Hello, residents! We are proud to present our annual Merrick Guide, a special supplement to the Merrick Herald Life. Those of us who live here know that Merrick is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald Life does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide Merrick ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Merrick Herald Life 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www. LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results.

living in Merrick Most days in the summer, someone is using the athletic fields at Brookside School in North Merrick: sports teams playing games, fathers and sons having catches, groups of friends holding batting practice, a single soccer player juggling a ball. Across the field often comes wafting the musical jingle of an ice-cream truck passing through the residential blocks behind the school. It is a common suburban scene set against the backdrop of two of Merrick’s centerpieces: the community’s much sought-after homes and its top-notch school districts, like the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which has its administration offices at Brookside. Stretching from North Jerusalem Road in North Merrick south to the peninsulas that jut into Merrick Bay, the community of 34,369 spreads across multiple distinct residential and business areas. Barry Fox, a local business owner, president of the Merrick Park Homeowners Association and a more than 40-year resident, described his neighbors as a “middle-class, educated group of people.” He also cited Merrick’s “excellent” schools, proximity to

the South Shore’s beaches, ease of access to New York City via the Long Island Rail Road, and the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, which in 2000 opened on land converted from a former landfill, as Merrick’s outstanding features. In recent years, Merrick’s downtown commerce zone on Merrick Avenue underwent major revitalization. Many businesses refurbished their facades. Sidewalks were redone. The train station received a complete makeover, as did the Merrick Library. Since 2006, the Robbie Levine Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Merokeans Jill and Craig Levine that donates automated external defibrillators to youth ball fields and funds CPR/AED classes, has each spring held its annual Robbie’s Run, a 5K fundraiser that draws thousands of runners and supporters to LevyLakeside School and the streets of south Merrick. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District spent an average of $25,983 per student in 2015-16, compared to the statewide average of $23,370, Continued on next page

according to the New York State Education Department. Ninety-four to 98 percent of the district’s graduates attend college, compared with the state average of 78 percent. Susan Helsinger, an associate broker at Douglas Elliman Real Estate and longtime resident, pointed to the strength of the library, civic organizations and her friendships with neighbors as the community’s strong points for her. “It’s a wonderful place to raise our children, speaking from both a realtor’s point of view and as a resident. The parks are great and safe for children,” Helsinger said. “I have wonderful friends here. We call ourselves ‘the moms.’ We’ve known each other since our kids were in preschool together, and we still go out for dinner all the time.” Randy Shotland, a former president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce who has lived in Merrick his entire life, said that the community has shot up in population since he graduated from high school in 1969, but it still has a “small-town” feel. Merrick has “lawyers, doctors, realtors, gyms, food stores, clothing stores,” Shotland said with pride. The chamber “puts on two festivals each year. We do a Halloween walk and Christmas and menorah lightings. We do a networking meeting for our local business owners.” Merrick was founded in 1643 when British colonist John Smith moved here from Connecticut and bought land from the Merri-auke-ut Indians. The tribe, which was known as Merric, Meroke and Merikoke, provided the name for the community. Merrick is remembered in those days as a picturesque wilderness of woods, plains, lakes, ponds and a river that ran along its western border. It is described as a rustic paradise. Also arriving in 1643 were John Carman and the

MERRICK GUIDE

Rev. Robert Fordham, both of whom bought 64,000 acres for $100 and other “trifling considerations.” England brought Merrick the George Hewlett family in 1649. Many of the Hewletts settled in the community, buying property from Jonathan Smith. A community begins John Smith Jr. built the first home in the area in 1687 near what is now Merrick Road and Central Boulevard. Six generations of Smiths lived there. Merrick remained a rural community for roughly two centuries. Merrick Path, which ran north to Hempstead and east to Babylon, was Merrick’s first road. In time, its name changed to Babylon Turnpike. Carrying mail and passengers between Jamaica and Babylon was a stage coach, which came through daily. Samuel Smith built a store on Babylon Turnpike near Meadowbrook Road, which served as a coach stop, general store and post office. The community flagpole was erected there dur-

ing the Civil War. When the flag was raised, the villagers came from all over to hear battlefront news. Today, the flag is in the collection of the Historical Society of the Merricks. In 1866, the South Shore Railroad was built through Merrick to Babylon. Charles Fox, a Merrick resident whose home once stood at Merrick Avenue and Merrick Road, was the railroad’s president. At the turn of the century, summer residents began to appear upon completion of the railroad. The Long Island Camp Meeting Association was the biggest summer group. Two young men, Edwin Cray Camman and Richard Peabody Kent, opened the Merrick Library in 1891. An association was formed and incorporated on April 27, 1897, to raise funds to support the library; a building was then erected. At the time, the area’s population was about 500. World War I accelerated growth in Merrick. Then, the Continued on next page

