Alleviating the schooltime jitters

here's nothing like a major milestone in a child's life to test a parent's confidence. Big changes like a new school or classroom can be trying for kids and adults alike, but tackling the transition a little at a time can make it easier on everyone.

Most parents agree that being confident is important, but only about 1 in 3 parents feels confident on a typical day, according to KinderCare's Parent Confidence Report. However, experts say your own feelings can impact youngsters.

Whether your child is making a big change like stepping up from pre-K into kindergarten or entering a new grade in the same building, there's likely to be some trepidation. Especially navigating the school year as the pandemic rages on.

As each child is different, which means reactions to change can vary.

Some kids show up ready and raring to go, eager to explore and meet new friends, while others can be a little clingy, tearful or even refuse to look at the teacher or take a step through the door.

If you think your child might have trouble making the transition, consider these strategies to help ease both of you into a more comfortable place and build confidence for a successful school year.

Set up a classroom visits before school starts if possible Sometimes fear comes from the unknown.

For the youngest student, by visiting ahead of time and seeing firsthand, your child can become familiar with the layout of the classroom, meet the teachers and know what to expect, which can help alleviate some of the anxiety and jitters.

Talk with your child's teacher about the transition Your child's teacher should be your partner, so be open and honest from the start. Talk about

how your child handles change, what causes stress or what behaviors the teacher might expect. Don't be afraid to call and ask for updates on your child to see how things are going.

Avoid sneaking away from your child at drop-off Talk about what will happen ahead of time and create a consistent and predictable drop-off ritual, such as two high-fives, a hug and a wave from the window, to ensure your child feels secure and safe. Continue this routine every day to help your child get used to the classroom environment and make sure the process is a quick, happy one. Lingering too long can make it harder on your child once you do leave.

Be enthusiastic Just like laughter, excitement is contagious.

Rather than focus on nerves or uncertainty, share your own memories from school including how you felt at the beginning of a new school year and the excitement of learning and meeting new friends, which can help your child get hyped up, too.

Set up a work station at home Creating a designated space at home for your little learner to do homework, read, write, draw and complete art projects can help set him or her up to develop good study habits.

Stock this station with colored paper, crayons and markers, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, books, stickers and other necessary tools, and leave room for stowing a backpack. Encourage your child to spend time working on educational endeavors in the space each night.

f you’re the parent of a teenager, you’re probably more than familiar with one-word answers. Whether in response to asking them how their day was (“meh”) or to what they want to do with the rest of their life (“dunno”), teens are experts at dishing out short replies.

A teenager’s reluctance to engage in conversation can stem from a variety of reasons, from a desire for space to budding independence to developing communication skills. In most cases, it’s not only normal, but it’s also a necessary stage of adolescence.

Add in the frustrations of a global pandemic, which has resulted in virtual schooling, social distancing and canceled events, getting past one-word responses might be a little more difficult right now.

However, these Covid-19 hurdles may be more than just frustrating — they could be impacting their education as well as their mental well-being.

A survey of over 1,500 teens ages 13 to 19 revealed that during the pandemic: √ 7 1 percent of teens feel anxious or depressed about school work √ 60 percent of teens say feelings of stress have led them to not do their best on a school test √ 67 percent of teens pretend to feel fine so they don’t worry others.

As your teen heads back to school for what is sure to be another complex school year, it’s crucial to maintain regular — and productive — communication with them. Consider these questions to ask your teenager about school during the pandemic that will actually get them talking.

What has been most challenging about your school experience during Covid-19?

It’s no secret that Covid-19 has thrown a number of obstacles at every age group, but teenagers have faced a particular set of challenges.

What was meant to be one of the best periods of their life, chock-full of new classes, sports seasons and social events, has turned into a much more isolated experience.

They’re likely facing a variety of disappointments due to the pandemic — and it’s important to validate those feelings.

Ask your teen what’s been tough about school during Covid-19. Are they feeling disconnected socially? Do they get annoyed with wearing a mask all day? Are they experiencing screen fatigue?

