or more than 15 minutes, 11 Richmond Police officers restrained Jose Luis Lopez-Rodriguez, some holding him facedown, hitting him, stunning him with a Taser, or kneeling on his neck as he shouted in Spanish, “Officers, you are killing me.” Minutes after he was put into an ambulance, his heart stopped, and he later died. He was 40 years old.

His death was attributed to “excited delirium,” a term challenged by medical experts and invoked by law enforcement to justify excessive force. More than two years after Lopez-Rodriguez’s arrest and death, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said it would not press charges against the officers, but significant concerns remain.

According to police interviews released by the District Attorney’s Office, Richmond Police responded to a domestic violence call on March 17, 2020. A young woman said Lopez-Rodriguez was attacking her mother, who had been in a relationship with him, per the official report. The caller and her mother’s names were redacted.

Lopez-Rodriguez was reportedly agitated when police arrived. The officers say they were told he had been under the influence of crack cocaine, alcohol and marijuana for at least three days without sleep.

The Law Enforcement Fatal Incident Report said that, with Lopez-Rodriguez handcuffed and facedown, multiple officers kneeled on his neck and shoulders, crisscrossed his legs, and struck him with

a Taser and batons.

Body camera footage from Officer Daniel Campos, obtained by the California Reporting Project, showed LopezRodriguez saying in Spanish several times, “Officers, you are killing me.” He said, “They’re killing me” in English.

Officers kneeled on his neck for more than five minutes. Lopez-Rodriguez said in Spanish, “I am telling the truth, and they are killing me.”Lopez-Rodriguez was taken to the hospital, but according to paramedics, within minutes of being put in the ambulance, he went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics tried to revive him. Lopez-Rodriguez’s breathing and heartbeat were restored after 15 minutes of emergency efforts at Richmond Kaiser.

He died March 19, 2020.

After conducting an autopsy, forensic pathologist Dr. Ikechi Ogan said LopezRodriguez died from acute cocaine toxicity due to excited delirium syndrome.

When the independent investigation was done — over a year after the incident — the autopsy had not yet been released by the Coroner’s Office. Investigative Officer Jerry Threet was “unable to analyze the causes of death and what role the actions of RPD officers may have played in causing Lopez’s death, if any,” the report read.

The purpose of the investigation was to examine any potential misconduct by RPD in the Lopez-Rodriguez case. Threet said that Officer Kenneth Ferraro’s “initial take down and subsequent chokehold of Lopez were unreasonable.” Threet also found

Oakland Woman Brings Vegan Mexican Food to Richmond

M

arbella Zepeda didn’t expect her career as a financial advisor to kick-start her vegan lifestyle journey, but her experience guiding others as they struggled with health and income troubles allowed her to see how vital eating habits are for a long, healthy life.

Born in Mexico City and raised in Oakland, Zepeda is no stranger to the hustle and grind of the immigrant experience, but at only 26 years old, she has, in her own words, “made it happen.”

Zepeda is a single mother of two young daughters, a full-time employee at People Helping People, a nonprofit that offers financial, education and housing advice to low-income Americans, and the owner of her very own food business: Vegan Vibes/Veganas Vibras, a pop-up specializing in tasty vegan re-creations of Mexican cuisine classics. Since early January, Zepeda has partnered with 7 Stars Holistic Healing Center, a cannabis dispensary in Richmond, to host her pop-up in its parking lot Fridays from noon to 5 p.m.

Zepeda was introduced to the vegan lifestyle herself four years ago and after noticing a significant improvement in her energy and ability to manage her weight, she educated herself on the benefits of the diet. After seeing an opportunity to improve the health of those around her, she dove headfirst into spreading her knowledge to others in her community.

“Obviously, one job is behind the grill, the other one is behind the computer, but I always tell myself, I’m OK with feeding bellies and feeding brains,” Zepeda said.

Approaching her third year as a financial advisor, Zepeda is already an expert at educating others on how to handle their finances such as making retirement plans and arranging for life insurance. Her years in the trade navigating the American healthcare system have shown repeatedly how devastating hospital bills can be to a family’s finances, and with her clients being primarily low-income people of color, she also saw how pervasive

unhealthy eating habits were in her own community.

“Honestly, that was the biggest thing — I wanted to start with where I was raised. I wanted to start it in my community,” Zepeda said. “I asked why can we go to every corner and have the same kind of taco truck and not have one vegan option?”

In many ethnic households, where food is integral to culture, veganism has a tendency to be overlooked and disregarded as little more than a pricey trend, but Zepeda is determined to change that misconception.

“When I started, my parents weren’t fully on board because you know, they’re Latinos, Hispanics, you know, normal Hispanics asking, ‘How are you going to give me a taco with no meat?’ ” But four years into Vegan Vibes, Zepeda has yet to run out of mouths to feed. Her business has grown large enough that she can now hire her first full-time employee — her father — who has come to embrace the vegan diet with open arms.

Zepeda spends her first half of the week and weekends at her financial advising job and Thursdays and Fridays prepping, cooking, selling and cleaning for Veganas Vibras.

The menu features three varieties of street tacos: beef, potato chorizo and her bestseller, chicken — all vegan and cruelty-free. The faux meats are marinated with in-house

seasoning and grilled before being topped with smooth avocado- and spicy habanero-based salsas as well as finely chopped cilantro and onions and a medley of grilled vegetables.

