publishers

Hello, residents! We are proud to present our annual East Meadow Guide, a special supplement to the East Meadow Herald. Those of us who live here know that East Meadow is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide East Meadow ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the East Meadow Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www. LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results.

living in East Meadow The lovely community of East Meadow is a hamlet in Nassau County, within the Town of Hempstead. According to the last census, East Meadow has a population of approximately 38,000 people living in 12,800 housing units. It is 70 percent white, 5 percent AfricanAmerican and 12 percent Asian. About 80 percent of the population is 18 and older. SchoolS and library The East Meadow community has one public school district, comprised of two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Westbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools, Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools. The elementary level sees students from kindergarten through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade.

The district welcomed a new superintendent for 2015-16, Leon Campo, on an interim basis. Campo served as superintendent from 2006 to 2009. For the first time last year, the elementary schools featured fullday kindergarten. The East Meadow PTA Council, a coalition of school PTAs, is led by President Donna La Scala. East Meadow is also home to three parochial schools and eight nursery schools. The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection, and is also working to incorporate new technologies. Each year, it hosts EMcon, where thousands come to the library to celebrate the popular Japanese art called anime. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn. The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has approximately 260

volunteers. It is led by four commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Its current chief of department is John M. McGee. Parks and recreation Parks are a big part of the East Meadow community, and none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletic fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three 18-hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails. Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a 50-meter pool that is 68 meters long. Built in 1998, the swimming facility has hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions and is also open to the public. The Twin Rinks Ice Center opened to the public in the summer of 2014, adjacent to the Aquatic Center, an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center. Other parks in East Meadow include the Town of Hempstead-operated Edward J. Speno Memorial Park on East Meadow Avenue, named after Edward Speno, who was the first president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce in 1954. Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue,

also Town of Hempstead operated, is the home of a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool, at the intersection of East Meadow Avenue, sits East Meadow Town Square, designed and built by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. Veterans Park is home to an 1,800-pound marble statue, a steel beam from the World Trade Center and a commemorative footstone listing the names of East Meadow residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was installed by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club. community GrouPs The community boasts very active and diverse community organizations, including the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations (CEMCO), the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, the Pope Pius XII Knights of Columbus Council 4422, Knights of Pythias East Meadow Lodge 774 Alliance, and the Community Association of Stewart Avenue. The groups organize the community’s biggest annual events, including the Memorial Day parade, Community Pride Day, Culinary Delights and Christmas tree and menorah lightings in the winter. Veterans groups include American Legion Post 1082, Jewish War Veterans Post 709, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736. Churches, synagogues and mosques of all different faiths can be found throughout East Meadow, and several senior homes are also spread throughout the community.

Out and About

Unlike many other areas in solidly developed Nassau County, East Meadow is blessed to have many parks, open spaces and quiet places for families to enjoy the outdoors. And not too far away from East Meadow, there are many other parks and recreational facilities in Merrick, Westbury and Bellmore, not to mention the crown jewel of New York State Parks, Jones Beach. East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park is 930 acres, larger than Manhattan’s Central Park. Eisenhower includes three 18-hole golf courses, including the famous Red Course. The park also includes Nassau County’s September 11th Memorial. Another jewel in East Meadow is Speno Memorial Park, which has numerous facilities for fun, including basketball, handball, shuffleboard and tennis courts, a playground, a vita course and multi-purpose fields. Jones Beach, just 15 minutes south, has 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand ocean beach, with food, leisure activities and a superb nature center. See the list of this page of all the local and nearby places to enjoy the outdoors.

LIBRARIES The East Meadow Public Library library is more than just books. It’s programs and special events for all ages, art exhibits, reference service, magazines, college catalogs, civil-service tests, eBooks, iPads and more. Located in the heart of East Meadow on East Meadow Avenue near the intersection with Front Street, one could say that it is the epiccenter of the community. The library’s annual programing meets the demands of the community. In May of 2015, it hosted its fifth annual anime convention, known as EMcon, a vibrant, colorful celebration of the popular Japanese animation that draws in thousands of Long Islanders. The Library Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. To find out more about the library or its scheduled programming, visit the library’s website at www.eastmeadow.info.

I love that our kids are exposed not only to Hebrew but to Yiddish as well— and I know my grandparents would have loved it too. Our boys aren't memorizing alphabets or history books.
