Tonight’s Lead Patron

Altria’s companies have a strong American heritage stretching back more than 180 years. Our companies include some of the most enduring names in American business: Philip Morris USA, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, the maker of Copenhagen and Skoal moist smokeless tobacco. We also own John Middleton, manufacturer of Black & Mild cigars, Nat Sherman, a super-premium cigarette and cigar business, as well as Nu Mark, an innovation company. Our companies are strengthening the communities where we live and work. This includes focusing on our employees, retailers across the U.S., the farmers who work the fields, and nonprofits to help our communities thrive. We’re also working to enhance economic growth by providing thousands of good-paying jobs. We support approaches to address tough industry issues, like reducing the health effects of tobacco products and reducing underage tobacco use. Our companies talk with stakeholders to get their input on these key

issues. These engagements help us understand society’s expectations and develop responsible business practices. Community nonprofits are important stakeholders. Today, our giving includes education and youth development, arts and culture, and the environment. By investing in these areas and others, Altria’s companies are working to find long-lasting solutions to the challenges facing our communities. In 2017, we donated $14.3 million to Richmond nonprofits and our employees volunteered 12,000 hours supporting 40 different volunteer projects. Altria’s companies’ support for the visual and performing arts goes back more than 50 years. Today, we continue to champion arts and culture organizations that reflect the qualities we value in our businesses—creativity, diversity, excellence and innovation. Our support for arts and cultural initiatives in Richmond, Virginia, focuses on programs that bring world-class cultural experiences to our communities and increase access to the arts. An acclaimed actress, comedian, screenwriter, playwright, producer, author, and mom, Tina Fey is one of America’s most accomplished and beloved entertainers. After cutting her teeth in UVA’s drama program and performing improv comedy with The Second City in Chicago, Fey completed nine seasons as head writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL), and co-hosted the popular “Weekend Update” segment. She won an Emmy Award and two Writers Guild Awards for her writing on SNL and an Emmy for her portrayal of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Fey and frequent collaborator Amy Poehler became the first joint winners of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for co-hosting SNL. In 2006, Fey left the SNL writers’ room to create the award-winning comedy series 30 Rock. She continues to be applauded for the iconic and ground-breaking seven-season run as its executive producer, head writer, and star. Fey ventured into feature films as screenwriter for and actress in the cult classic comedy Mean Girls. Her on-screen successes continued into roles in Baby Mama and Sisters with co-star Amy Poehler, Date Night opposite Steve Carell, and the films Megamind, Admission, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. In 2015, Fey and writing partner Robert Carlock premiered the Netflix Original comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The series, now in its fourth and final season, has been called “the first great sitcom of the streaming era.” Fey and Carlock teamed up again in 2017 to create the NBC mother-daughter sitcom Great News. With her husband, Jeff Richmond, and SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Fey developed a musical theater adaptation of Mean Girls

that debuted in D.C. in 2017 and opened on Broadway in 2018. Based on Fey’s 2004 film, the musical was co-written by Fey (book), Richmond (music), and Nell Benjamin (lyrics), with direction by Casey Nicholaw. It was nominated for twelve Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and nine Drama Desk Awards. Fey’s varied body of work in writing, acting, and producing has earned her nine Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, five Screen Actors Guild Awards, and seven Writers Guild of America Awards. She has been named to prestigious lists of top entertainers from The Associated Press, Entertainment Weekly, and People magazine, and twice to the TIME 100 list of the most influential people. Fey is the youngest-ever recipient of the Mark Twain Award for American Humor. Her memoir, Bossypants, is a New York Times bestseller and her narration of the audiobook earned a Grammy nomination. Fey holds a B.A. in Drama from the University of Virginia. She lives in New York City with her husband and their two daughters, Alice and Penelope.