To drink, Zepeda offers several agua fresca options, into which she puts a lot of time and effort. Her vegan horchata requires her to grind an assortment of nuts and oats, then hand strain it all to make her own milk substitute. Her best-selling beverage doesn’t even have a name yet. Called “the green one” (for now), it is a mixture of cucumber and pineapple juices and chia seeds that give it a thick, hearty texture reminiscent of boba tea.

With her business gaining more traction every day, Zepeda says her next steps are to finally purchase a food truck as an established, yet mobile, home base for Vegan Vibes/Veganas Vibras, which will allow her to expand her menu. She also envisions a screen on the truck displaying information educating the public about the meat industry and the toll it takes on the environment and people’s health.

“Like I said, I want to feed bellies and feed brains.” •

Nació en la Ciudad de México y fue criada en Oakland.

Zepeda no es ajena a la experiencia inmigrante, pero con solo 26 años ha conseguido, en sus propias palabras, "lograrlo".

Zepeda es madre soltera de dos hijas pequeñas, empleada a tiempo completo en People Helping People, una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece asesoramiento financiero, educativo y de vivienda a personas estadounidenses de bajos ingresos, y es dueña de su propio negocio de alimentos: Vegan Vibes/Veganas Vibras, especializado en sabrosas recreaciones veganas de clásicos de la cocina mexicana. Desde principios de enero, Zepeda se ha asociado con 7 Stars Holistic Healing Center, un dispensario de cannabis en Richmond, para poner su negocio en su estacionamiento los viernes desde el mediodía hasta las 5 de la tarde.

Sus años de experiencia en el sistema sanitario estadounidense le han demostrado muchas veces lo devastadoras que pueden ser las facturas hospitalarias para la economía de una familia, y, como sus clientes son principalmente personas de color de bajos ingresos, también ha visto lo generalizados que estaban los hábitos alimentarios poco saludables en su propia comunidad.

"Sinceramente, eso fue lo más importante: quería empezar en donde me criaron. Quería comenzar en mi comunidad", dijo Zepeda. "Me pregunté, ¿por qué vamos a cada esquina y tenemos el mismo tipo de camión de tacos y no una opción vegana?".

En muchos hogares étnicos, donde la comida es parte de la cultura, el veganismo tiende a pasarse por alto y a despreciarse como poco más que una moda cara, pero Zepeda está decidida a cambiar esa idea equivocada.

"Cuando empecé, mis padres no estaban del todo de acuerdo porque son latinos, hispanos, hispanos normales preguntando: “¿Cómo me vas a dar un taco sin carne?".

Pero después de cuatro años de Vegan Vibes, Zepeda continúa alimentando personas. Su negocio ha crecido lo suficiente como para contratar a su primer empleado a tiempo completo, su padre, que ha adoptado la dieta vegana con los brazos abiertos.

Para beber, Zepeda ofrece varias opciones de aguas frescas, a las que dedica mucho tiempo y esfuerzo. Su horchata vegana requiere moler un surtido de frutos secos y avena, y luego colarlo todo a mano para hacer su propio sustituto de la leche. Su bebida más vendida aún no tiene nombre. Richmond Extends Keller Beach Sanitary Sewer Moratorium

ver the past decade, Keller Beach has had a dangerous level of contaminants in its water numerous times when inspected.

A pipe failure in the Keller Beach Sanitary Sewer would make this issue even worse.

Richmond City Council voted Feb. 21 to stop issuing building permits that require new sewer connections to the Keller Beach Sanitary Sewer for 45 days. On Tuesday, the city of Richmond’s Water Resource Recovery project manager Mary Phelps asked for that moratorium to be extended for another 22 months.

“In order to prevent additional stress and conditions exacerbating on this line, we are requesting that the council continue to hold this moratorium,” Phelps said.

She also said that if the moratorium ends, “it could exacerbate and cause catastrophic events on the Keller Beach line.”

According to the city of Richmond’s website, “current conditions indicate pipe failure is an imminent possibility that would be exacerbated by additional connections.”

This sewer was constructed in 1959 and is over 5,000 feet long.

Earlier in the night, council member Cesar Zepeda said that around 100 residents had attended a meeting Monday to discuss concerns about the Keller Beach Sanitary Sewer.

Zepeda said there will be more meetings for residents living near the sewer to discuss their concerns. While

extending this moratorium was part of a public hearing, no one spoke in opposition to its extension.

Phelps also said there would be exceptions for adding some developments to the Keller Beach Sanitary Sewer, but there would be a process in place for determining this.

“We are working with the engineering department for conditions for each development that has building permits in process and future developments,” Phelps said.

The Richmond City Council voted 6-0 to extend the moratorium, with Vice Mayor Gayle McLaughlin absent.

Honoring Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr City Council issued a proclamation recognizing Ramadan, which lasted from March 22 to April 20 this year, and Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. During Ramadan, many Muslim people fast from sunrise to

sunset, not consuming any food or water.

There are several mosques in Richmond, including the Islamic Society Of West Contra Costa County, Masjid AlNoor and the Muslim Mission Center.

“The thing about Ramadan, that is very special to all of us, is to know that when we pray, there are … people praying the exact same time as you,” said a Muslim community member, who did not share their name before speaking. “Something very spiritually awakening that is hard to explain.”

