Mary Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin is a prominent author and speaker on autism and animal behavior, a consultant on livestock handling and animal welfare, and a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Grandin didn’t talk until she was threeand-a-half years old, communicating instead by screaming, peeping, and humming. In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. Even though she was bullied for being “weird” in her young school years, she eventually found a mentor in her science teacher, who recognized her interests—horses, electronics, and model rockets—and her abilities, and encouraged her passion for science. Grandin developed those interests into a successful career engineering livestockhandling equipment. Today, half of the cattle in the U.S. and Canada are handled in facilities she designed. She has also developed animal welfare guidelines for the meat industry. Her 1986 book, Emergence: Labeled Autistic, stunned the world because until its publication most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was a death sentence for a person’s achievement or productivity. In the foreword of Grandin’s Thinking in Pictures, neurologist Oliver Sacks wrote that her first book was “unprecedented because there had never before been an inside narrative of autism.” Her other bestselling books include The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger’s, The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum, Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships, Animals Make Us Human, and Animals in Translation. Her most recent book, Calling All

Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor, shows young readers how to think like her by sharing many of the projects Grandin worked on as a child. Dr. Grandin has been featured in national radio, television, and print media, including on the TIME 100 list of the most influential people. Her life story, with its many challenges and successes, was brought to the screen in HBO’s Emmy Award-winning movie Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes, and in the award-winning children’s book The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Temple Grandin. She is an inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and a past board member of the Autism Society of America. Dr. Grandin holds a Bachelor’s degree in human psychology from Franklin Pierce College, a Master’s degree in animal science from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Grandin lives and farms in Fort Collins, Colorado.

John Donvan is a four-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, storyteller, author, and speaker. A veteran network correspondent for ABC News and CNN, Donvan served as Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News, and held long-term assignments in Moscow, London, Jerusalem, and Amman. He is a contributor for NPR, hosts and moderates the Intelligence Squared U.S. debate series, and has moderated several Richmond Forum programs. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his book In A Different Key: The Story of Autism (2016, co-authored with Caren Zucker) on the history of autism and autism advocacy. In a Different Key is the basis for an upcoming documentary film of the same name to be produced by its authors. On the film’s crowdsourcing page, Donvan and Zucker introduce it as “the first-ever full-length documentary to travel the timeline of society’s tense and sometimes misguided response to people on the autism spectrum.” Donvan holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from Dartmouth College and a Master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism. Donvan is married to Dr. Ranit Mishori, and lives in Washington, D.C. They have two children.

At 26 years old, Matt Savage has had a remarkable career as a jazz musician, bandleader, and composer. Growing up on a farm, Savage could not easily tolerate sounds and was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. After four years of intensive therapies, he immersed himself in music, teaching himself to play piano. Savage quickly developed his musical abilities; he was labeled a jazz prodigy at age eight and has performed all over the world with the biggest names in jazz, including trumpeter Wynton Marsalis (The Richmond Forum, 1998). In addition to performing in world-class

venues and at festivals internationally, Savage’s own compositions fill his 13 studio albums, including Splash Variations (2018). Savage holds a Bachelor’s in piano performance from Berklee College of Music and a Master’s in jazz performance from Manhattan College of Music. Based in Boston, he continues to perform, and teaches masterclasses, workshops, and private lessons. On Her First Signs of Autism, from Thinking in Pictures I was my mother’s first child, and I was like a little wild animal. I struggled to get away when held, but if I was left alone in the big baby carriage I seldom fussed. Mother first realized that something was dreadfully wrong when I failed to start talking like the little girl next door, and it seemed that I might be deaf.…At that time, I showed the symptoms of classic autism: no speech, poor eye contact, appearance of deafness, no interest in people, and constant staring off into space.

On “Thinking in Pictures” and Her Understanding of Autism, from Thinking In Pictures One of the most profound mysteries of autism has been the remarkable ability of most autistic people to excel at visual spacial skills while performing so poorly at verbal skills. When I was a child and a teenager, I thought everybody thought in pictures. I had no idea that my thought processes were different. In fact, I did not realize the full extent of the differences until very recently. At meetings and at work I started asking other people detailed questions about how they accessed information from their memories.

