Glen Cove A Big Red Fresh Start
T
By J.D. FREDA
he Glen Cove baseball program underwent a systemic change this offseason, as longtime varsity head coach Jon Dolecki stepped down from the position and former junior varsity head coach George Kearns steps in to lead a group of young returning ballplayers to a redemption year. After a 1-17 season where the team batting average sunk under .200, Kearns and assistant coach Tom DeCarlo’s early practices have been focused on cultivating a team morale and identity. “I’m really trying to emphasize togetherness,” Kearns said. “I see a difference in the guys’ mentality already.” The core of this young team returns this year, as senior short-

stop/pitcher Michael Capobianco and senior first baseman/outfielder/pitcher Cameron Fillipone will look to lead this group to a successful season. “These two guys will be very instrumental in what we do this year, especially as our two go-to pitchers,” Kearns said. Vying for the third rotational spot will be Anthony Rant, who saw some time working off the rubber as a starter for Glen Cove last season. Rant will also be a key part of this Big Red offense, as he was the team leader in batting average a season ago with some good speed on the basepaths to pair. Jared Venekas will also be in the mix for a rotational spot, but will also be looked to for relief work. Chris Capobianco, Michael’s cousin, will be a key part of this team’s offense as a middle lineup guy looked upon to drive in runs. Having been the JV coach, Kearns is familiar with Chris Capobianco’s poten potential. “He was probably my best player on JV when he was there,” Kearns said. “He’s been working extremely hard over the off offseason.” Junior Kieran Calderon will see some time at first base on the days where Fil Fillipone is the starter. Junior John Luzynski will catch and be a key lefty hitter in this lineup “We’re going to be leaning on John HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL / SOFTBALL PREVIEW
as the quarterback of this defense as the catcher,” Kearns said. Kearns also mentioned Tyler Buehre as a solid utility piece for the Big Red. As this team identity grows in the early preseason, Kearns wants his message to be clear. “Don’t get down on your teammates. Any error is a team error,” Kearns said. “Bust your butts in practice and most of all, have fun with it.”

Glen Cove Lady Big Red return infield
T
he Glen Cove softball team is returning a large crop of talent to lead the way in Nassau Conference A-IV for the 2018 season. A whopping 10 of its 13 roster members will be juniors with ample on-field experience from last year’s squad. Senior Nafeesah Ali, Glen Cove’s primary pitcher a year ago, will return to the mound this year to lead the Lady Big Red on the defensive front. Behind her will be junior third basewoman Angela McCarthy, junior shortstop Jaynise Espinal, junior second basewoman Micaela Costello, and junior first basewoman Alyssa Schmidt. Offensively, the Lady Big Red will produce a lot of runs coming from these four girls as well. Costello was the leadoff hitter for this group a year ago, mixing her speed with a quick, slicing bat to make for a constant on-base threat. Schmitt, one of the team’s middle-lineup hitters, came up with timely RBIs for her squad last year and will look to do so again with improved bat speed and plate discipline over the offseason. “Having Micaela leading off with her speed, and having girls hit behind her that can get her home is a positive,” coach Angela Zupa said. “Schmitt hit some big RBIs last year and has a good bat to have in the lineup.” Patrolling center field looks to be freshman Brianna Malvino, a first-year Glen Cove student with potential to grow in the system and be a go-to player in the future. Along with Zupa, this program runs through assistant coach Kim Kessel. According to Zupa, Kessel has a connection to the players year in and year out that is unmatched. “She has a knack for meshing TO ADVERTISE CALL 516-569-4000

ference and get back to Conference III next year,” Zupa said. “The girls are ready to go… Give 100 perent, put the work in, have fun, and the results will come.”

Locust Va VaLLey Falcons bring strong work ethic
B
By J.D. FREDA
uying in to the team idea and working hard was the story for the Locust Valley baseball team throughout the offseason. Meeting nearly four days a week for workouts over the winter bred a mindset that the Falcons would not be outworked en route to success. “The kids have bought in well,” Falcons coach John Lonardo said. “I’ve had most of these guys in the program for three or four years so they know the program well.” As for preparation, the team has been on the field practicing everything from baserunning to situational fielding drills and anything in between. “I’m a big believer in fundamentals,” Lonardo said. “With your fundamentals being that sharp, you can make the ordinary play extraordinary.” Extraordinary play is no stranger to Locust Valley ace Sean Hogan, a senior who is committed to play college baseball at Western New England. “Pitching is definitely a strength for us, and having Sean out there for the first day is huge,” Lonardo said. Locust Valley also has another college commit in shortstop/pitcher Thomas Eletto, who will be playing his college ball at the University of New Haven. Eletto will be the team’s third rotational tarter with Steven Proko working off the rubber in the middle game of the series. “I believe Proko is poised to have a breakout

year,” Lonardo said. Sophomore Christian Eletto is an infielder and relief pitcher with some breakout potential of his own. “He’s going to have a big sophomore season,” Lonardo said. Senior first baseman Matt Dellaquilla is a heavy-hitting bat for Lonardo that will ook to produce a lot of RBI’s from the cleanup spot. “He’s worked really hard over the offseason,” Lonardo said. The Falcons have a pair of
solid senior relief pitchers who will see a lot of time this season in Owen Letter and Liam Bauman. Catcher Holt Ryals will assume a leadership role as the team’s primary catcher. “I think if we can finish games and keep our composure in those fifth, sixth and seventh innings, we’ll do well,” Lonardo said. “That all comes with experience and confidence.”

