is an all-around good player.”

Many others expected to contribute have only JV game experience. Senior guard Janiah Oliver was a part-time varsity starter who has the ability to knock down mid-range shots and boost the offense. Jardina Gomez is another senior guard who uses her quickness to create turnovers, while senior forward Elma Deljanin will look to pick up the rebounding pace

The x-factor is senior guard/ forward Samantha Wilks, who comes off an impressive soccer season. Wilks didn’t play basketball last winter after two solid JV campaigns but is back in the fold.

“She’s very athletic and will help us in a variety of ways,” Klein said.

Juniors Amy Sharin (5-8) and Brooke Ballard are both up from JV and likely to start up front.

They’ll both be keys when it comes to rebounding and getting some put-backs in the paint.

MacArthur M Generals eye a deep playoff run

M

acArthur’s near miraculous comeback in a Nassau Class A outbracket game against Mepham has served as a battle cry for the returning Generals to advance farther in the postseason this winter.

The Generals rallied from a 25-point deficit before Mepham pulled out a 67-63 overtime win to advance to the first round of the county playoffs. Moments after the heartbreaking season-ending defeat, MacArthur head coach Eric Rubin saw a determination from his young team to get right back on the court.

“The guys were ready to play the next day,” Rubin said. “We’re ready to go.”

Reaching the outbracket stage last season was a big step for a MacArthur team that had graduated all five starters from the previous campaign. The Generals marched into the postseason despite being without multi-faceted small forward Rob Lobosco for most of the league schedule. The 6-4 senior helped fuel the comeback against Mepham with 15 points in the second half.

“He is very versatile,” said Rubin of Lobosco. “He can play the wing or the inside.”

Senior shooting guard Max Chmiel is also back after he was the second leading scorer during his first season on varsity last year.

He is joined in the backcourt by point guard PJ DeVecchis who is a capable scorer in addition to quarterbacking the offense.

“He is quick and aggressive,” said Rubin of DeVecchis. “He is a pass-first point guard.”

to the county finals during the fall.

The 6-2 Kelleher achieved double digits seven times.

Dan Schwartz emerged last season as an offensive threat who averaged 8.5 points per game and Rubin is looking for more strides in his second season on varsity. Senor Joe Manfredo, who was starting quarterback on the football team, is the Generals’ toughest defender.

“We’re capable of making the playoffs and hopefully having a home game in the playoffs and seeing how far we can go,” Rubin said. “We have our sights set high.”

LADy GENERALs LEAN ON ExpERiENCE A veteran MacArthur team is fueled for success this winter after a disappointing 2018-19 season.

The Lady Generals ended up with just four wins last season after entering the campaign with high hopes. Sixth-year head coach Dave Radtke saw a renewed focus from his returning players in the offseason looking for a turnaround season that ends in the playoffs.

“They dedicated themselves throughout the summer,” Radtke said. “They work real hard.”

Senior guards Shannon Kilian and Tara Sweeney are leading the charge looking to propel MacArthur into the postseason. Kilian, who will be playing goalie on the Stony Brook women’s soccer team next fall, averaged nearly six points a game as junior last winter.

Sweeney quarterbacks the offense as point guard and is the Generals’ top defender.

Forwards Taylor Ryan and Caroline Johnson provide additional senior leadership after earning plenty of minutes inside as juniors.

Radtke will also turn to guards Hailey Hnis, Alyssa Accordino, Kailey Abatelli, Zoey Quinn, Ryan

Murphy and Rebecca Ingles for his deep lineup that plays a faced-paced style predicated on forcing turnovers.

“We like to play a run and gun style,” Radtke said. “We tire teams out.”

Radtke said his team is comprised of many stellar athletes who are capable of creating transition opportunities off turnovers.

Abatelli, who plays AAU basketball, gives MacArthur a scoring threat from the outside with long-range three-point shooting ability.

