Hello, neighbors! We are proud to present our annual Oceanside/Island Park Guide, a special supplement to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald. Those of us who live here know that Oceanside and Island Park are wonderful places. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make them so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide to Oceanside and Island Park ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Oceanside/Island Park Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news, including election results.

living in Oceanside Oceanside has become a magnet for the surrounding area with its attractive shops and restaurants. The land where the first Oceanside school once stood is now known as the Schoolhouse Green. It is the site of many community activities. Every summer the Oceanside Kiwanis, in conjunction with the Library, present poetry and prose readings from the Green’s gazebo. Barbeque demonstrations and cookouts also take place on the Green. Come winter you will find it decorated for the season. The community comes to the annual Menorah lighting. The Green will shine with a decorated tree while a student choir sings holiday songs around the gazebo. The Oceanside schools have become one of the major forces in the community. The school district not only runs the schools, but the Department of Community Affairs [DOCA] as well. The DOCA conducts community programs, activities for seniors and after-school programs at the district’s facilities. The school district has become the center of community involvement in Oceanside. There are many active groups in Oceanside. The Kiwanis and Kiwanettes hold holiday gatherings, pancake breakfasts and dinner dances; the money raised is used in service to the community. There is a vibrant Chamber of Commerce, welcoming new businesses with ribbon cuttings and celebrations, and honoring community leaders at an annual dinner dance. It works on behalf of its members to keep the Oceanside business community active and vibrant. The Civic Association brings the government and the community together through lively meetings and discussions about community needs. Other groups include the Knights

Christina Daly/Herald

of Columbus, the Sons of Italy, the Rotary Club and so many more. The Oceanside Chorale meets once a week at the Merle Ave. School. There is a wide variety of religious denominations in Oceanside and the surrounding communities. For the younger crowd you’ll find Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League and Girls Fastpitch. The Oceanside Fire Department has three hose companies, one engine company and one truck company. Safety not only from fire, but storms and natural disasters is a major concern. The Department presents demonstrations, discussions, information and inspections to help keep all Oceanside citizens safe. The award winning South Nassau Communities Hospital hosts a wide range of informational meetings and health related groups, which are open to the public. No matter what your interest you will find Oceanside a welcoming community.

Island Park Village Deputy Mayor and Trustee Steve D’Esposito, says goodbye after serving the Village of Island Park for 25 years.

It’s been four years since Hurricane Sandy; Island Park is a rebuilt community. So much is new and better. New stores, new homes, even the old village hall has been torn down and a new one will be built on the site. The firehouse now boasts new equipment, one ladder truck, two engine trucks, and two ambulances, plus a rebuilt and renovated firehouse. Most important, residents have a new appreciation of their neighbors; they know that no matter what happens, when hit with the worst, Island Park brings out its best. The community likes to have fun, and celebrate. Morning on Memorial Day the entire Village is festooned with flags thanks to one of our local merchants. The Memorial Day Parade winds through the town greeted by flag waving children. The Village sponsors a recreational program at Masone Beach, plus concerts and movies. The gazebo at the beach can be rented for special occasions. The grills are cooking all summer long, while families, friends and local civic organizations hold barbeques. Many of those civic events, on the beach or at the gazebo, are open to the public. There are even weddings on the

beach. The Village boasts a splash park, and several playgrounds all open to the public, plus bocce ball and handball courts. Tennis, baseball and another splash park are located in the Town of Hempstead part of Island Park at Shell Creek Park. Come fall, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Trick or Treat where little ghosts and goblins can “scare” local merchants. October is the Chamber’s annual dinner dance. The community turns out again to light the Village Menorah, decorate a Christmas Tree sponsored by the Island Park Business and Residential Chamber of Commerce, and the Caroline Previdi Tree, located next to her playground. It would not be the same without the annual visit from Santa to the Firehouse. The Civic Association holds the annual “Love Your Troops” dance in February; proceeds support those in service to our country. In spring the IPBRCC holds its annual dinner dance. The Kiwanis Club has a pancake breakfast. Summer brings the annual Jimi Gubelli 5k walk/run. Year round there are a plethora of activities for young and old.

ith over 100 years of service, the Oceanside Fire Department stands ready to help anytime anywhere. The brave men and women spring into action putting out fires, rescuing swimmers and boaters and removing wildlife from storm drains. All without pay other than the gratitude of the community. Columbia Engine Company No. 1 was organized in 1902, a hand or horse drawn double tank engine was purchased in 1903. In 1913 the company became the first on Long Island to have a motorized piece of equipment with the purchase of a Matthewson Hose Wagon.

FIRE Departments Island Park

The Island Park Fire Department has been serving the community since 1924. Many homes at the time were bungalows, made entirely of wood, posing serious fire risks, so with its first $800 the company purchased a two wheeled 40-gallon chemical tank, one dozen hand chemical extinguishers, three hand sirens, and badges. There was one fire hydrant at Long Beach Road and Warwick Road, but it had very low water pressure. As the community felt the need for a better fire company residents donated land and supplies. The current firehouse was built in 1951. This past year Island Park welcomed the second new truck replacing one lost in Hurricane Sandy. OCEANSIDE/ISLAND PARK GUIDE

Welcome to

sland Park’s two public elementary schools, Francis X. Hegarty and Lincoln Orens, serve grades K-8. High school students have the choice of attending either West Hempstead High School or Long Beach High School. Superintendent Rosmarie Bovino proudly announced that this year all of the repairs related to Hurricane Sandy are finished. Island Park is one of only four districts that were awarded a Smart Schools Technology Grant, from a State Education Bond Act. The grant is being used to build a new z-Space lab, a 3D virtual exploration lab for science (and soon history and music) complete with 3D printers in Lincoln Orens School. The school recreation department and PTA together host a Fall Family Fun Day and costume parade around Halloween. The district and the Faculty Association host Community Day in June. The Lincoln Orens students go to battle every year as the Blue Team takes on the Gold Team at Sports Night.