Locust VVALLey Lady Falcons face challenging schedule
A
fter just one loss in Conference ABC-III a season ago, the Locust Valley softball team reups for another successful season under coach Nadine Pacifico. Meeting and working out over the offseason prepared the Lady Falcons for their first crop of scrimmages and non-league games. As for what Pacifico is looking for in this early stretch, she wants to see a mixture of what they’ve been working on and just going out there to win. “I want to see a little bit of both when it comes to sharpening their fundamentals and playing competitively in these early meetings,” Pacifico said. With a Conference III realigned with some stiffer competition, Locust Valley will rely on its sophomore star pitcher Paige O’Brien to keep opposing lineups in check and allow her offense to take early leads. Originally pulled up to varsity as an eighth-grader, O’Brien was pegged by Pacifico as the team’s future star pitcher. She received All-Conference honors in her debut season, and All-County honors last year. “We were 13-0 with her on the mound last season,” Pacifico said. “The one game we lost was a game where she unfortunately got sick.” Offensively, O’Brien hits cleanup with sophomore Ava Hoehne hitting behind her. Hoehne is a solid contact hitter with a little pop in her bat as well. “She really comes up with clutch situational hits for us,” Pacifico said. TO ADVERTISE CALL 516-569-4000
Ava Hoehne, Paige O’Brien, Carolina Faraday
Junior catcher Caroline Faraday is the third hitter on the lineup cards and has a nose for getting on base. “She is a great contact hitter and her on-base-percentage is phenomenal,” Pacifico said. Pacifico subscribes to the idea that her girls should be prepped to play their respective position and with familiarity comes mastery, as she is not one to make many defensive switches, especially in the infield. As for this season with the realigned conference makeup, Pacifico and the Lady Falcons want to compete for every single game
like it’s their last. “We are going to go into every game like it’s the championship game, every single one,” Pacifico said. “It’s a much more difficult conference, there are bigger softball programs than we are…but my girls work really, really hard.” Locust Valley will face South Side, Bethpage, East Rockaway, Wantagh and Valley Stream North twice apiece in conference play.

North Shore Vikings eye conference top spot
A
By J.D. FREDA
long, grueling offseason of hard work brings the North Shore Vikings baseball team to the dawn of a new season, just one year removed from failing to win the conference title, a feat that it had accomplish for four years in a row prior. The road back began in December when the team began to meet for weight room sessions and conditioning workouts. “We’ve been doing everything: good weight room sessions, conditioning, hitting in the cage and using videotape analysis to mold our swings,” coach Scott Lineman said. The fundamentals being sharpened is the prime priority for Lineman at the moment. “We’re really pushing to be aggressive,” Lineman said. “We’re looking to create a controlled violent swing.” Lineman also believes his young group of guys were a bit tentative in their approaches at the plate a year ago, and looks to right the ship. The Vikings’ senior leader is Anthony Carleo, a true student of the game in his coach’s estimation. Coming off of a 4 HR, 20 RBI 2017 season, Carleo unfortunately underwent surgery in the fall, but has now been cleared to swing. He will be a huge power threat as a DH for the Vikings in 2018. Senior shortstop Jake Walton will bat fifth and be another RBI threat. “Jake’s a big, strong kid that got better and stronger over the winter,”
14 — April 5, 2018
Dan Livoti, Jake Walton, Matt Lewin
Lineman said. Senior outfielder Sean Hehn, junior outfielder Matt Lewin, and junior catcher/ pitcher Dan Livoti all have great contact hitting ability and a knack for reaching base. Senior Kyle Commando assumes a leadership role on this team that Lineman believes is because he will do “absolutely anything to help this team win.” Junior David Aufiero will return and assume the ace role for this Vikings ballclub. 3-1 last year with a few different pitches to work with, Aufiero has the “stuff” to be a consis-
tent pitcher for this team. Along with Assistant Coach Rob Gates who works extensively with the pitching staff, Lineman wants to get his team back to its league title-winning ways. “Reliable pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense: that’s what we need to get there,” Lineman said. North Shore’s conference rivals are Floral Park, Division, Bethpage, Lynbrook, Lawrence and Valley Stream North.

