Living in Lynbrook Early history
A historical marker in front of Lynbrook Village Hall proclaims: “Lynbrook — established 1785.” The date comes from a 19th Century Methodist prayer book that indicates that by 1785, a small community of 40 houses had been established near Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue, close to where the Rockville, (then Sand Hole) cemetery is today. In 1790 a 20-by 30-foot Methodist meetinghouse was built on land donated by Isaac Denton. Benjamin Abbott, the first preacher, rode a 300-mile circuit on horseback to reach his widelyspread Long Island parishioners. The intersection became known as Parson’s Corners. The land to the west of Parson’s Corners, near what is today the center of Lynbrook, was called Bloomfield. Much of the land was owned by one family, the Pearsalls. The Pearsalls had been among the first European settlers to come to Long Island. They arrived in 1639, only 30 years after Henry Hudson explored the Hudson River. Around 1830, Wright Pearsall purchased some land at Hempstead Avenue and Merrick Road, at the intersection we today call The Five Corners. An historical marker denotes the spot where Pearsall opened a general country store. Wright Pearsall’s store became so widely known that the corners and the surrounding community soon became known as Pearsall’s Corners. The name Pearsall’s Corners stuck for about 40 years until just after the Civil War. At that time a post office and railroad station were built and the simpler name Pearsalls came into use on postmarks and train schedules. Hundreds of people vacationing from overcrowded Brooklyn and New York City liked what they saw in Pearsalls and decided to stay. In 1894, the name was changed to Lynbrook, in honor of Brooklyn. The village was incorporated in 1911.

Near and far
How East Rockaway, Lynbrook and Rockville Centre got their names
In what is now Lynbrook, the area was named Pearsall’s Corners in 1855 after wealthy landowner, shopkeeper and undertaker Wright Pearsall. By Frank Torre very town, village and hamlet on our island has an origin, but not many can trace it as far back as the residents of Lynbrook and East Rockaway can. On December 13, 1643, the deed to the land we now call home was signed. Robert Fordham and John Carman, sent by Reverend Richard Denton of Hartford to explore the island, bartered the deal with seven local Indian chiefs of tribes known to English speakers as the Massapequa, the Merrick and the Rockaway. By 1644, their new settlement was given the name Hempstead, named after Denton’s hometown in England. It consisted of the southern portions of the Great Hempstead Plains, and extended southward to what is now Long Beach. The name Near Rockaway wouldn’t be used until 1670, where it first appears in Hempstead Town records. Contrary to popular belief, the name Near Rockaway did not gain its directional prefix for its geological relation to what is now Far Rockaway. As a matter of fact,
E
the area received the name for its respective relation to Hempstead. Near Rockaway being “near” Hempstead and Far Rockaway being “far” from Hempstead. By 1688, Joseph Haviland, an experienced mill operator from England, was given permission to build his mill on the banks of what was soon to be known as the Mill River. The first of seven mills to be built at the spot, Haviland’s mill undoubtedly kick started the growth and settlement of the area. The mill, which produced flour, and eventually drove saw blades to cut wood, would remain at its economic center well into the late 19th Century. Near Rockaway once included the present day villages of Rockville Centre, Lynbrook and East Rockaway. To the south, houses sprang up in what would later be known as East Rockaway. By 1785 Parson’s Corners, located to the west of the river, at the present day intersection of Ocean Avenue and Merrick Road, consisted of 40 houses and farms, a church, a tavern, a one-room school house and a general store that doubled as a post office. To the east of the river a thriv-
ing hamlet rose to prominence in today’s Rockville Centre. By 1849, a great schism would ensue. Those east of the Mill River, then called Parson’s Creek, were fed up with making the trip to the post office in Parson’s Corners. They demanded their own post office and their own identity. After an attempt to take the name Smithtown, the people of the village settled on the name Rockville Centre. Change would soon come to the west side of the river as well. By mid century the economic center of the area would begin to drift further west, towards the five corners of Atlantic Avenue, Merrick Road, Broadway and Hempstead Avenue. In 1853, the village took the name Bloomfield. This was shortlived, and by 1855 it was renamed Pearsall’s Corners after wealthy landowner, shopkeeper, and undertaker Wright Pearsall. The name would change over the years: Pearsallville (1870), Pearsall’s (1873) and finally Lynbrook (1894), a name which is taken from the city of Brooklyn because of the influx of city folk to this area due to the introduction of the South Side Railroad in 1876.

The book and the painting depict the shipwrecks that occured in the winter of 1836-37. Near Rockaway prospered in shipping and milling over the years, even after several sales of the land. The village's name was changed in 1869 to East Rockaway, and was incorporated in 1900, with Floyd Johnson as its president. At the time of incorporation the town had a population of 969.

