FRANKLIN SQUARE HISTORY

C

entrally located in what was once the large, grassy Hempstead Plains, Franklin Square was first used as grazing land, and then used as farmland after the American Revolution. The northern portion of Franklin Square — along with Elmont, Rosedale, Valley Stream, Laurelton, Springfield, Franklin Square, West Hempstead and Jamaica — was once Fosters Meadow, a German farming community.

Fosters Meadow, which was owned by the Dutch in the 1600s and purchased by Thomas and Christopher Foster in 1647, was settled by a German farming population in 1850. Farmers would transport produce from Franklin Square to New York City markets, the most well-known being Wallabout Market in Brooklyn. During the time that Fosters Meadow existed, Franklin Square's southern section was forested by Munson Oak and Dogwood woods. In the fall of 1643, the Rev. Robert Fordham and John Carman, two enterprising gentlemen, crossed Long Island Sound by rowboat to negotiate with local Indians for a tract of land to establish a new community. According to the legend, representatives of the Massapequak, Mericoke, Matinecock and Rockaway tribes met with the men at a site slightly west of the current Denton Green. The Indians sold approximately 64,000 acres, much of the present day towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead, for items worth less than $100 today. The impetus behind the name “Franklin Square,” however, remains a mystery. While some have suggested that it is named after founding father Benjamin Franklin, the statesman has no historical connection to the area. Others believe that the community was named after a local resident, but no historical records provide a name. In 1790, President George Washington made his famous tour of Long Island and passed through the town, writing in his diary that the area was “entirely treeless, except for a few scraggly fruit trees.” In the spring of 1840, future poet Walt Whitman served as the schoolmaster of the Trimming Square school district, located at the meeting point of Franklin Square, Garden City South and West Hempstead, for three months. Things were rather quiet in the farm-based hamlet until 1852, when Louis Schroerer built a hotel along the recently paved Hempstead-Jamaica Turnpike, a pay road that had a

With the hotel came a sense of community, as well as large numbers of visitors and immigrants, especially Germans, looking for a new life away from New York City. Monroe Street School, located on Monroe Street, was built in the early 1900s. Franklin Square gained national recognition through a financial institution which, while now defunct, left a lasting mark on the corner of James Street and Hempstead Turnpike. Originally a local bank opened in 1926, the Franklin Square National Bank would eventually become the 18th largest bank in America. After weathering the financial storm of the Great Depression, the bank bucked the trend of larger Manhattan-based banks opening branches on Long Island after World War II by opening branches in the city. Its innovative style, however, could not stop the business from becoming the largest bank failure to date in the United States in 1974. The green-topped building would soon after be known as the EAB Building, then Citibank, and now Chase. In 2004, it was named a historical landmark by the Town of Hempstead. With the help of this strong financial leader, the town saw a steady rise in population up until the 1940s. At this point, Franklin Square transformed into one of the fastest-growing areas on Long Island. Fueled by its easy access to New York City and the large number of soldiers returning home from World War II, the farms that once dominated the landscape were completely replaced by homes by 1952. Today, the 2.9-square-mile suburb remains an active community with a strong local business core and some of the most acclaimed restaurants in Nassau County.

T

he flatlands that now comprise the unincorporated hamlet of Elmont were uninhabited by colonists until 1647. Before then, Elmont was home to a system of trails used by Algonquian-speaking Massapequak, Mericoke, Matinecock and Rockaway Indians. In the mid-1600s, the Rev. Robert Fordham and John Carman negotiated with the local natives for the approximately 64,000 acres that today make up much of the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. The Foster brothers of England decided to settle in the western fringes of the area. On July 4, 1647, Thomas and Christopher Foster purchased a large tract of land in western Hempstead, which they named Fosters Meadow. The land stretched from modern-day Elmont all the way to the South Shore, encompassing portions of Elmont, Franklin Square, Rosedale, Valley Stream, Laurelton, Springfield, West Hempstead and Jamaica. Initially using the pastureland to raise sheep and cattle, the Fosters decided the land would be good for farming, and sold sections of it to local farming families, including the Hendricksons, Coverts and Baylises — all of whose names live on in some of Elmont’s busiest streets. Unlike most citizens of the Town of Hempstead, most of the residents of Fosters Meadow supported the American Revolution, a view that angered the British troops enough to tear down the community’s church. After the war, the area saw steady growth, with many farmers moving out from Brooklyn and western Queens in search of more space. Around 1882, residents of the area decided to change the name of Foster’s Meadow to Elmont. While the true reason for the change has been lost to time, many mistakenly believe

it has to do with the town’s most popular tourist attraction: Belmont Park. The problem with this theory is that developer August Belmont II opened the home of the oldest and final leg of horseracing’s Triple Crown in 1905, 20 years after the name “Elmont” started to be used. In 1902, a syndicate headed by Belmont and former U.S. Navy Secretary William C. Whitney sought land on Long Island to build an elaborate track, modeled after the great race courses of Europe. They found what they were looking for in Elmont, and purchased 650 acres of land. The grand opening of Belmont Park on May 4, 1905, prompted the first of countless traffic jams in Long Island history, as more than 40,000 fans, in all manner of conveyance, tried to arrive by the first race post time of 3 p.m. Not all of them got to see Belmont’s Blandy, at 7-1, hold off 100-1 shot Oliver Cromwell to win the $1,500 Belmont Inaugural. The most celebrated race at Belmont Park, to this day, is the Belmont Stakes — the final jewel of racing’s Triple Crown. Since 1919, when Sir Barton was the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont, the “Test of Champions” has crowned but 11 winners of racing’s most prestigious prize. Elmont was never the same after the track opened. The large farms that covered the town were split up into smaller parcels and sold to housing developers, with many of the homes purchased by workers at the track. Neighborhoods began to spring up, including one developed by Jacob Wollkoff for Jewish immigrants seeking to move out of the city. Businesses sprouted along Hempstead Turnpike to serve workers and visitors. Early on, Belmont Park hosted air races as well as horse races, including the first international air meet ever held in the United States. Between the racetrack, its proximity to Queens and the post-World War I real estate boom, Elmont became an early and prime candidate for suburbanization. This story was compiled by Jackie Nash, the Franklin Square Historical Society and the NY Racing Association.

ranklin Hospital, a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is much more than a community hospital. With its focus on family-centered medicine, it offers a full range of top-notch healthcare services.

