t was a victorious UFC octagon debut night for Richmond’s Arjan Bhullar.

The 31-year-old scored a unanimous decision over Brazil’s Luis Henrique at UFC 215 on Saturday night in Edmonton.

The first Sikh and South Asian fighter in UFC history took control of the fight with a dominating second round that saw him catch Henrique with a counter right then use his freestyle wrestling background to

pick up his opponent and slam him to the floor. Henrique, 24, rebounded with a better third round but not enough to prevent Bhullar from remaining undefeated in his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career at 7-0.

Following a decorated amateur wrestling career that was highlighted by a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and competing at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, Bhullar had his first amateur MMA bout in 2014 and turned pro later that year.

He signed with UFC in May, shortly after his final victory in the Battlefield Fight League.

“It was amazing. Something you visual-

ize when I made the transition over first of all, then the weeks and months leading up to this,” said Bhullar during his post-fight press conference on Saturday.

“Getting my hands taped, the actual fight, the walk in and walk out, everything went according to how we’d foreseen it.

“The fight went good too. I got a little bit of everything in there. The emotions got a little high when I dropped him but (then) I brought it down and got dialled back in.

More than anything it’s special to hear that crowd out there.”

“I started reeling in as fast as I could and I almost got pulled in myself,” laughed Josh of his big catch on Friday, Sept. 1 while fishing with a one-pound weight.

“But I managed to pull it to the shore myself. I didn’t get a single bite after that!”

Josh, who lives near No. 4 and Francis roads, said he first asked his dad to take him fishing all those years ago after noticing people casting off the dock near the foot of No. 3 Road.

“I really wanted to do it, so my dad started to take me down there,” said Josh, who said fishing is his “favourite thing to do.”

“Now I go down there myself all the time.”

t was about 3 p.m. and Josh Low had only been fishing for 20 minutes when he felt a couple of little nibbles at the end of his line.

A few seconds later, the 13-year-old was then forced to hold onto his rod for his life after one massive bite nearly had his fishing gear wrenched out of his hands and into the south arm of the Fraser River recently.

Stunned McRoberts secondary student Josh – who has been fishing since he was about five years old – then spent the next 30 minutes fighting to haul an eight-foot, 200-pound sturgeon out of the water on the dyke near No. 3 Road.

“We had our own team plane as well as people fly in from California, Toronto and India,” added Bhullar, who has done some training at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. “Now we are all going to the union hall and have one big party.”

The plan was for Bhullar to be joined by his good friend Jinder Mahal for his pre-fight walk-in but he had to stay in Florida due to Hurricane Irma where the WWE pro wrestling star owns four properties.

Bhullar will soon resume training and his coaching duties with the wrestling team at the University of Fraser Valley in Abbotsford where he works alongside former national teammate Raj Virdi.

.C.’s Finance Minister Carole James presented an updated provincial budget on Monday that provided few additional details on how the government plans to improve life in Richmond.

For instance, exactly when 25 schools will receive seismic upgrades and when Richmond Hospital will finally get a new acute care tower remains to be seen. And few details — in James’ speech and the NDP government’s Throne Speech on Friday — have been provided on how the government intends to tackle Metro Vancouver’s highly speculative real estate market.

The budget update outlines broad new spending goals and new taxation measures. James said the party’s election platform will come more into light during the annual budget in February.

As for this week’s update, the big spend comes in the form of a 50 per cent cut to MSP premiums starting Jan. 1. This will cost $1.25 billion.

Health spending is going to be increased by $603 million over three years but no new money was earmarked for Richmond Hospital’s decrepit acute care tower replacement. A new tower is in the business case development stage and local NDP candidates, as well as Premier John Horgan, vowed before the election to expedite the process and have funding ready immediately.

Vancouver Coastal Health said it should finish the business case by year end, leaving the NDP

to approve it. Notably, the budget update adds New Westminster’s Royal Columbian Hospital (Phases 2 and 3) to the capital spending plan at a cost of $1.1 billion, after the BC Liberals approved the business case in April.

There are no details on when Richmond schools will be seismically upgraded. The seismic mitigation program has a $1.3 billion budget to 2030 — a vestige of the BC Liberals.

