Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN whose medical training and public health policy experience inform his award-winning reporting. He covers war zones and natural disasters around the world, and reports on a range of medical and scientific topics: the opioid crisis, healthcare reform, medical marijuana, and more. Since joining CNN in the summer of 2001, Dr. Gupta has covered the most important health stories in the United States and around the world. He reported from New York following the attacks of September 11, 2001. He has embedded with the U.S. military in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, and performed life-saving brain surgery five times during his coverage of battlefield operations and medicine. His distinguished reporting on major natural disasters, including the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, contributed to CNN’s Peabody and Alfred I. duPontColumbia Award-winning reporting of those disasters. Coverage of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti for Anderson Cooper 360° earned him two Emmy Awards. His investigation into Charity Hospital in New Orleans after Katrina earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Feature Story. Gupta received another duPontColumbia Award for his four-part documentary series about medical marijuana, WEED. Other influential work includes his reporting on the botched Healthcare.gov website rollout, the Ebola outbreak, the earthquake in Nepal, the Pulse nightclub shooting, the Flint water crisis, and the breakdown in the medical infrastructure of post-hurricane Puerto Rico.

Gupta’s passion for inspiring Americans to lead healthier, more active lives led him to launch “Fit Nation,” CNN’s multi-platform lifestyle initiative on his weekly series, Sanjay Gupta, M.D., which has received four Daytime Emmy Award nominations. He is also the host of Vital Signs, CNN’s series on health stories from around the globe. Gupta also contributes to 60 Minutes and serves as an executive producer for HBO’s documentary unit. He is the author of three New York Times bestselling books: Chasing Life, Cheating Death, and a novel, Monday Mornings. He is a member of the staff and faculty at the Emory University School of Medicine and Associate Chief of Neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital. In 2018, Gupta launched the Gupta Family Initiative in Health Communications at the University of Michigan. Gupta holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and an M.D. from its medical school. Early Life and Education (1969–2001) Sanjay Gupta credits his parents, who are both engineers and immigrants from India, for instilling in him a strong work ethic and drive for learning. Growing up in Michigan, he was accepted into Inteflex, a University of Michigan program that admitted high school students directly into a combined undergraduate and medical school education. Gupta earned his undergraduate degree and M.D. from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in eight years. While a student, Gupta reported on If I could help a patient onehealthcare issues for the student newspaper. on-one in a doctor’s office, His writing got national attention, including think how many more I could publication in The Economist, and the interest reach with a story about of then-Governor Bill Clinton (The Richmond a promising new cancer treatment or information on Forum, 2013) and Hillary Clinton. He later preventive medicine. worked as a White House Fellow, planning –Sanjay Gupta events and writing speeches for the first lady. After the White House, Gupta returned to the University of Michigan to complete his residency in neurosurgery within the university’s health system. A Pivotal Year: Emory and CNN (2001) In October 2001, Dr. Gupta flew to Atlanta to interview for a position at Emory University and Hospital, where he still works today. At the airport, he ran into Tom Johnson, CEO of CNN: “…and I mean that literally. I bumped into him. I didn’t want to be a reporter I’d known him from my work at the White without that firsthand House.” Johnson said CNN was starting a experience of being a doctor. medical division, and offered Gupta a position. –Sanjay Gupta Gupta accepted on the condition that he could continue to see patients and perform surgery. Neurosurgeon and Medical Reporter (2001—present) Dr. Gupta has performed his dual roles as practicing neurosurgeon at Emory and Grady Memorial hospitals and as medical reporter for CNN for over 17 years. His worlds occasionally collide, like when he was called upon to perform surgery while reporting the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti (right). On the Ground Sanjay Gupta reports from the world’s crisis points 2001: New York City, New York Dr. Sanjay Gupta began his medical journalism career at CNN in the summer of 2001. A few months later, he got his first major reporting job: covering the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City. 2003: Baghdad, Iraq When the invasion of Iraq began in 2003, Dr. Gupta embedded with the U.S. Navy’s “Devil Docs” unit that traveled just behind the frontline troops into Baghdad. He was there to cover battlefield medicine, but ended up being recruited five times to perform brain surgery since the unit’s staff did not include a neurosurgeon. Notable surgeries included one on a young Iraqi boy that gained national news attention, and another on a Marine who had been shot in the head. 2004: Sri Lanka Dr. Gupta covered the catastrophic tsunami in southeast Asia that killed over 155,000 people.

His reporting contributed to a 2005 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award for CNN. 2005: New Orleans, Louisiana Dr. Gupta’s medical reporting in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina contributed to CNN’s 2005 Peabody Award for its coverage on the effects of the storm. In particular, Gupta’s investigation into Charity Hospital revealed that official reports that the hospital had been evacuated were incorrect—more than 200 patients remained without power, food, or potable water. 2010: Haiti Dr. Gupta flew to Port-au-Prince in the aftermath of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake to report on the destruction, but was quickly drawn in to help the injured. Most famously, he performed surgery aboard the U.S.S. Vinson on a 12-year-old girl. His actions saved lives, but observers questioned the conflict between objective journalism and the Hippocratic oath.

Sri Lanka

2010: Gulf of Mexico Dr. Gupta broke the story of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill for CNN, noting a devastating outlook for what would become a 206-million-gallon spill. He later interviewed clean-up crews and investigated their safety procedures. 2011: Tokyo, Japan In 2011, Japan was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake—the 4th most powerful in recorded history—and a subsquent tsunami that caused thousands of deaths and billions of dollars in damage, including to sensitive nuclear power centers. Dr. Gupta reported on the human impact of the disaster, and on concerns about radiation from the damaged reactors. 2014: Conakry, Guinea Dr. Gupta traveled to Conakry, Guinea, to cover the emerging and deadly West African Ebola outbreak that already was spreading to neighboring countries Sierra Leone and Liberia.