History of East Rockaway Entertaining the well-to-do at Henri's
Courtesy Lynbrook Historical Collection
This picture was taken in May of 1917 by Leo Bock, a noted photographer of the time. It was taken facing north on Atlantic Avenue crossing Stauderman Avenue. Some of the buildings are still recognizable as the marchers crossed the then trolley track and rail lines. By Patricia C. Sympson, Ph.D. President, Historical Society of East Rockaway & Lynbrook
H
enri Charpentier is remembered locally for his restaurant The Original Henri’s Restaurant and Bar on Scranton Avenue between Irving Place and Waverly Avenue. The establishment had a Lynbrook post office address, but was in the incorporated village of East Rockaway. It opened in 1910 and was closed about 1938 – after being done in by Prohibition. There is even talk that there was a tunnel from East Rockaway harbor to bring in the illegal booze to Henri’s. Charpentier owned a second house in East Rockaway wherein it is rumored he may have kept his precious spirits. Charpentier was considered a renowned chef. Tales are told of the famous, "Diamond Jim" Brady, Theodore Roosevelt, Sarah Bernhardt and many other notables who came to dine at Henri’s. In the spring of 1917, the French government sent a delegation, known as the Joffre-Viviani Mission, to the United States to seek aid and public support for the war. Marshal Joseph Joffre,
who was known for defeat of the Germans at the first battle of the Marne in 1914 and René Viviani, French Prime Minister during the first year of the war, were determined to ascertain exactly what would encompass United States’ participation. Where does Henri Charpentier enter the picture? Remember he hosted the well-to-do, and one day, he received word from a friend in Paris to prepare a luncheon for four on May 13. Charpentier invited Joffre to dine at his restaurant. May 13 was a Sunday, and Henri orchestrated what he did best. The sailors from the Amiral Aubé as well as the French Ambassador were the recipients of Henri’s largesse. The Home Defense League of Lynbrook quickly assembled many organizations to greet the French officials and Frenchmen from the warships in New York Harbor. Among the locals were the Bugle, Fife and Drum Corps, a delegation from the Christ Church, a delegation from Rosedale and Rockville Centre, field music, St. Raymond’s cadets, Home Defense League members, Boy Scouts of Lynbrook and East Rockaway, Campfire Girls from Lynbrook and Valley Stream and American Naval
members assembled to meet the Frenchmen. They met the French at the pipeline (what we know today as Sunrise Highway). The parade proceeded to Scranton Avenue and Henri’s. All were well wined and dined à la Henri. Herein is the tale as told by Henri in Life à la Henri: "There were many faces watching Joffre as he mounted the steps to my threshold. What I said to him then about France caused that splendid old man to lift his white mustache; he opened his arms and we embraced. I was a little concerned when I saw my tears were falling on the dark blue tunic of that great solider, but I was content when I saw his tears falling on my white apron.” Henri is quoted as follows as he prepared lobster, one of his favorite dishes, for his special guest. “I spoke to that lobster when I placed him, alive, in cold water. ‘My big fellow,’ I said, ‘you are to go to sleep relaxed and peaceful so your meat will be tender when you blend your being with that of a hero.’” Charpentier loved every mintute of entertaining the rich and famous. What glamor and embellishment he brought to East Rockaway and Lynbrook!

Village of East Rockaway W elcome to the Incorporated Village of East Rockaway, our Community by the Bay. Our village government is committed to each and every one of our neighbors and local business in the community. We strive to maintain our nautical village’s waterfront charm, ensuring that East Rockaway remain a great place to live, work and raise a family. The village board and I, including our newest trustee, Steve Fried, are dedicated to providing top-notch village services at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers. After three tax cuts in four years, we recently again passed a no-net-tax increase budget that qualifies middle class homeowners for a New York State property tax freeze rebate. Our village bruno F. finances also received a multiromano level bond upgrade to its highest rating in recent memory. East Rockaway continues to thrive. We’re a great place for any new homeowner or senior. My administration is committed to keeping East Rockaway moving forward. We will continue to operate government at its best by doing more with less, and by taking measures to ensure our one square mile village continues to be an even better place to live, work and raise a family. More importantly, there’s always something to do in town through our civic and community groups, fraternal organizations and wonderful neighbors. I am committed to leading East Rockaway down the same path started by former Mayor Francis T. Lenahan: valuing each and every taxpayer dollar to ensure our Community by the Bay remains responsive to residents, provides top-notch governmental services to every middle class family and senior, as well as continue to improve village finances for our future. Welcome home to East Rockaway. bruno romano Mayor

How to reach the Herald
n many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, but must be typed and double-spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication. The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000 ext. 235 or email mromero@liherald.com.

