Create a traditional kitchen full of personality

Since so much time is spent in this room, it's important to have a kitchen that fits your personality. There are many styles to choose; but traditional remains one of the most popular because of its timeless, classic look. If you're updating your kitchen, here are some tips to create a space that reflects your personal style. Color matters. The right paint colors are integral to achieving the traditional look. Select paint colors that are warm and inviting like cream, taupe and gold. Light colors are popular in the kitchen because they provide a feeling of cleanliness and make the space feel larger. Infuse your room with a few stylish touches by incorporating accents in darker or richer shades, especially in the furniture, wood trim or flooring. Quality fixtures. When designing your new kitchen, don't overlook the faucets. They get used many times during the day — needing to withstand heavy usage and tie into the overall design of the kitchen. Growing in popularity are motion-activated faucets, such as Moen's easy-to-use MotionSense technology. The Brantford pulldown faucet adds timeless appeal as the spout enhances the curvature of the faucet body and handle, giving any kitchen a beautiful look with the ultimate convenience of hands-free technology. For an even more elaborate style, consider an enduring, Victorian design with functional details, such as its high-arc spout. Signature styling elements include a decorative top finial and a refined shepherd's spout. The detailed design of these faucets will provide extra luxury and serve as the perfect focal point at the sink. Storage with flair. Replacing cabinets is usually the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel, so take your time and

choose carefully. First, think about the color and the type of wood. White painted cabinets with intricate details and raised-panel doors are a popular choice for traditionally styled kitchens. Adding eye-catching details also goes a long way. Be sure to finish the top of the cabinets with decorative molding or swap wood-fronts with glass panels. And, since it's all about the details, choose decorative knobs and pulls, as well as a towel bar or towel ring that match both the style and finish of your faucet to add fashion and function. Luxury countertops. Granite and butcher block are the countertops of choice. According to the National Association of Home Builders, granite is the most desirable, must-have kitchen feature. This is likely because it's scratch- and chip-resistant, not to mention this material is a classic design choice that withstands the test of time. Butcher block not only adds a warm look to your kitchen, it's also functional as it provides an ideal area for chopping food. Plus, these countertops are easy to clean — just use soap and water. For added appeal, use two types of materials, one on the main countertop area and another on the kitchen island. Decorative lighting. Since the kitchen is the place you chop and dice, not to mention socialize with loved ones, you need both ambient and task lighting. For ambient lighting, consider a chandelier. Hang it over the kitchen island or the dining space to add a sophisticated touch. Task lighting should be brighter: use pendants and recessed lights over workplaces like countertops, the sink and stove. Incorporate these design elements and you'll soon have the elegant, traditional kitchen you've always desired.

10 steps to a more organized kitchen By Sharon Naylor

Go-anywhere upgrades that are great for kitchens and baths

TT

he best kitchens not only look beautiful but also function beautifully, making it easier for you to find the saucepan you need, as well as its lid.

You don't want to heft a big pile of heavy platters to try to slide out the lasagna pan from the bottom, and you certainly don't want to waste money when food spoils in your refrigerator because you couldn't see what was in that baggie or foilcovered dish until weeks after it had gone bad. Solve all of these problems, and others, by giving your kitchen an organization makeover. Here are 10 steps to achieving an organized, functional kitchen that's also beautiful: 1. Make it a multi-day project. Tackle one section of your kitchen at a time (such as your pantry on one day, your cabinets above the counter on another day, etc.) rather than pulling out everything in all of your drawers, cabinets and the refrigerator, thinking you can get the job done in one shot. That's far too overwhelming, and with every surface covered as you try to do it all at once, your kitchen will be rendered useless for perhaps several days. Plus, doing one section at a time gives you that wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you get each smaller area completed, creating momentum and keeping you fresh and energetic to do the jobs well. 2. Stock up on terrific organization products. Julie Morgenstern, author of "Organizing From the Inside Out," says to "use space-savers to stretch storage capacity within each section." Morgenstern suggests utilizing the following: • Wire shelves that "take advantage of wasted space between widely spaced shelves," and can also be door-mounted to hold pantry food items. Narrow wire shelves can also be found with magnetic backings to hang on the sides of your refrigerator to hold small items. • Hooks mounted under shelves on which to hang coffee mugs (thus opening up space inside cabinets). • Lazy Susans placed on shelves and in cabinets to hold spices, canned goods and cups. • Drawer dividers to keep utensils in their place. • Clear storage containers with lids — lots of them — for storing bulk-buy foods or leftovers in the refrigerator so that you can easily see that delicious leftover shrimp and enjoy it the next day, instead of noticing a smell a week later and having to throw out $25 worth of shrimp. • A label-maker. A great one allows you to customize the font style and size, and labels peel off easily, making your storage containers easily identifiable. 3. Map out your kitchen's zones to help

