When traveling on the South Shore, it’s easy for residents of neighboring communities to pass through Baldwin without appreciating all the community has to offer. If the lights on Sunrise Highway or Merrick Road are green, they might be in Rockville Centre or Freeport before the song on the radio is over. While Baldwin itself might not get the acclaim or attention it deserves on a larger level, there’s plenty happening in a community that’s trending upwards. When those same drivers are on Grand Avenue, they might turn north and find the Baldwin Public Library, stop inside and find one of the institution’s hundreds of programs for people of all ages taking place, or use its vast resource catalog, or maybe even check out a movie or book just for fun. Going north would lead those drivers to the Long Island Rail Road station at the intersection of Sunrise Highway. The Baldwin Community Garden, which opened in June 2014, is tucked away off Grand, directly behind the always-interesting Baldwin Historical Museum (open Sunday afternoons). The garden, founded and cared for by community volunteers, is a hub for social gatherings, community service and beautiful scenery for all to enjoy. Baldwin High School is a few blocks north and is where thousands of students attend classes each year. For many, it’s also where their academic careers in Baldwin come to an end. Thousands of young Baldwinites go to the high school after attending one of the community’s public elementary schools and middle schools. There are also some private schools. The Baldwin community is comprised of roughly 24,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and many of them are part of volunteer organizations that work tirelessly to make the neighborhood a better place. Baldwin is continuing to grow, evolve and develop, and pretty soon those drivers won’t be able to simply pass through the community without checking out any local event, businesses or available real estate.

T
he skies light up like the Fourth of July every year in Baldwin — but usually one month after the nation celebrates its independence, when the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Baldwin Day celebration. The day starts with a free picnic and then a concert. For the grand finale, residents gather at Baldwin Park to watch the fireworks. There are often other free activities throughout the day, including face-painting, pony rides, raffles, games and more. The fireworks show started in 2009, and made Baldwin one of the few nonvillages in Nassau County to host such a show. Since then, it’s become a muchanticipated event in the community.

T
he Baldwin Union Free School District includes almost all of the unincorporated area known as Baldwin, as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. The district measures 4.3 square miles and educates roughly 5,500 students in grades kindergarten through 12, an enrollment school officials predict will grow over the next few years. There are five elementary schools, one middle school for grades six, seven and eight, and one high school for grades nine to 12. All central administrative services are headquartered in the district office on Hastings Street just west of Milburn Avenue. A five-member elected school board acts as the community’s representative to the district and is responsible for its annual operating budget. Board members serve three-year terms without pay. Board elections and budget votes are conducted in May. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Board meetings for the 20182019 school year are updated on the Baldwin School District website baldwinschools.org. In 2013, 92 percent of students graduated high school who started ninth grade four years earlier. The figure represents the most recent year for which the New York State Education Department has released information on. About 300 Baldwin residents live in the Oceanside School District, including those who live on Cheshire Drive, Foxhurst Avenue, Hillside Court, Park View Place and Alfred Court.

A water fight breaks out at the race
By Jackson Tarricone
E
ach year, in early September, Baldwin hosts a cardboard boat race at Milburn Creek. The event draws hundreds of locals to the Milburn Boat Ramp either to race or simply to have fun. Participants have to create their own boats out of cardboard, duct tape, rope and string that they themselves race in using oars made of recycled material. The limit for the number of people per boat is six. In recent years, the race has broken out into a water fight, with participants having water balloons and water guns at the ready. This aspect of the tradition looks set to continue. Although many find the event to be extremely fun, it is important to make sure that it is equally safe. The Baldwin Fire Department has a boat on hand to ensure that there are no problems.
Additionally, all participants are required to wear life vests. This year, the event will take place on Sept. 9. Edward Phalen started the event 19 years ago while trying to make the boat ramp enjoyable for the community. He raced in a boat with his kids and grandkids. There is both an adult race and a junior race so that people of all ages may participate. All of the cardboard, no matter how damp or soggy, is recycled by Sanitary District No. 2 workers after the race. The winning team is presented with a “one-of-a-kind. The event is free for all; however, there is a suggested donation of $10 that goes towards Operation Splash, a non-profit organization that cleans up bays and other waterways on the south shore.

The Senior Life in...
Baldwin People of all ages call Baldwin home, but it’s the seniors living here who give this community a sense of history and perspective. To maintain that committment to the past, Baldwin offers many services and programs for the older adults in the community. Whether you want to catch a movie during the summer movie series hosted by the Chamber of Commerce or play a pick up game of softball at Baldwin Park, seniors always have something fun to do that will make them feel proud of their community.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