T

he guiding principle of the Oceanside School District is “Oceanside Schools… anchored together by purpose, passion and people.” The District is located in the Town of Hempstead. It includes Oceanside, and parts of Baldwin and Rockville Centre. There are six elementary schools (Grades 1-6) one Middle School (Grades 7-8), one High School (Grades 9-12), one alternative high school and an administration building. School No. 6 houses PreK, Kindergarten and Castleton Academy. The district works with several advisory groups; The Oceanside High School Band Parents Association, The Department of Community Activities Advisory Committee, the Buildings and Grounds Advisory Committee and the Parent Teachers Association. All District teachers have been deemed “Highly Qualified” by the State Education Department, and the curriculum along with all support materials and evaluation strategies have been designed to meet the district’s specific needs. Supporting wellness, sports, plays, concerts and more, the district and the community work together to provide a wide variety of activities, making Oceanside a special place to live.

Out and About

Oceanside is on a peninsula, Island Park is on several islands, it should be no surprise that so many local activities involve the ocean and the bays. There are any number of conveyances for water lovers, from stand up paddleboards and kayaks to personal watercraft, sail and powerboats available to rent or buy. No matter where you go there is a beach or park close by. The Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve of salt marshes, tidal creeks and uplands. The rich variety of plant and animal life makes it an ideal learning center for all ages. It has been visited by thousands of elementary school, high school and college students who have taken advantage of the free-guided tour provided. There is also a self-guided booklet for the mile of boardwalks and trails. The Interpretive Center is two buildings with galleries of preserved nature, marine life displays and salt-water aquaria featuring local species. The Marine Nature Study Area is open to the public year round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. It is located on Slice Drive in Oceanside. Shell Creek Park was established 17 years ago, on Vanderbilt Avenue in Barnum Island. Open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter, the park hosts a complete range of activities. For the athlete, a pair of basketball and paddleball courts await. There are large playing fields for general use. The park lends out equipment such as footballs, jump ropes and knock-hockey tables. A fully equipped playground is there for the kids, as well as a spray pool for frolicking. There is fishing on the bay, off

the bulkhead, where snapper, flounder, fluke and blackhead can be caught, depending on the season. Four well-kept professional tennis courts are available. Reservations must be made because these courts are in demand. Both the baseball fields and the tennis courts are illuminated at night for the dedicated athlete. There is no fee to use the park. Only proof of residency is required. Oceanside Park is a paradise for amateur athletes. Oceanside’s Little League, Sally League and the Babe Ruth League all play on the fields, plus organized softball. There is also a rink for roller hockey. There is handball, game tables, horseshoes, picnic tables, play areas, soccer and tennis. There is no fee to use the park facilities and they are illuminated at night. They also offer arts and crafts, a walking/jogging program and puppet and mime shows. The park is open from

9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Oceanside pool has diving, wading and swimming areas; teams and lessons are available. Pool season passes are available for individuals and families, the cost varies according to residency, and special rates are offered to the disabled as well as senior citizens. The pool, illuminated at night, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Oceanside Schoolhouse green is located on the converted old School No. 1 property. Since October 12, 2000, the property has been transformed from an abandoned school site into what has increasingly becoming a vital, living center of the Oceanside community. Many varieties of trees have been planted. A gazebo is the sight of a summer outdoor reading program sponsored by the Oceanside Kiwanis Club. Island Park’s Masone Continued on next page

Beach on Waterford Road is a quiet little bay beach perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Snacks and beverages are available at the beach to patrons for refreshment. New to the Masone Beach are the Caroline Previdi Playground and the Antoinette/Armand D’Amato Splash Park, where children can enjoy playing in cool, clear water during the hot summer months. Children also have the opportunity to participate in creative classes, activities and recreation. Masone Beach hosts several events during the summer. The most popular is the Summer Concert Series. Residents and visitors enjoy musical entertainment. The series begins in July and concludes with a dazzling Grucci Fireworks show in early September. Island Park also hosts summer movies on Masone Beach. All the events are free and open to the public, just bring a lawn chair and a friend.

Take the opportunity to visit Landgraf Park at the north end of Waterford Road, home of the new Kaboom Playground.

mong the villages’ websites, Facebook pages and A community and social media — and the Herald’s recently revamped news site that delivers breaking and in-depth, hyper-local news — Oceanside and Island Park each have a strong online and social media presence to keep community members up to date. Of course, there is no shortage of opinions, ideas and a dash of discourse in the community, whether it’s politics and quality-of-life issues, or post-Sandy recovery discussions, or updates about events around town. Here are some noteworthy, local online links that residents might find useful and interesting:

Town of hempsTead Founded in 1644, Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a supervisor –– currently Republican Anthony Santino –– and a six-member Council. The six members are each elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the Council members have four-year terms. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings, and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the dayto-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for creation and implementation of the town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
