Report 2021-2022

RMS FRIENDS AND FAMILIES...

This Annual Report celebrates those who have shown their unwavering support for our school. The 2021 2022 school year proved to be another year in which the resiliency and dedication of our staff, students, and families shone through both in times of challenge and celebration. As we navigated a consistently changing landscape of the pandemic, our community prevailed with empathy, grace, and strength.

Last year we were able to provide an authentic Montessori experience to more than 300 students, nurturing their natural curiosities, while honoring the diversity of our community and preparing our students to navigate life successfully and contribute to the world meaningfully. Your investment in Richmond Montessori School allows our faculty and staff to continue supporting and delivering our mission and values to all of our students, from our youngest of students in the Toddler program all the way to our oldest students in Middle School.

We, of course, must recognize those who selflessly volunteer and serve Richmond Montessori School. There are so many ways to make valued contributions to our school, from our Board of Trustees and the Richmond Montessori Parents Association to morning carpool and everything in between.

These volunteers help create an inclusive school culture and allow every member of our community to feel seen and supported.

As our enrollment grows, we grow as a community, continuing to spread the philosophy and guidance of Maria Montessori. The work of Dr. Montessori continues to inspire us in fulfilling our mission, and keeps us focused on our students every day.

Thank you for your overwhelming support. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by your generosity.

Sincerely yours,

RICHMOND MONTESSORI TEAM

ALL ABOUT THE ANNUAL FUND

With our mission of inspiring academic excellence and nurturing human potential, and our values of community, character, authenticity, respect and excellence, guiding our way, Richmond Montessori School provides an authentic Montessori education second to none in our region

We are committed to providing the highest caliber of learning possible This calls for resources above and beyond the normal scope of tuition, and our community’s support is critical. The money raised into the RMS Annual Fund made a vital difference in what was possible this school year

The RMS Annual Fund is the most essential fundraising effort of any school year and makes an impact on our students' daily lives. It gives RMS the ability to continue to respond to the highest needs of our students and faculty, always with the goal of providing the exceptional Montessori experience, for which RMS is known.

Over $170,000 was raised for the RMS Annual Fund, and all of those dollars went directly into projects and programs supporting our students and teachers. We provided additional funding for financial aid, the general endowment, building improvements, outdoor space upgrades, playground enhancements, professional development, specialty programming through our Visiting Scholars program, student health and wellness and much more This additional funding, which directly impacts our students and teachers, wouldn’t have been possible without the Annual Fund.

Pledges and gifts can be made to RMS during our fiscal year, which runs from July 1 June 30. Gifts to the Annual Fund are deductible to the full extent allowed by law

ENDOWMENTS

The RMS Board of Trustees has established several endowments The yield from the various endowments support programs and projects, while the principal, prudently managed, ensures a solid foundation for the future of the school

Endowments available for contributions include the Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund, the Wise Family Endowed Fund, the Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts, the Training Educators and More (TEAM) Endowment, the Capital Facility Endowment and the school’s general endowment fund

For donors wishing to make a gift to RMS to establish a named endowment, a $100,000 gift is required If, however, the purpose of the named endowment is scholarship, a new endowment may be created at a $50,000 minimum threshold

For gifts below these minimum values, Board approval will be required to create a new endowment In these situations, efforts will be made by the Advancement Office to direct the gift into an existing endowment prior to bringing any proposals to the Board of Trustees

Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund

The Della Mae Reese Jefferson Scholarship Fund (DMRJ) was established in 2003 in honor of the mother of former RMS teacher, coach and mentor, Felecia Jefferson Because Della Mae would often tell her children to “care about others,” the fund was created by an initial gift from Felecia and her siblings It was fully funded in 2008 Interest from the principal is awarded annually by the Financial Aid Team to current RMS students who have demonstrated financial need

Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts

The Martha Mabey Endowment for the Arts was established in 1996 to honor former three time Head of School, Dr. Martha Mabey, Emeritus. Part of this endowment fund includes a $500 scholarship that is awarded at graduation to a current RMS Middle School student for pursuit of visual, literary and performing arts study In addition, approximately 5% of this endowment fund is utilized each year towards the arts component of the RMS Visiting Scholars program

Training Educators and More (TEAM) Endowment

Established in 2004 through a major gift from RMS parents, Jim and Estelle Brodeur, this endowment funds professional development opportunities for RMS staff and faculty.

Capital Facility Endowment

Established in 2012 through a major gift from RMS grandparent Ben Humphreys, Sr , this fund will help to ensure the upkeep of our facilities

The Wise Family Endowment

Established in 2015 through a major gift from RMS parents, Marc and Laurel Wise, this endowment is to fund financial aid for students.

For more information on contributing to an established endowment fund or to learn more about creating a new one, please contact the Advancement Office at 804.741.0040 ext. 49.