“Her range is unlimited,” said

2019-20 HERALD High School Basketball Preview

Malverne Mules bring back integral pieces

T

he Malverne boys have been the class of their conference in recent years with 32 wins in the last two seasons to go with a county Class B title in 2018. But several impact players were lost to graduation last spring, leaving some to wonder if that same magic will carry over into the new season.

Malverne won the Conference B/C regular-season title last season with an impressive 18-3 record (12-1 in conference), aided by a 12-game winning streak that helped the Mules hold off secondplace Cold Spring Harbor. They accomplished that feat despite losing their top two scorers from the previous season to graduation, and now players like D.J. Gaston, Lovens Ulysse, Donovan Ishmael, Ta’Shawn Hampton and Elliot Edwards among others have moved on too.

A key holdover is junior guard Michael Warren, who showed tremendous growth last season by improving his scoring average by seven points to 16.1 and his assists to about 12. Two others include Jayden Seraphin, who averaged almost eight points a game to go with his solid rebounding and sophomore Deandre Blagrove, who associate coach Walter Aksionoff declared could be “devastating” if left open on the block.

The Mules landed two new players who have the potential to make a significant impact, including former West Hempstead guard Duane Bernard, who averaged just under 11 points a game and hit 25 3-pointers last season, and 6-foot-5 parochial school standout Trey Robinson. They’ll be joined by former JV star guard James Ackies, who gained some playoff experience last 32 — December 19, 2019

winter after being called up.

“I would say [it’s a different team] with all the new personnel that came in,” said Aksionoff. “[But] the main cogs are still there.”

The team has developed rivalries with Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay in recent seasons, but Aksionoff views Academy Charter as a legitimate threat in Conference B/C. Carle Place, East Rockaway and Wheatley complete the list of rivals the Mules will face twice apiece. “Academy Charter might be the team to beat,” Aksionoff said. “They had talent.”

CoNfIdeNCe BuIlds foR lAdy Mules Malverne’s girls’ team enters the season with a renewed confidence after slightly improving their record from 2018-19 and returning most of last year’s roster.

The Lady Mules showed promise by winning their first two games for the second straight season and took three more to finish 5-13 (2-9 in Conference B/C.) That was three victories better than the 2017-18 team that suffered through a 16-game losing streak before splitting the final two contests.

Because of that, second-year head coach Amanda Masson believes that even better things are in store for the program.

“I want them to improve in their confidence and let them feel like it’s OK to make mistakes and learn from them,” she said. “Definitely that and their chemistry.

They’re definitely more competitive now.”

Point guard Princia Ulysse may only be a sophomore, but she is likely the team’s most seasoned veteran entering her fourth varsity year. Ulysse’s 7.6 scoring average was almost four points better than the previous season and that

mark could grow even more this winter.

“My expectations with her are really high,” said Masson. “She’s way more confident. She’s realizing that her role is getting way more important each year. I expect a lot from her, especially offensively, just creating plays for the girls.”

Senior Tyela Davidson is also primed for a big year after averaging 7.4 points a game last season, including three 11-point efforts. But her speed and defense is what sets her apart from the other players, according to Masson.

“Defensively, she’s a quick player,” she said. “She’s really fast

MephAM Pirates planning voyage to playoffs

A

fter a strong season that ended in a Nassau Class A second-round playoff exit a year ago, the Pirates feel they have the weapons to go even further.

Their roster contains a strong balance of experience and youth, highlighted by two returning AllConference players. One of them is 6-foot-4 senior Greg Paul, a threeyear varsity player, whose abilities derive from a strong understand of the game. “He’s got a really good basketball IQ,” said head coach Pat Fallon.

The team was bolstered last season by sophomore Richie Vaquero, who was new to the program as a freshman and surprised the coaches with his maturity, particularity on defense. He earned All-Conference honors and Fallon said he only expects his game to improve. “He was like a Christmas gift in November,” Fallon laughed.

Jack Fontanetta, a senior who saved some of his best performances in the postseason last year, is also a returning third-year varsity player who will play a big role.

Returning junior Mekhi Beckett has the ability to be a difference maker as an extremely talented player who could help raise the team to the next level.