It's time for a kitchen organization makeover. you reposition items for each section's function. Morgenstern suggests the following Zones: daily dishes, food preparation, cooking, cleanup and recycling. While working on, say, your pantry, you may find an item for "cleanup." Just move it to that done or undone area as you go. And a new zone established for baking allows all of your baking tasks to be much more streamlined and enjoyable. 4. Before you begin your first kitchen section, set up large, trash bag-lined bins or sturdy boxes labeled; "toss," in which you'll deposit old sauces, spices and unusable items; "donate," in which you'll deposit canned goods, dishes and other items that can be used or sold at a mission or shelter; or "store," in which you'll deposit items that you use rarely and are better stored in your basement. 5. Remove everything from the pantry or cabinet you're tackling, and first give your shelves a good cleaning and fresh, clean liner paper in a color or pattern you love. Shelf or drawer liners set a foundation for your kitchen's makeover. 6. Change your drawers plan. If you previously stored all of your utensils in one drawer, switch to one drawer for everyday eating utensils and most-often-used gadgets. Then the next drawer can hold your larger cooking and baking utensils. 7. Go vertical. Try stacking your cookbooks flat, instead of standing on end, to use more vertical space and create a new and attractive display of those books you use often.

From floor to ceiling:

Store books you haven't used in the past three years elsewhere or donate those that are unwanted. 8. Remove clutter. Morgenstern says, "Deport tchotchkes to create room for food prep," and "banish surface clutter so your space feels clean and welcoming." If you'd love for your collectibles to remain on display, switch their position to a narrow wall or magnetic fridge rack, clearing your counter. 9. Remove as much from your refrigerator as possible. That means magnet-held coupons, relatives' kids' photos, outdated schedules and magnets from restaurants or the gutter cleaners. It's OK to have a littleitem drawer if you'd like to have these items and pens on hand. But clearing your fridge creates a more polished look. 10. Set up a tech center, including your laptop and its stand, so that you can easily access recipes you've bookmarked or scanned into your system and your family's activities calendar. A built-in desktop and chair make this zone comfy and modernize your kitchen's functionality. Q Publishers CLIFFORD RICHNER STUART RICHNER Executive Editor JOHN C. Some upgrades look laughable in the wrong room: plush carpeting in the bathroom or custom drapes in a kitchen. A handful of go-anywhere upgrades work especially well in kitchens and baths — and can raise those rooms from merely functional to inspiringly fashionable. Of course, virtually any upgrade you make to a kitchen or bathroom will pay off in the long run. Those rooms continue to attract buyers to homes, and deliver high returns at the time of resale. A major kitchen remodel of $53,000-plus yields nearly 69 percent return on investment, and a major bathroom remodel of more than $61,000 tops a 70 percent return, according to Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report. The right upgrades, however, enhance both your home value and your enjoyment of two of the most important rooms in any house. If you're looking for an upgrade that will work equally well in your kitchen or bath, consider these improvements: Add a skylight. Few upgrades fit equally well in a bathroom or kitchen, but a skylight affords unique benefits to either room. In baths, fresh air skylights admit natural light and provide passive ventilation while providing more privacy than windows. In kitchens, they can reduce the need for artificial lighting and help carry moist air and cooking fumes out of the room. What's more, skylights can help enhance a home's overall energy efficiency. Upgrade fixtures. From faucets to showerheads, the fixtures in kitchens and baths are like jewelry that completes a fashionable ensemble. While you can easily spend thousands on high-end products, you don't have to in order to achieve a high end look. For a modest investment, you can upgrade faucets, showerheads and other fixtures to improve usability and add a luxurious look to a kitchen or bath. For example, in the kitchen touch-free faucets are both beautiful and practical, minimizing the spread of germs by never requiring you to touch a clean faucet with dirty hands. In the bathroom, a luxurious showerhead can enhance your shower experience with a rainfall effect, music or even lights. Improve flooring. When you think about flooring for kitchens and baths, chances are you think of some common materials such as vinyl or tile. While carpeting or wood may be equally impractical in rooms where moisture and spills are routine, more durable materials work well in both rooms. When choosing flooring for baths and kitchens, remember the value of slip-resistant, moisture-proof, durable options. Q

esigners, and those that appreciate good design, are familiar with the popular term Open Concept.