The update did announce $681 million in new funding for classroom supports over the next three years.

Richmond School District is facing yet another multi-million deficit this year ($6.5 million) as schools are seeing declining enrollment believed to be fostered by high housing costs for families.

On the housing front, the NDP has only hinted at action against speculation and foreign money influencing land values by stating in the Throne

Speech that it will be “examining options to curb speculation.”

Activist group Housing Action for Local Taxpayers (HALT) decried the lack of initiative on the housing market.

“While other ministries have made quick progress fulfilling some of the campaign promises like ending tolls, increasing welfare rates, action on stopping Kinder Morgan, reassessing viability for Site C and ending the Grizzly hunt, there has been no action taken or information shared by the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Finance, and the Attorney General on housing, apart from ‘we are still reviewing the file,’” stated HALT, which calls on the province to work with Canada Revenue Agency to close capital gains and income tax loopholes.

Proposed Airport Zoning Regulations The Vancouver International Airport 2027 Master Plan includes a proposed new third (South) runway. While the proposed runway may not be constructed for quite some time, the Vancouver Airport Authority has notified the City of Richmond that the Vancouver Airport Authority has made an application to Transport Canada to adopt new Airport Zoning Regulations to protect the airspace for the potential future runway, which would include changes to permitted building heights and result in future noise impacts during operation. The Vancouver Airport Authority made its application on its own without any prior public consultation and without addressing any of the concerns expressed by the City.

Advise council ichmond City Council is looking to fill more than 75 volunteer positions available on 16 different advisory committees.

Residents interested in serving their community in a volunteer capacity may apply before the Friday, Sept. 22 deadline.

“There are many opportunities for the public to have an impact on local government through Richmond’s longstanding committees,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“Through volunteering one’s time and expertise on any of the city’s advisory bodies, valuable insight is given to addressing a variety of specific areas of civic importance such as the arts, culture, environment, agriculture, seniors, youth, and the economy.”

Those appointed to positions by city council would serve on the advisory body in a volunteer capacity – there is no remuneration for appointees.

Richmond’s mayor has requested a report on the history of duplex rentals and the reasons why duplex suites are exempted from a current bylaw, after a resident voiced her concerns at the council meeting Monday night.

Realtor Karen Rabinovitch owns a duplex in Steveston and had a tenant living in the suite downstairs for 23 years.

The tenant recently passed away and Rabinovitch spent $20,000 renovating the suite, with a plan to rent it out again. However, she was told by the city that the suite was illegal.

“I was shocked when city staff told me I was not allowed to have a suite in my place because it’s not a detached house,” Rabinovitch told the Richmond News.

“I have had it for so many years.

It’s a nice two-bedroom suite, my neighbours are fine with it, and it helps me pay my mortgage, I don’t see the problem having it.”

Rabinovitch’s case sparked discussions at the council meeting about

whether the city should allow such suites in duplexes.

Some councillors think it may be time to consider the option to help tackle the city’s affordable housing challenge.

During the meeting, Mayor Brodie requested city staff look into the history of duplexes and the reason why a duplex rental suite is not allowed in the first place.

For now, Rabinovitch was advised to go through a site-specific rezoning application and submit a rezoning report before further consideration takes place.

“It kind of put me back at where I started,” said Rabinovitch.

“To go through the whole rezoning process, I have to put up the signs, conduct the survey…it will cost me at least $4,000. And approval is not even guaranteed.”

She was told that it can take months for the report to come out.

Rabinovitch can wait in the hope that the bylaw will be changed, but her financial situation doesn’t allow her to let the suite sit empty.

“A practical solution for me is to remove the stove from the suite and rent the rooms to boarders who are not allowed to cook.”

ollowing closed-door meetings between councillors and legal counsel, the City of Richmond is publicly crying foul at the Vancouver Airport Authority’s decision to “unilaterally” go ahead with its submission to Transport Canada to rezone parts of central Richmond in preparation for a new runway.

The city contends the airport is putting the cart before the horse.

