he skies light up like the Fourth of July every year in Baldwin — but usually one month after the nation celebrates its independence, when the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Baldwin Day celebration. The festivities start with a free picnic and ends with a concert. For the grand finale, residents gather at Baldwin Park to watch the fireworks. Free activities are offered throughout the day, including face-painting, pony rides, raffles, games and more. The fireworks show started in 2009, and made Baldwin one of the few nonvillages in Nassau County to host such a show. Since then, it’s become a muchanticipated event in the community. The spectacular fireworks show concludes Baldwin Day each year.

While they waited for hot dogs, Samory and Kalia Fecu filled in a puzzle at the 2017 Baldwin Day celebration.

he Baldwin Union Free School District includes almost all of the unincorporated area known as Baldwin, as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. The district measures 4.3 square miles and educates roughly 5,500 students in grades kindergarten through 12, an enrollment that school officials predict will grow over the next few years. There are five elementary schools, one middle school for grades six, seven and eight, and one high school for grades nine to 12. All central administrative services are headquartered in the district office on Hastings Street just west of Milburn Avenue. A five-member elected school board acts as the community’s representative to the district and is responsible for its annual operating budget. Board members serve three-year terms without pay. Board elections and budget votes are conducted in May. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Board meetings for the 20182019 school year are updated on the Baldwin School District website baldwinschools.org. In 2013, 92 percent of students graduated high school who started ninth grade four years earlier. The figure represents the most recent year for which the New York State Education Department has released information. About 300 Baldwin residents live in the Oceanside School District, including those who live on Cheshire Drive, Foxhurst Avenue, Hillside Court, Park View Place and Alfred Court.

When traveling on the South Shore, it’s easy for residents of neighboring communities to pass through Baldwin without appreciating all the community has to offer. If the lights on Sunrise Highway or Merrick Road are green, they might be in Rockville Centre or Freeport before the song on the radio is over. While Baldwin itself might not get the acclaim or attention it deserves on a larger level, there’s plenty happening in a community that’s trending upward. When those same drivers are on Grand Avenue, they might turn north and find the Baldwin Public Library, stop inside and find one of the institution’s hundreds of programs for people of all ages taking place, or use its vast resource catalog, or maybe even check out a movie or book just for fun. Going north would lead those drivers to the Long Island Rail Road station at the intersection of Sunrise Highway. The Baldwin Community Garden, which opened in June 2014, is tucked away off Grand, directly behind the always-interesting Baldwin Historical Museum (open Sunday afternoons). The garden, founded and cared for by community volunteers, is a hub for social gatherings, community service and beautiful scenery for all to enjoy. Baldwin High School is a few blocks north and is where thousands of students attend classes each year. For many, it’s also where their academic careers in Baldwin come to an end. Thousands of young Baldwinites go to the high school after attending one of the community’s public elementary schools and middle schools. There are also some private schools. The Baldwin community is comprised of roughly 24,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and many of them are part of volunteer organizations that work tirelessly to make the neighborhood a better place. Baldwin is continuing to grow, evolve and develop, and pretty soon those drivers won’t be able to simply pass through the community without checking out any local event, businesses or available real estate.

Services South Nassau Communities Hospital, the Long Island flagship hospital of the Mount Sinai Health System, is committed to delivering standard-setting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-forprofit teaching hospital that provides stateof-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care, expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. South Nassau has been designated as an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP and is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. South Nassau’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36-bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a

neonatal intensive care unit. South Nassau’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center

South Nassau Communities Hospital 1 Healthy Way Oceanside Emergency: 911 Non-emergency line: (516) 632-3000 www.southnassau.org and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. And that capacity will soon be expanding. South Nassau is working on building a new four-story, 58,000-square-foot wing. The new wing will nearly double the size of the emergency room, add new and larger operating

rooms, add more beds in the critical-care wing, and will also help prepare the hospital in case of another hurricane like Sandy. South Nassau is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at South Nassau’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. South Nassau’s Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for three consecutive survey cycles (2009, 2012, 2015). With leading-edge cancer fighting technologies, including Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery, daVinci roboticassisted surgery, the Long Island Gamma Knife® and world-class physician talent specializing in cancer, South Nassau offers South Shore residents expert cancer care without the need to travel to points north or into the city. For more information about South Nassau Communities Hospital and its services, call (877) 768-8462 or (516) 632-3000, or go to www.southnassau.org. The Senior Life in...

Baldwin People of all ages call Baldwin home, but it’s the seniors living here who give this community a sense of history and perspective. To maintain that committment to the older adults, Baldwin offers many services and programs for them in the community. Whether you want to catch a movie during the summer movie series hosted by the Chamber of Commerce or play a pick up game of softball at Baldwin Park, seniors have something fun to do that will make them feel proud of their community.

Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.