2016: Flint, Michigan In 2016, Dr. Gupta reported on the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan, that resulted from extremely high levels of lead in the water, making it unsafe to drink and raising serious health concerns for Flint residents. 2016: Orlando, Florida Dr. Gupta traveled to Orlando, Florida, after the shooting at the Pulse nightclub that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others, to talk to survivors and responders about the immediate response to the attack. 2017: Puerto Rico In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, destroying most of its electrical grid and causing one of the largest power outages in American history, which took 11 months to address. Dr. Gupta traveled to the U.S. territory to report on the storm’s aftermath, and to help provide medical supplies to victims.

On the Progress of Medicine In medicine, there’s often a choice between pursuing the known course, the comfortable course, the well-worn path—and trying something new. Innovation might save some lives and yet at the same time cost lives. Medicine in general is geared towards caution. First, do no harm. And yet, our greatest learning comes not from never failing, but in learning from our mistakes, rising up every time we do fail. Source: Cheating Death (2009), Sanjay Gupta On Healing, Medicine, and Faith I have been a physician for sixteen years, and as a neurosurgeon, I’ve spent much of my life peering into a microscope, distinguishing good tissues from diseased tissue and carving out the problem with sharp instruments and electrically charged probes. I don’t spend a lot of time talking about faith. I was never formally trained in the interplay between the type of healing we think of in hospitals and the type of healing that takes place in private, deep in the recesses of our own minds. Yet over time, I have come to deeply appreciate the place of prayer in the healing process. Source: Cheating Death (2009), Sanjay Gupta “Practical Immortality”: Dr. Gupta’s Guide to Health & Wellness Dr. Gupta frequently gives pragmatic advice for achieving what he calls “practical immortality,” or the concept of living an active life as long as one wants to live it, through advancements in biological science and restorative medicine. In the future, he says, doctors will have the same level of knowledge about maintaining a healthy body—by exchanging organs, rejuvenating cells, and using nanotechnology to eliminate diseases like cancer—that we do about something like home repair today. But while he sees practical immortality as a possibility for the future, he says there are simpler steps to achieve longevity today: a healthy diet, physical and mental exercise, and positive attitude, hobbies, and social life. Source: Chasing Life (2007), Sanjay Gupta “Why I Changed My Mind On Weed” In his 2009 TIME article, “Why I Would Vote No On Pot,” Dr. Gupta cited a lack of positive medical evidence for the benefits of legalizing marijuana. He said that instead of voting to alleviate the few symptoms it was shown to help, pro-marijuana voters were “just looking to get high.” Gupta changed his mind while interviewing medical leaders, experts, growers, and patients for his documentary series about the drug, WEED (2013-2018). He notes the medical risks and the challenges of scientific study on a still-illegal substance, but says there are “very legitimate medical applications,” including some conditions where marijuana is the “only thing that works.” Source: “Why I Changed My Mind On Weed,” Sanjay Gupta

The Opioid Crisis & “Deaths of Despair” Abuse and overdoses of prescription drugs, particularly opioids like fentanyl, led to over 72,000 deaths in 2017, and have caused a decline in life expectancy in the United States for the second year in a row, according to reports released by the Centers for Disease Control in December 2018. The odds of dying from opioid overdose are now greater than dying in a car accident: 1 in 96 compared to 1 in 103. This phenomenon was listed #2 on Dr. Gupta’s “Top Health Stories of 2018,” along with an increase in suicide rates by 40%. These “deaths of despair” were underscored by the highprofile suicides of designer Kate Spade and Gupta’s CNN colleague Anthony Bourdain. Source: “Mortality in the United States, 2017,” CDC

Public Health Trends: Climate Change and the Spread of Flu The effects of climate change were listed as the #1 health story of 2018 by Dr. Gupta. Wildfires in California, diseases spread by ticks and mosquitos, and droughts across the country will lead to “the premature deaths of thousands of Americans.” In his newsletter last month, Dr. Gupta noted that over 6 million Americans have contracted the flu this flu season and continue to get sick, even into February. He stressed that it’s “still not too late to get your flu shot.” However, Gupta also reported that researchers at the NIH are getting close to a “universal flu vaccine” that would protect against the virus over multiple seasons. Tina Fey Funny You Should Ask

In January, acclaimed actress and comedian Tina Fey sat down at The Forum with moderator Linda Holmes for “Funny You Should Ask,” a conversation about Fey’s life and career.

Jennifer Hunter welcomed the Forum audience on behalf of Altria, the Lead Patron for the evening.

Another sensation out of Charlottesville, Love Canon, entertained Forum subscribers before the program with bluegrass covers of ‘80s and ‘90s pop hits.

“Tina Fey’s talent, professional skill, and insight are inspiring. Watching Linda Holmes moderate the first half without a single note was impressive. Seeing two very intelligent, quick-witted, and confident women interact on stage was thrilling.” Subscriber comment

Steve Otero of Capital One welcomed Ms. Fey to Richmond and The Forum.

“Tina Fey was one of the most entertaining guests ever at The Forum. In a time when there is so much daily stress in life and in the news, it was a joy to have an evening to smile and laugh in the company of others.”

“Tina Fey’s “Yes, and...” rule of improv and of life was a huge take away.” Subscriber comment

One of The Forum’s most requested speakers of the past ten years, the University of Virginia alum discussed her time on Saturday Night Live, her shows 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Great News, and adapting her beloved movie Mean Girls into a Broadway musical. Fey gave the Forum audience a taste of the creative energy and quick wit that turned a young, aspiring comedian into the award-winning Tina Fey.
