letter from the e xecutive director

letter from the

Executive Director Eight months ago, one of the first things I did upon my arrival at The Richmond Forum was to start reviewing the hundreds of speaker suggestions submitted by subscribers last season. Then after the Tony Blair program we asked for your suggestions again in our program book and online survey, and we received over 700 more suggestions. We received almost that many again after the program last month. It’s been very interesting to see how the suggestions have changed as the world around us has changed. The speakers and topics being requested now are very different from the ones requested during last season. The gravitas of our times is coming through loud and clear. In addition, some brand new names entered the mix in recent months. It’s also been interesting to review the comments that often accompany the suggestions. A number of you specifically appealed for more substantive programs and less “Hollywood.” Others didn’t use the opportunity to tell us who they wanted to see, but rather who they definitely did not want to see. Every request for “Anybody but Clinton” was offset by a write-in vote for “Not Bush.” With the help of The Forum staff and the members of our Board’s Program Committee, we tallied, reviewed, and considered every suggestion and tonight, after intermission, I am excited to be announcing the five programs of the 2009-2010 Richmond Forum season. I believe that next season will deliver both substance and personality, with each program giving us something to think about in the days and weeks after we’ve left the theater. The speakers I

will announce tonight range from someone who has worked to effect change in the world with all eyes upon her to an ordinary man who has been busy changing the world by himself while nobody was watching. Our speakers will provide us with a different perspective on the places where headlines are being made right now, as well as places our minds can’t even imagine. We’ll be asked to look at others differently and we’ll be forced to look at ourselves differently, as well. We’ll find affirmation for some of our views, and perhaps reason to loosen our grip on others. We’ll have the opportunity to ask our questions, and the answers will give us plenty to think and talk about. I look forward to hearing your reactions tonight as I announce our speakers for next season, a fantastic season built on your suggestions. We thank you for being such passionate participants in the process! Watch your mailbox this week for your subscription renewal packet. If you’re not currently a subscriber, subscriptions will go on sale to the general public beginning May 1st. Please call our office to make sure you’re on our mailing list. Meanwhile, please enjoy tonight’s program with Motown legend Smokey Robinson. Bill Chapman bill@richmondforum.org

Tonight’s Patron For 146 years, Davenport has maintained the values and entrepreneurial spirit that characterized the firm originally founded in Richmond, Virginia by two business partners, Isaac Davenport, Jr. and Charles E.Wortham. Professionals of high integrity, they built a special kind of investment firm that has prevailed while others, large and small, have failed or merged in order to survive. Throughout the years, Davenport has helped its clients navigate the cataclysmic events of their day, beginning with the civil strife present at its founding in 1863 and continuing through every major world event, including the current economic turmoil which even today eludes a single definition. In 1921, Coleman Wortham, Sr., a greatnephew of the founder, became president of the firm and purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. The firm maintained its seat until 2007 when the Exchange merged with the fully electronic exchange, Euronextsm. Today, Davenport & Company employs over 430 people at its Richmond headquarters and 14 retail branch locations. Davenport continues to uphold its solid reputation for attention to detail and personal service. The firm runs a robust organization that includes services in Corporate and Public Finance, Fixed Income, Investment Advisory, Institutional Sales, and personal wealth management.

Davenport is owned by its employees, and is the oldest independent securities brokerage firm headquartered in Virginia. As one of the oldest financial services firms in America, Davenport & Company prides itself on its non-bank affiliated organization that serves thousands of investors nationwide. A member of the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FINRA), SIPC, the New York Stock Exchange, and an associate member of the American Stock Exchange, Davenport continues to operate from its headquarters in Richmond and focuses on the individual investor’s need for a financial services firm that provides a wide range of brokerage and advisory services based on an unwavering focus of personal attention and service.

He has been called the “King of Motown” and “America’s poet laureate of love.” Bob Dylan famously dubbed him “America’s greatest living poet.” His high, warm tenor inhabits a space all its own. Singer/songwriter/record executive Smokey Robinson began carving his monumental place in American music in the late 1950s and remains an active performer and recording artist today. In tonight’s program, he shares recollections of his 50-year career with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, with Motown Records, and on his own. Born in Detroit in 1940,William Robinson was branded “Smokey” by an uncle at an early age. By age 15, Robinson had formed his own singing group, the Matadors. At 18, he met soonto-be-legendary Berry Gordy and encouraged Gordy to start a record label of his own. Gordy did that, founding Tamla Records in 1959.Tamla quickly evolved into Motown Records, with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles one of its first groups signed. In 1961, the label had its first million-seller with the group’s Shop Around. Gordy named Robinson vice president of the company, giving the young singer a major role as advisor, talent scout and producer. Over the next 15 years, Motown released 15 Smokey Robinson and the Miracles albums, with a total of 37 top-40 hits among them, including You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me, Ooo Baby Baby, The Tracks of My Tears, Going to a Go-Go, I Second That Emotion and The Tears of a Clown. Robinson also wrote and produced dozens of hits for other Motown artists—among them Mary Wells’s My Guy, Marvin Gaye’s I’ll Be Doggone, and The Temptations’ My Girl and The Way You Do the Things You Do. In the early 1970s, Robinson left the group and created the first of 16 solo albums he would