“There is no valid reason for pushing these changes through without due proper process, particularly given that the proposed runway is not anticipated to be built for decades,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a news release.

Last week, the city issued its news release — with several stated concerns — that was quickly countered by a release by the airport, which claims it was merely proceeding with the first steps in “protecting its future runway options” and that “this is the beginning of a robust, federally mandated process governed by Transport Canada, which includes a detailed consultation schedule.”

The authority said it “remains committed to timely and authentic community consultation as we strive to sustainably meet the

air travel needs of British Columbia.”

Transport Canada has the authority to amend Richmond’s Official Community Plan (OCP) to ensure safe flight paths beneath City Centre. This means building heights for developments under a new flight path could be further limited — something that runs contrary to the city’s goal of densifying City Centre for transitoriented development.

The city stated the changes could “negatively impact property owners who’ve made significant investments based on existing

policies.”

The city is in a difficult situation as it, and many councillors, often espouse the benefits of airport growth and yet they have pushed forward with building residential towers hundreds of metres away from an airport they know must expand to accommodate such development.

Coun. Alexa Loo, however, is challenging her colleagues, noting that while the city claims to support the “evolution of the airport,” she asks, “Where do you want them (the airport) to go?”

Loo said the proposal leaves many uncertainties. But, she said city council should be open to solutions if Transport Canada overrules the OCP. “If that is the plan, we as a city need to step back and say maybe we need to rethink the OCP. Maybe density goes further south of Granville along No. 3 Road?

The jobs are not insignificant for locals; businesses need to move goods and the airport brings in tourists, said Loo. The possible use of the third runway for loud takeoffs is also a concern for the city.

“Without full analysis of the noise and safety impacts of using the new runway for takeoffs, the impacts on the community and quality of life are unknown and thus unacceptable to the City,” stated the city, which claims the airport rejected its request to limit takeoffs except under special circumstances.

Council needs to reconsider Dear Editor, The B.C. Ministry of Agriculture’s Guide to Bylaw Development in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is clear about the biggest threat to farmland. It is residential encroachment. To reduce the threat, the guide says to divert urban housing to non-farming areas.

The guide also instructs local governments to succeed by calculating a house-size limit on ALR farmland to be no larger than the house-size limits in residential neighbourhoods.

Richmond staff, applying land use economics, calculated that limits as low as 300 square metres would address the threat to our farmland successfully while not harming the equity in farmer’s existing properties. (As a precaution, the B.C. guide sets an absolute upper limit of 500 square metres, but it would be a mistake to call that the guideline.).

Richmond council ignored all of this. They merely granted the wish of vocal ALR landholders and their hangers-on. They allowed mansions of up to 1,000 square metres.

Since this council decision in May, the asking price of ALR farmland in Richmond has soared to heights of $3.73 million per acre, based on recent listings.

This continued loss of farmland is the result of no foreign buyer tax on ALR, reduced taxes due to farm status, and a Richmond council allowing houses three times the size of residential house limits.

It is not too late to cancel the welcome.

If public safety is No.1, why Bring on distract with a blinking sign? no-fault

Dear Editor, At about 10 a.m. Thursday, while driving a family member to an urgent appointment at the UBC eye clinic, I noticed that northbound drivers, especially those in the HOV lane, had a distraction awaiting them as they merged into the freeway just before the tunnel: A sign blinking “Public Safety #1. New Bridge Needed.”

Who put it up? Surely, not the Corporation of Delta? But it sure looks like one of Delta’s mobile signs.

If “public safety is #1,” why erect a sign that’s blinking a message that’s irrelevant to the drivers’ task at hand: merging into a freeway just before a tunnel?

If “public safety is #1,” where’s the automated system that fines selfish drivers who don’t allow others to merge?

If “public safety is # 1,” where’s the automated system that catches the licence plates of those who change lanes dangerously and illegally while approaching or while driving through the tunnel?

If “public safety is #1,” why not ban heavy trucks from the tunnel during rush hours?

If “public safety is #1,” why did politicians cancel photo radar?

If “public safety is #1,” why don’t our politicians allow more red light cameras at intersections?

If “public safety is #1,” why has running stop signs and red lights become so common?