CONSTRUCTION / DEVELOPMENT

The University of Virginia (1988–1992) At UVA, Fey studied drama and playwriting. According to UVA Magazine, she spent “every waking hour” in the drama building, performing in numerous student productions. In her fourth year, she wrote her first one-act play, Sunday Girls. The Second City (1992–1997) After graduating from UVA in 1992, Fey Tina Fey (left) and Cady Garey as “pinheads” moved to Chicago and began taking classes backstage during a production of The Elephant Man at The Second City, a famous improvisational at the University of Virginia in 1991. Photo: UVA comedy troupe whose alumni includes Alan Department of Drama. Alda (The Richmond Forum, 2016), Martin Short (The Forum, 2014), Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Joan Rivers, Amy Sedaris, and many more. At the time, Second City’s two resident companies wrote and performed original sketches on stage in Chicago, then its three touring companies took the best material on the road to church basements and community centers around the country. Fey performed in the Blue Company, which frequently decided to go off script and opt for their own material instead of the sketches they were directed to perform. At Second City, she met her long-time collaborator, Amy Poehler; her husband, Jeff Richmond; and Adam McKay, an alumnus who became head writer at Saturday Night Live and opened the door for Fey’s interview with SNL creator Lorne Michaels. Saturday Night Live (1997–2006) Fey joined SNL in 1997 and built a reputation for her quick wit, observational comedy, and deadpan delivery, becoming head writer in 1999. She also appeared on camera, co-hosting the popular “Weekend Update” segment with Jimmy Fallon (2000–2004) and Amy Poehler (2004–2006). Critics widely praised “Update” with Fey as co-host, crediting her, Fallon, and Poehler for reviving the segment. Her other popular sketches on Saturday Night Live include “Sully and Denise” with Rachel Dratch, “Mom Jeans,” “Kotex Classic,” and her controversial “sheetcaking” sketch following the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Fey gained national attention with her impression of Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential election. She first performed the Tina Fey first appears as Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. character on September 13, 2008, with Poehler as Hillary Clinton, (continued) September 13, 2008.

and subsequently in a mock Katie Couric (Poehler) interview, a vice presidential debate with Joe Biden (Jason Sudeikis), twice in “Weekend Update,” and alongside Senator John McCain in an election-week QVC spoof. Her Sarah Palin lived what Fey calls the “life cycle of an SNL character”: first-time jitters to Sneaker Upper (where Sarah Palin herself appeared in an “Update” sketch) to “This again?” in a span of six weeks. Mean Girls (2004 & 2018) Tina Fey’s first screenplay, Mean Girls, was based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman and on Fey’s experiences in high school, theater camp, and the drama program at UVA (the protagonist is named after her college roommate Cady Garey). The movie gained a cult following with its depiction of high school cliques, “mean girl” stereotypes, and its memorable and “memeable” quotes. In 2018, the musical theatre adaptation of the story premiered on Broadway. Fey’s book of the musical earned a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award nomination. 30 Rock (2006–2013) During Fey’s eighth season at SNL, when she was contemplating her “post-graduation” plans, Lorne Michaels urged her to make a development deal with NBC. “A development deal,” Fey explained in her bestselling memoir, Bossypants, “means they pay you while you’re thinking, which is a pretty great deal, unless you’re like me and you feel constant anxiety that you haven’t thought of anything yet.” She originally pitched a sitcom about a cable news show [like her 2017 show, Great News], but NBC thought it would be better for Fey to write what she knew best: sketch comedy à la Saturday Night Live. The resulting show, 30 Rock, follows Liz Lemon (Fey), the producer of the fictional NBC sketch comedy show TGS with Tracy Jordan, as she manages the show’s crazy star (Tracy Morgan), her conservative boss (Alec Baldwin), and all of the actors, NBC Pages, and writers who work for her (Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer, Scott Adsit, Judah Friedlander). For seven seasons, Fey was executive producer, head

It won a 2007 Peabody Award for 30 Rock. Bossypants (2011) In 2011, Fey published her bestselling memoir, Bossypants, a “spiky blend of humor, introspection, critical thinking and Nora Ephron-isms for a new generation,” according to the New York Times. Her narration of the audiobook earned a Grammy nomination.