Explain that it’s perfectly normal to be frustrated right now. Then, take the time to brainstorm solutions together.

Remind them that while extra precautions are critical to keeping them and others safe and a fun mask can be a great addition to their outfit. Whatever their challenges are, don’t dismiss them. They may be looking for a good window to talk through their problems with someone, including you.

When talking to your teen, solicit their opinion. Ask them what they would change and why that would help. If their proposals aren’t feasible, such as foregoing a mask, have a conversation about why. If they suggest alterations that might work, explore possibilities like utilizing online resources, hiring a tutor, or reaching out to their teacher.

While you (and school leaders) ultimately set the rules, involving your teen when possible will demonstrate your willingness to listen and encourage them to express their needs more openly.

What has being a student during a pandemic taught you?

By now, it’s pretty clear that this time period is one for the history books. Similar to the 1918 influenza pandemic — the most severe pandemic in recent history — students will likely be reading about Covid-19 many years from now.

Remind your teen that while not necessarily always a positive one, they are living through an important historical time period. And as with most historical events, there’s something to be learned.

Easing back in Re-adjustment is a process

Ask your teen what they have discovered while navigating school through the pandemic. Maybe they’ve realized how much can be accomplished virtually — or how exhausting using technology all day can feel. Maybe they have gotten much closer with a small circle of friends versus a broad group of acquaintances. Or maybe they’re simply recognizing how to take pleasure in small moments during a difficult time.

Whether it’s about themselves, their social circles, or the world at large, encourage them to maintain focus on what they’re learning during this unique period in history.

How can I help you get the most out of your school experience right now?

Whether your teen is 13 or 18, they’re being asked to display a high level of maturity right now. They are responsible for protecting themselves and others — all while keeping up with school in a less-than-normal situation. All of this can be exhausting.

Discuss how you can help them succeed, and be ready to step up when they need you.

Teens may boast independence left and right, but they’re still developing the ability to problem solve, make informed decisions, and fully think things through. Now more than ever, they may need extra support to navigate school effectively. This may be in the form of helping them organize their workload, providing them with a more private workspace, or reaching out to a teacher for advice. As long as they’re reasonable requests, do your best to accommodate their needs when possible.

Most importantly: How are you feeling — and why?

Learning remains just as essential as it always has been, but the stress and uncertainty created by the pandemic have been especially tough on teens. Right now, be sure to check in on their mental health and provide them the support they need.

Ask your teen how he/she is doing, and be prepared to listen. Express empathy about what they’re going through, and remind them that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. By remaining calm and proactive, you can set the tone for a productive conversation. If you’re concerned about your teen’s mental well-being, talk to your pediatrician, who can provide support.

After the challenges of last year, kids may finally get to be kids again.

This upcoming school year means being reunited with friends, having some sort of regular schedule again and finally having the chance to show off those new clothes, backpacks and clever school supplies. Good for them and good for parents, right? While there are concerns about keeping kids safe from Delta and other emerging Covid-19 variants, at least parents won’t have to worry about teaching common core math or listening to lessons in between conference calls. What a dream!

Unfortunately, there's some apprehensione about going back for many families. What can you do if you notice that your child is having a rough time with this change? Pediatric psychologist Vanessa Jensen, PsyD, ABPP, offers some sage advice to help make the process easier.

Why good change can also be stressful “In general, going back to school is just a big change. It’s a whole new setting especially for kids who are going from elementary school to middle school or middle to high school.,” Dr. Jensen says. "All of the sudden, they’re expected to know what they’re doing. It’s a huge shift from being their little space at home to now being in this world of back to school.”

How to recognize when your child is having a tough time She adds that if you’re not sure if your child is having a hard time with the transition back to school, think about how they normally act when they’re stressed and look for those behaviors. For example, if your child gets headaches or stomach aches when they’re anxious, you’ll know that school is stressing them out should they start having them more frequently.

