Established as a community in 1926, the 1-square mile village was incorporated in 1962. Beach clubs abound along the shoreline and about 525 single-family houses are home to approximately 1,900 residents. The village, governed by a mayor and four trustees, is within the boundaries of the Lawrence School District. The Atlantic Beach Bridge, operated by the Nassau County Bridge Authority, connects the barrier island with the mainland. The Atlantic Beach Rescue Squad is a trained group of volunteers that aid with emergencies on the water and land. Fire protection is provided mainly by the Long Beach Fire Department, along with mutual aid from nearby fire departments. The adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates are unincorporated sections of the Town of Hempstead. Television shows “Royal Pains” and The Sopranos” taped in the village, as did the film “Goodfellas.” The famous Corleone estate from “The Godfather” and the fictional beach club in the movie “The Flamingo Kid”

were both set in Atlantic Beach.

cedArhurst

Best known for its shopping along Central and Cedarhurst avenues, the 1-square mile village, according to local lore, took its name from the grove or “hurst” of cedar trees near the post office. The late Red Holzman, who coached the Knicks to their only two NBA championships, lived on Oceanpoint Avenue, named Red Holzman Way in his honor. Mickey Hart, one of the two longtime drummers for the Grateful Dead, grew up in Cedarhurst and graduated from Lawrence High School. Governed by a mayor and four trustees, the village is also within the Lawrence School District. The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department provides fire protection for the estimated 6,650 residents, 1,629 single-family homes and the many commercial enterprises, which are supported by an active Business Improvement District.

Shoe magnate Steve Madden and rock guitarist Leslie West grew up in Lawrence, and it is where real-life characters Henry and Karen Hill, played by Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco in the movie “Goodfellas,” lived with her parents when they were newlyweds. Home to Peninsula Public Library, the village is served by the Lawrence School District and fire protection is provided by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. About 6,480 people live in the village and there are an estimated 1,600 single-family homes. Aong Central Avenue there are several place to shop and eat, including Seasons kosher supermarket, Amazing Savings discount store and Cho-Sen

Island, a kosher Chinese and Japanese restaurant.

Hewlett

The Town of Hempstead hamlet of Hewlett is home to Nassau County’s Grant Park and the 4th Precinct building, both at Sheridan Avenue and Broadway, and about 6,300 people and 2,170 single-family homes. Broadway features several businesses and restaurants, along with the Veterans Memorial Plaza, where several events, including the community menorah and Christmas tree lightings are held. Serviced by the HewlettWoodmere School District and the Hewlett Fire Department, the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, a group of merchants from both communities, helps to organize the Memorial Day parade and other events in conjunction with the school district and local government officials.

Jim Steinman, the music producer famous for producing the classic “Bat out of Hell” album by Meatloaf, Oscar-winning film director Errol Morris, artist Ross Bleckner and sports writer and broadcast Tony Kornheiser, all graduated from Hewlett High School. The area includes three small villages: Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck. Each governed by a mayor and village board. The Seawane Club is in Hewlett Harbor. Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls is in Hewlett Bay Park. Only threequarters of a square mile, Hewlett Neck is the smallest of the trio.

onship and the 1923 U.S. Open. Serviced by the Lawrence School District and its own fire department, there about 9,500 residents and 2,235 singlefamily homes. Nassau County’s first County Executive, J. Russell Sprague, was born in Inwood as well as Ray Barbuti, a two-time gold medalist at the 1928 Olympics. Its history includes multiple waves of settlers from fishermen to farmers in the early 1800s. Later in the 19th century the community was known as Westville. When the residents lobbied for a post office in 1888, the name had to be changed so as not to be confused with upstate Westville. Several names were considered, but Inwood was chosen. Its origin remains a mystery. In the 1890s, Italian and Albanian immigrants were part of the second surge. Through the years, the community has to

come to include a significant African-American and Hispanic population.

Woodmere

Covering 2.6-square miles, Woodmere, a Town of Hempstead hamlet, is the largest Five Towns community in area, and the most populous with an estimated 17,215 residents and about 4,395 singe-family homes. Its portion of Broadway also includes several businesses and eateries. Fire protection is provided by the Woodmere Fire Department. Woodmere is home to Lawrence Woodmere Academy, a private nonsectarian school that has grades K-12th, and Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva for Boys. The former Number Six School will be home to the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach later this year. Fashion designer Donna Karan (Hewlett High 1966), comedy writer Alan Zweibel,

and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office, were Woodmere residents. The smaller southern portion of Woodmere is known as Woodsburgh. It was incorporated as a village in 1912. Its population is about 780.

North Woodmere

Close to Queens and with portions of the community within the Valley Stream 13, 24 and 30 school districts, the hamlet in South Valley Stream closely identifies with the Five Towns. An estimated 20,880 people live in the community. Home to the county’s North Woodmere Park on Hungry Harbor Road, the community includes a large Jewish population and several synagogues such as Temple Hillel, Young Israel of North Woodmere, Congregation Ohr Torah and Beis Hakness of North Woodmere.

A Message from the Cedarhurst BID Chairman Dear shoppers, Cedarhurst continues to be the premier shopping village of the South Shore for quality merchandise for women, men, children and the home. The Cedarhurst Business Improvement District (BID), formed in 1993, works in close collaboration with retail and restaurant establishments, property owners and businesses, to provide assistance as well as expertise on how to improve the shopping, dining and business experience. We take immense pride in the cleanliness, safety, and convenience of shopping in Cedarhurst. Thanks largely to the efforts of Mayor Benjamin Weinstock, and the Village board of trustees, improvements have been made throughout the business district including improved street lighting, and street, sidewalk and tree maintenance. The BID is, in part, responsible for the flower plantings and fall holiday lights and we work closely with our village government to ensure a pleasant and welcoming shopping environment. Accomplishments include free weekend parking year-round in all ten municipal parking fields, and at designated times during the fall holiday season. The BID has an informative and user-friendly website, www.shopcedarhurst.com, and we welcome any suggestions for improving it and providing information you find useful.

Diana Colapietro/Herald

The annual BID-sponsored Summer Sidewalk Sale is a four-day shopping extravaganza.

The BID is best known for its planning and execution of two enormously successful events: The Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale and Black Friday/Saturday Night Midnight Madness. Those two events bring in many thousands of people to Cedarhurst and are very popular, and extremely well attended. The Cedarhurst BID welcomes your thoughts and suggestions on making shopping in the village better for all of us. Please email us at info@shopcedarhurst. com with your ideas and input on how to make the Cedarhurst business district the best that it can be.

The HWBA plans to increase internet marketing through the use of our current web site and a secondary site under construction, ShopHewlettWoodmere.com. We enjoy the support of Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito , County Legislator Howard Kopel, County Executive Ed Mangano, Town Supervisor Anthony Santino and New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky. It is these public officials and our residents who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The HWBA has become an integral part of the
