Science shows that where we live—not education, marital status, or wealth—is the most significant controllable factor in determining our happiness. Working with Gallup, the World Values Survey, and the World Database of Happiness, tonight’s speaker has researched happiness hot spots around the globe—places where people report having the highest level of well-being or happiness—and identified their common denominators. Tonight, Dan Buettner, an internationally recognized researcher, explorer, New York Times best-selling author, and National Geographic Fellow, will share his findings and reveal what governments, companies, communities and individuals can do to stack the deck to maximize happiness. Buettner’s work focuses on three goals: identifying locations—or Blue Zones® —where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives; discovering the keys to personal happiness; and creating healthy cities and workplaces by incorporating these discoveries. His objective is to blend his unique lifestyle

formula with the latest scientific findings to inspire easy, lasting change so each of us can gain more life in our years, and more years in our lives. In 2009, Dan Buettner partnered with AARP to apply Blue Zone principles to Albert Lea, Minnesota. His work there successfully raised the life expectancy of the city’s residents, while lowering their health care costs by more than 40 percent. He’s currently working with Healthways, to implement Blue Zone programs in the Beach Cities of Los Angeles (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach) and throughout the entire state of Iowa. Their strategy focuses on optimizing the health environment instead of changing individual behavior. Writing in Newsweek, Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health called the results “stunning.” Buettner’s National Geographic cover story, “The Secrets of Living Longer,” was one of the top-selling issues of all time and made him a finalist for a National Magazine Award. His New York Times Sunday Magazine article, “The Island Where People Forget to Die,” was the newspaper’s second-most popular article of 2012. His books, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, and Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way, have appeared on many best seller lists and were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Buettner’s work has been widely profiled on NPR, CNN, Fox News, ABC’s Good Morning America, and elsewhere. He has received an Emmy for television production and also holds three world records in distance cycling, having biked thousands of miles across six continents.

Only 17, she’s already beaten cancer twice with help from the experts at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and the VCU Massey Cancer Center. Older adults represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are rapidly entering their retirement years. By 2030, the number of people in our region age 65 and over will double, and those age 85 and over will more than triple. The number of adults age 60 and over will outnumber school-aged children for the first time in history. Over one quarter of a million people in our region will be older adults by the year 2030. This demographic shift, known as the Age Wave, signals unprecedented change in our community. Did you know that the Richmond Region has an Age Wave Readiness Plan? Richmond Forum Scholars Richmond Forum Scholars: Nikhith Kalkunte, Elise Fuller, Ben Moore, Syeda Haider, and Owen Ayers.

Engaging students in our programs has always been an important aspect of fulfilling the mission of The Richmond Forum. This season, 60 students are participating in our Page program, seating patrons and collecting questions during intermission. Another 300 students will attend our sold-out programs in our Student Viewing Room, where they will also have the unique opportunity to interact directly with our speakers. We are continually looking for new ways to include students from the region’s public and private schools in Forum evenings. In a new program launched this season, five of the region’s highest achieving and most impressive high school juniors have been selected to serve as Richmond Forum Scholars. Students from around the region submitted applications, essays, and letters of recommendation, hoping to be selected for this honor. All of the applicants were remarkable in their academic standing and impressive extra-curricular activities. Twelve students were chosen for personal interviews,

and five outstanding students were ultimately selected as our 2013-2014 Richmond Forum Scholars: Owen Ayers – Trinity Episcopal School Elise Fuller – St. Catherine’s School Syeda Haider – Thomas Jefferson High School Nikhith Kalkunte – Midlothian High School Ben Moore – St. Christopher’s School Beginning at the November program, the Scholars worked closely with Forum staff to ensure a well-run program by serving in important roles behind the scenes. Their responsibilities include checking in guests at our sponsor receptions, escorting speakers and moderators throughout the evening, introducing speakers in our Student Viewing Room, acting as runners backstage, and helping our photo lines run efficiently. Congratulations to the new Richmond Forum Scholars. We’re happy to have you on our team this season!

Tom McInerney, President & CEO, Genworth Financial, the Lead Patron for the evening, greeted the three speakers at the reception.

Karen Romer greets Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf as her husband, Rabbi Ben Romer, and the Reverend Bill Sachs look on.

One of the very best forums. Thank you to everyone who planned and delivered three outstanding speakers who gave us much to consider. Subscriber survey comment

Maajid Nawaz, a former Islamic extremist, delivers his opening statement.

We hear so many biases in the media. It was good to hear first hand from persons who are of Muslim descent. It was quite personal to each of the panelists, which made it even more inspirational and thought provoking. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Muslim and widely read critic of Islam, reacts as Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf makes a point.