“We have a tendency to go toward certain behaviors when we’re stressed. My suggestion is for parents to think about what their child does when they get stressed in a new situation,” she says. “Think about the behaviors that they usually revert to whether it’s hiding in the background of a small group or acting out and trying to be the funny kid. Once you recognize what they tend to do under stress, that’s probably what you’re going to see as they enter into a new situation.”

Help teens make the adjustment We remember our teenage years. Some of us were wild and loud. Some of us were shy and quiet. But regardless of our personalities, most of us probably kept our crushes, craziness and challenging times under wraps. Dr. Jensen advises us to keep that in mind when it comes to teens. While it’s natural to want to know every single thing that’s going on in your teen’s life, prying or being overbearing will only make things worse.

“If your child has been able to handle things in general, give them some space. But if you’re worried, you can always say things like, ‘You seem a little stressed. You know, I’m around,’ or ‘Have you talked to your friends?’ And if they have talked to their friends, you can always follow up with ‘Well if you want to talk to me, I’m here.’”

Reassure them gently and gradually. “If you overwhelm your child with questions, (and I compare this to throwing buckets of water on them), they’re going to think, ‘Whoa, I’m not going there.’ So, give them space. They know you’re there. " Help smaller children adjust to changes It’s hard for little kids to express big emotions — and it’s hard for parents to deal with the tantrums, especially if hitting, kicking, wailing and flailing are involved. Dr. Jensen says with younger children, it’s good to establish some core basics regarding behavior.

Some things are OK and some things are not OK in terms of behavior.

Let your child know that it’s OK to be upset. It’s OK to feel scared. But it’s not OK to hit or kick.

verseeing your child's academic life is essential, but if you find yourself constantly hovering over him or her at homework time, recalculating every math problem and editing every essay, you might be what educational and psychological experts call a “helicopter parent.”

Being overfocused on your child's performance and behavior can stem from a few things: anxiety, compensation, fear of consequences or peer pressure, as Kate Bayless writes in Parents magazine. Surely, behind that is a commitment to your child succeeding and being taken care of, though it can have consequences. But how do you be an involved parent without smothering your kids?

Dr. Bill Moredock, a longtime licensed psychologist who is also an elementary school principal, says helicopter parenting isn't good, but neither is total uninvolvement. Parents should be involved with their children's academic life but need to act within reason, he says.

In other words, constant hovering isn't necessary, and some involvement is important.

“Parents should monitor their children's progress in school starting from day one,” he says.

“From preschool through graduate school parents should have a stake in how their children are progressing at every level. Of course, the degree of involvement should vary depending on factors such as age, grade, special circumstances, transitions, and the specific needs of the child.”

“It is an empirically proven fact that children with parental support have a higher probability for success in school than children who lack support,” he says.“Parents who are completely uninvolved set their children up for academic failure.

Parents need to set the expectation and standard (for school work) — for example, 'I expect you to work hard and do your best,' — and then support their children in meeting their academic goals.”

Understand your child’s personality and learning style But when it comes to monitoring schoolwork and overseeing homework time, parents also need to consider their child's personality and learning style. “Each child is different,” he says.“Ask any parent who has had more than one child. Each child has his or her own set of inherited traits. Some children need a lot of support on school-related endeavors. Others seem to need very little.” Take the time to observe what kind of support would benefit them before just

jumping in.

Dr. George S. Glass, who co-authored the book “The Overparenting Epidemic” with David Tabatsky, says helicopter parents are often invasive, overly attentive and competitive and have trouble separating themselves from their offspring. “Our children are not extensions of ourselves,” he says. “Each of them is his or her own person, no matter what stage of development the individual is at.”

“Children need to be given the space to try things out and experience failure as well as success,” Glass says. “That should begin at an early age and certainly by the time they go to school.”

Allow your child to explore different study techniques, hobbies, etc., rather than imposing your own or interfering so they don't fail, as failure is one of life's greatest teachers.