Mayor Eduardo Martinez, after being invited, said he would check with his staff to see when he could join evening prayers and then the breaking of the fast.

“Every cultural group, every individual, is what makes Richmond, rich,” Martinez said after the proclamation was given. •

he De Anza High Dons beat the Salesian College Preparatory High Pride 3-1 at home April 15.

Pitcher Daniel Ponce led the Dons, throwing a complete game with three hits, one walk and one run on just 77 pitches. He came into the game with a team-best 0.30 earned run average.

“I credit all my success to the team,” Ponce said. “They always pick me up when I’m down and tell me when I’m doing well.”

Despite the win, neither De Anza players nor coaches were satisfied with their showing.

“We didn’t execute, we didn’t hustle, and we didn’t keep our heads in the game,” said Dons head coach Brandon Fredzess.

It had been 10 days since De Anza won a game, winless in its last three, but getting off the schneid did not distract the team from its shortcomings.

“It was a lackadaisical performance on everyone’s part,” said Dons junior catcher Alex Turner. “Our pitching was amazing, though. [Ponce] did exactly what we needed him to do.”

The schools, separated by just four miles, entered the non-league game evenly matched, both with winning records, but Ponce set the tone early by setting down the first six batters he faced.

Dons junior shortstop and UC Berkeley commit Nikko Taylor roped a ball over the Pride left fielder in the first inning for the game’s only triple but was left stranded.

Taylor leads his team in three-baggers, now with four on the season.

De Anza High first baseman David Fernandez extended his team lead in doubles to six in the second frame.

Following a balk that got him to third base, Fernandez raced home on a ground ball for the first run.

The Pride quickly responded with backto-back hard hit balls to even the score, but managed only two more baserunners for the game’s entirety.

In the bottom of the third, tempers flared when batter’s interference was called on the Dons.

Instead of having a runner on second base with no outs, the Dons had a runner on first with one out and failed to score.

Ponce again sat down six straight Pride batters in the fourth and fifth frames to keep the game tied while De Anza’s offense stalled.

“We definitely need to focus more at the plate during our at-bats,” said Turner.

The Dons were aggressive on offense, swinging early in counts and drawing no walks.

“You don’t go up to bat looking for walks, and I think we sat on balls we should have,” said Fredzess.

With only one strikeout as a team, De Anza High was kept at bay by flying out to Pride outfielders on 10 occasions, including a diving catch in center field.

Visual COVID Disinformation Is Uniquely Harmful, Expert Says

A

fter the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed during a nationally televised Monday Night Football game in January, people took to social media to speculate what happened, posting footage from the field with claims blaming the COVID vaccine. That Hamlin’s vaccination status was not public knowledge did not matter.

Visual COVID disinformation like this manages to be nearly ubiquitous and fly under the radar.

“Visual content is particularly powerful in its reach,” said Kathryn Heley, lead author of “Missing the Bigger Picture: The Need for More Research on Visual Health Information.”

We’re more likely to pay attention to, understand and remember visuals than text alone, she added.

“Compared to written content alone, the addition of visual content enhances emotional arousal and … persuasive impact,” Heley said.

Visual disinformation may be recontextualized, manipulated or fabricated, according to the Journalist’s Resource, meaning an image may be fake or taken out of context.

The posts about Hamlin are recontextualized disinformation. The clips used were actual footage, and he really did suffer a medical emergency. But the claims it resulted from the COVID-19 vaccine were unfounded.

After Hamlin dropped, “we saw an increase … in social media postings about how this condition was caused by the vaccine, and no one knows his vaccine status,” said Multiethnic Press Secretary Yurina Melara Valiulis of the California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research.

“It’s clearly misinformation with maybe a tone of malinformation, the kind of information that is malicious.”

Manipulated visuals have been altered to influence how people interpret them.

Journalist Tamoa Calzadilla mentioned a doctored photo of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the words “Center for Global Human Population Reduction” added.

A fabricated visual is made up, often “with representations of people, events, or things that make it appear as authentic, legitimate information,” writes Naseem S. Miller in the Journalist’s Resource.

An example of this is a “deepfake,” a video of someone saying something they never did. The audio may be electronically invented or spliced together from actual recordings, then synced with footage of the person.

“Visual manipulations can be hard to detect — they are often imperceptible and easily overlooked,” Heley said.

Deepfakes can look realistic, but there are signs, according to Norton Security, such as the speaker not moving naturally or facial expressions that don’t look right. If something seems wrong, there is a good chance it is wrong.

Videos can also be manipulated to trick people in multiple languages.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said last May that his company had set a goal in 2019 “that by 2023 we would reduce the number of people in the world who cannot afford our medicines by 50%." Then, a video circulated that eliminated the crucial phrase “who cannot afford our medicines.”

It was disseminated with Spanish subtitles that reflected the falsified speech.

“This is a common kind of mis- and disinformation targeted at Latino communities in the U.S.,” said Calzadilla, managing editor of Factchequeado, a factchecking website focused on Spanish-language media.

She said Latinx people are deceived intentionally for political, economic and ideological reasons.

“Latinos and Latinas inform themselves through platforms such as YouTube, WhatsApp and other social media networks, which represents a problematic situation because of a lot of mis- and disinformation circulates there,” she said.

