Fascinating facts about Baldwin Three stories that shaped the community’s past

B

aldwin may be a modern suburban community, but its history stretches from Indigenous settlement and early aviation breakthroughs to extraordinary acts of military heroism.

Three lesser-known facts highlight its deep and varied past.

Native Roots

Long before suburban development, the area that is now Baldwin was inhabited by the Meroke, also known as the Merrick, a part of the Lenape nation that settled throughout much of the South Shore. The Meroke's presence was concentrated between Parsonage Creek near present-day Oceanside and Milburn Creek near Freeport.

The Meroke spoke an Algonquian language and established villages along waterways, including settlements near Milburn Creek. Like many Lenape communities, they relied on fishing, shellfish harvesting and seasonal agriculture, taking advantage of the region’s rich coastal and marsh environments.

European colonization in the 17th century gradually displaced Indigenous populations through land transactions, disease and settlement expansion. However, the waterways and place names of the region continue to reflect this early history, serving as reminders of the area’s original inhabitants and their connection to the land and water systems that still define Baldwin today.

An Aviation First

More than two centuries later, Baldwin played a surprising role in early aviation history. In May 1910, brothers Arthur (23) and Albert (21) Heinrich achieved a milestone in American flight when they designed, built and successfully flew what is considered the first allAmerican monoplane.

The aircraft was developed on a site that is now part of the area surrounding Seaman Avenue and Rockville Drive, where a public Courtesy Library of Congress elementary school stands Albert Sigmund Heinrich in the seat of “The Heinrich Pursuit” monoplane, circa 1914. today. At a time when aviation was still in its infancy, the Heinrich brothers experimented with innovative engineering concepts that would influence later aircraft design.

One of their most notable contributions was the integration of flight controls into a single stick mechanism, allowing the pilot to operate the aircraft using one hand. This early form of simplified control foreshadowed modern joystick systems used in aviation today.

Their successful flights marked a significant step forward in American aviation development during a period when most breakthroughs were occurring in Europe.

Service and Sacrifice

Baldwin is also connected to two Medal of Honor recipients whose acts of bravery occurred during wartime service.

First Lt. Bernard J. Ray of the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division was recognized posthumously for actions during World War II. On Nov. 17, 1944, in Germany’s Hürtgen Forest, he deliberately sacrificed his life to protect members of his unit, Company F, 8th Infantry, during intense combat operations in one of the war’s most grueling battles.

Specialist Fifth Class John J. Kedenburg, a Baldwin High School graduate from the Class of 1964, served with the U.S. Army’s 5th Special Forces Group during the Vietnam War. While attached to a long-range reconnaissance team operating Congressional Medal of Honor Society alongside South Vietnamese forces, his unit was surrounded First Lt. Bernard J. Ray. sacrificed his life for his by a battalion-sized North Vietnamese Army force. unit in World War II. Kedenburg helped conduct a rear-guard action that enabled his team to reach a landing zone for evacuation.

Once there, he continued defending the position and ultimately gave up his chance of evacuation so that a Vietnamese comrade could escape. He, too, was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions.

Local Legacy

Together, these three historical threads — Indigenous settlement, early aviation innovation and military heroism — reflect the depth of Baldwin’s past. While today it is known largely as a quiet suburban community, its history reveals moments of national significance tied to the land, the skies and the sacrifices of its residents.

Middle Eastern and South Asian flavors add another layer of diversity.

Halal-prepared dishes, grilled meats, rice platters and spiced sauces provide hearty, affordable meals.

aldwin’s calendar is filled with events that reflect the energy and cohesion of this South Shore community, where residents gather throughout the year for festivals, concerts and seasonal traditions. Each event offers a snapshot of the town's character and civic pride.

June through August

• As summer approaches, Music

in the Park returns to Silver Lake Park, offering a series of performances in a scenic outdoor setting. Organized in partnership with the Baldwin Civic Association and the Baldwin Historical Society, the concerts provide an opportunity for residents to unwind and connect while enjoying local and regional musicians.

Summer continues with Tim Baker/Herald the Town of Hempstead’s The Incredible AM/FM Time Machine kept the energy alive throughout the night during their performance at the Town of Hempstead Summer Concert Series at Coes Neck Park Neighborhood Block Party last summer.

Concert series, bringing music and family-friendly entertainment to Baldwin’s parks. Concerts scheduled include July 21 at Baldwin Park, July 29 at Coes Neck Park and Aug. 7 at Baldwin Park, featuring open-air performances and food trucks on site. The series extends the summer concert experience across multiple neighborhoods, encouraging broad community participation.

activity and family engagement. The Baldwin Civic Association’s Bike Rodeo and Parade invites residents to take to the streets on two wheels.