Senior Chris Smith and Nick Rheel in the post will also play quality minutes for the Pirates.

Rounding out their depth includes guards Billy Kender and Nick Santiago, both juniors, senior guard Quis Aini, senior Dan Hickey and junior Jake Davis in the post, and junior Rob Caminiti, who can play multiple positions.

Depth should be a strength, particularly with its perimeter shooting, which Fallon said should be an important part of the offense. “We’ll hope to push the ball

whenever we can,” said Fallon.

“Turn our defense into offense.”

Though there is still plenty of room to improve, Fallon said he expects a return to the postseason, with a potential to make a deep run. The Pirates face Calhoun, Herricks, Garden City, Great Neck South, Long Beach, MacArthur and New Hyde Park twice apiece.

“Our goal is to make our way back to the playoffs,” Fallon said.

“We’ll see what happens from there.”

PIEcEs IN PlAcE foR lADy PIRAtEs The co-defending Conference A1 champs will see a mostly returning roster when they open this season, highlighted by reigning Conference Player of the Year Julie Rawlinson, now a junior who will once again be the centerpiece of a team that went 11-1 last year in conference play.

Though head coach Jim Mulvey remained tempered discussing his team, it’s only natural for expectations to be high.

A slashing shooting guard who already is a natural leader, Mulvey said Rawlinson has worked hard on her jump shot.

“She’s really aggressive going to the rim,” Mulvey said. “Now she’s extending it out to make her more of an outside threat also.”

Senior Jillian Mayer, an honorable mention All-County selection, is another diverse player. “She’s just a kid who gives us anything,” Mulvey said. “She’ll play any position, as needed.”

A boon for the team will be the return of senior point guard Lorrie Dellacrocce, who missed last season after tearing her ACL. Boasting many athletic players who are multi-sport athletes, Mulvey said they will use that athleticism to press teams more and try to achieve more points in transition.

Among those talented athletes include returning AllConference choice Ali Heller, a junior who is a strong defender on the wing, and senior Alexa Ferrera, who will get quality minutes at shooting guard.

Two youngsters who saw time on varsity last year as freshmen are Hailey Guerrero and Riley Clark.

Guerrero, said Mulvey, is a slashing guard and solid defender while Clark will be a key presence on the inside.

OceanSIde sailors trend in positive direction

ncoming head coach Ryan Freely inherits a program resuscitated under his predecessor Joe Supple, whose two-year term yielded two Sailors seasons at or above .500 in league and a pair of trips to the playoffs – after Oceanside’s 1-11 league showing the season before his arrival.

With the boys’ squad back on its feet, Freely – a former assistant under Tim Cluess at LIU-Post – believes the moment has come for Oceanside (6-6 in Conference AA-1, 8-12 overall) to take the next step, even as the Sailors – who reached last season’s Class AA quarterfinals – introduce a new cast around lone returning starter and team scoring leader Ralph Amitrano, an All-Conference guard who averaged 12 points per game.

“Supple took this program in the right direction,” Freely said.

“My job now is to help this team to the next level. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be going to the semifinals or farther if our strong returners continue playing well, and our younger guys play their roles.”

Strongest among said returners are the six-foot Amitrano and fellow senior Dimitri Garrett (8.6 ppg), a 6-1 swingman who shares the shooting guard’s propensity to score off the dribble drive and, also like Amitrano, can strike from the perimeter.

“Those two guys will do most of our scoring,” Freely said.

“Angel’s tough as nails; he can rebound with anybody in the league,” Freely said. “Austin’s our smartest player, the definition of a senior leader. Matt can play anything from a four to backup point guard. Logan’s special. When these seniors are gone it’ll be his program.”

Freely recapitulated: “We’ve got senior leaders and younger guys filling gaps. The goal now is going further in the playoffs.”

LADy SAILoRS: ALL hAnDS on DEck In the wake of a seismic setback not entirely unforeseen, Oceanside (3-9 in Conference AA-1, 7-12 overall) will press on without three-time All-County superstar Jamie Behar, who will showcase her talents as a senior at heavily college-scouted Long Island Lutheran High, leaving the limelight fully trained on former All-County and two-time AllConference Lady Sailors forward Gina Contorno.

