The fifth annual Baldwin Relay for Life began the evening of June 8 with a cancer survivor’s dinner and ended at sunrise the following morning. This year’s proceedings featured music, moving words from cancer survivors and purple sashes, like those seen in this photo of caregivers Matthew Lang and Zach Dane. The event raised nearly $55,000 — far exceeding the $40,500 goal set by organizers.

LIVING IN BALDWIN By CHRIS CONNOLLY One of the most racially diverse communities in the United States Baldwin is an unincorporated Hamlet within the Town of Hempstead (America’s most populous town), and measures roughly 2 miles wide and 5 miles long. The population is in the range of 24,000 inhabitants. Diversity is not only a fact of life in Baldwin; it’s a point of pride. Many newcomers cite the hamlet’s climate of racial cooperation among the features that drew them to the area, and established residents also take an active role in promoting harmony and understanding. Baldwin may be at the vanguard of working race relations today — especially as compared to neighboring towns on generally segregated Long Island — but this wasn’t always the case. The model situation that exists currently is at least partially the aftermath of a “white flight” that characterized the decade from 1990 to 2000. During that period the Caucasian population declined from approximately 85 percent to 66 percent while the black and Hispanic populations doubled from 12 percent to 23 percent, and 6 percent to 12 percent respectively. Changes in other racial categories were more modest. The end result of this racial exchange program has been a positive one. The racial diversity index — a census tool which measures blending of races in areas across the country — sets Baldwin’s number at 190, nearly double the national average of 100. The most recent census, taken in 2010, showed this trend increasing rather than reaching a plateau. The total population increased by nearly 6 percent between 1990 to 2010, and Baldwin’s current racial makeup consists of 12,000 people who identify as white, 8,400 African Americans, 5,000 Hispanics and a little more than 2,000 Asians and members of other races. The mixed-race population also grew from 710 people in 2000 to 931 in 2010. Diversity is not the only attraction Baldwin has to offer, of course. An earlyflowering suburb which began establishing itself as early as the 1920s, around a

Last year Steve Bohn, standing in rear vehicle, and the Baldwin American Legion, kicked off the parade in a pair of vintage military transports. third of the homes in Baldwin were built before 1940. This collection of older colonials, Tudors, ranches and split-levels sit in a largely quiet area framed by waterfront parks, local and neighboring shopping and a downtown in the middle stages of development. The hamlet is under an hour from Manhattan and is within 15 minutes of Jones Beach State Park. A high performing school system has long been the backbone of the community. In the last few years, however, a series of budgetary cutbacks have attracted a great deal of public attention. The Baldwin School District closed the underused Shubert and Milburn elementary schools in June of 2012, and in 2013-14 installed a scaled-back spending plan that will require reductions in the arts and music programs as well as in sports at many levels. Reaction to these budgetary constraints has been anything but sedate. A far-ranging fundraising effort immediately sprang up in an attempt to privately endow numerous aspects of the school system, and this kind of activism is typical of the area. Community groups in Baldwin are as diverse as the populace. Among the civic organizations currently
in operation are the Baldwin Civic Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Baldwin Foundation for Education, the Friends of Baldwin Schools, Concerned Parents of Baldwin, Baldwin Kiwanis, the Baldwin Lions, The Baldwin Historical Society, the Baldwin Oaks Civic Association and many, many more. With such a multitude of organizations active within its borders, Baldwin is home to a full slate of annual and one-time events throughout the calendar year. Scarcely a weekend goes by without a farmer’s market, a musical, a juggling or magic show or a public concert attracting hundreds of residents. Annual standout attractions include the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Christmas Tree lighting held at the railroad station, Baldwin Day and football and basketball games featuring the BHS Bruins, perennial title contenders in their respective sports. Rich with history, diversity and civic activism, Baldwin is a hamlet on the rise. The area inspires pride and a willingness to sacrifice in its residents, and its continuing revitalization is a tribute to those who make its future a personal priority on a day-to-day basis.