1920s hit. Houses went up on all sides, and prices were high. Merrick’s population quickly approached 5,000. The Merrick Woods development was considered a huge success. The Gables neighborhood,

which served as home to many famous actors and actresses, was even more popular. Gables homes accented a “Spanish castle” motif. The railroad was electrified in 1925. At the same time, motor vehicles grew more common, particularly after the

ellmore-Merrick’s five school districts i t — ffour ell ementary districts and one high school district — are consistently ranked among the top school systems in New York state, even the country, with an array of programs to nurture “the whole child.” The four elementary districts — Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick — feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, one of a few such central districts across the state. The Central High School District annually boasts a 98 to 99 percent graduation rate, with many students receiving acceptances to top-rated colleges across the country. The elementary districts comprise three to five schools each. The Central High School District is made up of Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools. Each of the high schools offers advanced programs in the arts, business, engineering and science research. Magnet cosmetology and drama programs, which attract students from all three high schools, are housed at Calhoun. Additionally, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, an alternative high school housed at the Brookside School in North Merrick, offers a special program for students who are having trouble fitting into their home high schools.

I love that our kids are exposed not only to Hebrew but to Yiddish as well— and I know my grandparents would have loved it too. Our boys aren't memorizing alphabets or history books. Rather, they're learning what it means to be Jewish through food, music, culture, and volunteering. This is more than an education: it's the Jewish community we've been looking for." - Raina and Todd Leibowitz, East Meadow Workmen's Circle School parents.

LIBRARIES Bellmore-Merrick Summer Reading Program Even though school is out for summer, BellmoreMerrick library summer reading programs ensure that reading doesn’t take a break too. The Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore and North Bellmore libraries partnered for the fourth consecutive year in the summer of 2016 to provide opportunities for residents of Merrick and Bellmore of all ages to enjoy the written word and socialize over their favorite books. Themes vary from year to year, with 2016’s theme being Exercise Your Mind. Programs included Little Joggers for children 12 to 35 months old, Road Runners for children ages 3 to 6, and Super Sprinters for children entering grades two to six, and are staffed by high school volunteers and library employees. Adults can also enjoy a program of their own in the BellmoreMerrick Summer Reading Club. Signing up is as simple as registering at your local reference desk.

Getting Involved Musically Merrick Merrick offers several different performance groups for musicians and music lovers. Longtime Merokeans Rita and Richard Gilley head the Merrick Symphony Chamber Orchestra, which performs a free concert annually at the Freeport Memorial Library. The Merrick Symphony has previously collaborated with concertmaster Byung-Kook Kwak, and performs a variety of classical music pieces, including works by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Dvorák and others. Merrick’s singers can look to the Merrick Chorale, a stalwart performance group in the community for more than 20 years. The Merrick Chorale rehearses for two hours on Tuesday nights from September to June at the Brookside School on Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, and performs a variety of musical styles, including classical music in the fall, popular music in the spring and holiday music throughout the year. Those interested in taking part are encouraged to email Barbara Picard at rpicard2000@yahoo.com.

The Historical Society of the Merricks annually holds a reading of the Declaration of Independence in downtown Merrick on the Fourth of July. Above, Margaret Biegelman, the Merrick Chamber of Commerce president, signed a mock Declaration during the 2016 reading.