Many young people also fall prey to disinformation on social media.

“While the young tend to be more comfortable online than older people, that hasn’t inoculated them against the spread of false claims,” Time magazine reported in 2021.

“In fact, some studies have shown they seem even more prone to believe misinformation about the pandemic.”

Fact-checker PolitiFact NC analyzed two videos in which women shook significantly and blamed it on the COVID vaccines.

“Public health officials and vaccine experts told PolitiFact they are not aware of any link between either COVID-19 vaccine and uncontrollable shaking,” the report said.

Those women apparently were not joking, but parody posts exist in which someone writes in a mock-serious tone, expressing concern for themselves or a loved one who has supposedly lost control of their body.

Sometimes, the joke is obvious. One post is accompanied by a GIF of Jim Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas dancing goofily in “Dumb and Dumber.” Another is ambiguous — until the person starts doing the robot.

“Most of the scenarios are clearly fictional,” writes Sophia Ankel about TikTokers pretending to have bad experiences with COVID vaccines. “But they embrace tropes from real-world anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, and … help normalize the idea that vaccines are dangerous.”

npaid caregiving work across the United States is valued around $600 billion. In the state of California alone, there are around 4.4 million family caregivers, according to a recent estimate from AARP’s Public Policy Institute.

“Family caregivers do their work quietly with little recognition,” said Nancy LeaMond, an AARP vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer, “and as healthcare increasingly takes place in people’s homes, they are taking on more and more complicated responsibilities.”

At a March 8 virtual roundtable hosted by the organization, people from AARP discussed the findings of its report “Valuing the Invaluable 2023 Update: Strengthening Supports for Family Caregivers.” One of the issues raised at the roundtable is the need for creating culturally competent care solutions that support family caregivers from diverse backgrounds.

“Forty percent of family caregivers come from multicultural communities, and we really have to understand more about their distinct cultural values and needs so that we can address them better,” said Susan Reinhard, an AARP vice president and director of its Public Policy Institute.

Rita Choula, director of caregiving at AARP Public Policy Institute, said AARP is doing research into caregivers of color in three states — New York, Georgia, and Illinois — to see how they can better be supported.

“We are looking specifically at racially and ethnically diverse communities and really talking to those caregivers,” said Choula, adding that AARP should have more information on this to share later in the year.

Science Fiction Writers Describe Shifts In Sci-Fi

he genre of science fiction is undergoing several shifts — one of which is dealing directly and more dramatically with tales about the world’s problems. And the genre also has a growing group of more diverse writers, a panel of scifi writers and experts said recently.

The panel “Sci-Fi Writers Imagine Alternative Realities and Futures” was organized and presented March 24 by Ethnic Media Services.

Ericka Hoagland a professor of creative writing at Stephen F. Austin State University said issues like sea levels rising — a very much real-time, real-world problem — are coming to the forefront of science fiction writing.

She talked at length about one sea level story in which one of the characters learned to communicate directly with a blue whale.

“This kind of story looks beyond the stereotype of space travel,” she said. “This story says to me we need to learn nature’s language and stop forcing nature to speak our language.”

Hoagland said that another major change in science fiction is that contributing writers are now increasingly diverse. “Science fiction is no longer a boys’ club,” she said.

The notion of increasing diversity in voices was echoed

by Libia Brenda, a climate imagination fellow at Arizona State University. She has been involved with projects in which science fiction writers collaborated on stories, greatly enhancing the final work. She cited one story that looks at a major volcanic eruption in Mexico due to climate change factors.

“There is a narrative arc that connects all the settings in which we are imagining how we are going to live after that,” Brenda said. Combining the work of the writers is admittedly “an experiment” she added. But she said her writing group is trying to imagine a world based on hope.

“We are trying to imagine a world that is the product of a change,” she said. “We are trying to go beyond the

obvious.”

Brenda also said she believes the idea of having science fiction writers teaming up is a great model.

“As writers, we need to be collaborative to survive,” she said.

Science fiction writer Ken Liu said he believes that science fiction is misnamed. “The vast majority of science fiction has almost nothing to do with science,” Liu said.

“The vast majority of science fiction is really fiction about technology. Tech-fi might be a better name for it.”

He explained science is usually considered a lofty, academic study, whereas technology is the simple application of scientific insights.

“But nothing could be further from the truth,” he said.

“Often, technology races way ahead of science. Technology is an art. It’s about the human attempt to make mental structures tangible.”

He said to understand human nature, it’s necessary to understand human technology.

“In the same way it is not possible to understand beavers without understanding their dams or honeybees without understanding beehives.”

Writer and bookstore owner Isis Asare of Oakland said she believes science fiction is particularly freeing for writers of color because there are no strict boundaries.

This allows authors to imagine and pursue outside the

bounds of other types of fiction.

“And for readers, it means you can reignite your imagination,” she said.

Asare also discussed Afrofuturism, a term coined in the late 1980s by a white journalist, which in part is a redefinition of Blackness, she said.

“My personal definition of Afrofuturism is the intersection of African diaspora culture and the merging of science and technology.”

Indian novelist and screenwriter Samit Basu of Delhi said he believes that science fiction needs to focus more on the multiple apocalypses we often face, not just focus on small individual problems. Dealing with the whole even in fiction is a more realistic approach to problem solving.

