n Monday morning, Richmond residents flooded into the city’s public parks and buried their heads in empty cereal boxes wrapped in tin foil.

Others viewed 86 per cent of the total solar eclipse with special sunglasses or through makeshift eclipse viewers.

At Garry Point Park, about 200 people witnessed the celestial event off the shores of the Fraser River, as Steveston fell under a noticeable light shade for about five minutes.

“We weren’t expecting it to be that dark. But when we took off our sunglasses it was extremely different,” explained Gabriel Santiago, 17, a Hugh Boyd secondary student, 19, who came to the park with brother David Santiago to view the eclipse.

The Santiago brothers came fully prepared with solar eclipse glasses as well as a cut-out cereal box, which reflected the eclipse via a pinhole.

“The cereal box didn’t work too well,” said David.

‘Worst attack’ on farmland since ‘73 GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

oun. Harold Steves says a report by the Vancouver Sun of apparent illegal activity occurring in a mega mansion on Richmond farmland is symptomatic of the “worst attack” on local agriculture since the 1973 establishment of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

A failure, said Steves, in provincial and municipal policy to restrict home sizes, a lack of foreign home buyers’ tax on ALR land in Metro Vancouver and continued market pressures to convert farmland into industrial properties have combined to make farming in the region economically unviable.

Homes over 10,000-square-feet, and several over 20,000-square-feet, have been regularly built for the past decade in Richmond’s ALR. Steves contends farming is last on many new owners’ minds.

Last week, the Sun reported on a civil forfeiture action filed June 29 in B.C. Supreme Court that alleges a Richmond ALR property, at 8880 Sidaway Road, “is an instrument and proceeds of unlawful activity,” and “has been used to engage in crimes,” including “laundering the proceeds of unlawful activity.”

The claim by The B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office exposes alleged nefarious activity and shines a light on serious loopholes in real estate regulations that propel speculation.

Defendant Wen Feng purchased the twoacre property in October 2015 for $4.4 million, but is only listed as the nominee. The beneficial owner is said to be her brother and co-defendent Lap San Peter Pang.

Feng’s response says that she leased the property to a group called the Vancouver

International Chinese Association, with the understanding this was a group formed

by Chinese business people “to facilitate networking and international business” and they would use the property “to hold functions and meetings.”

Feng’s Vancouver lawyer did not respond to Postmedia’s request for comment on the case, and no response has been filed by Lap San Peter Pang.

It was in December 2015 that the B.C. Lottery Corporation was informed the mansion, which is now listed for close to $6 million, was operating as an illegal casino, the B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office claim alleges.

In April 2016, Richmond RCMP entered the mansion in response to an anonymous call, the claim states, “that someone was being held hostage at gunpoint inside the residence.”

Police found gaming tables and 15 people involved in gambling, a large amount of casino chips, playing cards, a money counter, and “an elaborate video surveillance system,” mounted above the gambling tables, the claim alleges.

Next, in May 2017, police responded to reports of a person admitted to Richmond Hospital who had been stabbed at the property, the claim alleges. Inside the mansion, police found “25 individuals, dancing and drinking” and “blood soaked paper towels in a kitchen garbage can.”

The claim states Pang was living in only one room equipped with a small hotplate, according to police.

Steves said the court filings were a “shocker” and to date he had only been told rumours of illegal hotels and casinos operating in mega mansions.

Last April, Steves argued to limit house sizes on farmland to about 5,000-squarefeet — per non-enforceable provincial guidelines — but city council proceeded to

set limits of close to 11,000-square-feet.

Realtor Dale Badh was the home’s listing agent in 2015 and recently opposed council’s new restrictions, instead arguing that the City of Richmond and police ought to take long-standing complaints — such as his own — about illegal hotels, casinos and brothels more seriously.

“When a house is vacant in daytime and it comes alive in the evening, you know there’s something there,” Badh told The News on Tuesday.

Badh, an east Richmond resident, said South Asian farmers requiring multi-generational homes have unfairly been caught in the crosshairs.

Badh opposed blanket house size restrictions that would effectively curtail farmland

owners’ soaring land values.

According to an independent ALR market report to council last April by Site Economics Ltd., if house sizes were restricted to about 4,000-square-feet, “it is expected that ALR buying activity and speculation would decrease significantly, as the unique appeal of the ALR lands would be gone...”

The report noted Richmond farmland is being sold at $641,991 an acre on average.

Viable farmland should cost about $50,000, according to agriculture experts.

