Stuart RichnerThose of us who live here know that Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, and Inwood, along with Atlantic Beach, are wonderful, diverse communities with rich histories. Our annual guide is a testament to their post-pandemic resurgence. Not only does it include vital information about the Five Towns, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of all these communities.
Think of Living in the Five Towns as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. An abundance of services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion or needs, these communities have much to offer.
Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence, and Woodmere form a vibrant cluster on Long Island, each contributing to the area's thriving atmosphere. With a mix of suburban charm and proximity to urban amenities, these neighborhoods offer residents a high quality of life.
Residents enjoy a range of recreational activities such as county, town and village parks, local businesses that offer a variety of merchandise and culinary delights, and cultural offerings from fairs and festivals to celebratory to somber remembrances, which make these communities desirable places to live and raise families.
To support and enhance the local economies, several associations play a pivotal role. The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District, the Lawrence Association, and the Inwood Civic Association actively promote businesses and community development. These organizations foster collaboration among local entrepreneurs, coordinate events that engage residents, and work to maintain the unique character of each neighborhood while promoting economic growth.
We hope that you find this edition of Living in the Five Towns useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks per year.
Be well and be safe.

The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere — including North Woodmere, served by School District 14.
Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. The business association gives our members daily social media advertising posts. We do ribbon-cuttings for new businesses.
We enjoy the support of Town Council members Melissa Miller and Laura Ryder; County Legislators Howard Kopel and Denise Ford; County Executive
Bruce Blakeman; Town Supervisor Donald Clavin; and State Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick and Assemblyman Eric "Ari" Brown. These public officials and our residents are the ones who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside.
The business association is an integral part of the community. We hold Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations and other community events at our Veterans Memorial Plaza. We organize the Memorial Day Parade and sponsor Kids Night Out, as well as other activities.
Our award-winning school district, excellent library and shopping areas are what help unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques, and use our service businesses to help us remain a strong business hub.

Mimi Weinerman is one of the many who lend a hand at Cedarhurst-based The Marion & Aaron Gural Jewish Community Center.
The Gural JCC is a community resource for the Five Towns, Far Rockaway and a few other surrounding towns offering academic, recreational, social activities, programs and services. Originally known as the Greater Five Towns Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association, the organization hones in on Jewish life and experience for its members.
Mimi initially became involved with the Gural JCC when a friend suggested they go help at the soup kitchen. Since she began, Mimi has completed roughly 10 years of work serving her neighbors.
Soon after she began, Mimi started a group called Café Europa at Congregation
Beth Sholom with the help of Gural JCC. The program is hosted every Tuesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., offering variations of light lunch, exercise and lectures to members involved with the Beth Sholom Sisterhood.
Since the programs were created, Mimi has spent her Tuesdays at the shul and her Thursdays at the Gural JCC, where she assists with the Chaverim program — a place for Holocaust survivors to gather for different types of activities and lunch.
“It’s all about the people,” Mimi said. "I’ve met so many wonderful people, very resilient people.”
The Gural JCC has several other opportunities for volunteers to step up and help neighbors, including home delivery, bringing food from its Rina Shkolnik Kosher Food Pantry to homebound clients. There is also friendly visiting that provides senior citizens with company, along with providing pantry assistance, helping
to stock and maintain the pantry, community gardening, keeping up the JCC natural life — LIFE program assistance — spending time with adults with disabilities. There's also Get Us Moving, leading older adults in exercise, as well as "Celebrate," serving food for special occasions and senior program assistance. And no one can forget the help needed for the adult day care and wellness programs.
Laurie Brofsky, the volunteer services manager at the JCC, joined the organization years after Mimi — and was immediately inspired by

her.
“She’s kind, she’s caring, she’s capable, she’s reliable, she’s trustworthy," Brofsky said. "She’s been with us for a very long time.”
Beyond volunteering, the Gural JCC also hosts early childhood, youth, family, special needs and adult programs. It provides support services and shares resources related to nutrition, drugs, alcohol and mental health.
Teens and adults can apply to volunteer through the Gural JCC website, GuralJcc.org.
And Mimi Weinerman gets a lot of out all this work, too. “There’s a warmth that I get from it.”
In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us.
For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday before publication. We also welcome news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. These items are printed at no charge to you.
We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday before publication, and should be no more than 350 words.

