LOS ALACRANES DE RVA TONIGHT’S MUSICIANS

PREPARE TO JOURNEY to the nation of Mexico, the city of Havana, the mountains of Medellín, and the deserts of Texas and the American Southwest with musical group Los Alacranes de RVA. The band, whose music recalls the playful and eclectic soundtracks of Quentin Tarantino films, features Paulo Franco (guitar, vocals), Paul Pearce (lead guitar, vocals), Bryan Martin (bass, vocals), and Rob Lytle (drums, vocals). They’ve played venues throughout Virginia and the U.S. for several decades. In addition to Franco’s original music, Los Alacranes de RVA performs covers of artists like The Mavericks, Los Lobos, Cruzados, Tito and Tarantula, Alejandro Escovedo, and Chingon. The band even based their name on the Chingon song, “Alacrán Y Pistolero” (in Spanish, alacrán means scorpion and pistolero means gunfighter). Their English and Spanish-language songs recount thrilling stories of adventure, tragedy, and love both unrequited and true.

VANISHING ACT

CAN HUMANS HALT THE EXTINCTION CRISIS? When I look in the eyes of an animal deemed ‘the last one,’ I get a horrible, sinking feeling. It is epic in ways I don’t yet understand, and it is irreversible. The loss of a tiger or the loss of a sparrow — they are equally tragic. But just how do we convince anyone that saving the least among us — say, a tiny frog and the mountain stream it lives in — is absolutely necessary and urgent now? - Joel Sartore

THE EARTH IS FACING UNPRECEDENTED THREATS TO ITS BIODIVERSITY. More animal species teeter on the brink of extinction today than at any other point in history. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the threat of extinction now affects over 18,000 animal species. Scientists agree that the current extinction rate is hundreds, if not thousands of times higher than the natural baseline rate. They blame habitat loss, pollution, climate change, disease, and the introduction of nonnative species as the primary causes behind this exponential climb, which began near the onset of the Industrial Revolution. But some endangered species have found a lifeline — and a chance for survival — thanks to concerted research, education, advocacy, and conservation efforts. In 1973, the U.S. passed the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to protect and recover imperiled species and their habitats both domestic and abroad. The ESA, which enables collaborative actions among federal agencies, local governments, conservation organizations, and private citizens, has been credited for saving 99% of listed species from extinction. At present, the ESA still lists more than 1,300 species in the U.S. as either endangered or threatened.

41% of amphibians 37% of sharks and rays 26% of mammals 12% of birds ...are threatened with extinction.

Endangered in Virginia The Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus) is a subspecies of the Townsend’s big-eared bat, and is distinguished by its large, rabbit-like ears. It is primarily found in caves and abandoned mines within the Appalachian region of the eastern U.S. Due to loss of habitat and a vulnerability to the impacts of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that affects many bat species in North America, it is federally recognized as an endangered species. Local conservation groups are working with state and federal agencies to gate all major bat sites to reduce disturbances and protect the species.

These successes showcase the ESA’s immense and positive impact. Perhaps its best-known success story is that of the bald eagle, which was once on the verge of disappearing from Photos © Joel Sartore

>>

Endangered in Virginia the continental U.S. It has since made a remarkable recovery and increased its population in the lower 48 states from just a few hundred breeding pairs in the 1960s to over 10,000 pairs today, including many along the banks of the James River. Advocacy initiatives like the Photo Ark have significantly raised awareness and support for legislation like the ESA. Joel Sartore uses the power of photography to inspire people to protect at-risk species before it’s too late. His portraits highlight the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom while forging an emotional connection between people and the species he photographs.

The Roanoke logperch (Percina rex) is a bottom-dwelling darter fish found in the watersheds of Roanoke and Chowan, located in the southern region of the state. Over the past 100 years, newly built dams have obstructed the Roanoke logperch’s natural migratory pathways and impacted the habitat’s conditions and food supply. In 2014, a coal ash spill in the Dan River contaminated an additional 70 miles of the habitat. Biologists have begun efforts to reintroduce the Roanoke logperch to more livable sections of its native waters, with the hope that this will allow the species to thrive.