If “public safety is #1,” why have crosswalks become so unsafe?

Might it be that the “Public Safety #1. New Bridge Needed” sign belongs to Delta? It has no twin on the Richmond side, distracting drivers going south; Delta is lobbying for a new bridge; Richmond and the rest of Metro Vancouver’s members are lobbying against it. Which means that somebody — I hope it’s not Delta — is engaging in a distracting and dangerous form of campaigning.

It’s a political sign, folks, that has no regard for public safety even though it blinks: “Public Safety #1. New Bridge Needed.”

By the way, northbound freeway traffic stalled in Richmond, south of the Oak Street bridge; according to 730 AM Radio, all northbound arteries in Vancouver — Granville, Oak, and Cambie — were congested. If built, that new bridge might get us to the congestion a tad sooner.

If you really want to save money, transform ICBC into no-fault insurance. World-wide studies have shown that this reduces large and fraudulent claims.

One buys the limit one needs, and then, when an incident occurs, one collects from one’s own insurance.

Raising rates on good drivers is not the solution to ICBC’s financial woes. If you say the previous government looted the corporation, put the money back!

If you cannot manage ICBC as a Crown corporation, dissolve it and let the private insurance industry into B.C. Rate increases are a Band-Aid, come up with a real solution!

It seems Mayor Brodie is happy about the delay on the new bridge construction to replace the 58-year-old seismically vulnerable Massey tunnel. With a local government elec-

tion about 13 months away, the Mayor may want to review a recent Agnus Reid Global survey that notes 75 per cent of respondents in Metro Vancouver said they would like to see a higher-capacity bridge built to replace the aging tunnel. Further, 37 per cent of Richmond/Delta respondents “strongly supported” replacing the Massey tunnel with a bridge. If

that doesn’t encourage the Mayor to rethink his views, then this quote from the Delta-Optimist should: “The survey notes 65 per cent of respondents say the province should implement the existing plan, even if the majority of municipal governments (oppose) it” Keith Munro Richmond

ree government-funded English classes for new immigrants living in Richmond will double to address the growing needs of English learners.

After receiving funding from the provincial government, immigrant service S.U.C.C.E.S.S. will add 29 new free English classes to the 28 existing ones in Richmond.

The new capacity means an additional 500 students can be enrolled in English studies.

“English skills are key for immigrants to find jobs, make new friends, and integrate into society,” said Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. “We hope the added classes will reduce waiting times and provide opportunities for more immigrants to study English.”

Metro Vancouver has recently seen a large increase in the number of English program applicants.

The number of students on the waiting list in the Lower Mainland grew from an average of 500 to almost 2,000, and Richmond alone has over 500 applicants waiting to be enrolled.

The waiting time has also increased from the previous one to six months to up to nine months, according to Choo.

Ryan Drew, program director of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Immigrant Settlement and Integration Program, told the Richmond News that a lot of the demand comes from entry level and intermediate applicants.

“So I spend more time practicing and memorizing — more than two hours every day. Now I can communicate with people in the bank or supermarket.”

But some people don’t have the luxury of time. Drew said they often encounters students who want to register for a class but their work or day care conflicts with the schedules.

“Some people have to focus on earning an income or have very unpredictable work schedules. Committing to English classes may not be the best option at the time.

Student Natalia Polska is a mother of two from Ukraine. Her husband is working fulltime to support the family while Polska is taking English training.

“He is working very hard,” Polska said.

“I hope to go back to work after I finish my English studies, and maybe pursue a different career from the one I had in my home country.”

The school tries to address pressured circumstances by offering classes on Saturday combined with online courses.

Drew hopes the new classes will provide a bigger variety of schedules so that students who have to juggle both work and study can have more options.

In an ideal situation, it can take a student six months, doing four classes per week, to advance up to the next level.

The study is free until Level 8, which, according to Drew, is equivalent to the English level of an average Canadian.

Paramedic honoured Alan Campbell

A

new national award for leadership in paramedicine has been presented to a well-known former paramedic.