Looking at one problem at a time as a particular crisis arrives is not sufficient, he said.

“All over the world we are dealing essentially with the same problems,” Basu said. •

Ericka Hoagland, profesora de escritura creativa en la Universidad Estatal Stephen F. Austin, afirmó que cuestiones como el aumento del nivel del mar -un problema real en tiempo real- están pasando a primer plano en la literatura de ciencia ficción. Habló largo y tendido de una historia sobre el nivel del mar en la que uno de los personajes aprende a comunicarse directamente con una ballena azul.

"Este tipo de historias van más allá del estereotipo de los viajes espaciales. "Esta historia me dice que tenemos que aprender el lenguaje de la naturaleza y dejar de obligarla a hablar nuestro idioma".

Hoagland afirmó que otro cambio importante en la ciencia ficción es que los escritores que contribuyen a ella son ahora cada vez más diversos. "La ciencia ficción ya no es un club de chicos", afirmó.

Brenda también dijo que cree que la idea de que los escritores de ciencia ficción se unan es un gran modelo.

"Como escritores, necesitamos colaborar para sobrevivir", afirmó.

El escritor de ciencia ficción Ken Liu dijo que cree que la ciencia ficción está mal denominada. "La gran mayoría de la ciencia ficción no tiene casi nada que ver con la ciencia", dijo Liu. "La gran mayoría de la ciencia ficción es en realidad ficción sobre tecnología. Tech-fi podría ser un nombre más adecuado".

‘When Life Hits Like a Whip’:

Students Try to Deal With Mental Health Themselves But Want More Support Commentary • Various Authors

ditor’s note: We asked Kennedy students how they take care of their mental health and what schools and parents could do to increase mental wellness in teens. Their responses have been edited.

Dealing with mental health isn't easy. We all have our ways. I spend time with people I'm comfortable with.

Being around others I want to be around helps a lot.

Schools should give us areas where we could help each other. Not everyone will be comfortable with an adult, but they might be with a student their age.

— Diana Nguyen, 17 I talk about my feelings and find time for myself. Schools and parents can increase mental wellness in teens by doing research, then, try to help teens understand their mental health.

— Janet Madison, 16 My fear of death without having lived is bigger than my desire to kill myself. I focus on things that matter when life hits like a whip. I play my guitar, read books and keep breathing. There is no secret to deal with pain, but if you can endure the pain and walk away, you can get a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle. The thing about life is that when we lose the light and way to keep going, there is always a new and a better option. We need to have the courage to live rather than to kill ourselves. There are so many reasons to keep breathing.

— Bradley Cauich, 17 Schools and parents can increase mental health awareness by creating a safe, private space for students. Students should be able to share feelings, thoughts and emotions with somebody they trust. It shouldn't be shared with parents because the student could lose that trust and might not seek out help in fear the information will be shared. It would be nice if schools provided therapy.

— Lourdes Mendoza, 15

How I deal with depression and anxiety is I don't. It overcomes me, and I don't know what to do. I feel stuck.

I've been doing the best I have in a long time. Although I feel happy most of the time, there's still that part dragging me down. I had to go to therapy for anxiety and depression. It did help. My anxiety has lessened, but it becomes bad once I feel self-conscious. I've learnt to deal with it and not depend on anyone to make it go away because someone isn't always going to be with me.

Schools and parents can increase mental wellness in teens by putting it out there and believing whatever the teens say they feel. A lot of parents might not believe their kids, and schools don't really talk about it.

— Kayla Vidal, 15 I am dealing with it kind of bad but getting better. I have depression and other mental health issues, but it isn't that bad. I will be good in time. [Parents and teachers] can have small talks with [teens] more often.

— Eric Ronquillo, 16 Schools should have a place where students can go talk to people, like a wellness center. It's important to hire good people because if someone is too harsh, it could be hard for a student to open up. Parents could be more understanding. A lot of parents put pressure on their kids and don't understand how hard it is to meet their expectations. Parents should educate themselves more on mental health issues and talk to their children about their mental health.

— Iyana Lopez, 15 Schools can help increase mental wellness by helping

provide a safe environment. Parents can help by understanding how they may feel and giving supportive advice. Have regular check-ins and make sure everything is OK. Let them know they are there for them.

— Asia Belcher, 15 My depression has gotten really bad, and let's not talk about my anxiety. I have been feeling sad. I feel like crying most of the time out of nowhere.

Parents don't understand what teens go through. To them, we are just going through phases. Parents don't listen to their kids about how they feel. Parents focus on grades and bad stuff, but where's the support when we do good stuff? Parents should focus more on our wellbeing and pay attention to us because when we grow up they're going to wish they had more time with us, and we are going to want to be the parents we wished we had.

— Mariana Zavala, 17 My mental state is like a revolving door. One second, I feel like being productive, and the next second, I come crashing down with my mind filled with past failures and cringey activities.

I feel insignificant compared to my older brothers, who've done extracurriculars and sports and are outgoing and sharp-minded. They've spent high school working and socializing.

I got an internship at a restaurant and I told my [oldest] brother excitedly. He [said] it was dumb to get an internship there and asked why I was doing it.