Beginning at Baldwin Harbor Town Park, the event includes routes for children and adults, along with participation from Nassau County police officers. Organizers emphasize bicycle safety alongside recreation, making it both an educational and festive occasion.

Later in the month, the Baldwin Alice Moreno/Herald Baldwin Park fills with cyclists, familes and local officials for the Community Bike Civic Association Food Truck Festival adds a culinary highlight to the season. Library marks century of service, adapts to modern needs

Grand Avenue institution blends historic roots with digital resources, programs for all ages

he Baldwin Public Library serves as a central educational and cultural resource for residents. Located on Grand Avenue, the library provides access to books, technology and community programming, functioning as both a traditional library and a modern learning hub. It supports patrons of all ages with services that promote literacy, lifelong learning and community engagement.

History and Development The library’s origins date to 1919, when members of the Woman’s Advance Club established a free library as a memorial to local soldiers who served in World War I. The early collection was housed in a rented storefront and consisted largely of donated materials managed by volunteers. As community demand increased, a permanent 32

building was acquired in 1921 at the corner of Grand Avenue and Foxhurst Road.

In 1932, Baldwin residents voted to fund the library through the local school district, formally establishing it as a public institution.

Continued population growth led to the construction of a new building at its current Grand Avenue location in the early 1960s.

A major renovation completed in 2005 expanded and modernized the facility, allowing it to better serve the needs of a growing and evolving community.

Collections and Services A wide range of materials, including books, magazines, DVDs and other media are housed here. In addition to traditional lending services, the library provides access to public computers, Wi-Fi and research databases. Study spaces and meeting rooms are available for individual and group use.

Library cardholders can also take advantage of interlibrary loan services, enabling access to materials beyond the local collection. These offerings help ensure that patrons have access to a broad range of information and resources.

Digital Resources Digital access is a significant component of the library’s services. Patrons can borrow eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines and comics through online platforms.

Streaming services for movies and music are also available, along with access to newspapers and specialized research databases.

Many of these resources can be accessed remotely, allowing users to engage with library materials from home or on mobile devices.

aldwin offers residents and visitors a network of public parks that reflect its suburban character, waterfront geography and emphasis on accessible outdoor recreation.

From active athletic complexes to quiet neighborhood ponds and canal-side views, the community’s outdoor destinations provide a range of experiences for all ages. Among the most utilized are Baldwin Park, Milburn Creek Park, Silver Lake Park, Coes Neck Park and Lofts Pond Park, each contributing a distinct setting and purpose.

Baldwin Park Baldwin Park serves as the area’s primary recreational hub and one of its most active public spaces. It features multiple athletic 36

facilities, including baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, handball and paddleball areas, soccer fields and multi-use paths.

Other amenities include a skate park, playgrounds and a spray pool, making it a popular destination for families and youth activity. Walking paths connect different sections of the grounds, and the park regularly hosts youth sports leagues, fitness programs and community events throughout the warmer months.

With multiple entrances and surrounding parking areas, access is straightforward.The central location allows residents to reach park easily by car, bicycle or on foot from nearby neighborhoods.

Milburn Creek Park Here you'll find a quieter, more natural contrast to Baldwin’s larger athletic facilities. Centered around a creek and pond system, park features shaded walking paths, small bridges and scenic viewpoints that appeal to walkers, joggers and birdwatchers.

Benches and open grassy areas provide space for picnicking and informal gatherings. Wildlife, including ducks and other waterfowl, is commonly seen throughout the year, contributing to the park’s calm atmosphere.

Access is typically through residential streets, with limited nearby parking. The park is designed primarily for passive recreation, making it a favored spot for low-key exercise, reflection and nature viewing.

Silver Lake Park This park is known for its pondcentered design and looped walking trail that circles the water. The path offers both paved and natural surfaces, making it accessible for casual walkers, joggers and families.

Benches line portions of the trail, while open areas allow for picnics and small gatherings. The pond serves as a focal point for local wildlife, especially birds, and provides a quiet backdrop for everyday recreation.

The park is generally open from early morning to evening hours, with seasonal adjustments. Limited parking is available nearby, and many residents access it by foot from surrounding neighborhoods.

Coes Neck Park Located closer to Baldwin’s southern waterfront, Coes Neck offers a more open, canal-adjacent setting. Its shoreline views and breezy environment make it a destination for fishing, kayaking access and waterfront relaxation.

Unlike inland parks, this space emphasizes water access and scenic views, particularly at sunrise and sunset. Its open layout also accommodates picnicking and informal gatherings. .You'll also find tennis and basketball courts alongside a playground.

Parking and access points are available nearby, though the park’s appeal lies largely in its natural, unstructured environment.
