W

e are proud to present our annual Five Towns Guide, a special supplement to the Nassau Herald.

Those of us who live here know that the Five Towns is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide we've ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Clifford Richner Publisher

At the 30th annual Sunny Atlantic Beach Club Volleyball Tournament in Atlantic Beach, Dylan Mandelbaum, went high to make a block and score a point.

ATLANTIC BEACH Established in 1926, the 1-square mile village is a picturesque community known for its beaches and proximity to the beach clubs that dot the shoreline. Land developer William Austin’s plan was to create a posh summer resort for the rich and famous. He had begun selling land plots, but the Great Depression hindered his work. The elegant Nautilus and Atlantic Beach hotels already existed as top-notch tourist attractions for wealthy vacationers. The land eventually divided and sold as residential plots. In 1950, the Nassau County Bridge Authority was established to build a bridge that would connect Atlantic Beach to Lawrence. Atlantic Beach was incorporated as a village in 1962. It is governed by a mayor, along with four trustees. Fire protection is primarily provided by the Long Beach Fire Department. The adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates are unincorporated sections of the Town of Hempstead. Famous residents have included Guy Lombardo and Peter Lorre, while infamous organized crime figure Meyer Lansky was a summer visitor. The village has hosted the taping of the TV show “Royal Pains” and scenes from “The Sopranos” and “Goodfellas.” The Corleone estate in “The Godfather” and

the fictional beach club in the movie “The Flamingo Kid” were both set in Atlantic Beach. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the village's population is 1,891. The median income is $100,893 and there are 523 single family homes, according to American Factfinder.

CEDARHURST Cedarhurst is best known for its famous shopping on Central and Cedarhurst avenues that not only includes national brand stores, but also many locally owned and unique businesses. The 1-square mile village, now known as Cedarhurst, was settled before the American Revolution. During the War of Independence, much of the land was occupied by British troops and Tory sympathizers including the Martin Family, the original residents of Rock Hall, now a Town of Hempstead museum in Lawrence. According to local lore, the village took its name from the grove or “hurst” of cedar trees near the post office. Cedarhurst is governed by a mayor and four trustees. Fire protection is provided by the volunteer Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department and it is within the Lawrence School Continued on page 14

LAWRENCE Lawrence shares Central Avenue with Cedarhurst, but more of its commercial area is along Rockaway Turnpike and in the Bay Harbor Mall that includes national chains such as Best Buy, Staples and Bed, Bath and Beyond. The village, which owns and operates the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club, is governed by a mayor and four other board members. Fire protection is provided by the volunteer Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. It is in the Lawrence School District. Three brothers, Newbold, Alfred N. and George N. Lawrence purchased all of the area farms in 1870. Known as Rockaway Neck, they sought to turn the land into an exclusive residential area. They donated enough money to build a train station so the Long Island Rail Road could stop in their new community. But being too expensive, the lots didn’t sell, so the brothers subdivided the land to accommodate smaller homes. Renowned criminal lawyer Ben Brafman is a resident, shoe magnate Steve Madden and rock guitarist Leslie West grew up in Lawrence, and it is where real-life characters Henry and Karen Hill played by Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco in

George Heulitt settled the area, then known as “Hempstead” on Jan. 2, 1718. He gave his son, John Heulitt, a house and 50 acres of meadow and woodland called “George Heulitt’s Poynt.” Augustus J. Hewlett, a descendant of George, donated a strip of land 31-feet wide to the Long Island Rail Road on June 21, 1897 for a station to be named Hewlett. Renowned artist Ross Bleckner and Oscar-winning film director Errol Morris grew up in Hewlett. Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck. All are governed by a mayor and village board. Joseph Auerbach, famous lawyer, bought most of the land that is now Hewlett Harbor and built a summer residence. During construction, the remains of an Algonquin chief were found. He was buried with copper beads called “Sewan” by the Indians. Auerbach built a country club named after the beads. Sold in the 1920s, the Sewane Club’s new owners determined that the two square miles was more than they needed. The remaining land was sold for re one-family residential lots. No land was permitted to be used for business and after it was incorporated as a village in 1925, that was included in its zoning regulations. Another attorney, Carleton Macy, developed and built Hewlett Bay Park in 1927. Hewlett High School and Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls are in the village. Hewlett Neck is the smallest of the trio. It covers only three-quarters of a square mile and was developed on a portion of Woodmere, also in 1927. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population of Hewlett is 6,819. The median income is $11,473 and there are 2,168 single family homes, according to American Factfinder. A hamlet in Hempstead Town, Inwood is in the Lawrence School District and has its own fire department. Its forested marshland was where Indians gathered more than 200 years ago for its vast reserves of oysters, clams and mussels, which were eaten and the shells were used to make wampum. The first of two major waves of settlers occurred in the early 1800s. These people moved from Hempstead Town to the then unnamed area to fish and farm. The fishermen called themselves “North West Pointers” based on their location on the isolated Rockaway Peninsula. They were known as a rambunctious and hard-living group, who often got drunk and fought, which disturbed the quiet, peaceful farmers. Though the region informally became known as Westville in 1870, the name had to be changed as the 1,100 residents lobbied to get a post office in 1888, and not to be confused with upstate Westville. Inwood was chosen from among the names considered, including Bayhead, Custer and Pike’s Peak. The origin of the

LIVING IN THE FIVE TOWNS Continued from page 16

Inwood name is a mystery. While still Westville, the area got a Long Island Rail Road station in 1869. In 1885, a strong economy helped develop the local area’s primary business of shipping shellfish to international markets. Italian and Albanian immigrants comprised the second surge of settlers in the early 1990s. After World War II, Inwood’s population increased dramatically. It is home to the Inwood Country Club, the sire of the 1921 PGA Championship and the 1923 U.S. Open. Nassau County’s first County Executive, J. Russell Sprague, was born in Inwood as well as Ray Barbuti, who won two gold medals at the 1928 Olympics. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Inwood's population is 9.792. The median income is $56,364 and there are 2,236 single family homes, according to American Factfinder.