On Setting Expectations for Children with Autism, from TempleGrandin.com I see too many kids [with autism] who are smart and did well in school, but they’re not getting a job because when they were young, they didn’t learn any work skills… In my generation, paper routes taught important working skills. Today, parents should set up jobs a child can do in the neighborhood such as walking dogs for the neighbors. Younger children can do volunteer jobs outside the home such as being an usher at a house of worship or community center. This will teach both discipline and responsibility. It improved my self esteem to be recognized for doing a job well. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of developmental disorders that are characterized by sensitivity to external stimuli, repetitive behavioral patterns, and difficulties in social communication. Since the first autism diagnoses in the 1950s, the language around ASD has changed—other labels include Asperger’s syndrome (also called “high-functioning autism”), Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD), and childhood disintegrative disorder. The American Psychiatric Association, the organization that oversees the diagnosis of autism and other mental disorders, updated the language and criteria to its current state with DSM-5, the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2013). Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 “Requiring support” • Difficulty initiating social interactions • Organization and planning problems can limit independence Level 2 “Requiring substantial support” • Social interactions limited to narrow special interests • Frequent restricted/repetitive behaviors Level 3 “Requiring very substantial support” • Severe deficits in verbal/non-verbal communication skills • Great difficulty changing actions or focus

Autism Spectrum Disorder in DSM-5 Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Symptoms are present in early development and cause significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Disturbances are not better explained by intellectual disability.

How to Handle Livestock Though Temple Grandin is widely known as an advocate and speaker on autism, she considers herself first and foremost a scientist. From an early age she felt a connection to animals, and because of her autism and the way she “thinks in pictures,” she found she could relate to how animals see the world. That connection, her artistic ability, and early experiences as a farm hand at her aunt’s ranch led to a career in livestockhandling equipment design and animal welfare. Today, half of the cattle raised and slaughtered in the United States and Canada are processed in equipment she designed. I think using animals for food is an ethical thing to do, but we’ve got to do it right. We’ve got to give those animals a decent life and we’ve got to give them a painless death. We owe the animal respect. –Temple Grandin

Her observations of animals—like that cattle would balk at shiny objects in a chute, or that they liked to travel counterclockwise in groups—informed her design decisions to produce equipment that was more efficient than any made up until that point. Other engineers tried to force animals into systems that made sense to humans; Dr. Grandin designed systems that were tailored to the animals. From Squeeze Chute to Hug Machine One of Dr. Grandin’s earliest and most well-known designs is the “hug machine.” Modeled after the squeeze chutes she observed on her aunt’s farm, the machine is a stress-relieving device that Grandin created during college to soothe her anxiety. Grandin observed the way that the deep touch pressure administered by the device would instantly calm cattle, and discovered that her machine could create a similar effect for people with high levels of over-stimulation or anxiety.

From the Executive Director This has been a remarkable season. Not only with some of our highest-rated speakers of the last ten years, but also with the exciting growth of our student programs. Since 2010, with your support, we’ve been able to launch a number of initiatives designed to give local students access to our sold-out programs, and direct access to our speakers. Our speakers love the opportunity to engage with our community’s young people, and our students benefit in lifechanging ways through exposure to the individuals and ideas that are shaping our world. In November, we announced an ambitious new initiative to support speech and debate programs in our region’s public schools, an extension of our foundational belief that the ability to civilly articulate and debate ideas and points of view is critical to a functioning democracy. Designed to be a learning year, we awarded grants averaging $2,000 each to nine high schools in Chesterfield, and to George Wythe High School in Richmond. The impact of these first-year grants has exceeded our expectations: three schools in Chesterfield were able to start teams; schools with existing teams were able to participate in more and higher-level competitions; 60% more Chesterfield students participated in speech and debate programs this year than in 2017-2018; and for the first time ever, a George Wythe student made it to the State Championship, competing in the “Extemporaneous” speaking category. Building on that success, this summer, we will award eight scholarships to enable students to participate in the Virginia Debate Academy and strengthen their skills for next season. We will also make it possible for two coaches to attend the National Speech & Debate Association’s Coaches Conference in Colorado Springs in August, so our region’s teams can start to become more nationally competitive. And next year, with your support, we look forward to supporting more teams in additional school systems. In March, geopolitical analyst Dr. Ian Bremmer engaged the Richmond Forum audience with his analysis of the global trends that shape today’s political landscape, and a healthy dose of humor.

I grew up in Zimbabwe and remember the food crisis that left me and millions of others facing starvation. Now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m on a mission to prevent future famines in Africa using the power of big data. My startup is developing a mobile app that allows farmers to upload all kinds of information to help maximize their efficiency.