Staying healthy throughout her club’s second consecutive inju-ry-plagued campaign, Behar won a second straight league scoring title last season (20.8 points per game) – adding 395 points to her 1,000-plus career mark – while Contorno, who missed five games with a torn ACL, was Oceanside’s second-leading scorer with 12.9 ppg.

Leading her squad into AA-1 action, Contorno looks for assistance from second-year point guard Gabby Modzelewski (junior) in her bid to become the Lady Sailors’ second 1,000-point scorer.

The fourth-year starting senior has 643 career points.

“We expect this to be Gina’s breakout year,” head coach Jared

Stoler said. “She really should have been All-County last year, even with the injury. This year it’s her show. She’s probably going to be playing wherever the game dictates as well, not only at forward, which is fine because she can score from anywhere.”

Modzelewski became a starter last winter when senior point guard Katie Morgan went down in a preseason scrimmage, never to return. As Oceanside seeks to accelerate its offense, Stoler said Modzelewski’s mandate is maintaining tempo and feeding Contorno. “Gabby was thrust into a baptism by fire situation last year,” Stoler said. “It was valuable experience that she’ll need. Seaford Vikings need to jell together quickly

eaford entered the new season behind the eight ball with a thin roster that longtime head coach Ralph Rossetti hopes is clicking later this winter.

For the third time in four years, Rossetti was unable to field a full team for preseason practices until after Thanksgiving weekend due to many players taking part in Seaford football’s deep fall run to the Long Island Class IV finals.

Rossetti stressed he is pleased that much of his team has had an opportunity to taste championship success on the football field, but noted the delays have impacted development of the basketball program.

“It’s been tough the last few years because of the fact that we have started so much later than other teams,” said Rossetti, who has won 361 games in 37 years leading the Seaford sidelines. “It is hard enough to develop a new team to begin with and this puts you behind.”

Senior guard Logan Masters provides Rossetti a veteran presence on the floor as a third-year varsity player who averaged 8.1 points per game as a junior and recorded a season-high 22 points in a 71-65 overtime loss to West Hempstead during his junior campaign. Masters was also a football standout who was quarterback during the Vikings’ November push to the Long Island title game this past fall.

“I have no set lineup,” Rossetti said. “It is going to be a rebuilding year and maybe we are a year away from being a playoff team.”

Seaford went 1-11 last year in a challenging Conference A-V, which Rossetti again expects to be tough with other teams returning All County players. The league features Clarke, Friends Academy, Island Trees, Mineola, Locust Valley, Valley Stream South and West Hempstead.

LADy VikiNgs ARE gAiNiNg mOmENtum Seaford head coach Bob Vachris is looking for bigger leaps this season following incremental strides with a largely new team last winter.

The Lady Vikings struggled early on during the 2018/19 campaign after graduating nearly all its scoring from the previous season before making enough progress to earn to a postseason appearance. A 57-47 Nassau County Class A outbracket loss to Clarke added further fuel for the returning Seaford players to reach bigger heights.

“Last year they had to compete and this year they have to contend,” said Vachris of his higher goals this season. “We did very well in the summer league and I think we have a chance to be a very good team.”

Senior 6-0 center Jamie McSorley returns for her fourth season on varsity after averaging nearly 10 points a game. Versatile 5-11 forward Katelyn Winter, a former starting point guard at Seaford Middle school, provides an additional senior presence in the frontcourt.

Seaford will also have an experienced scoring presence leading the Vikings’ fast-paced

offense in junior point guard Taylor Sylvester, who averaged 8.7 points a game and tallied a season-high 29 in a 61-53 win against West Hempstead. Junior guard Amanda Williams provides a strong veteran defensive presence in the backcourt after earning valuable minutes as sophomore.