Among Merrick’s many clubs and organizations is the Historical Society of the Merricks, a passionate and dedicated society that has been driven to preserve the history of the hamlet and surrounding areas since 1975. According to the Historical Society, it is only through understanding and appreciating the past that we can value and improve the community today. To keep Merrick’s past alive, the Historical Society spearheads interactive programs, expert speaker appearances, bus tours to historical sites and community projects. The Historical Society also maintains a collection of donated historical items in the original Merrick Library building, at Merrick and Kirkwood avenues. Most notably, the Historical Society is responsible for one of Merrick’s most cherished holiday traditions, the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July. During this free event, residents of all ages gather at the Merrick gazebo in downtown Merrick to each read a line of the Declaration aloud and reflect on the nation’s founding principles. Individuals and families are eligible to join the society for a small membership fee. Continued on page 24

Getting Involved Merrick American Legion Post 1282 Of Merrick’s many clubs, organizations and societies, the Merrick American Legion Post 1282 is among the most active. Headquartered on Merrick Road just west of Babylon Turnpike, Merrick Post 1282 is a nonprofit organization that addresses veterans’ issues in the community and beyond. Merrick Post 1282 hosts general board meetings on the fourth Monday of every month and is responsible for many of Merrick’s most notable monuments and memorials, including Merrick Veterans Memorial Park, on Merrick Avenue just north of Camp Avenue. Legionnaires also run collection drives for military families overseas, award scholarships, host social events for veterans and their friends and families, and organize the annual Memorial Day Parade.

Veterans Memorial Park is one of the most popular Merrick monuments and memorials, on Meru rrick Avenue just north of Camp Avenue. Dedicated oon Nov. 11, 2000, by Merrick American Legion Post 11282, the park serves to honor all those who have sserved the United States in times of war and peace. A circular garden sits on the northern tip of the park, leading to an array of monuments. Next to p tthe garden is the main monument, a beautiful, tall black stone dedicated to those who have served in b tthe Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Merchant Marine and Navy. The poem “But You M D Didn’t,” by Stan Gebhardt, is inscribed on the back. South of the main monument is a 9/11 Memorrial Garden and plaque, followed by the Merrick V Veterans’ Monument, which lists the names of the M Merokeans who died serving in World War II or tthe Vietnam, Korea and Iraq wars. On the southern end of the park is the North M Merrick Fire Department Monument, dedicated to tthose who have served the community in Engine C Company 1, Engine Company 2, Rescue Company 11, the Fire Police Academy, and the Hook and Ladd der Company. Veterans Memorial Park hosts several memorial ceremonies throughout the year, most notably the final ceremony of the annual Merrick Memorial Day parade. Continued on page 25

Out and About Jones Beach State Park Nearby Jones Beach State Park is not only famous on Long Island, but also throughout the nation. The park, on Jones Beach Island, directly south of Merrick and Bellmore, features 6.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, renowned for their fine white sand. The Ocean Parkway, with its breathtaking views of the Atlantic, is easily accessible from the Meadowbrook or Wantagh parkways. Families and friends can swim and play in the waves under the vigilant eyes of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps, while small children can take advantage of Zach’s Bay for calmer, shallower waters. Surfers, stand-up paddle boarders and wind-surfers can also enjoy the waves at several locations along the beach. For those seeking a quiet day of fishing, piers and bait-and-tackle shops are readily available. On the world-famous boardwalk, visitors can grab a bite at one of the many restaurants and concession stands, or have some fun by playing miniature golf, shuffleboard, basketball, tennis or handball. There’s also bicycling on the Wantagh Parkway bike trail, which passes through Jones Beach by the Nikon at Jones Beach amphitheater, on the way to the Ocean Parkway bike trail. Cycling is also permitted on the Jones Beach boardwalk, except in summer. The boardwalk’s bandshell offers free music, magic, dancing and movies for walkers every week. The Nikon amphitheater regularly attracts the biggest names in the music industry for its summer concert series, and has also hosted notable music festivals, including the Vans

Warped Tour and the Laid Back Festival. Music lovers can head to the amphitheater to enjoy their favorite bands in front of a breathtaking backdrop of the sun setting over one of the country’s most cherished summer getaways. The park’s Theodore Roos-

evelt Nature Center is another fun and educational way for children to spend the day at Jones Beach. The center offers group and guided tours for kids to feel live marine animals and plants, dig up whalebones, explore a butterfly garden and even see a shipwreck.

Levy Preserve, one of Merrick’s gems Among Merrick’s crown jewels is the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, off Merrick Road in south Merrick. The park, a permanently preserved nature sanctuary, is thick with maple, oak and ailanthus trees. Phragmites line the canals surrounding the preserve, which looks out on Merrick Bay to the east and wetlands to the west. TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD Founded in 1644, Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Council. The six members are each elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings, and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the dayto-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for creation and implementation of the town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
