At Davenport & Company LLC, we believe that wealth management is timeless. Opportunities arise, trends change, and technologies evolve— but the fundamentals of investment research and management remain. Peggy Noonan is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Wall Street Journal, where her weekly column, “Declarations,” has run since 2000. She is also the bestselling author of nine books on American politics, history, and culture, including the best sellers What I Saw at the Revolution and When Character Was King. She is one of ten historians and writers who contributed essays on the American presidency for the book Character Above All. In her most recent release, The Time of Our Lives, Noonan chronicles her career in journalism, the Reagan White House, and the political arena. In 2017, Noonan was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Political Commentary for her coverage of the 2016 presidential election. The prize committee cited her for “rising to the moment with beautifully rendered columns that connected readers to the shared virtues of Americans during one of the nation’s most divisive political campaigns.” In 2011, she was honored as Columnist of the Year by The Week, which said of her work, “In an era of rigid polarization, she embraces the nearly lost art of open-mindedness.” Her prose, said the magazine, “is subtle and striking, and the clarity of her observations can be devastating.” In 2008, The National Journal dubbed Noonan’s political column indispensable to an understanding of the presidential year, and Forbes Magazine called her column “principled, perceptive, persuasive, and patriotic.” Noonan’s essays have appeared in TIME, Newsweek, The Washington Post and other publications, and she provides frequent political commentary on NBC and MSNBC. She has also been a fellow at Harvard University’s
Institute of Politics and has taught in the history department at Yale University. Beginning in 1984, Noonan served as a Special Assistant and speechwriter to President Ronald Reagan. In the White House, she worked alongside the President on speeches that spanned the 40th anniversary of D-Day, the Challenger disaster, and his Farewell Address. Later, while working for then Vice President George H. W. Bush’s 1988 presidential campaign, Noonan coined the phrase “a kinder, gentler nation” and also popularized “a thousand points of light,” two memorable catchphrases used by Bush. Noonan also wrote Bush’s Republican Convention acceptance speech in which he pledged: “Read my lips: no new taxes.” Before entering the Reagan White House, Noonan spent three years at CBS News in New York writing radio commentaries for Dan Rather. Noonan was born in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, New Jersey. Today, she lives in New York City.

Nathan Mills received his master’s degree in classical guitar performance from East Carolina University and bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was awarded the Jesus Silva Merit Scholarship for guitar. Now a husband to his lovely wife Bekkah and father to two beautiful children, Nathan has built an audience online under the name “Beyond The Guitar,” creating music videos featuring his unique classical guitar arrangements of movie, television, and video game soundtracks. His YouTube channel has become one of the largest and fastest growing classical guitar channels on the platform, reaching over 300,000 subscribers. His latest project involves teaching other guitarists how to create their own classical and fingerstyle guitar arrangements through his website BeyondTheGuitar.com. Tonight, Nathan will perform a selection of his movie theme arrangements in honor of Peggy Noonan. In a 2015 column titled Music in the Key of America, Noonan explained why she listens to movie music when she writes: “It stirs me. It is derived from an American art form, film, and reminds me of the America I love as I do my work, which mostly deals with the daily muck of politics and culture, which is not always so lovable.”

In honoring Peggy Noonan, The Week wrote “the clarity of her observations can be devastating.” The following excerpts are from recent “Declarations” columns. Which of these observations do you believe are on the mark? It was probably better for journalism when reporters hid their causes… (January 30, 2020) I believe the president is guilty of shaking down the government of Ukraine for personal political gain, that he has rightly been embarrassed for this, and that the fit final punishment with an election coming was censure, not impeachment. (January 23, 2020) Speaker Nancy Pelosi made herself look ridiculous this year when she backed lowering the voting age to 16. …Young people are educated more poorly, and the screens that surround them and through which they learn encourage sensation, not thought. Their experience of the world is limited; most are financially and emotionally supported by others. All this as the questions we face grow more complex. We should raise the voting age, not lower it. (January 2, 2020) The rising millennial left seems to love high abstractions—economic justice, global movements for change. But they weren’t raised in a patriotic age, they weren’t taught what in America is admirable, even noble. Do they love America? Do they love this thing we have and are part of in the same, moist-eyed way Americans have in the past? It’s unclear. But if they don’t, when they triumph we’re in trouble. (December 26, 2019) When people have peace and prosperity they don’t like to make a change at the top. That’s what saved Bill Clinton when he was impeached. They knew he’d done what he was accused of, but they let it go. (December 19, 2019) The left is turning Donald Trump into a savior. He was not a savior before AOC. He was not a savior before Elizabeth and Bernie said they’d ban your health insurance. But the past year has allowed the president’s supporters, and independents, to see him that way. It has given them something new to fight for, something better. They don’t have to say, “I’m for Trump because I love him,” or think, “I’m for Trump because I have sacrificed all standards for power.” They can say, “I’m going to defend the free-market system and our liberties by voting for Trump.” (December 19, 2019) (Continued)

Story?
In a great roiling democracy tact isn’t only desirable, it is necessary. We won’t hold together as a nation without it. And we don’t value it at all. We let it slide down the hole of old habits. Who teaches civic tact now? What has taken its place in our political culture is a spirit of maximalism—let’s rub their faces in it. (July 18, 2019) More than ever, the adults have to rise to the fore and set the template for what is admirable. If we don’t, those who follow us will be less admirable even than us, and those after them less admirable still. (April 5, 2018)

When we talk about politics we all obsess on alt-right and progressive left, those peas in a sick pod, and no one speaks of the center, which is vast and has something neither way-left nor way-right has, and that is a motivating love for America itself, and not for abstractions and ideologies and theories of the case. As a group they are virtually ignored, and yet they are the center of everything. They include those of the left who are no longer comfortable in a new progressive party. And rightists not comfortable with Mr. Trump, or with the decisions and approaches of the Bush era. It includes those experiencing ongoing EID—extreme ideological discomfort. In this cycle they continue to be the great ignored. And everyone knows. (September 13, 2019)

Dave Isay, Catherine Burns & Br andon Stanton How Our Stories Connect Us
Around a microphone, in front of a live audience, or with a camera and a question, Dave Isay (StoryCorps), Catherine Burns (The Moth), Brandon Stanton (Humans of New York), and moderator John Donvan explored how our stories can connect us in today’s increasingly divided and digital world, and how to use the lessons of their work to connect more deeply with the people around us—whether they be across the dinner table, the street, the community, or the political divide.
“Wow!!! Again, you really hit it out of the park with these three talented, committed, interesting people. The grouping of these three individuals was perfect!! Generous subscriber support in 2019 enabled the rapid expansion of the Richmond Region Speech & Debate Initiative for the 2019-2020 school year. In our second year, we are proud to now support speech and debate teams at 21 out of the 33 public high schools in Richmond, Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico with over 450 participating students. Speech and debate programs teach critical communication, creative thinking, and citizenship skills to the next generation of employees, community members, and leaders. Above: Speech and debate students from around the region competing at a recent tournament at Clover Hill High School. As regional, state, and national competition season begins, your support will help defray the cost of tournament entry fees, travel, and materials.