Give them a break Moredock adds that no matter what the grade level, having some down time is also important.“Kids do need breaks — time to exercise and have some fun,” he says. And even when children are under extreme pressure to get homework finished and out of the way, parents should not do the work for them. “Parents who do their children's homework are fostering dependency and perhaps even encouraging cheating,” he says.

In short, Moredock says helicopter parents foster dependency and lack of resiliency.

"Overinvolved parenting might achieve shortterm success — such as an 'A' on a volcano project — but sets a student up for failure when the parent cannot follow the student to college," he says.

“Also, helicopter parenting increases the risk for anxiety and anger in the child. Parents should step back when they sense that their involvement is producing these negative side effects — a disgruntled unhappy child. That is the time for a really open discussion. If there is an impasse or if there are significant arguments that last more than several weeks, parents should contact their pediatrician of psychologists who work with children and adolescents."

Parents want their children to thrive, be happy and succeed. If you feel you've been hovering a bit too much, look for opportunities to take a step back from solving problems. Then your children will be one step closer to building self-confidence and important life skills.

t’s no secret that our education system has been faced with disruption and unprecedented challenges in providing instruction to students during this global pandemic.Teachers strive to create supportive and challenging classroom environments for their students. Such settings can bring out the best in students and help them overcome obstacles, including an inability to focus.

The struggles students can have with focusing on their studies was apparent during the pandemic. A 2020 survey of more than 400 college students found that 64 percent were concerned about their ability to maintain their focus and discipline in remote instructional environments. Though educators, students and parents are hopeful that remote learning will soon be a thing of the past, no one is certain about what lies ahead in regard to the 202122 school year. Ideally, students will remain in school time full-time five days per week. Even so, the stress brought on by the pandemic, added to “normal” academic anxiety and pressure, means that even the best student may lose focus from time to time.

Emphasize one activity at a time Studies have shown that multitasking adversely affects performance and makes it hard to concentrate. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently found that performing two or three activities simultaneously puts significantly more demand on the brain than simply doing those tasks one after another. All students, and especially those who are struggling with focus, should be encouraged to take on one task at a time.

Take breaks The Cleveland Clinic notes that various studies have found that periodic breaks improve mood, boost performance and increase a person’s ability to concentrate and pay attention. Many students are well acquainted with lengthy cramming sessions on the eve of a big exam, which can feel like a rite of passage for high schoolers and college students. Reinforce the importance of taking breaks during such sessions and help your student under-

stand that periodic rest can help improve performance.

Take a piecemeal approach to big tasks Breaking big tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces can help kids effectively tackle more challenging tasks, according to the The Child Mind Institute. The piecemeal approach can make big tasks seem less daunting, and the success kids have at each smaller task can provide some needed momentum as they draw closer to solving the problem.

usy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic have adversely affected some students.

Students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years; certainly virtual learning may have been a contributing factor to post-pandemic academic performance. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing.

Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed.

Declining test scores Some students are simply poor test takers, but a gradual or sudden decline in test scores may indicate students are having trouble mastering material. Teachers can pinpoint if certain concepts are overly challenging to students and notify parents if there are any problem areas.

Poor time management or focus Students who are struggling may have their attention drift or they put off doing tasks because they don’t grasp the assignments.

Lack of homework help at home Parents may have prior commitments during the times of day when their children are doing homework. Even when parents are home, they may discover that the concepts covered in school are not being taught in the ways parents learned them and they may have difficulty assisting their children. Tutors can step in and help students when parents cannot.

Learning disorder Certain students learn differently from others due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disorder. A child who is struggling with reading, phonics, spelling, and writing may have dyslexia.

Tutors who specialize in learning disorders can assess and address learning conflicts and tailor instructions in ways that can help students overcome those challenges.

Students “shut down” or say they “hate” school Disinterest in school or expressions of hating going to school may be indicative of academic struggles in the classroom, says the Princeton Review. Some students get so frustrated they simply give up. Tutors can solve learning puzzles and help get students back on track and reignite their interest in school.