record for Motown before the label was sold to MCA in 1988.The hits kept coming: a number one R&B tune, BabyThat’s Backatcha; a top single, Quiet Storm, which spawned a smooth-blues nighttime radio format called “quiet storm”;Cruisin’, Being WithYou, Tell Me Tomorrow, Ebony Eyes, and 1987’s Grammy Award-winning Just to See Her. Robinson has continued to perform and tour at intervals since the 1980s. In 2004, he released his first gospel album, and in 2006, he released an album of pop standards. He makes many appearances on television as a guest and in cameo roles.

Smokey Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1990. In 2006, he received an honorary doctorate from Howard University and was named a Kennedy Center performing arts honoree. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—to be joined in 2009 by another star for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. In 1989, he wrote his autobiography in collaboration with David Ritz, Smokey: Inside My Life.

Ooo Baby Baby (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles), Get Ready (Temptations), Let’s Stay Together (Al Green), In The Still of the Night (Five Satins), and Betcha By Golly Wow (Stylistics) are just a few of the many songs that comprise Bak N Da Day’s repertoire from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Founded in 1999 by Russell Bennett (bass), the group consists of Anthony Harris (baritone), Jeffrey Goode (2nd tenor), and Larry Jones and Larry Everett (1st tenors). It was Bennett’s desire to fulfill a lifelong dream of singing with an aggregation of colleagues and friends who have fun crooning those evergreens from a time when you could “understand the words.” With a dynamic sound and a reputation for being sharp dressers with slick routines, the group has performed at many events, including The

Richmond Forum in 2006. They have opened for acts such as Howard Hewitt, Stephanie Mills and the O’Jays. Just as comfortable rendering romance ballads by the Flamingos, Skyliners and the Five Satins as they are with raucous ditties, such as Tossin and Turnin (Bobby Lewis), their grasp of Motown ranges from the sounds of the Temptations and the Miracles, to the Four Tops and Jimmy Ruffin, with a little Lionel Richie and the Commodores thrown in. So take a trip down memory lane tonight with Richmond’s quintessential oldies vocal group, Bak N Da Day.

Smokey, Welcome to The Richmond Forum.

February 19, 1940: William “Smokey” Robinson is born in Detroit, Michigan. 1955: The most successful of the R&B vocal groups formed in the mid-50s, the Miracles were founded by Smokey Robinson, Emerson Rogers, Bobby Rogers, Ronnie White, and Warren “Pete” Moore. Initially known as the Five Chimes, then as the Matadors, the group became the Miracles in 1958. February 19, 1958: Got a Job, the first single by the Miracles, is released, coinciding with leader Smokey Robinson’s 18th birthday. January 12,1959: Motown is born. Encouraged by his first Top 10 hit as a songwriter (Jackie Wilson’s Lonely Teardrops), Berry Gordy launches the Tamla Record Company on a $800 family loan. A year later, Gordy changes his young company’s name to Motown Record Corporation. 1961: Motown releases its first two albums, one of which is Hi, We’re The Miracles. From that album, the single Shop Around becomes Motown’s first national No. 1 R&B hit and fares nearly as well on the pop chart, where it peaks at No. 2. It is kept out of the top spot by Lawrence Welk’s bubbly instrumental, Calcutta. December 1962: The “Motortown Special” climaxes its first national road tour with a 10-day engagement at the Apollo Theatre in New York. The lineup: The Miracles, Mary Wells,

Martha & The Vandellas, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes,The Contours, Mary Johnson, and Singin’ Sammy Ward. 1963: The Fabulous Miracles becomes Motown’s first album to appear on the pop album chart, featuring the Top 10 hit You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me. Smokey Robinson’s success creating hits for both the Miracles and other Motown acts results in him being named vice president of the company. That year, The Beatles pay homage to the Motown Sound on their album With The Beatles, covering the Marvalettes’ hit, Please Mr. Postman. 1965: The Temptations’ My Girl hits No. 1, less than a year after Mary Wells’ My Guy topped the chart. Smokey Robinson wrote both songs (collaborating with Ronnie White on My Girl). Both songs become instant standards. The soon-to-be classic album Going To A Go-Go by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles is released with Smokey Robinson having top billing. It reaches No. 8 and yields four hits: Ooo Baby Baby, The Tracks of My Tears, My Girl Has Gone and Going to a Go-Go. 1967: I Second That Emotion Hits No. 1.