North Shore Lady Vikings have lots to like
I
mpressive in its 2017 campaign, the North Shore softball team returns with a formidable team comprised of a mostly junior class with talent spread across all grades. Junior left fielder Amber Diaz impressed mightily last season, owning the third-highest batting average in Nassau County while also smacking 8 home runs, tied for the county’s most. “Amber will be batting third for us and will be a key to making this offense go,” coach Toni Papetti said. Seven of the team’s 12 players are juniors, and that class gained key expeexpe rience last year on a playoff team. Junior Jade Diaz is a skilled utilutil ity player that comes in handy, her coach says. “It’s really nice to have

Jade be able to play different positions for us,” Papetti said. Juniors Zena Kontorouhas and Taylor Berry also look to play massive roles on this team. Berry, the center fielder, boasts a diverse skillset that has her coach lauding her ability. “Taylor could do it all,” Papetti said. “Hit, run, good power, you name it.” In preparation for the first few games on the schedule, Papetti’s girls have been “weathering the storm” quite literally. With the recent nor’easters dumping snow and bring bringing cold weather along the coasts of Long Island, North Shore has been making due with what they’ve been given and been practicing through the conditions. “We’re braving the storms, and learning how to hit the ball with cold hands” Papetti said. “It’s been a process but our first few games will probably still be in cold weather…we’re getting accustomed to it.” This Lady Vikings team hit over .400 as a team in 2017, and Papetti doesn’t HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL / SOFTBALL PREVIEW
want to stop at that. “I want us to hit even bet better,” Papetti said. “It’s all about confi confidence.” Papetti drove home the idea of hithit ting hard, let line drives into the gaps and letting the baserunning do the rest. Also, the Lady Vikings will be playing for a cause this year. They have teamed up with preven “Hope-for-a-day”, a suicide prevention organization and will be raising money throughout the season and at an April 14 Little League clinic for the cause. They will be wearing purple and teal socks and shoelaces throughout the season for the cause.

Oyster Bay Baymen rebuild with young talent
O
By J.D. FREDA
yster Bay baseball has a possible ‘first’ this season. Every member of the one-loss 2017 Baymen, a large group of seniors, has graduated and left the program. Now, a young group graduates from the junior varsity program to coach Jeff Schierek’s varsity and are rearing to build their own team identity. “This year, we’ll have no kids with varsity experience, however, we had quite a few juniors play on JV last year and they worked hard and waited their turn to get here; now they’re here,” Schierek said. Offseason work and early practices have been focused on preparing the kids for the varsity level. One aspect that Schierek wants to hammer home is being aggressive at the plate. “I subscribe to the idea that you will have one good pitch to hit an at-bat, and it could be the first one,” Schierek said. “I’m really focusing on ‘in at-bat’ adjustments and putting the ball in play with two strikes by any means necessary.” The Baymen will be led by their No. 1 starting pitcher Ryan Jarvis. A tall right-handed hurler with a high-release point, Jarvis will work off the rubber with a mid 70’s fastball complimented by some offspeed pitches. Senior DJ Albro will be looked upon for some slick fielding and relief work. Chaminade transfer Thomas Fletcher will also work out of the bullpen for the Baymen. while the third spot is up for grabs, Schierek said. Sophomore Eddie Clark will also look to make an imprint as a leader of the infield as the shortstop. Although lacking varsity experience, Schierek says that the kids are working hard and doing everything they need to do to be successful. “They’re like worker bees,” Schierek said. “They have that mentality.” The Baymen will also be playing for a cause this year, as they will be raising money for 911 vets, a charity that helps
provide aid to local veterans. They will be wearing camo hats at every home game. The Baymen are part of a conference that includes Malverne, Wheatley, East Rockaway and Carle Place. The teams will face each other four times on the year.

Oyster BAyy Lady Baymen seek continued success Lillian’s sister and sophomore out outfielder Jamie Galasso has progressed very well and is a great hitter in her own right. “Lil and Jamie are both ‘big impact’ players,” Wink said. “They’re going to be important in this offense.” Reilly Iles, Katrina Zucconi, Taylor Wilson, Skylar McEvoy and Sophie Agostinello will all be key contributors to this team as well. Wink preaches aggressiveness in all aspects of the game. “We want to be aggressive fielding, throwing strikes, baserunning, and hitting early in the count,” Wink said. “We want to be so well prepared that we know what pitch to hit and when an offspeed pitch is coming… we want to hit with a pitch pitcher’s mentality.” This team is comprised of talented hitters and selfless play. “We have girls that will play any position that is asked of them to help the team win,” Wink said. Also, Wink does not believe in electing team captains, instead she chooses

fter a successful 2017 season, the Oyster Bay softball team returns with some key pieces from last year’s squad. Sophomore pitcher Kristen Aasheim suc will look to build off of her very successful 11-win freshman campaign this season. Aasheim will have a different partner behind the plate, though, as junior Mikayla Cornelious will look to assume the role. “(Mikayla) played a lot in the outfield last year,” coach Victoria Wink said. “But she did catch a game last year out of necessity and we’re excited to see how she takes to it.” Senior third basewoman Lillian Galasso is a good hitter and will make an impact in the middle of this lineup. to let all of her girls lead and create an environenviron ment where team success breeds individual success. A county finalist just a year ago, Wink says she wants to take this season game by game, staying sucsuc cessful without losing focus. assis Wink also credits assistant coach Jen Iles with the success of the team. “I love working with her, we have HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL / SOFTBALL PREVIEW