HISTORY The land that is today called Baldwin was first inhabited by the Merrick tribe of Native Americans. The Merricks were poor hunters and farmers, surviving primarily through trade with other tribes. This dependence on trade allowed early European settlers to persuade the Merricks to trade away their land. The Merricks formally lost all their land when chief Tackapausha of the Massapequa tribe signed a treaty with English settlers Robert Fordham and John Carman in 1643, which gave the English all of the Hempstead Town area. In the 1660s, the town of Baldwin was a piece of land between Parsonage Creek and Milburn Creek called Hicks Neck, named after early resident John Hicks. The community was strengthened in 1686 when John Pine constructed a grist mill, attracting settlers and industry. For most early residents, however, farming and fishing remained the primary occupations. The Revolutionary War caused a schism between Hicks Neck residents due to differing political beliefs, but following the war, the area prospered as an agricultural center. Bethel Chapel was constructed on St. Luke’s Place in 1810 and served as the first church and schoolhouse of Hicks Neck. Another man who brought activity and growth to Hicks Neck was John Lott, who ran both Lott’s Inn and Lott’s Landing seaport from the early to mid1800s. Lott’s property was located in an area of Hicks Neck north of Atlantic Avenue and west of Milburn Creek, which was known by the 1830s as Milburn. Around the same time, Baldwin’s final namesake thus far, the Baldwin family, first moved into town. Thomas Baldwin quickly became a pillar of the community, running a sawmill, a hotel and a general store. Thomas’ son Francis, an architect, followed in his father’s tradition by building many homes in Baldwin and making donations to local schools and churches. His funeral in 1890 is said to have been the largest in Baldwin’s history. The Baldwin family’s role in the community was so great that in 1855, only 25 years after Thomas Baldwin had moved there, the village was named Baldwinsville. By
Chris Connolly/Herald
Even as plans progress to turn the above historic home into a new police precinct, a collection of Baldwin historians are seeking to have the Queen Anne-style building designated as a landmark. The house was built in 1901 for a decorated Civil War veteran named George Sumner Kellogg. the end of the century, the village included the Milburn area, and its name had been shortened to Baldwin. In 1867, the first train of the South Side Railroad (later part of the Long Island Rail Road) passed through Baldwin, and four years later Baldwin constructed its own post office near the train station. 1896 saw the establishment of the Baldwin Fire Department. The village was on the grow, and by 1890 the population had exceeded 1,200. Albert and Arthur Heinrich, two brothers from Baldwin, made history in 1910 by building and flying the first successful American monoplane (a onewinged plane, as opposed to a biplane). The Heinrichs went on to enjoy lucrative careers in airplane construction, which included building warplanes for World War I in a factory right in Baldwin. Two local newspapers, the “Daily Review Star” and the “Baldwin Citizen,” started up in Baldwin in the 1920s. There was plenty to report, thanks to the high volume of liquor smuggling occurring in Baldwin’s ports during Prohibition. The Depression was just as damaging to Baldwin residents as it was to most other Americans. A number of community groups formed to combat the unemployment and poverty of the times, and Baldwin continued to grow. During World War II, a Baldwin
resident, Lieutenant Bernard James Ray, earned a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor when he strapped himself with explosives and charged an enemy blockade. The close of the war saw another large increase in Baldwin’s population when soldiers returned home seeking employment. The village continued to modernize in an attempt to accommodate its growing population. In 1957, the train tracks were raised onto a platform, and throughout the 1950s meadow land was filled in so that more homes could be built. In 1962, the Baldwin Public Library opened its doors. By 1970, Baldwin’s population was over 24,000. In July 2006, Baldwin was voted #25 out of 100 “Top Places to Live” in the United States and #1 on Long Island by Money Magazine. In the summer of 2009, Baldwin hosted its first-ever fireworks show — becoming one of the few non-villages in Nassau to do so. Today, Baldwin is a thriving suburban community. It boasts numerous schools and fine restaurants. It is home to the Nassau County Police Department’s First Precinct, and contains several lovely parks. Baldwin stands as an example of a modern Long Island suburb whose history will only continue to grow as it progresses through the 21st century.

SCHOOLS
Chris Connolly/Herald
The BHS boys' basketball Bruins claimed its seventh consecutive Long Island title last year. Coached by Darius Burton, the team was applauded by the community at a special ceremony last April. The Baldwin Union Free School District includes almost all of the unincorporated area known as Baldwin, as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. The district measures 4.3 square miles and educates approximately 5,500 students in grades K through 12, an enrollment school officials predict will grow over the next few years. There are five elementary schools, one middle school for grades six, seven and eight, and one high school for grades 9 to 12. All central administrative services are headquarted in the district office on Hastings Street just west of
Milburn Avenue. A five-member elected school board acts as the community’s representative to the district and is responsible for an annual operating budget, which for the 2012-2013 school year is $119,977,586. Board members serve three-year terms without pay. Board elections and budget votes are conducted in May. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Board meetings for the 2012-2013 school year are updated on the Baldwin school district website www3.baldwinschools.org. Baldwin High School has once again ranked in Newsweek’s Top Public High
Schools in the U.S. Eighty-eight percent of students earned Regents diplomas and 96 percent are attending two and four-year colleges. Baldwin was also named 25th out of 100 Top Places to Live by Money magazine for everything from its diversity to the quality of its schools. Approximately 300 Baldwin residents live within the Oceanside School District lines, including those who live on Cheshire Drive, Foxhurst Avenue, Hillside Court, Park View Place and Alfred Court. Visit www.baldwinschools.org for district news and events, a listing of PTAs, board meeting locations and more.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