Inwood resident Blanca Bran was just an infant living in Honduras when her father died, leaving behind Blanca and her 10 siblings.
Although she was too young to remember her father, Blanca does recall the struggles her mother had providing for all her children by herself. In fact, when she turned 15, Blanca moved a town away to help ease her mother's workload, and to attend college.
“I had an aunt who told my mother when I was 15 years old that I could live with her and put me to study in college in Honduras,” she said. “Her reasoning to ask my mother was because (my mother) had too many
kids to care for, and it became very difficult for her to raise that amount by herself.”
Blanca’s life changed in 1991 when she and her aunt moved to the United States — Queens, in the beginning, before first moving to Hempstead, and then finally calling Inwood home, raising her two children. With her young ones in school, Blana worked as a house cleaner. While some would focus on how much work there was, Blanca instead was inspired, recalling the struggles her mother had sacrificing for her children.
Blanca was in a somewhat similar situation. She didn’t finish college, and was now working to provide for her family. At times, it was hard. But despite those struggles, she wanted to help those in her community.
Asking herself how she could help, Blanca found the answer when she visited the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence when she was in need

of food herself.
The center is home to Gammy’s Pantry, run by Inwood's Sasha Young. The pantry was launched in 2019 in a small space in the Community Center offering food to those in need.
Blanca met Young months before the coronavirus pandemic would change everything. Her first visit was enough for Blanca to want to volunteer at the pantry as the lack of volunteers inspired her to be one.
Since then, she has made it part of her itinerary to go directly to the community center every day after work Monday through Friday, not showing any sign that she just came from a workday shift — always with a smile on her face.
“I love helping the people there and the feeling you get when you help,” Blanca said. “I love when I get the chance to see people come to the pantry and leave here with food and are happy.”
Blanca can now be seen all around the community center doing anything to help. From giving out fruits, vegetables, snacks and going on trips to the supermarket, she is hard to miss with her positive attitude.
“When the fruits and vegetables come, we
Tim Baker/Herald photos Top photo: Got milk? Blanca Bran brings out a box of leche — Spanish for 'milk.'have to clean the good ones and leave out the not-so-good ones,” she says. “We also go to BJ’s or Costco to buy snacks for the kids for afterschool, because they do work here and sometimes need something to eat.”
But why does she do it? The answer to that question can be found in Blanca's childhood.
“In my country, we grew up with nothing,” she said. “I saw firsthand the struggles my mother had to go through to provide for us. And I love helping people out because of what we went through.”