Richmond resident Clarke McGuire – an advanced life support (ALS) paramedic in B.C. and Richmond for 40 years – said he was both humbled and exhilarated to receive the Paramedic Association of Canada’s first ever Paramedicine Across Canada Expo (PACE) award.

Among McGuire’s former B.C. Emergency Health Service (BCEHS) colleagues lining up to congratulate McGuire were Gene Benoit and Ron Van Houghton, both of whom are paramedics in Richmond and were instrumental in submitting McGuire’s nomination for the award.

“I’ve known Clarke for more than 22 years and his achievements in paramedicine are voluminous,” said Benoit.

“He embodies everything that this inaugural PACE award of excellence for leadership and community building is all about.”

Among McGuire’s achievements is the leadership of Team BC at the annual Rallye Rejviz International Medical Rescue competitions in Europe, not only helping the team win top honours, but also for promoting B.C. and Canada’s paramedicine profession to international audiences.

McGuire is also known as the leading force in important changes made to the provincial and national building code laws that benefit

Those amendments in the 1990s mandated that building elevators be installed that would allow paramedics and their stretchers easier access.

He’s also influenced national safety standards and procedures, educating first responders about the dangers of high voltage electricity in the work place.

“I have a passion for this profession, and many friends who helped me along the way,” said McGuire, in an e-mail to BCEHS friends and colleagues.

“To be a paramedic is a noble profession with many risks. I was a lucky one, and I cherish my memories and colleagues.”

McGuire received the award last month in Quebec City during the Paramedic Association of Canada’s Expo 2017 meeting and trade show.

aking ownership of your own health care is a topic common among many people these days. But even when that happens some are left wanting more answers to why they are feeling the way they do.

Dr. Raj Jheeta, a longtime Richmond naturopath, has coined a phrase to characterize the situation.

“Are you sick of being sick?” he asks.

If you are and feel you’re not getting the information or care from traditional health care methods, perhaps naturopathy and its philosophy of preventative care is the route to go.

Traditional care today is based on reactive medicine, says Jheeta who has been practicing locally since 1988, meaning that you look for a disease and respond to it.

“Most diagnosis in the traditional system is done the same way,” Jheeta says. “If there is an illness present, you treat or manage it.

“We grew up with that as a good philosophy for medicine,” he adds. “Go see the doctor once a year and make sure nothing is wrong

with you.”

While that can be a powerful and effective process, what naturopaths do differently is evaluate a person to see exactly how healthy they are instead of how sick they are.

“It seems simplistic, but it’s quite divergent in that traditional medicine is designed to see how sick you are and what should be done about it,” Jheeta says. “We’re trying to change Ycd ihi[d^dZZ Y] Ydifc \d]\`d c]h Y] j^e ]XY how healthy they are so they can potentially prevent a disease process from happening.”

The quest to help patients with their conditions prompted Jheeta to write a book called The doctor of the future is here. Published last year, he says it forms part of his desire to teach people accountability and be engaged in their health care.

“We’re so conditioned to be engaged in so many other aspects of our lives, such as j^i^fdg [di` dZYiYdg a^WdZYments and retirement, or with children and their extracurricular activities,” he says. “But when it comes to health care, we’re not that well engaged in

Mysterious event brews in Richmond Daisy Xiong

hat do you do when you love mystery books?

For long-time Richmondite Linda McNab, the answer is to bring the West Coast’s largest mystery convention to Canada for the first time.

Their first event — which includes a book reading by award-winning author and the chair of Crime Writers of Canada Cathy Ace — will take place Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Richmond Library and Cultural Centre.

“Cathy will talk about how her life has changed since her first novel was published, and the role the convention plays in her world,” explained McNab, a mystery book fan for most of her life.

She and her friend discovered the five-day mystery book convention Left Coast Crime in California in 2014.

“Hundreds of book lovers and writers got together to share their thoughts, it was an amazing experience,” said

McNab. Her favourite part was the breakfast section when all new authors had one minute to introduce their new books.

Since then, McNab has been attending the event every year all over the U.S., until one day she came up with the idea of bringing it home.

“It’s a great opportunity for readers to explore new books and talk to the authors they like; for new writers, it’s

a chance to get their books publicity.”