Tune in to any design show or browse a decorating magazine and you will be met with views and the merits of wide, open living spaces, usually with a kitchen at the core. “At P.S. Micaza Interiors, no one comes to us and says, ‘Please make my kitchen feel small and closed off to the rest of the house,’ jokes Lead Designer Patricia Salcedo. The veteran designer of 26 years has seen trends come and go, but the trend toward achieving functionality through open concept design is one that is here to stay. How you fill that open space is where good design meets convenience and utility. Open Concept design should optimize seating potential. When integrating a kitchen to the living areas of a home, the aim is to accommodate as many people as possible. Salcedo, who enjoys entertaining a large extended family and circle of friends, recently, revamped her own kitchen space with her “people” in mind. Since the kitchen existed on the upstairs level of her home,

Salcedo mostly entertained on the more open lower level. Rethinking the kitchen for Salcedo was an evolution that began with a long wish list and then, a long list of ideas. Ample space surrounding the cooking area became a design objective, as did an abundance of seating options. An open space where easy entry and viewing of the entertainment area was accessible became important too. The result incorporates a large, multi-level island, different seating areas, a fireplace and living room furnishings — all of which have views and access to the kitchen activity and entertainment center.“As the homeowner, I allowed myself to open my mind to the possibilities within an open space. As the designer, I was challenged to execute a long wish list stylishly,” she adds. The style came from the materials used. With the kitchen at the hub, Salcedo’s open concept living employs two different natural stones as well as solid surface material on the counter tops. The vertical seating areas

are highlighted by a myriad of materials: glass, wood and leatherette upholstery. The large open space, divided by smaller conversation areas, is unified by one wood grain porcelain floor to withstand the heavy traffic and occasional kitchen disaster. “Incorporating multiple materials, textures and patterns in an unconventional way keeps an open space interesting and pleasing to the eye,” Salcedo says. “By adhering to a harmonious color palette throughout, there is always a place for the eye to rest”. While considering the removal of walls to achieve an open concept design, remember to address the remaining surface — the fifth wall. Whether simply highlighting the ceiling with moulding, a paint color other than white or a grand medallion to accent a

chandelier, this often forgotten surface can be a canvas. Design firms, such as P.S. Micaza Interiors, Inc., embrace the ceiling as an opportunity to enhance design especially in an open concept where walls are sometimes invisible. P.S. Micaza Interiors, Inc. is located in Bellmore. W W

hen designing a kitchen, homeowners typically give substantial consideration to many elements of their dream design, including cabinet and countertop materials and which brand of appliances they most prefer.

But few may consider the lighting for the room as thoroughly. Lighting is an important consideration in any room, but most especially in the kitchen, where people tend to gravitate and spend a good portion of their time. The right lighting can have a dramatic effect on the functionality of the kitchen, including how the space feels when you enter it. The right blend of lights can create a vibrant mood in the kitchen, while light can be adjusted according to what needs to get done in the space. Establishing a lighting plan in a kitchen requires a combination of different lights. The main focus should be on three distinct lighting types: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

Task Lighting Task light is beneficial anywhere a person will need to perform tasks that require close concentration, such as chopping vegetables. Task lighting shines direct light onto a surface, illuminating it thoroughly, and it can be turned off when it is not needed.

Task lighting is generally placed above counters and islands where one will be slicing vegetables and preparing food. There may be lighting over the sink to illuminate dirty dishes. If a kitchen has a desk area, lighting above the desk will make that area more functional. Many task lighting designs include lights under cabinetry to shine down onto counters and eliminate shadowed recesses. Under-cabinet lighting is a relatively inexpensive add-on for existing kitchens.