WOODMERE Woodmere, a Town of Hempstead hamlet, is the largest Five Towns community, covering 2.6-square miles, and is the most populous. Fire protection is provided by the Woodmere Fire Department. It shares a shopping corridor on Broadway, a school district (Hewlett-Woodmere) and a business group (HewlettWoodmere Business Association) with its Hewlett neighbor.

It is also home to Lawrence Woodmere Academy and Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys. Samuel Wood, a retired liquor merchant from Brooklyn had a dream in 18969 to build a town and name it after himself. Wood purchased a plot land and named it “Woodsburgh.” He sold individual lots to millionaires for summer homes. In 1890, the Village of Woodsburgh was forced to change its name to Woodmere because of the Post Office’s confusion with upstate Woodsburgh. Wood, a bachelor, died in 1878. With no one to inherit his land and vast fortune. All of his holding went to Abraham Hewlett, descendent of the first white settlers of the area. He then sold Woodsburgh in 1901 to Robert L. Burton, a wealthy New York City investor, bought the land in Woodmere and sold it piece-by-piece for smaller residential lots. The smaller southern portion of Woodmere, known as Woodsburgh was incorporated as a village in 1912. Fashion designer Donna Karan (Hewlett High 1966), comedy writer Alan Zweibel and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California, were Woodmere residents. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population of Woodmere is 17,121. The median income is $129,638 and there are 4,393 single family homes, according to American Factfinder. Based on the 2010 census, Woodsburgh's population is 778.

CHAMBER GREETINGS CEDARHURST BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (B.I.D.) We're delighted that Cedarhurst continues to be the premier shopping village of the South Shore for quality fashion merchandise for women, men, children and the home. The Cedarhurst Business Improvement District (BID), formed in 1993, monitors retail establishments, offering property owners and merchants suggestions on how to improve the Cedarhurst shopping experience. We take pride in the cleanliness, safety and convenience of shopping in Cedarhurst. Thanks largely to the efforts of Mayor Andrew Parise, improvements have been made throughout the business district including new sidewalks, improved street lighting, attractive benches and tree plantings. BID is, in part, responsible for annual flower plantings and attractive fall holiday lighting and we work closely with our village government to ensure a pleasant shopping environment.

Accomplishments include free weekend parking in all municipal parking fields, year round and at designated times during the fall holiday season. The BID has updated our website, www.shopcedarhurst.com, and we welcome any suggestions for improving it and providing information you find useful. Other notable BID efforts include our famous Annual Sidewalk Sale, the Black Friday weekend sales event, our Merchants of Distinction Awards Program and many other community events. The Cedarhurst BID welcomes your thoughts and suggestions on making shopping in the village better for all of us. If you would like to attend a BID board meeting please email info@shopcedarhurst.com for the time and place. STEVE SCHNEIDER Chairman, Cedarhurst B.I.D.

HEWLETT-WOODMERE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed through a merger of the Hewlett Business Association and the Woodmere Merchants Association. The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed to bring together the merchants and professionals who are conducting business in, or have a practice in, the villages of Hewlett and Woodmere (including the areas of North Woodmere served by School District 14). This includes zip codes 11598, 11557, and parts of 11581. Our members support programs throughout the school district, the area's yeshivas and other civic agencies. This support provides the stimulus for activities that make Hewlett and Woodmere attractive communities to both live and work. Our primary goal is to increase the awareness of our neighbors, friends and residents from adjoining communities as to the merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. These steps could include, but are not limited to, supporting local school programs, upgrading and maintaining the main shopping areas, helping agencies locate in the two villages that provide programs for the benefit of the two villages. The HWBA has plans to increase Internet marketing and business through the uses of our web sites (this site and the upcoming Sho-

pHewlettWoodmere.com), Internet marketing and social media interactions. We enjoy the support of Town Councilmen Tony Santino and James Darcy, Supervisor Kate Murray, County Legislator Howard Kopel, County Executive Ed Mangano, State Sen. Dean Skelos, and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg. It is these public officials and others who look to an active association of business and professional individuals to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The HWBA's goal is to be an integral part of the community and its members subscribe to this credo. The school district, the library and in many ways, the shopping areas, truly unite what is known as HewlettWoodmere. The concept is one community with such an attractive wide variety of merchandise and services provided by friends and neighbors who are working to keep the community as attractive as it is. If you haven’t met all these talented entrepreneurs and professionals or availed yourselves of their merchandise and services ... do so! You are in for a treat. JAIME WYSOCKI President, Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association

Chartered in 1947, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library has gone through several renovations, the most recent nine years ago, to become the beautiful building it is today. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library is the repository for music and art in Nassau County. Their music and art collection began with donations from local music clubs and has grown to over 900 reference files, a circulating collection of over 10,000 titles, which includes scores, analytical performance editions of musical works, encompassing a wide range of musical tastes and levels, from amateur to the professional. The library’s large sound collection is in all formats: records, audio-cassette and CD's. Their art collection has over 12,000 slides, art index from 1959, large collection of art magazines, and extensive reference collection covering a large range of topics. During its last renovation, the community chose to build a professional concert hall. Through the generous donation of Herbert Z. and Rita Gold, Gold Hall was built. Gold Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall with 196 seats, theatrical lighting, beautiful Steinway grand piano, exceptional acoustics, sound system and lighting booth. Each year a few more quality touches are added to the hall. It is a professional hall, pleasing to the eye, and yet understated. Those who have performed in the hall are amazed that it is part of a library. TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