McNab said renowned author Dan Brown was at one of the conventions before he became famous.

Left Coast Crime Convention Vancouver will be hosted in the spring of 2019 with more than 600 expected to attend.

“Vancouver is so beautiful, people will enjoy the city as well as the convention,” McNab said.

The diaries of a Chinese student...

...a group pupils from China spent the summer living and learning in Richmond; here are some of their observations during their stay

By Sue (Sirui) Chen, from Shanghai JinZhou Primary School: I picked up my luggage and said goodbye to my parents. This was the first time for me to travel without my parents. I tried to imagine the wonderful time I was going to have, so that I would not miss my parents too much.

As I boarded my flight, my heart soared high towards the bright blue sky. Will I be able to live independently without my parents? Will I mess up? Many questions began to form in my mind as I drifted off and fell asleep.

When I first landed in Richmond, I complained about everything. The weather was too dry and the food tasted weird. I missed China. After a while, I got used to the Canadian lifestyle and learned to appreciate everything here.

Canadians are always smiley, especially in the neighbourhood where the school is located in Richmond. Everyone is so friendly, respectful and gentle. Because my home-stay family has been so generous and kind to me, I feel like I have known them for years.

Canadian education is quite different.

Academics is important, but so is the cultivation of character, integrity, ethics and morality.

Of all the trips we took, the journey up to Whistler Mountain is the most unforgettable.

As we took the gondola up to the mountain peak, I saw the beautiful mountain clothed

in a delicate layer of white dress reflecting over the greenish- blue lakes. It was simply phenomenal. I caught it all on my phone!

My summer learning in Richmond will soon come to an end, but I will not forget this experience any time soon.

The biggest challenge that I overcame during my trip in Canada is my fear of darkness and being alone at night. I had never slept alone by myself. However, this trip, even though I got sick, I did not wake my home-stay parents. Instead, I got up, gathered my courage, and I overcame my fear of darkness by sleeping by myself and going to the washroom in the middle of the night by myself. This may seem like a small chal-

lenge to others, but to me it was a victorious moment.

I am so glad I came to Canada. I will, for sure, miss everyone here.

I really love Richmond. It is a city that is so close to nature, and yet so vibrant with different local restaurants and shops.

Canada is also a modern country. When I visit Richmond, I can see tall buildings everywhere, and the lights in the city shine brightly at night. Richmond has warm weather and it always seems sunny.

In Canada, the classification of garbage is very detailed. When I went to Richmond Centre, there were many different bins in place for people to sort their garbage so they could reduce waste production.

Precisely because of this way of dealing with waste, the Canadian environment remains clean.

The classification of rubbish is very clear.

People finish their meal and finish drinking water, and consciously throw away their bottles and lunch boxes in the appropriate bins. Even in Canadian families, household waste is classified. My trip to Canada and what I learned from my school in Richmond have made me realize that I want to protect the environment.

The correct methods must be adopted. Only in this way can we protect the natural environment.

According to Howard Jampolsky — organizer of the Richmond run — more people are set to turn out than in previous years, raising more money for cancer research in the process.

Around 400 people took to the West Dyke last year to walk and/or run the 1K, 2K or 10K, with millions of dollars raised across Canada (almost $20,000 in Richmond) for the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).

“One thing people should note is that the money we raise for the TFRI is translated into tangible gains in treatments that have improved the lives and extended the lives of Canadians,” Jampolsky told the Richmond News.

Once more, donations are welcome at Sunday morning’s 9 a.m. registration, but “not necessary,” Jampolsky added.

Jampolsky said that, although the event has a healthy number of volunteers signed up, they “could always do with more help.”

“If someone is willing and interested, there is always something that needs to be done,” he said.

“Get in touch with us beforehand or just come along on the day.”

And while some may think it’s getting harder each year to rally people around the

cause, Jampolsky said he believes it’s actually getting easier. “Every year, we learn something new and apply it the following year,” he said.

“And we’re raising more money each year, which is obviously great.