Vachris has a large sophomore class who received varsity experience as freshmen led by shooting guard Jamie Horodecki, who is a threat from three-point range. Sewanhaka Sky’s the limit for talented Indians

O

ver the past decade, the reputation of Sewanhaka boys’ basketball has grown as much as any program in the county. The Indians averaged 15 wins per season over the past four years, and have come narrowly close to playing for a county championship.

In 2018-19, Sewanhaka advanced to the quarterfinal round, but were edged by top-seeded Elmont. Despite losing four starters, a young, talented team will look to continue to make some noise in Nassau Class A. “I really have no idea what our ceiling is,” head coach Jay Allen said. “We’re probably going to look young at times. As a coaching staff, we’ll have a lot of teaching to do. We may have more potential than ever before, but you know what they say about potential.”

Senior Preston Harts is versatile enough to play nearly any position on the court. He’s capable from the perimeter, takes the ball to the rack, and even plays with his back to the basket.

The Indians will play a system that utilizes two point guards.

Sophomore Kamren Denhart performs like an upperclassman.

Denhart has a great motor and excellent basketball IQ. Junior Brian Lowry is an athletic guard who plays with great poise. His ability on the defensive end of the floor will help to get the Indians going in transition.

Ryan Joseph gives Sewanhaka size in the front court. Joseph is tough on the boards and blocks shots. Fellow junior Frantz Compere should be a big contributor on both ends. He’s as tough as nails in the paint, and has a nice midrange game.

is a talented distributor who may emerge as the team’s best perimeter shooter. Sophomore Tyler Harts is getting better every day. Harts can fill in at any of four positions.

Junior Sebastien Balthazard has improved considerably. Allen thinks Balthazard has a big upside.

Sophomore J’den Lloyd is a combo guard who should be a factor this winter and in the future.

The Indians compete in A2 along with defending county champ Manhasset, Elmont, Carey, Great Neck North, Kennedy and Valley Stream Central.

CoUNty, L.I. tItLEs foR LADy INDIANs After years of knocking on the door, the Sewanhaka girls kicked it down in 2018-19. The Indians won the league title, went on to capture the first county championship in program history, rolled past Mount Sinai to earn Long Island supremacy, and fell just a basket short of advancing to the state final.

The Indians lost about 90 percent of their scoring to graduation, but return a pair of starters and a group of girls who gained valuable experience practicing against some of the county’s top players. There will be few easy nights for Sewanhaka.

“We’re going to take it day by day,” head coach Alex Soupios said.

“I’m excited to see how it shakes out, and who is going to step into what role. We’re not going to get caught up in looking ahead.”

Senior guard Samirah Akinwunmi is an outstanding defender who has worked hard to be more consistent on the offensive end.

Akinwunmi’s performance during the team’s playoff run leads one to believe she has a big season ahead of her.

Angelica Lazo takes over at

the point. The left handed senior worked hard on her ball handling in the offseason. Lazo’s focus and demeanor serve as a calming influence. Sophomore Laura Marcia-Bodden will see time in the backcourt.

Forward Mia Weinschreider, a four-year varsity player, is an intelligent player who defends well in the paint. Weinschreider will be asked to provide a little more offense as a senior. Junior Lexi Schneidmuller is a gritty forward who does whatever it takes.

Nia Lariosa had some big moments in the playoffs as a junior.

South Si SiDe Cyclones deeper and more experienced

espite a relatively youthful roster, South Side managed to win 11 of 14 games against Conference A-II rivals last season to put a championship banner on the wall. The Cyclones split a pair of playoff games and are looking for the postseason experience and a deeper bench to help them go far in Nassau Class A. “We have more experience and we’re athletic,” head coach Jerry D’Angelo said. “Our expectations are high. Our incoming seniors did a nice job during the offseason and they’re the foundation of the team.

“The one thing I’ve got to say is there’s a lot to like about a lot of teams in the conference,” he added. “We know we’re going to be in for some battles.”

South Side lacks size, D’Angelo said, but will make up for it with quickness and teamwork.

It will face Hewlett, Jericho, Roosevelt, Roslyn, Glen Cove and Division twice apiece.