I landed another internship — at Kaiser! — to see whether I wanted a health career. When I [told] my older brother, he belittles me. Maybe if my brother weren’t Continued on pg. 14

Cómo me enfrento a la depresión y la ansiedad es que no lo hago. Me supera y no sé qué hacer. Me siento estancada.

Eh estado lo mejor que he podido en mucho tiempo.

Aunque me siento feliz la mayor parte del tiempo, todavía queda esa parte que me afecta. Tuve que ir a terapia por ansiedad y depresión. Me ayudó. Mi ansiedad ha disminuido, pero se vuelve mala cuando me siento cohibida. He aprendido a afrontarla y a no depender de nadie para que desaparezca, porque no siempre va a haber alguien conmigo.

Las escuelas y los padres pueden aumentar el bienestar mental de los adolescentes exponiéndolo y creyendo lo que los adolescentes digan que sienten. Muchos padres pueden no creerles a sus hijos, y las escuelas no hablan realmente de ello.

Para ellos solo pasamos por fases. Los padres no escuchan a sus hijos sobre cómo se sienten. Los padres se enfocan en las calificaciones y en las cosas malas, pero ¿dónde está el apoyo cuando hacemos cosas buenas? Los padres deberían enfocarse más en nuestro bienestar y prestarnos atención, porque cuando crezcamos van a desear tener más tiempo con nosotros, y nosotros vamos a querer ser los padres que desearíamos haber tenido.

Their Cultures are Different.

Their Values are Not

T

heir differences are many: He is from Taiwan, the son of Chinese refugees who fled Mao Zedong’s Communist China. She is from Puerto Rico, living in Los Angeles, where she made a career as a television journalist and, later, a psychologist.

Nancy and Michael met in 2014, when his company took over a day care program for adults with disabilities that she directed in Santa Clarita. She left the company shortly thereafter, but they had started dating after he offered to take her to a doctor’s appointment.

“I thought that was weird,” she said, but agreed.

Nine years later, they are still together. “Our cultures are very different,” Nancy says. “But we are partners — he is the one for me.”

Michael is more reserved, less outgoing, less talkative.

Nancy is outgoing, loves music and dancing and tends to kiss and hug people “even if I don’t know them,” she says, something Michael is not accustomed to.

For Michael, Nancy was just “easy to like.” She had empathy.

For Nancy, Michael was the opposite of the “macho” culture that she fled when she left Puerto Rico. “He has respect for women.”

“The male chauvinist culture — I couldn’t take it,” Nancy says. Michael adds: “I don’t even know what that is.”

But Nancy really saw what Michael was made of when she was diagnosed with cancer back in June of 2018.

“That’s when I truly saw him, like I had never seen another human being before in terms of his support for me, his undying support,” she says. “He was there for every single chemotherapy session, he slept with me in the hospital room by my bed. I got extremely ill, and he would clean me. I spent almost a year in bed, screaming from the severe pain every day. He offered unwavering support through hell, making everything easier.”

Michael waves this off.

“It wasn’t so bad for me,” he says. “I enjoyed the hospital food and everything.”

Five years later, Nancy is close to being declared in remission and their relationship is as strong as ever. They share a passion for travel, and he has accompanied her to Puerto Rico. But, watching Latino television and visiting the island, Michael saw things that puzzled him greatly.

“The sexualization of young girls, the obvious exploitation of women — and men — that made me uncomfortable for sure,” he says. “Chinese tend to be much more reserved.”

Michael also did not understand what he describes as the cavalier attitude of many Latino men, and the examples he saw of Latina women marrying more than once, with children from different husbands.

“He doesn’t understand that’s completely normal,” Nancy says. “I would explain it to him, my sister had a husband, he left her, so she was alone with a baby, and then, she had a second husband. He was like, no, that’s not possible.”

Michael sees the whole thing as unreal. “Like a Spanish novela,” he chuckles. “It’s so strange to me that society acquiesces to this kind of male behavior.”

For Nancy, Michael’s culture is completely fascinating.

“They appreciate art from a completely different perspective. His mom is an artist, she can do calligraphy in Chinese, she knows Chinese opera. For me, it’s like salsa and merengue,” she laughs.

At first, Nancy’s family was skeptical about Michael.

“Un chino… they would say, what is he about, what does he eat?”

However, Nancy says she learns something new from Michael every day. “They speak Mandarin Chinese, a very rich language, and everything is based on stories. It’s poetic, so he is always making analogies with these stories about things that happen to me. It enriches my life.”

Nancy and Michael have also seen the ugliness of antiAsian hate that has endured in some corners of the United States for centuries.

“We were having dinner in Turlock, a small town in Stanislaus County,” Nancy says. “We went out of the restaurant and these two Anglo guys come at us and say, ‘What is this f—— Chinese doing here?’ We just left as fast as we could.”

Having overcome the worst of her illness, Michael and Nancy recently opened a business together. It’s an adult health care center, much like the one they met in.

Both think they will be together for the rest of their lives. Nancy is 58, and Michael is 52.

“We are together like one person,” Nancy says. “But we respect our differences.”

ienen muchas diferencias: él es de Taiwán, hijo de refugiados chinos que huyeron de la China comunista de Mao Zedong. Ella es de Puerto Rico, vive en Los Ángeles, donde estudió la carrera de periodista de televisión y, posteriormente, psicología.