Excerpts from Bossypants (2011) ON IMPROVISATION I moved to Chicago in 1992 to study improv and it was everything I wanted it to be. It was like a cult. People ate, slept, and definitely drank improv. They worked at crappy day jobs just to hand over their money for improv classes. Eager young people in khakis and polo shirts were willing to do whatever teachers like Del Close and Martin de Maat told them to. In retrospect, it may actually have been a cult. …Improvisation as a way of working made sense to me. I love the idea of two actors on stage with nothing—no costumes, no sets, no dialogue—who make up something together that is then completely real to everyone in the room. The rules of improvisation appealed to me not only as a way of creating comedy, but as a worldview. Studying improvisation literally changed my life. It set me on a career path toward Saturday Night Live. It changed the way I look at the world, and it’s where I met my husband. What has your cult done for you lately? ON WORK AND GENDER It seems to me that the fast remedy for this “Women are Crazy” situation is for more women to become producers and hire diverse women of various ages. That is why I feel obligated to stay in the business and try hard to get to a place where I can create opportunities for others, and that’s why I can’t possibly take time off for a second baby*, unless I do, in which case that is nobody’s business and I’ll never regret it for a moment unless it ruins my life. *Editor’s Note: Tina Fey’s second daughter, Penelope, was born in August 2011, four months after the publication of Bossypants. ON THE SUCCESS OF 30 ROCK Now, I know I’m not saying anything that hasn’t been said hundreds of times, but 30 Rock is the perfect symbol for the pro-life movement in America. Here’s this little show that no one thought would make it. I’m sure NBC considered getting rid of it, but by the time we won the Emmy, they were too far along. As the mother of this now five-year-old show, would I still rather have a big, strong Two and a Half Men than our sickly little program? No, I would not because I love my weird little show. I think this show was put on earth to teach me patience and compassion.

Captain Scott Kelly Lessons from a Year in Space

In November at The Forum, former U.S. astronaut Captain Scott Kelly distilled his lessons learned from a career as a Navy fighter pilot and test pilot, and as a NASA astronaut who spent 340 consecutive days in space.

Carroll Swenson of Wells Fargo, the evening’s Lead Patron, introduced Captain Kelly to the Forum audience with anecdotes and videos.

Elizabeth Wise performed a mix of original music, blues standards, and songs from Scott Kelly’s playlist “Songs of a Year in Space.”

“He is an outstanding speaker…Funny and entertaining, he covered very complex topics with ease and finesse. He is one of the top ten speakers we’ve seen over nine years of attending The Richmond Forum.” Subscriber comment

Guests of Hourigan, the Host Patron for the evening, enjoyed dinner conversation with Captain Kelly before the program.

“Very interesting and entertaining! Scott Kelly told a wonderful story along with lots of information about what an astronaut’s job entails. Very informative about the space station and purpose of our space program.” Subscriber comment

He took the stage to a standing ovation from the packed house at Altria Theater.

“Instead of stressing about Thanksgiving prep work, my wife spent the entire next day saying, ‘As Captain Scott taught us, we’re going to control what we can!’” Subscriber comment

Kelly concluded his presentation with these parting thoughts about his year in space: “It was about having a goal and a plan, it was about taking risks, being willing to make mistakes, at times being willing to fail. It was about focusing on the things I could control, and ignore what I couldn’t. It was about testing the status quo, and about working as a team. When I put all of these things together, what I learned is that the sky is not the limit.”

Our 2018-2019 Richmond Forum Scholars Engaging students from the region’s public and independent schools in our programs has always been an important aspect of fulfilling the mission of The Richmond Forum. This season, 50 students are participating in our page program, seating patrons and collecting questions during intermission. Another 500 students will attend our sold-out programs in our Student Room, where they will have the unique opportunity to interact directly with our speakers, and 550 students will hear a keynote from geopolitical analyst Ian Bremmer when the Governor’s School Model United Nations convenes in March. In another very successful student program, now in its sixth season, five of the region’s highest achieving and most impressive high school juniors have been selected to serve as Richmond Forum Scholars. Students from schools around the region submitted applications, video essays, and letters of recommendation, hoping to be selected for this honor. All of the applicants were remarkable in their academic standing and

impressive extra-curricular activities. Twelve students were chosen for interviews, and five outstanding students were ultimately selected as our 2018–2019 Richmond Forum Scholars. They are: Nawal Abbasi – St. Catherine’s School Brandon Brown – Atlee High School Cameron Jarvandi – The Steward School Morgan Rhudy – James River High School Sonali Sanjay – The Steward School These Scholars will work closely with Forum staff to ensure a well-run program by serving in important roles behind the scenes, including checking in guests at our sponsor receptions, escorting speakers throughout the evening, introducing speakers in our Student Room, acting as runners backstage, and helping our photo lines run efficiently. Congratulations to the new Richmond Forum Scholars. We’re happy to have you on our team this season!

Drama queen My dream of becoming a performing artist was bigger than my small town, so I had to follow it far from home. Luckily there were people at VCU to support me all along the way. To find a bigger stage I had to blaze the trail, for myself and for others. My name is Ciara McMillian, and embracing the unknown is how I challenge the norm. VCU is where I make it real. an equal opportunity/affirmative action university