The Cyclones return three award winners, including AllCounty selection Eamon McGowan at forward. A three-year starter and captain, McGowan averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds last winter and played for the Nassau all-stars over the summer. “He’s difficult to defend,” D’Angelo said.

“He was our second-leading threepoint shooter and he can also do damage down low.”

Senior guard Quinn Shannon, who earned All-Conference honors, dialed long distance more than 60 times to lead the perimeter attack.

“He has a quick release and great range,” D’Angelo said. “He’s worked on getting to the basket more and becoming multidimensional.”

McDonald’s traits. He’s 6-foot-4 and comes off an All-Conference campaign. “He’ll battle with the bigs and does a lot of things well,” D’Angelo said. Senior Griffin O’Shea is also 6-4 and runs the floor. He’ll see major minutes against sizeable opponents. Providing depth is junior Owen Mullen, who’s aggressive on the boards and popped in 44 points in a JV game.

Seniors Ryan Ledwith and Antonio Scotto lead the depth chart at point guard, with junior Thomas Kelly also in the mix. Senior Jake Murphy has a unique skill set and is pushing to crack the starting five.

HIgH HOpES SurrOuNd LadY CYCLONES Fresh off a 17-win season that ended with a loss to eventual county champion Sewanhaka in the Nassau Class A quarterfinals, South Side brings back plenty of experience and talent and figures to be among the leading contenders.

“We should be one of the top teams in Class A,” said head coach Dan Ferrick, who guided the Lady Cyclones to a runner-up finish in Conference A-II and a first-round playoff victory over two-time defending champion Elmont. “We’re returning a nice group,” he added. “Our JV won 15 games last season and we’re looking for all 11 girls on the roster to contribute.”

Balanced scoring and defensive pressure is often the theme of Ferrick’s teams and this season should be no different. “We want to play up-tempo,” he said. “We have good size and perimeter shooting.”

Senior All-County guard Katie McMahon can score from almost anywhere on the floor and has great leaping ability, Ferrick noted.

She’s a four-year varsity player and will serve as a captain. “She’s the best athlete in the conference in my

opinion,” he said. “She has excellent court awareness and can pass.”

Senior Arriana McLean is another captain who spent a lot of time on the court during the offseason. An All-Conference selection, she’s worked to become more of an offensive threat to go with her defensive and rebounding skills.

At 6-foot-1, junior Sydney Rathjen often creates a matchup advantage and is capable of scor scoring in double figures on any given night. She’s another returning All-Conference forward who runs the court well. Sophomore Demi Karanosas, up from JV, is smooth on the offensive end and strengthens the frontcourt group.

V.S. CenTral Eagles look to take flight

T

he Eagles had a positive showing in their inaugural season in Nassau Class A, finishing in second place in conference play and winning 13 games overall including a playoff matchup with North Shore.

With a good deal of experience back, albeit not much size, Central head coach Hayward Alfred is looking for the program’s success to continue on the heels of the school’s best football season in about 25 years.

“It’s going to take a little while before some of the guys get into basketball shape after a long football season,” Alfred said.

“What they did on the football field was great. Our chemistry is building. We’ll definitely compete again and hopefully we’ll have our own share of success.”

Defending county champion Manhasset, perennial power Elmont and Sewanhaka comprise part of a challenging Conference A-II slate for the Eagles, who will look to play at a fast pace while keeping turnovers to a minimum, Alfred said. “We have to protect the ball,” he noted.

Senior All-Conference returnees Jaicob Tejeda and Tyler Ray lead the way. Tejeda is a 6-foot-2 forward with the ability to post a double-double on any given night.

“He’s a tough-as-nails two-way player,” Alfred said. Ray, a guard, serves as the team’s best perimeter shooting threat and can also attack the rim. He averaged 15 points per game last winter and can make things happen on the defensive end as well.

Tough on the glass and tough to beat defensively, senior Nate Grimsley is a power forward who can glide and score in transition.