Nancy y Michael se conocieron en el año 2014, cuando la empresa de él se hizo cargo de un programa de atención para adultos con discapacidad que ella dirigía en Santa Clarita. Ella dejó la empresa poco después, pero habían empezado a salir después de que él se ofreciera a llevarla a una cita médica.

"Me pareció extraño", dijo ella, pero aceptó.

Nueve años después, siguen juntos. "Nuestras culturas son muy diferentes", dice Nancy. "Pero somos compañeros: él es el indicado para mí".

Michael es más reservado, menos extrovertido, poco hablador. Nancy es extrovertida, le encanta la música y bailar, y tiende a besar y abrazar a la gente "aunque no la conozca", dice, algo a lo que Michael no está acostumbrado.

Para Michael, Nancy era simplemente "fácil de querer".

Tenía empatía.

Para Nancy, Michael era lo opuesto a la cultura "machista" de la que ella huyó cuando se fue de Puerto Rico. " Él respeta a las mujeres".

"No soportaba la cultura machista", dice Nancy.

Michael añade: "No sé ni lo que es eso".

Pero Nancy vio realmente cómo era Michael cuando le diagnosticaron cáncer, en junio de 2018.

"Fue entonces cuando realmente lo vi, como nunca antes había visto a otro ser humano por su apoyo hacia mí, su apoyo incondicional", afirma. "Estuvo en todas las sesiones de quimioterapia, durmió conmigo en la

habitación del hospital junto a mi cama. Me encontraba muy enferma y él me limpiaba. Pasé casi un año en cama, gritando cada día por el intenso dolor. Me ofreció un apoyo inquebrantable durante ese infierno, haciéndolo todo más fácil".

Michael lo omite.

"Para mí no fue tan malo", dice. "Disfruté de la comida del hospital y todo".

Cinco años después, Nancy está a un paso de ser declarada en remisión y su relación es tan sólida como siempre. Comparten la pasión por los viajes, y él la ha acompañado a Puerto Rico. Pero, viendo la televisión latina y visitando la isla, Michael vio cosas que lo desconcertaron.

"La sexualización de las jóvenes, la evidente explotación de las mujeres (y de los hombres), me incomodaron sin duda", dice. " Las personas chinas tienden a ser mucho más reservadas".

Michael tampoco entendía lo que describe como una actitud despreocupada de muchos hombres latinos, y los ejemplos que vio de mujeres latinas que se casaban más de una vez, teniendo hijos de distintos maridos.

"No entiende que eso es completamente normal", dice Nancy. "Yo se lo explicaba: mi hermana tenía un marido, él la dejó, así que se quedó sola con un bebé y después tuvo un segundo marido. Él decía: no, eso no es posible".

Michael lo ve todo irreal. "Como una novela española", se ríe. "Me resulta tan extraño que la sociedad apruebe este tipo de comportamiento masculino".

Para Nancy, la cultura de Michael es absolutamente fascinante. "Aprecian el arte desde una perspectiva completamente diferente. Su madre es artista, sabe hacer caligrafía en chino, conoce la ópera china. Para mí es

como la salsa y el merengue", ríe.

Al principio, la familia de Nancy se mostraba escéptica con Michael. "Un chino... decían, ¿cómo es, qué come?".

Sin embargo, Nancy dice que cada día aprende algo nuevo de Michael. "Habla chino mandarín, un idioma muy enriquecedor, y todo se basa en historias. Es poético, así que él siempre está haciendo analogías con estas historias sobre situaciones que me ocurren a mí. Enriquece mi vida".

Nancy y Michael también han sido testigos de la crueldad del odio antiasiático que ha perdurado en algunos rincones de Estados Unidos durante siglos.

"Estábamos cenando en Turlock, una pequeña ciudad del condado de Stanislaus", cuenta Nancy. "Salimos del restaurante y se nos acercaron dos anglosajones y nos dijeron: '¿Qué hace aquí este mald—— chino? Nos fuimos tan rápido como pudimos".

Tras superar lo peor de su enfermedad, Michael y Nancy han abierto recientemente un negocio juntos. Es un centro de salud para adultos, muy parecido a aquel en el que se conocieron.

Ambos consideran que estarán juntos por el resto de sus vidas. Nancy tiene 58 años y Michael 52.

"Estamos unidos como una sola persona", dice Nancy.

"Pero respetamos nuestras diferencias".

A report by Sgt. Josh Clark of the RPD’s Office of Professional Accountability said Ferraro used “unreasonable force” when he used a chokehold that appeared to restrict Lopez-Rodriguez’s breathing.

Police departments across the U.S., including RPD, have banned the chokehold, known as carotid control. The restriction of blood flow to the brain can render a person unconscious in seconds.

The DA's office found the use of force reasonable by all officers, dismissing the need for further action.

But controversy still surrounds the incident, particularly the attribution of death to excited delirium syndrome, a term that has been denounced by clinicians and medical boards.

The American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization do not recognize “excited delirium.” The APA says the term is disproportionately applied to men of color in police custody.

“Excited delirium never seems to occur except in instances when the police are involved and they’ve been manhandling, wrestling and using force against people,” Adanté Pointer, an Oakland-based civil rights attorney who specializes in police use of force cases, told the Mercury News.