Steves said the recent listing of 13240 Steveston Highway, a 103-acre plot of farmland, for $55 million is indicative of runaway land values. The listing cites improved highway access as a benefit to ownership.

U

niversity of B.C. linguist Dr. Bonny Norton says multilingualism in Canada is alive and well, and something that Canadians value and embrace as a virtue.

However, new immigrants who cannot converse in either of Canada’s official languages are missing out on important community and national conversations.

In Richmond, this concern is more pronounced than in any other city in Canada, as 11.2 per cent of all residents, according to the 2017 census, cannot speak English nor French.

Over the past five years, the number of

people who speak neither English nor French has risen 12 per cent, from 19,740 to 22,110. In 2006, the overall share in population was 8.8 per cent.

In the past 10 years, 6,757 new residents (28 per n Dr. Bonny Norton cent of the city’s population growth) cannot converse in English or French.

“I think it’s a loss for these new Canadians.

My concern is they’re missing out on so much that is rich in Canadian society,” said

Norton. “We all need to be able to contribute and hear the conversation, so it works both ways. It is a loss if people are outside the dominant conversation,” said Norton.

Throughout her career researching identity and language learning, Norton has found that not understanding an official language is not a result of unwillingness. Quite the contrary.

“Most people do want to speak English or French. We have to distinguish between the opportunity to learn and the desire,” said Norton.

Furthermore, there may be “a critical mass of people in a community where people are able to function adequately without English or French,” resulting in the ability to live without engaging in the broader community.

In Richmond, the concentration of Chinese-speaking businesses has been a point of contention.

Many non-Chinese speaking residents feel excluded. Conversely, advocates in the Chinese community have also expressed concerns about new residents not branching out into the broader community.

Norton said “valuing diversity while maintaining the sense of our institutions,” which are “grounded by English and French” is the “lovely compromise” of Canadians, 20 per cent of whom speak more than one language at home.

In Canada, 1.8 per cent of people cannot speak English or French. In B.C. the rate jumps to 3.3 per cent.

One man was creative enough to use his own hand by creating a fist only to leave a small hole in order to view the moon’s crescent reflected on the ground.

Up and down the West Dyke Trail, people stationed themselves for prime viewing locations.

At the peak of the eclipse, at 10:21 a.m., there was a slightly noticeable shade.

Maggie Lukban, a community programmer at Richmond Public Library, said she noticed a chill in the air, too.

Lukban helped organize a public viewing of the eclipse — which was viewed in its totality in Oregon — at the Brighouse plaza.

“You could tell when the moon went over the sun; it got dark and it got cool, too,” said Lukban.

There, members of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University physics department, including astronomers, were on hand to provide information and commentary on the event to about 300 people, said Lukban.

Astronomers used large telescopes to project the eclipse onto large white

boards. Meanwhile, the library set up an outdoor screening of NASA’s live feed.

Indoors, people could view the eclipse on TV. One man got creative and brought a welding mask, added Lukban.

As an added bonus, children were shown models of planets moving

around the sun and book collections on space.

Monday’s partial, solar eclipse was the closest Richmond has come to a total solar eclipse since Feb. 26, 1979, when southern Washington State experienced a total eclipse.

According to TimeAndDate.com, on Oct. 23, 2023, Richmond will see a

partial, annular solar eclipse, whereby the moon doesn’t fully cover the sun, but creates a ring of fire effect as it passes by.

That eclipse’s trajectory will be similar to Monday’s, in that it will be fully visible from Oregon.

On Aug. 22, 2044, Richmond will see a similar portion of a total eclipse, which will be seen in its entirety in Edmonton and Calgary.

On March 13, 2025, Richmond will see a total lunar eclipse, also called a blood moon.

Astrophysicist and director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson was remindful this week, via Twitter, that total solar eclipses are not rare.

They “occur somewhere on Earth every two years, or so. So just calm yourself when people tell you they’re rare,” quipped Tyson.

Tyson tweeted during the event: “The divided United States of America will unite today, sharing a cosmic event predicted by the methods and tools of science.”

Meanwhile, for a brief moment during the eclipse, President Donald Trump was caught looking up at the sun without any protective glasses — which he eventually put on for a photo opp.

Boy’s breakthrough inspires book Busy mom marks son’s milestone, helps others Paula Carlson Contributor

ichmond’s Kaye Liao Banez is a psychologist, vocational educator, sales and marketing specialist, mental health advocate and mother of two small children, one of whom has autism.

You would think she has enough to keep her busy. But Banez also aims to help others.

So when her five-year-old son Lazarus reached a significant milestone in January of this year, she wanted to do something special.