Ambient Lighting Ambient lighting is another name for allover lighting that fills a room. During the day, ambient light may stream in from windows and skylights. However, at night, ambient lighting is created by different light fixtures in a room. In the kitchen, overhead fixtures are a popular choice. A blend of hanging pendant lamps, chandeliers and recessed lighting can create the amount of light needed. Pay special attention to the bulbs and fixtures they choose, as not all produce the same amount of light. Those concerned

about energy efficiency also must give mind to whether the bulbs will use a lot of energy or last a long time. Compact fluorescent bulbs as well as LED lighting are long-lasting and do not use as much energy as incandescent bulbs. Indirect ambient lighting softens shadows in a room, creating a warm, inviting glow. It is an important layer of light that is often overlooked in the kitchen.

S-7

No longer just a place to shower, apply makeup and shave, the bathroom is the new oasis of the home, a place to relax and unwind. That is why spending on bathroom remodels is now almost on par with spending on kitchen remodels. Hamish Kofoed, design manager at Mico Designs Ltd., says, "Bathroom design trends for 2014 revolve around the bathroom as a sanctuary, with lush elegant lighting, rich stone and tile work, and luxuriantly deep freestanding tubs. It's all about luxury, color and a return to quality." "Freestanding tubs are the new must-have in the bathroom," says Kofoed. "There's great design flexibility in this area; anything goes, like modern fixtures with vintage clawfoot tubs." And freestanding tubs serve as beautiful focal points that some designers say act as 'art' in the room. If a freestanding tub simply won't work in your space, Kofoed suggests "a tiled or marble-frame (tub) semi-recessed into the floor to help free up visual space in the bathroom." Here are the top trends in bathtub design for 2014: Soaking tubs. Not everyone wants or uses powerful massage jets positioned all around a tub's interior. New shower designs with multiple jets offer that indulgence. A simple soaking experience can be far more relaxing. One notable exception to this is the new class of gentle BubbleMassage air baths, in which thousands of warm-air-filled bubbles mas-

athroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value.

Resurface When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less labor-intensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew. Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners. Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they're just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls. It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. If something needs to be replaced because it

is damaged or mildew-covered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run.

Scale back on materials One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost. When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

Update hardware A new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank. Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive. When shopping for a new showerhead, choose a model that also conserves water. This way you will be making cosmetic and energy-saving renovations at the same time.

DIY Handling labor yourself instead of hiring workers can reduce the cost of bathroom remodels considerably. It is possible to buy fully assembled bathroom vanities and install them yourself. Even installing a new toilet is relatively easy with the help of a friend. There are a number of ways to make bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. Even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home's resale value in the process. Q

The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms. While "easy" is a relative term, there are ways that those who are willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

any homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners' budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that's concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that's likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be

hen you shop at discount warehouse stores, you likely come home with enormous products — 24-count paper towel packs, 48-pack toilet paper packs, laundry detergent jugs larger than your smallest child or grandchild and cases of canned goods — and all of these oversized items need to be stored somewhere in your home. It's not just these mega-packs and stacked cases that need a home. At your grocery or gourmet food store, you might indulge in a wide variety of products sold in bulk. Buying in bulk means there's much less wasteful packaging, you save money because you're not paying for the fancy label. Some top bulk products include rice, grains, flours, pasta, soup mixes, beans, cereals, trail mixes, nut butters, sweeteners, dried fruits, nuts and seeds, snacks and treats, herbs, spices, salts and peppercorns, teas and coffee. These items bought from the bulk foods aisles will likely not come home with you in packages as large as those paper towel roll collections, but they too need to be stored safely and efficiently in your home. Don't forget those bulk bins of fresh vegetables and fruits that you might buy as shares from a nearby family farm or organic food co-op. These perishable items need a

perishable items, and organize them by accessibility needs. For instance, onions, peppers, apples and other fruits and vegetables should be located close to your cooking areas, such as in baskets on a shelf or countertop. Toilet paper rolls can be stacked in your linen closet by bathrooms, and paper towel rolls can go in the basement or in your walk-in pantry. Having stations makes your bulk buys more accessible, which means you'll be more likely to get your money's worth with those perishable items that could otherwise be forgotten when they're too far from your cooking area. Think temperature control. If your garage isn't well-insulated, perishables stored on shelves there can freeze during cold winter months. Keep all perishable items in warmer rooms of your home. Think safety. If you have small children or pets in your home, make sure that openshelving units don't pose the risk of them getting into your bulk buys or of cans toppling from shelves, injuring them. Choose storage shelving units with doors on the bottom levels, childproofed for extra security. Purchase new, sturdy shelving units that can hold heavy items. Older shelving units can be rickety, posing risks of them falling over or shelves giving out. Organizational shelf systems at home-supply stores now come with great features such as baskets that slide out like drawers and customizable dividers. Purchase new plastic storage containers with airtight sealable lids in different sizes to hold an array of your bulk buys. And label them with not just the item name, but also the date you bought them. Devote a space to your bulk items. If you have a walk-in pantry, consider making one side's shelving units your dedicated space for your bulk buys, rather than shoving items in among other products haphazardly.