Hernesto Galdamez/Herald file The Cedarhurst board of trustees approved the village’s budget. From left village attorney Evan Newman, Trustees Daniel Plaut and Israel Wasser, Mayor Benjamin Weinstock and Trustee Myrna Zisman.Growing up in Massapequa, Bill Dubin and his family considered themselves poor. But, they understood that other families were struggling much more than they were. Despite their struggles, Bill’s mother, Myrna Dubin, did everything she could to help those who needed it.
“My mother once said, ‘No matter what, there’s always somebody that needs something.’ “
Bill recalls his childhood home being used as a place for people they knew when they needed a place to stay temporarily.
At times, it resulted in Bill sleeping on the living room couch — really for most of his childhood, which he didn’t mind, because she inspired him to do something to help someone in need.
“That’s the way my mother was, you know,” Bill said, with a chuckle.
“She was like, ‘We have nothing. We are poor. But, there are others that will have less than you.’”
After high school, Bill attended SUNY Oneonta for undergrad, where he was inspired by his mother.
He recalls his first acts of volunteerism with the Special Olympics, an organization that allows inclusion regardless of ability or disability.
Bill called Hewlett home after graduate school at the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Upon graduation, he was offered to work at the Hewlett-Woodmere school district in its high school as a special education teacher. Living only a short distance away from the high school, Bill would be seen walking to school like he was a student.
Now calling the Five Towns home, he was determined to follow in his mother’s footsteps in his new home.
“I began tutoring a boy in geometry at his house after I met his dad and he asked me if I did any charity work,” he said. “I told him I did some in college.”
His volunteerism wouldn’t stop at tutoring as Bill would begin coaching many of the sports programs in high school — such as its basketball, football and lacrosse teams finding ways to not only win as a team in the game but off the field/court help the community.
My mother once said, ‘No matter what, there’s always somebody that needs something.’
Bill Dubin
One act was this past year. His boys varsity basketball team helped raise $15,600 for SIBS — Survivorship in Brothers and Sisters — surpassing his annual goal of $15,000. The program serves children between 5 and 17 who live with a sibling or parent with cancer or medical illness.
He serves as co-secretary, and notes he is a cancer survivor.
Bill spent the last few years founding and coaching the school’s Unified Basketball team. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics New York form the league.
The league’s goal is to promote social inclusion in sports for students with disabilities.
“I think they (students with disabilities) were left out in general,” he said. “I thought this was a great
opportunity for them to be a part of something and be part of a team. They weren’t just left out, they were left out in general and in society.”
Now retired as a teacher, he attached his name to many other local organizations during his teaching tenure for more than two decades.
One of them is being a member of the Peninsula Kiwanis board of directors, where, for the last five years, he has provided backpacks filled with school supplies for more than 200 students in need.
His mother, Myrna, died from complications of breast cancer in 2000. Her willingness to help inspired Bill to do the same during college, as a teacher and coach, something he thinks his mother would be proud about if she were still here, he said.
“That’s what we do,” he said.
Bill Dubin watches from the bench as his player lays up the ball for two points.Bill Bressant joined the Five Towns Kiwanis in 1984, and today finds himself more active than ever. He was introduced to Kiwanis by his future father-in-law, George Amitrano Sr. — himself, a past Kiwanis president. Just a few years later, not only did Bill marry George's daughter, Jeanette — a member of homemakers and health services for Kiwanis — he moved from Brooklyn to Hewlett.
Getting Bill to join was an easy sell. George told him it was the perfect place to get to know a lot of people and learn a lot about the community. Within just a few years, Bill himself found himself in the role of president after rising through the ranks and serving in several positions, including recording secretary, financial secretary, and vice president.
When he wasn't at home or doing some new project with Kiwanis, Bill was mailman, working for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years until his retirement in 2015. But even before he hung up his mailbag, Bill would find time to take part in some Kiwanis activity two to three times a week.
“I'm not one to sit around my house and do
crossword puzzles,” Bill said.
“I like to get out and mingle with people and help the community,”
Since he retired, Bill has focused solely on volunteer acts, primarily with Kiwanis. Organizations like the Five Towns Kiwanis are pivotal to the neighborhood they serve.
“You get to know your community,” he said. “What makes it tick. What makes it run. And when you meet other people, or go to conventions and meet other Kiwanians, you find out what they're doing in their clubs and see how we can better the Five Towns club.”
Through volunteers and leaders like Bill Bressant, Kiwanis truly makes a difference by services like giving clothing, coats and canned goods to the Inwood food pantry. Or the annual drive to give turkeys to needy families. Kiwanis also hosts outings at various golf courses around the community, raising money for charities and
scholarships.
“When we have the seniors in high school who get the scholarships," Bill said, "they come back and tell us how they benefit and what college they went to, and how they're doing,”
And Kiwanians also celebrate each other. The annual pancake breakfast, for example, was named after George Amitrano after he passed away.
It has become an annual event where Kiwanis feeds the community and raises money for scholarships.
“It feels good,” Bill says. “And I enjoy it a lot.”
It's been 11 years since Frank Tavella joined the Peninsula Kiwanis, and the 79-year-old has an act of kindness from a friend to thank for it.
Victor Liotta wanted Frank to join the club — but it didn't hit home until Hurricane Sandy hit his. Quite literally.
Frank’s Island Park house was severely damaged. Victor had friends in a lumberyard who brought much-needed supplies to Frank’s house to help rebuild.
Victor didn't expect anything in return, but Frank couldn't let that act go unnoticed. So he paid Victor back by finally becoming a Kiwanian.
Frank is now semi-retired, working remotely once a week for a Baltimore-based clothing distributor. Before Kiwanis, he had never joined any community service group before, and was hesitant to join the Peninsula club. But after Victor brought him to a meeting, Frank began opening up to the members — and to community service.
“I wanted to pay him back because he really helped me out a lot,” Frank said of Victor. “I’ve known him for a long time, and he always kept asking me. But I always said I don’t like to join
clubs. But when I got to the club, all the fellows were really nice. Everybody helps each other, and we all do things just for the good of doing things. We don't get any real rewards other than being appreciated.”
The club has hosted several community events including a wine night, which raised
The camp is located six miles north of Rome in the western foothills of the Adirondack. It accepts both boys and girls between 8 and 14, and affords opportunities to participate in creative outdoor group experiences while developing much-needed leadership skills.
This summer, the Peninsula Kiwanis sent 70 kids — all for free. The club has also done work with Hewlett House, a community learning resource center for cancer patients and their families.
When Peninsula Kiwanians went to Rome to complete bathroom renovations and electrical work, Frank was there. He's also been a part of the Christmas Dream Breakfast program, providing both presents and gifts for those who might not get either otherwise.
The club also donates food to Our Lady of Good Counsel and the Rena Skolnick Food Pantry, which is a part of the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC in Cedarhurst. Peninsula Kiwanis hosts annual golf outings to raise money for
local organizations such as SIBS Place and Camp Anchor. No matter the event Frank has always been happy to lend a helping hand and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. “As long as I can walk, I’m OK to help. Whenever people are in need, we go.”