The 305-bed facility provides a wide range of services, including cardiology, oncology, gynecology, psychiatry, geriatrics, critical care, interventional radiology and ambulatory surgery primarily for patients from western Nassau and southeastern Queens counties. Franklin has received its designation as a stroke center by the New York state Department of Health. Franklin specializes in orthopedic and spine surgery, utilizing minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. The hospital’s Total Joint Replacement program brings together a team of specially trained providers to ensure optimal patient care from pre-op to recovery. Franklin Hospital was the first hospital on Long Island presently utilizing the world’s first knee replacement specifically designed to fit a woman’s anatomy. A new state of the art surgical unit is staffed by specially trained nurses with additional expertise in post-op care. The 120-bed Orzac Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation, located adjacent to the hospital, provides a convenient option for

patients requiring rehabilitation and long-term care services. The Orzac Center also houses the only adult day healthcare program in the North Shore–LIJ Health System which provides care to the frail elderly, while maintaining them in their own home. The program is offered seven days a week. Franklin Hospital was the second hospital in Nassau County to offer a wound care/hyperbaric medicine program. Two hyperbaric chambers, operated by specially-trained technicians, offer controlled oxygen-rich environments to expedite healing. Many other methods of treating hard-to-heal wounds are also offered. The Interventional Pain Management Center at Franklin Hospital uses a comprehensive multi-specialty approach which includes board certified neurologists and anesthesiologists to treat patients with a wide variety of pain-related conditions. The center’s specially trained providers are experts in wound care and treat the simplest to the most complex pain-related conditions. In 2002, the Hospice Care Network opened Nassau County’s first dedicated hospital and palliative care center at Franklin. This home-like facility gives families 24-hour access to their loved ones, who receive pain and symptom management, as well as emotional and spiritual support. For more information about the hospital or the North Shore–LIJ Health System go to www.northshorelij.com. TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER

T

he Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce is vibrant, growing and strives to sustain local commerce.

JOSEPH ARDITO, ESQ. President, Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce

568124

Most importantly, our chamber is dedicated to the Franklin Square community. Our membership consists of local business owners, managers and employees who all have a sincere interest in making Franklin Square a better place to live, work and play. You will find that our chamber members have a close personal connection with Franklin Square that goes beyond having a place of business here, whether it is the town where they grew up, where they currently live, have extended family in the area or have a special history with Franklin Square. Our chamber promotes our motto of “IF YOU CARE, SHOP THE SQUARE” and strives to keep business local. Best of all, our membership is very diverse, has so much to offer our town and you will find that whatever you may need can be found right here in Franklin Square! It is through the support of our membership that enables our Chamber and its members to give back to our community through local scholarships, beautification, holiday banners, and participation with our local PTA’s, charities and civic organizations. Our meetings are

held at local restaurants where you can enjoy the many flavors of Franklin Square, while being engaged by guest speakers, meeting local officials and networking with our vast membership. Our Chamber’s officers and board members are a dedicated group of varied business persons who have the best interests of Franklin Square at heart when devoting their time, attention and resources and we are grateful for their service. They also participate in so many other ways in Franklin Square, such as involvement in our schools, PTA’s, civic associations, charitable and not-for-profit organizations and our local government. We recommend that you frequently visit our website to learn of upcoming meetings with guest speakers and discussion of local issues, chamber and local events, chamber discounts, list of members, helpful links, and your connection to all that is Franklin Square! Visit us at: www.fschamberofcommerce.com We thank you for your support and ask that before you leave town and waste gas, shop local where you can give back to your own community. Remember, “IF YOU CARE, SHOP THE SQUARE!”

HOW TO REACH THE HERALD In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, but

must be typed and double-spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER

T

he Elmont Chamber of Commerce’s members are a dynamic group of business owners and professionals dedicated to the well being of Elmont. We are proud to be part of this Herald publication. The Herald has provided a handy guide, listing various community groups, schools and elected officials for easy reference, and to facilitate communication between groups. You will also find a listing of the local businesses that belong to our Chamber of Commerce. Please make note of them, because they form a group of people who are dedicated to keeping Elmont a great place to live, work and raise a family. If you are an Elmont business person or professional and share these goals, we need you on our team. Please contact me directly about the benefits of belonging to the Elmont Chamber of Commerce. And, I ask all residents to give our local businesses, whether they are in Elmont or Franklin Square, the opportunity to be of service to them. Their survival depends on the support of local residents. In return, your local business will invest in the community they do business in by hiring local people, paying local taxes, and by supporting our local organizations

Locals cheered after completing “Clean Up Elmont Day,” an event organized by the Elmont Dad’s Club. and civic projects. Your local merchants offer a wide variety of products and services and are ready to be of service to you and your family. Remember “Shop Local, Shop Elmont”. PAUL SAPIENZA President