Removed unwanted items. Designate a large basket or wooden box for your donate items; those canned goods that are still within their expiration periods but aren't your favorite tastes. These can be brought to your local food pantry. Any bulk pet items you bought that your pet didn't like can go to an animal shelter. Create a method for when your stockpile gets low. Hang a clipboard or magnetic notepad on your shelving unit so that you can write down which supplies are running low and needing to be replenished. Arrange your bulk items with lots of airflow around them wherever you store them, especially perishables, so that they don't spoil and so that they look more orderly if visible to others. Consider buying an additional refrigerator unit for your basement or garage in which to store your overflow produce. Jamming too many vegetables into your kitchen refrigerator drawers can lead to quick spoilage of your food and lots of wasted money. Q

he kitchen is the heart of the home — the place where memories are made while cooking, eating and sharing stories around the table.

10 steps to a more organized kitchen By Sharon Naylor

he best kitchens not only look beautiful but also function beautifully, making it easier for you to find the saucepan you need, as well as its lid.

athroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a

fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom.

It is possible to buy

fully assembled bathroom vanities and install them yourself. Even installing a new toilet is relatively easy with the help of a friend. There are a number of ways to make bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. Even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home's resale value in the process. Q

athrooms have become the new stars of home design.

A simple soaking experience can be far more relaxing. any homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel.

Create a lighting scheme that works for the kitchen hen designing a kitchen, homeowners typically give substantial consideration to many elements of their dream design, including cabinet and countertop materials and which brand of appliances they most prefer.

Create a traditional kitchen full of personality and style

athroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value.

Opening up possibilities with open concept design By Randi Satnick

D D

esigners, and those that appreciate good design, are familiar with the popular term Open Concept.

·¶É½ÉÊ· ÉÇºÃ¹È Modern tubs are longer, cleaner and freestanding By Sharon Naylor

athrooms have become the new stars of home design.

One notable exception to this is the new class of gentle BubbleMassage air baths, in which thousands of warm-air-filled bubbles massage and support the entire body. Longer tubs. Tall people who have attempted to bathe in standard-sized tubs often find their soak to be less than pleasing because they have to bend their knees in order to recline into the water. Longer tubs allow for full stretch-out space for taller people — or room for two. Smaller tubs. For a second (or third) bathroom, such as one designated for kids, smaller drop-in tubs add value to a home. This smaller tub might also be the perfect spot to bathe your dog, so as not to damage your master bathroom spotlight tub. Black tubs. Bathtubs in sleek black stole the show at the annual Kitchen/Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas. While many modern tub designs are in neutral tones, black tubs are in hot demand, especially when paired with new collections of black fixtures such as matte black chrome-plated faucets and handles. Whites and neutral colors. As light colors, they give a rich, warm look to a room and, in a monochromatic color scheme, make a space look larger, reflect light and add to a

Today's new bathroom is a relaxing oasis. bathroom's appearance of being clean and hygienic. Pantone's annual home design color trend reports feature inspiring shades of the season's stylish blush tones, ranges of whites and modern grays, as well as new brights to consider. Fluid curves. Modern faucets and handles are more rounded for a softer look than standard tub hardware of past eras. Faucets and handles, matching soap dishes, and nearby robe hooks and towel racks are artistic, spalike and modern. Glass tile. Matt Muenster, a licensed contractor and host of the DIY Network's "Bath Crashers" and "BATHtastic!," says, "Recycledglass tile gives this bathroom an underwater appearance" and reflects light for a brighter, airier appearance. Radiant heat. The flooring around the

tub and shower area can be designed with in-floor heating that warms the bathroom floor so that you never step out of a warm tub onto freezing tile. Radiant heat is costeffective and, when professionally installed, completely safe. A fireplace in the bathroom across from the tub could be another source of warmth and relaxation during a soak. Water-saving taps. In an effort to conserve water and spend less on utilities, homeowners are choosing watersaving faucets in tubs, as well as in showers.