“The Terry Fox Run wouldn’t happen each year in Richmond without our residents’ commitment to continue Terry’s dream to find a cure for cancer.”

he Richmond Minor Hockey Association ushered in the 2017-18 season with an Opening Day celebration that included honouring three of its most notable alumni.

A special ceremony unveiled the framed jerseys of Vancouver Canucks defenceman Troy Stecher, along with NHL officials Kelly Sutherland and Trevor Hanson. They will permanently be on display at the Richmond Ice Centre. All three came through RMHA as young players and referees.

Stecher was on hand for the presentation that included Richmond councillors Bill McNulty and Ken Johnson, along with Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey chair Lynne Kiang.

“It’s special. It’s my grassroots,” said the 23-year-old as he heads off to his second NHL training camp this week. “This is the arena where I grew up and attended many mornings with my father and my mom. “It’s great to be recognized, but it’s not about me but about the association and all the effort parents have put in to make this work for the kids.

“I have lots of great memories here with lots of friends. There were a lot of special people and a lot of them are still here. It’s tremendous to see the work they are still putting in. I’m happy to come back here, show my face and show my

support to the kids. Having them here is pretty special too. I hope I can be a role model to them.”

Stecher’s final year of playing for Richmond Minor was when he was 14.

That year he had a leading role in the Blues reaching the provincial Bantam A1 championship game under head coach Ron Popoff. He moved to play a season of major midget with the Greater Vancouver Canadians then jumped to the B.C. Hockey League with Penticton when he was just 16. His time in junior “A” paved the way for a full-ride scholarship offer to the University of North Dakota.

“We made the (Bantam) provincials that year and lost in the final. There were a lot of great players on that team and the coaching staff too,” continued Stecher. “Earlier on in intro and tyke, it was creating that bond and relationship with my dad and him coaching me. Those are the two things that really stand out.”

The alumni tribute had been on RMHA president Carolyn Hart’s wish list for “years.”

It all finally came together and even involved some last minute phone calls to Stecher’s mom Tracey to conclude the biographies that are included with the framed jerseys.

“We are very very proud of all three of them,” said Hart. “Just look at this young man (Stecher) over there with our young players. What a personality.

“I have been following his career through Pent-

icton and North Dakota. I feel I have a connection with him even though today was the first time I have met him.”

Sutherland, 46, is considered one of the top referees in the world. Not only has he worked numerous Stanley Cup finals but also was selected for the gold medal game at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Hanson, 33, was hired by the NHL in 2012 after officiating in the PJHL, BCHL, WHL and AHL. He was also an accomplished player, reaching the BCHL with Surrey before focusing full-time on officiating.

Richmond Minor begins the new season with growth in registration thanks to its tireless work with its Intro to Hockey, Hockey 1 and First Shift programs that is bringing new families into Canada’s favourite winter sport.

“To me, to build a strong organization in terms of rep you need to have an amazing group of players from all walks of life,” explained Hart. “We are welcoming 38 families to Hockey One, 53 families to Intro to Hockey and 45 to First Shift.

“Maybe for some, hockey has been financially out of reach and we have made that dream possible. We have outfitted 19 kids here today. These families will stop me in the hallway and express their gratitude repeatedly. It’s what makes the (volunteer) job worthwhile. I also have tremendous support from the board.”

Sockeyes win season opener T

he Richmond Sockeyes didn’t waste anytime in showing what their firepower was capable of under new head coach Steve Robinson.

Seemingly on their way to a frustrating opening night loss, the Sockeyes produced three unanswered goals in the final period then completed the comeback in overtime for a thrilling 6-5 home ice win over the North Vancouver Wolf Pack.

Richmond had dominated much of the territorial play for the opening 40 minutes, but it was the Wolf Pack that managed the only two goals of the second period to build up a 5-2 lead, despite being outshot 13-7.

Captain Tyler Andrews ignited the comeback with a pair of tallies just 62 seconds apart. He then set-up Nicolas Bizzutto for the equalizer with 4:42 remaining.

The two combined again to conclude the evening when Bizzutto finished off an Andrews feed. The 19-yearold had been acquired just days earlier from Mission for future considerations and looked right at home playing with Andrews. The pair