Sartore’s work has captured the attention of the public and renewed their sense of urgency for conservation. He has played a crucial role in inspiring individuals, organizations, and governments to protect endangered species.

Making a difference. We proudly support The Richmond Forum and this evening’s speaker, Joel Sartore, who portrays the beauty of the world through photography and inspires conservation efforts to save endangered species. troutman.com Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders LLP

RICHMOND BOARDS THE ARK TWO LOCAL ANIMALS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

IN AUGUST 2021, JOEL SARTORE VISITED THE METRO RICHMOND ZOO to photograph two species missing from the Photo Ark documentary project: the African clawless otter and the Canebrake rattlesnake. “We are one of the very few zoos in North America that has this species of otter,” said Taylor Andelin, a spokesperson for Metro Richmond Zoo. “Joel reached out to us and asked if he could come take photos. We were aware of his project and were excited to help.” After they arranged for Sartore to take photos of Max, their African clawless otter, the zoo provided Sartore with a full list of the species in their care. “He went through and saw that he had not yet taken a photo of the Canebrake rattlesnake, so he decided to photograph both while he was here,” Andelin said. Zoo staff worked with Max to condition him for safe transport between his exhibit and the education building where the photoshoot would take place. When the big day arrived, Max brought his even bigger personality to the shoot. “Otters are very curious and kind of mischievous. Max cooperated, but he was definitely energetic and liked to try to touch the camera.” By comparison, said Andelin, the snake was “super easy” to photograph. “The whole experience was great. Joel is such a nice guy, and it was really cool to see him work in his element. We feel so honored that our Max will be the face of his otter species in the Photo Ark for generations to come.” Both animals are still on exhibit at the Metro Richmond Zoo, along with over 2,000 animals representing 190 species worldwide. The zoo is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday year round. Their mission is to protect animals through conservation programs, as well as to inspire guests by providing upclose, educational encounters with the wild — quite similar, they believe, to the mission of the Photo Ark. Learn more about the zoo’s conservation efforts at metrorichmondzoo.com.

AFRICAN CLAWLESS OTTER Range: Africa

Status: Lower risk

AONYX CAPENSIS Weight: 25-35 lbs

Gestation: 2 months

The third-largest otter species in the world, the African clawless otter is found near permanent bodies of water in the savanna or lowland forests and spends most of its time swimming and playing. This species has incredible dexterity due to its absence of claws and the reduced webbing on its paws. Long, sensitive whiskers allow it to hunt in the murkiest of waters. The African clawless otter is often solitary, but it can be found in family groups when prey is abundant. Did you know? A group of swimming otters is called a raft.

CANEBRAKE RATTLESNAKE Range: Eastern United States

CROTALUS HORRIDUS

Status: Lower risk, protected in Virginia

Length: 3-5 ft

Canebrake rattlesnakes, which are called timber rattlesnakes beyond the coastal plain of the Southeast, are large, heavy-bodied snakes. They are venomous pit vipers, but are not aggressive unless provoked. This snake occurs in a wide variety of terrestrial habitats including lowland cane thickets, high areas around swamps and river floodplains, hardwood and pine forests, and rural habitats in farming regions. The Canebrake rattlesnake feeds only once or twice per year, preferring to eat gray squirrels. Did you know? These snakes are larger in Virginia and can grow to be six feet long!

SPECIAL PORTRAIT: TAAVI THE ORANGUTAN While Sartore was visiting the Metro Richmond Zoo, the staff asked if he could take photos of Taavi, a five-month-old orangutan who holds a special place in their hearts. Zoo staff intervened to give Taavi the nutrition he needed after he was neglected at birth by his mother. They then made several attempts to reintroduce Taavi to his mother, but were unsuccessful. To ensure his survival, the animal care team decided to raise him by hand. Taavi now receives behind-the-scenes care at the zoo and is not currently on exhibit.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST

THE NATIONAL SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENT IS COMING! IN NOVEMBER, we announced on the Forum stage that the National Speech & Debate Tournament is coming to Richmond in 2026! The following Monday, The Richmond Forum hosted a press conference in partnership with Richmond Region Tourism and the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA). Mayor Levar Stoney, Delegate Betsy Carr, regional county managers and superintendents, students from Meadowbrook High School and Richmond High School for the Arts, and several media outlets joined us to make the public announcement. We have set an ambitious goal to raise $2 million for speech & debate over the next three years. Our plan is to use these funds to start speech & debate teams at every public middle and high school in the region — ensuring they’re established in time to be eligible for the 2026 tournament — as well as to support a tourism event of this size. Visit richmondforum.org/2026 to find out how you can help us meet our goal.

ISABEL WILKERSON

AT THE RICHMOND FORUM NOVEMBER 18, 2023 THE MASS MOVEMENT OF SIX MILLION AFRICAN AMERICANS from the rural South to the urban North between 1915 and 1970 was a defining force in American history. However, it is a chapter that often goes unacknowledged. Over the course of 15 years, author Isabel Wilkerson interviewed thousands of individuals across the country to bring to light the collective history and personal stories of this movement in her book “The Warmth of Other Suns.” Wilkerson shared this history at The Richmond Forum in “The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration.” As she sees it, most Americans have not had the opportunity to know their country’s true and full history, so she has made it her mission to use the powers of language and narrative to change how people see each other and the world. “Black Americans were excluded from the American dream,” Wilkerson told the Forum audience. She explained that in the early-tomid 20th century, “African Americans had to act like immigrants in order to be recognized as citizens.” Oppressive Jim Crow laws and threats of violence, paired with limited access to education and employment, caused Black Southerners to leave behind their homes and communities in order to seek a better life in other regions of the U.S. Wilkerson said that “Every single family had to at least consider the question, ‘Should we go, or should we stay?’ “It was the first time in our country’s history that the lowest-caste people actually had the chance to choose for themselves what they would do with their God-given talents, and where they would pursue them.” In this pursuit, those who participated in the Great Migration not only changed the course of their own lives but also the lives of their descendants.

“In everything that I do, I think about my ancestors,” said Wilkerson. “It was against the law for them to learn to read and write, and here I stand before you as a Pulitzer Prize winner.” Wilkerson’s parents were born in the South and moved to Washington, D.C. as young adults. She mentioned notable public figures who were also “children of the Great Migration,” including writer Toni Morrison, Olympian Jesse Owens, actor Denzel Washington, and music producer Berry Gordy. If their parents had not made the decision to leave, Wilkerson believes these talented individuals might not have been awarded the same opportunities to pursue their passions and excel in their respective fields. She emphasized that while there are notable figures in this chapter of history, the Great Migration was a leaderless movement. “That’s where the power of it comes from,” Wilkerson said. “There are leaders and heroes in every one of our families.” She closed her speech by inviting the audience to think of the potentially unknown heroes in their own family lineage. “We are all the product of some form of migration,” she asserted. “I want you to imagine a young person at a dock about to board a ship that’s going to cross the Atlantic, or loading up a truck that’s going to cross the Rio Grande, or standing at a railroad platform about to cross from the rural countryside to the big city. “I’m convinced that the people in our backgrounds who made that heartbreaking sacrifice [to leave behind the people who raised them] did not make those decisions so that their descendants would be at war with one another,” Wilkerson continued. “I think they went with all the hope and dreams and faith that life might be better for both themselves and their descendants.”

LIZ CHENEY PRINCIPLES OVER POLITICS Former U.S. Representative, attorney, and author Liz Cheney is at the fulcrum of our nation’s political divide. She will join us to discuss policy, principled leadership, and the future of bipartisanship. Displaying courage, discipline, and integrity in the wake of a national crisis, Cheney’s actions during her last term in Congress laid bare her commitment to country and democracy over politics—and they pose new questions about the future of the American two-party system. How can we encourage more politicians to work across the aisle? Where is the Republican party headed next? Hear Cheney tell the stories of how she arrived at her personal convictions, her remarkable career in Congress, and the road that lies ahead. (Format: Speech with Q&A)