Rence Areola, who doesn’t bring any varsity experience but has all the tools to be a solid point guard. “The speed of the game is the biggest thing he’ll need to get used to,” Alfred said. “He’s a good decision-maker who can score and distribute.”

Senior Chris Lewis and junior Wakeem Jackson are athletic guards with strong skill sets. Lewis is a tenacious defender in the mix to start, while Jackson could serve an important role as the first player off the bench.

POTENTIaL hIgh fOr LadY EagLES If what the Lady Eagles showed head coach Malyssa Thorngren for openers, it could be a very exciting season for a squad that went 7-5 in conference games last season.

Central rallied form 15 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Plainview in the non-conference opener. Junior Britney Russell, a returning starting guard, hit the winning bucket. She’s a strong spot shooter whose biggest contributions will come as a scrappy defender and on the boards.

“We’re mixing in some new players and they’re jelling together nicely,” Thorngren said. “It’s going to be interesting to see what’s in store for us in another new conference. I’m excited about our potential.”

Among the obstacles in Conference A-II are defending county champion Sewanhaka, recent multi-season champs Elmont, Kennedy and Manhasset.

Central’s most accomplished returnee is senior All-County center Janay Legagneur, who poured in 18 points per game and pulled down a dozen rebounds per contest last season. She’s 6-1 and in her fourth varsity campaign.

“Janay plays her heart out and

does everything for us,” Thorngren said. “She’s great around the rim, has several moves down low and good shooting range.”

Unsure who was going to run the show due to a transfer situation, some good news arrived during the offseason when Thorngren learned Farrah Pitt enrolled in the district. The junior point guard brings the kind of skills that make everyone around her better. “She’s our spark and our energy,” Thorngren said. “She has great composure and she’s been spectacular so far.”

Depth is an area under construction with sophomore forward Faizah Munawar expected to serve as the first player off the bench.

“The girls like to play at a fast tempo,” Thorngren said. “We just have to control it.”

V.S. NorTH Spartans hunt for secondary scoring

T

he 2018-19 season proved to be a frustrating one for the Valley Stream North boys as inconsistency, injuries and suspensions resulted in missing the playoffs by one game. But can an emerging superstar, an infusion of young talent and a slightly revamped conference be enough to return to the postseason?

Doing so will be still be a challenge as this year’s Spartans will be markedly younger than the 7-12 squad (4-8 in Conference A4) that took the floor last winter. The formula will also remain the same with a more reliance on speed and quickness instead of size.

“We got some good young talent,” said head coach Dan Achatz. “We’ve got five sophomores.

We lack in size and we hope to make up for that with speed. We always have a situation where it seems like we don’t have size so it’s something we’ll have to overcome.”

What the Spartans don’t lack is an explosive offensive player.

Senior C.J. Parris worked hard on his jump shot two summers ago and it paid off in spades with a 23.8 scoring average, which was more than double his sophomore campaign (11.4). He had 15 games of 20 or more points, including a season-high 32 in a win over Lawrence on Feb. 2.

“That was the biggest part of his game that was missing,” Achatz said of Parris’ jumper. “He’s got speed, he can penetrate, he can finish [and] jump through the sky, but he tied in that jump shot and the 3-point shot. That helped him out big time.”

Conference A4 will have a different look as Valley Stream South, which beat the Spartans in the regular-season finale to end their playoff aspirations, moved down to A5. Conference A3 teams Bethpage and Plainedge also moved down will round out the eight-team group. Floral Park, Lawrence, Lynbrook, North Shore and Wantagh remained.

BAlANCed lAdy SpARtANS AIm to ImpRove Wins have been few and far between for the girls’ team in recent seasons and head coach George Karahalios is optimistic that a more seasoned roster can result in victories being more com-monplace.

The Lady Spartans went just 2-15 in 2018-19 and have won just five games combined over the last three campaigns. This year’s roster has a good mix of players from all grades, including two in eighth, and Karahalios is hoping that that, combined with a competitive finish to last season, is a start to the program trending back upward.

