The moderator of tonight’s discussion with Smokey Robinson is Daphne Maxwell Reid. She is the co-founder, with her husband, actor/writer/producer Tim Reid, of New Millennium Studios, located near Petersburg and the first full-service film studio in Virginia. Well-known to television audiences, she played Aunt Viv on NBC’s hit comedy, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and mortician/embalmer Hannah Griffin on the CBS comedy series Frank’s Place. She has had regular roles on such shows as Snoops for CBS, Linc’s on Showtime, and Eve on UPN. She has hosted many television specials, co-hosted a talk show with her husband, and acted in several feature films. Born in New York City in 1948, Reid majored in interior design and architecture at

Northwestern University in Chicago. While at Northwestern, she was signed as a model by the Eileen Ford Agency in New York and was the first African-American woman to be on the cover of Glamour magazine. Her love of designing and making her own clothes led in 1992 to a co-venture with McCall Pattern Company and a continuing line of patterns called the “Daphne Maxwell Reid Collection.” Her video/pattern kit Suddenly You’re Sewing has been a major seller on QVC TV. As acting chief operating officer of New Millennium Studios, Reid handles finances and business affairs for the studio and several subsidiaries. She is actively involved in community affairs and serves on the boards of the Petersburg Library Foundation, theVirginia Commonwealth University Foundation, and the Board of Visitors of Virginia State University.