s the new school year approaches, the Lynbrook Public Schools continue to move ahead with innovative programs that will provide our students with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce. Our district has made it a priority Dr. Melissa to build a solid foundation in science, Burak technology, engineering and math. The Summer STEM Academy, now in its second year, continues to provide middle school students with an opportunity to explore their interests in video game design and robotics in a collaborative and creative environment. Our One to World tablet program for sixth-graders, which was rolled out last year, will be expanded this year to include seventh-graders. At the elementary schools, the math rotation model will be continued. This model starts with a mini-lesson, followed by small-group instruction, allowing teachers to give each student individual attention to help them achieve mastery of each new skill. Science lab kits, which were introduced last year at the elementary level, will be utilized to encourage creative exploration of the sciences. The high school internship program will continue to enable students to gain real-world experience in the workforce through local school-business partnerships.
The CDOS program provides career development and occupational training for high school students, helping them gain valuable job skills to prepare for success after high school. This year, a transition coordinator will continue to guide students and their parents with ongoing assessment and career counseling. The district is also happy to announce that a boys' swim team will be introduced to the athletics program through a partnership with the Rockville Centre School District. In addition, a great deal of work has taken place in our building facilities. We are grateful to the community for its continued support of educational initiatives that help us achieve our goals. Passage of the budget and proposition proposals has allowed us to strive for our maximum potential. To keep abreast of all the happenings in the district, please visit our website at www.lynbrookschools.org, or download our app to read about the latest district news. Our calendar can be found on the homepage. We welcome you to join us at the many concerts, theater productions and sporting events that will take place throughout the year. We are looking forward to a productive upcoming school year by continuing to serve the students and community of the Lynbrook Public Schools. Dr. Melissa Burak Superintendent, Lynbrook

s the upcoming school year approaches, the East Rockaway School District remains committed to providing our students with a comprehensive and thoughtprovoking education. The administration continues to work diligently with the Strategic Planning Steering Committee to formulate a fiveyear strategic plan to guide the Lisa Ruiz district’s future. The initial draft of the plan will be presented to the Board of Education at a public meeting in November. This summer, members of the administration received professional development on excellence and equity, presented by Dr. Robert Jarvis, director of equity initiatives at University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education. They will also take part in a Long Island consortium on the same topic during the school year. In addition, the administrators participated in a retreat to work on instructional premiums to be rolled out to the faculty. These research-based instructional best practices will be the focus of teacher professional development throughout the upcoming school year. The district is pleased to announce the hire of several new faculty and staff members, including an

ESL teacher, a .5 social worker, two high school art teachers, and three English teachers, who will serve students in both the junior and senior high grade levels. A special education teacher for Centre Avenue, two teaching assistants at Rhame Avenue and two Academic Intervention Services support teachers at the high school, one in English language arts and the other in mathematics, have also been hired. This fall, we look forward to providing each student in grades five and nine with tablet devices for use as part of their classroom instruction and have provided our teachers with the necessary training to assist them in successfully integrating this technology. We are also excited to announce the launch of our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/eastrockawayschools, and hope that you “like” our page and follow our school news. Other recent district highlights include security enhancements at all three buildings, a beautification project that was completed at the high school and the finalization of design plans for an electronic marquee sign to be installed at the high school this fall. As a district, we are grateful to the community for its ongoing support throughout the school year, especially during the annual budget process. Your steadfast commitment is integral to our students’ success.

The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. The Chamber promotes and encourages the general business interests of the Village of Lynbrook. The Chamber has had an exciting first half of the year by participating in many great local events such as Patriots Weekend and marching in the Memorial Day parade. It was great fun to see so many familiar faces along the Linda parade route and feel the town Stephenson spirit and pride from the residents. I had the great pleasure of representing the Chamber at the Senior Award dinner where I presented five very worthy graduates with scholarships. I also attended the pre-prom party for the Lynbrook High School graduates. These events are a perfect example of the Chamber giving back to the community. The Lynbrook Chamber continues to support other events such as the classic car shows on Thursday nights through the summer showcasing classic cars and fabulous music. LYNBROOK/EAST ROCKAWAY GUIDE
Greetings from the chamber
his is the 13th year the East Rockaway Chamber of Commerce has been serving the residents and friends of our community. The Chamber focuses on the needs of our members thru community events, fundraisers and business services. The goals of the Chamber for 2015 are to increase membership Michael B. participation, expand our busiHawksby ness districts and form partnerships with the village and other charitable organizations to spur growth and prosperity. I took over the presidency in May 2015, and with that the responsibility of continuing the great work of the past board members. As the economic climate changes with the way people shop and where they shop, there is work to be done to adapt to these changes. East Rockaway is not immune to the evolving needs of the community and servicing them in our business districts. We as a Chamber are excited and motivated to meet the challenge. Sincerely, Michael B. Hawksby East Rockaway Chamber of Commerce