“We played well towards the end of the stretch,” he said. “We were a lot more sound offensively and defensively. I told the underclassmen that we need to transfer everything we were doing at the end of the season and build off of that confidence.”

One noticeable change towards the end of last season, according to Karahalios, was a more willingness to take the open shot rather than pass the ball during halfcourt plays. North averaged almost 28 points in 17 contests and Karahalios is confident that number will rise to a more respect-

able figure.

“We could go through the whole 30 seconds and not take a shot,” he said. “I would have to plead with them for someone to shoot the ball. But now I don’t have to.”

Freshman center Kayla Santo played like an established veteran last season and led the team with a 6.3 scoring average and nine 3-pointers made last season. She had four double-digit point games, including a season-high 14 in the team’s first win of the season over Calhoun on Dec. 14.

WesT HempsTead Rams aim for better results

hings haven’t been rosy for the West Hempstead boys in recent times. The Rams have been in nearly every game they’ve played over the past few seasons, but their inability to generate consistent scoring has led to countless narrow defeats.

West Hempstead doesn’t return a slew of players who contributed, but it is hopeful that hard work in the offseason will lead to much better results this winter.

“We’re coming off a disappointing season and looking to improve,” head coach Ed Cosgrove said. “It’s going to take some time.

We have athletic kids who can get up and down, but we’re not there yet. We’re going to have to get baskets in transition if we’re going to be successful.”

The Rams should get a lot from a player who averaged just four points per contest as a junior.

Forward Jorge Grant put in a ton of work to improve his game, and he could emerge as one of the conference’s biggest surprises.

Grant is physically imposing and has improved in nearly every facet of the game.

Junior Brian Pierre-Louis is a fleet-footed junior who likes to get out on the break. Pierre-Louis and Grant should be a solid tandem in the frontcourt for West Hempstead.

Senior Isaiah Henriquez will run the point. Henriquez didn’t see a lot of time as a junior, but he’s quick, handles the ball well, and is a perimeter threat. He’ll be joined in the backcourt by senior Christian Alvarez. Though relatively inexperienced, Alvarez is athletic and has the ability to fill it up from behind the arc.

the basket. Cosgrove is hopeful that Rajpatty will continue to im-prove as the season goes along.

“We need to get to a point where we’re not walking the ball up the court,” Cosgrove said. “Can we get enough wins to make a push for the playoffs? It remains to be seen. We know we have to improve if we want to be in the mix.”

LADy RAMs RELy oN NiNE Playing among some of Nassau Class A’s stronger teams made life in Conference A-V pretty difficult for West Hempstead in 2018-19. Four league opponents earned postseason berths, three of which won 15 games or more.

Only a heartbreaking 75-69 overtime loss to Clarke in an outbracket game left West Hempstead on the outside looking in at the playoffs.

With only nine on the roster, the Rams can’t afford injuries or foul trouble this season, but they should have enough to be in the mix for a playoff berth come February. Island Trees and Locust Valley figure to be among the teams fighting for the league title.

“We have the size to be tough on the backboards, but we have to be able to finish,” West Hempstead head coach Chris Van Kovics said. “If we take care of the ball and make good decisions, we should be competitive.”

Senior Jenna Eivazi, an athletic guard who can hit from the perimeter or take the ball to the basket, returns for her fourth season on the varsity. Eizazi has averaged double figures each of the past three seasons, and will once again be one of the team’s go-to players.

Isabel Tavarez came up as a freshman and gave the Rams a boost. Tavarez is a threat from downtown, and she’s not afraid to

put it up. Fellow sophomore Amanda Healy takes the reins at point guard. Healy’s presence allows Eivazi and Tavarez room to create from the wings.

Senior Korrina Plair and sophomore Sanaia Estime should be a handful for opponents in the frontcourt. Plair is an athletic forward capable of being a doubledouble machine. Estime is a strong rebounder who played well as a freshman.

Sophomore Isabella Torres provides depth and rebounding at the wing. Senior Tamiya Jean rounds out the roster. Jean gives West Hempstead another perimeter threat.