On Dec. 23, 2022, 30-year-old Navy veteran Angelo Quinto died in Antioch Police custody. His death was attributed to “excited delirium” by forensic pathologist Ogan.

A private autopsy said that “excited delirium” was not the cause of Quinto’s death but asphyxiation and fentanyl.

“Any time I hear asphyxiation or every time I hear excited delirium in a case where there’s evidence of asphyxiation, then you know it’s going to be the asphyxiation,” said Ben Nisenbaum, an attorney representing Quinto’s family “To resort to excited delirium, when you have evidence — clear evidence — of asphyxiation is ridiculous,” continued Nisenbaum. “It’s a very frustrating thing to me.”

Dr. Michael Schwemm, head of emergency medicine at Mercy Hospital in Minnesota, says “excited delirium” is typically used when medical examiners fail to find a clear cause of death.

Upon hearing the story of LopezRodriguez, he said, “Most of the time, these kinds of deaths are due to asphyxiation.

From my perspective, it seems that his heart would have been fine were it not for the unnatural amount of restraint placed on his body.”

Standard protocol, according to the CCC DA, requires an inquest following a death that involved law enforcement. An inquest is only supposed to be skipped if all three parties (the DA, sheriff’s department and police department) agree it is unnecessary and law enforcement’s role was “obviously appropriate and non-controversial.” There was no unanimous agreement in this case.

Both the Richmond Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department say the other declined. Nevertheless, the inquest was still not done. •

“That doesn’t mean it isn’t out there,” Melara Valiulis said.

One problem is technology is not designed to pick it up.

“Existing content moderation tools are mostly designed to catch misinformation in texts and not images and videos, making it difficult to catch and stop the spread of visual misinformation,” writes Miller.

Another is the way social media sites work.

“If you click on something that is misinformation,” Melara Valiulis said, “the algorithm might … give you the same content and just send you in this hole, misinformation hole.”

That is why people should not engage with misinformation. Instead, Melara Valiulis said they should report it to the platform and can also report it to the state by emailing rumors@cdph.ca.gov.

WCCUSD Board Votes to Formally Recognize Indigenous Peoples Day

s Indigenous Peoples Day gets celebrated and honored more across the United States, members of the Pinole Valley High School speech and debate team wanted to make sure West Contra Costa Unified School District does the same.

“It's vital that we acknowledge the land that we stand on, as well as the rich and diverse culture that California sits on,” senior Elizabeth Duarte said. “California, it sits on stolen Indigenous land.”

The West Contra Costa Board of Education voted April 12 to recognize the first Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day. Tribes in Contra Costa County include the Miwok and Ohlone peoples.

The speech and debate team said that at least five other districts in the Bay Area, including San Francisco Unified School District, already have Indigenous Peoples Day on their calendar.

“The California Department of Education has recognized Indigenous Peoples Day as a school holiday,” junior Alyssa Keller said. “We as a diverse district should work toward cultural awareness, inclusion and acceptance.”

People with Indigenous heritage, among them the speech and debate team’s coach, Michele LamonsRaiford, spoke about the importance of honoring the lives and legacies of Indigenous people.

“Today is about honoring our Indigenous ancestors,” Lamons-Raiford said. “In that spirit, I call the name of

my great grandmother… my ancestors in the Cherokee Nation and all of our past and present native elders from all Indigenous tribes.”

Cherokee elder Mike Racoon Eyes Kinney, national vice chair for the United Urban Warrior Society, also addressed the board.

“In the 550 years of what we call (America), 125 million Native people have been killed either due to ethnic cleansing or racial genocide,” Kinney said. “The United States government and whom we call the Indian killer, President Andrew Jackson, introduced the gateways of America's history of racial and ethnic cleansing and genocide.”

Trustee Mister Phillips said the board needs to do more to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. “The issue, in my opinion, is that it is not celebrated the way that it should be,” Phillips said. “I do hope, with conversations with our labor partners, that this is and that it becomes a day that's actually recognized to be taken off.”

Whether or not Indigenous Peoples Day ends up being a day off, clerk Jamela Smith-Folds said that the academic calendar could include listing the name of this day.

“What I heard that Pinole Valley Speech and Debate wants to add, is that on our academic calendar, it doesn't say smoke day, it doesn't say Columbus Day, but it says Indigenous people Day,” Smith-Folds said.

Before the board voted on the resolution to recognize the day, Superintendent Kenneth “Chris” Hurst re-read it for clarification for what the board would actually be voting on.

“Henceforth recognizes the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day and command its observance to all members of the WCCUSD community,” he said.

The resolution passed 5-0, with Board President Demetrio Gonzalez-Hoy and student trustee Kaylee Barron absent. •

"La cuestión, en mi opinión, es que no se celebra como debería", dijo Phillips. "Espero, con conversaciones con nuestros socios laborales, que esto sea así y que se convierta en un día que realmente se reconozca como tal".

Independientemente de que el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas termine siendo un día no laboral, la administrativa Jamela Smith-Folds dijo que el calendario académico podría incluir una lista con el nombre de este día.

"Lo que he oído que Pinole Valley Speech and Debate quiere añadir, es que, en nuestro calendario académico, no diga día sin tabaco, no diga Día de Cristóbal Colón, sino que diga Día de los Pueblos Indígenas", dijo SmithFolds.
