Passion for the streets

Central Avenue — the heartbeat of the Five Towns

On Broadway
We drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere un less you're on a street. In this year's Living in the Five Towns, we explore the very streets that make these communities what they are. From the businesses, to the parks, to all the popular gathering spots. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more about the communities all of us love.

the crisis, the Nassau Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of communities that may have struggled at times, but communities that also are winning.
Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses grants at the height of the pandemic so that the merchants the lifeblood of the community could carry Nowon.

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. The Five Towns, however, remain strong. They are communities full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re Throughoutenergized.

The past two years were tough for the Five Towns, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did in Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012.
Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what the Five Towns is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as communities, are.
Be well and be safe.

Woodmere is home to Jason steinmetz, the first orthodox Jew drafted by Major League Baseball and his father, Elliot, coach of the Yeshiva University men’s basketball team.
The Five Towns Community Chest (now Community Chest south shore) was established in 1931. It’s the first time Five Towns was used to encompass Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere.
Cedarhurst and Lawrence are incorporated villages. Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere are hamlets. All the communities are in the Town of Hempstead.
Henry Bacon, the architect of the Lincoln Memorial, designed woodmere High school. Now gone, the school was built in 1926.
The Five Town Young Men’s-Young Women Hebrew Association was incorporated in 1980. The organization eventually became the JCC of the Greater Five Towns, and is now The Marion & Aaron Gural JCC.
Congregation Beth Sholom, the first Countysynagogueorthodoxinnassau , was founded in Lawrence in 1950.
The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway was formed when Hillel merged with the Hebrew institute of Long island in 1978.
Hewlett native Dr. Deborah Asnis, an infectious disease specialist, discovered and reported the first human cases of west nile virus in 1999.
Until it became an incorporated village in 1910, Cedarhurst was called Ocean Point. Its shopping district, still a local business hub, was known as the Rodeo Drive of the Five Towns in the 1950s and ’60s.
Inwood was home to J. Russell sprague, the first county executive of Nassau County.
Five Towns
woodmere Academy merged with Lawrence Country Day school to form Lawrence Woodmere Academy in 1990.

A second company of firefighters was formed in 1902. Eight years later, the two companies combined forces and established the Inwood Fire Department.

However, Doughty Boulevard — known as McNeil Avenue up until the turn of the 20th century — has the historic honor of being named for a long-ago local lawmaker, Assemblyman George Doughty, whose bill in Albany took Inwood and a portion of Lawrence from New York City, placing it in Hempstead town.Coming off Burnside Avenue heading south on Doughty Boulevard, there is the growing Yeshiva Ketana of Long Island that celebrated its 26th anniversary this past year. At the intersection of Doughty and Mott Avenue is the John J. Olivieri Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1582 memorial, where the community’s Memorial Day parade ends and the Veterans Day ceremony takes place.