motown’s 50th anniversary

Motown’s 50th Anniversary As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown Records made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and theVandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided

country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and race. No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop, Motown celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding. Motown, of course, stands for more than just the historic music. The label and its remarkable legacy is a reflection of the hard work of Continued dedicated individuals overcoming

incredible obstacles to achieve great success. Over a half-century ago, on January 12, 1959, to be exact, a young African-American songwriter named Berry Gordy founded Tamla Records with a loan of $800 from his family, marking the birth of the “Motown Records Corporation.” A man of vision, drive, talent and determination, Berry Gordy was also a producer, innovative entrepreneur, and teacher. The phenomenal success of Motown Records is a tribute to all that he embodied and all the talent that he brought out in others. Under his leadership, and through determination and support of the Motown family of artists, Gordy forged new grounds for minorities and made the “Motown Sound” a worldwide phenomenon beloved by millions. Berry Gordy always learned from all his experiences and applied them to his business. He put the tedious time he spent working on the assembly line at Detroit’s Lincoln-Mercury automobile plant to good use: “Every day I watched how a bare metal frame, rolling down the line would come off the other end, a spanking brand

new car. What a great idea! Maybe, I could do the same thing with my music. Create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door, an unknown, go through a process, and come out another door, a star.” That little thought that came to him while running up and down that assembly line became a reality we now know as “Motown.” When Motown was housed in its famed “Hitsville U.S.A.” offices at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it was not just a location; history would be made there. In fact, Berry Gordy created a 24 hour hit-making and artist development factory, nurturing the artistic talent of the singers, writers, and producers, as well as corporate executives. Today, Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard, but an institution, a state of mind, a way of life, a style, the “Sound of Young America.” The distinctive, upbeat and uplifting music brought together pop and soul, white and black, old and young, like never before and continues to this day. Regardless of race or social background, teenage

The Four Tops

girls admired Diana Ross and teenage boys pretended to be Smokey Robinson. Motown became the heartbeat of American pop music. With multi-platinum artists ranging from the Miracles, Temptations, Four Tops and Supremes to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson 5, the House That Gordy Built had and has no rival. Motown defined the term “crossover” not only on record and stage, but also behind the scenes. After breaking down barriers and having pop radio embrace Motown artists, Berry Gordy set his sights on television. He booked his artists on popular shows such as American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show, making history as the first African-American artists on these shows. After captivating national audiences with repeat performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Supremes were the first R&B act to play the country’s most prestigious night club, New York’s Copacabana, which paved the way for other R&B acts into the top cabaret circuits around the world. Motown was the first African-Americanowned record label to reach widespread national

acclaim. Motown broke down racial prejudice by becoming the most successful independent record company in history and the most successful African-American owned business in America. After Gordy purchased that first Detroit property, he converted the garage into a small recording studio and the kitchen into the control room. The company’s first signing was the Miracles, led by Smokey Robinson, and its first release was Marv Johnson’s Come to Me, January 21, 1959. But its first major hit was Barrett Strong’s Money (That’s What I Want), a song co-written by Gordy himself, which reached No. 2 on Billboard’s R&B chart in 1960. A year later, the Miracles would score the company’s first million seller with Shop Around. That same year, teen girl group the Marvelettes landed the company’s first pop No. 1, Please Mr. Postman, while the label signed two young groups, the Supremes and the Temptations.Within three years, those two groups would lead Motown into the mainstream, when the Supremes launched an unprecedented string of five consecutive No. 1 hits, Continued

starting with Where Did Our Love Go, while the Temptations released the eternal Motown classic, My Girl. In 1968 the company had five records out of the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and accomplished another unprecedented feat by seizing the top three spots for a full month. Upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Motown’s founder was given the following tribute: Gordy endeavored to reach across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin. Under his tutelage, Motown became a model of black capitalism, pride and selfexpression and a repository for some of the greatest talent ever assembled at one company… Motown’s stable of singers, songwriters, producers and musicians took the concept of simple, catchy pop songs to a whole new level of sophistication and, thanks to the music’s roots in gospel and blues, visceral intensity… After Motown, black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste… Aesthetically no less than commercially, Motown’s achievements will likely remain unrivaled and untoppable.

Today, the label is part of the Universal Music Group, with its classic recorded music catalog managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The timeless songs from Motown between 1959 and 1985 are represented by EMI Music Publishing. From late 2008 to the end of 2009, Universal Music Group and EMI Music Publishing are marking the historic Detroit label’s musical achievements with a series of initiatives. Notably, Universal Music Enterprises will issue monthly music releases in both physical and digital formats, with bonus tracks enhancing these packages. Details will be announced as each new package approaches. Also upcoming throughout the celebration are releases of classic Motown Television specials in a series of DVD collections and INSIDE MOTOWN, a multi-part documentary on how the company was built.