She wrote a book.

A

book about Chinese culture in Canada could help people better understand the issues in places such as Richmond, according to its author.

Canada’s Chinese Gene was released this summer to celebrate the history of Chinese Canadians and the contributions they have made to the founding of the country.

The main author, Guo Ding — who is also a TV producer for Omni Mandarin — said that by looking at the history, people can better understand and address the challenges faced nowadays, especially in a multicultural city such as Richmond.

The book reviewed the history of Chinese Canadians from 150 years ago, and demonstrated the contributions made in culture, economics and politics.

Ding argues that Chinese-Canadians should be recognized as nation builders, instead of immigrants “coming from the outside.”

“Chinese-Canadians were there over 150 years ago and Chinese ancestors played a key role in building the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was the foundation of the federation.

They were not just cheap labourers, but na-

tion builders,” said Ding.

Ding hopes that by understanding the historical contribution of Chinese to the nation’s establishment, Chinese-Canadians will have a deeper connection to Canada and better realize the responsibilities they have to it.

“When you see yourself as a guest, it’s easier to come here and take advantage of the place, and leave,” Ding said.

“But if you realize that your ancestors worked so hard to help build the country to make it how it is now, that they fought for the right you are now enjoying, you will feel attached to this place, treasure your rights, and want to make the country a better place.”

Ding suggested that Chinese Canadians need not build a 10,000-square-feet house on farmland, just because the law allows.

“Can you share some of the fortunes you made with the vulnerable people in the society? Yes you can, because (Canada) is your home, too,” he added.

Ding sums up the role of the Chinese in Canada by referencing the Chinese gene.

“I chose the term ‘Chinese gene’ because Canada was a multicultural country from the establishment of the country and there are many different genes in its blood, including the Chinese gene,” said Ding.

He believes the understanding that Chinese people have been a part of the Canadian

family throughout history is very important for Chinese and non-Chinese cooperation today.

“When someone in your family does something wrong, you point it out and help him correct the mistakes, instead of asking him to leave the family,” Ding said.

“Similarly, when we have problems in society, like housing affordability issues, we should focus on the problem itself, like fixing the law, instead of seeing it as a racial issue and creating conflicts between ethnicities.”

Ding said he has a vision for Richmond to become a model of a multicultural city in the world, not for one or two ethnicities, but for all of them.

To achieve that, he thinks mutual under-

standing and consideration of each other is key, and history is one way to help foster this solidarity.

“Let’s take the Chinese language sign for an example. Some business owners do it because their language ability is not enough to serve non-Chinese customers,” said Ding.

“They don’t have bad intentions to exclude anybody. It’s just a practical way to do business.

“But for the business owners, it will be nice to add English to consider the feelings of the residents that don’t understand Chinese. It’s just a nice thing to do, isn’t it?”

Ding said he hopes, one day, that Richmond will see more multicultural symbols, other than restaurants, such as landmarks, museums and theatres to showcase the beauty of the city’s diversity.

The book will be available in English by the end of the year.

RCMP hunt driver after Mountie hit

ichmond Mounties are on the hunt for a dangerous driver after one of their own was struck during a distracted driving blitz.

Shortly after 3:30 pm on Monday, officers from the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) were conducting distracted driving enforcement along the No. 3 Road corridor.

One of the officers initiated a vehicle stop near the area of No. 3 Road and Alderbridge Way, after the driver of a northbound travelling, brown 2005 Audi 4-door was spotted, allegedly, using a mobile device while driving.

The Audi stopped but abruptly turned and headed eastbound along Alderbridge Way, striking an officer. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital via an ambulance.

The Audi then collided with a police vehicle near Alderbridge Way and Shell Road after attempts were made to stop it.

It then collided with second vehicle driven by a civilian. The Audi was last seen travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Garden City Road towards Sea Island Way. The police vehicle sustained substantial damage while the civilian vehicle sus-

tained minor damage.

The badly-damaged Audi was later found abandoned in the 7000 block of Heather Street in Vancouver around 10:30 p.m. with the help of the Vancouver Police Department. The vehicle is currently being examined by Lower Mainland District Forensic Identification Service and Richmond RCMP has identified a potential suspect.

Black market story hit spot

Dear Editor, Re: “Black market comes at a cost,” Voices column, Aug. 11.

Your column was spot on.

If we keep allowing unlicensed food markets to grow, we are eventually going to have a much bigger problem than anyone can imagine.

Besides the fact that no taxes are being paid, there is no food inspection being done, which could potentially lead to hepatitis or other illnesses being caught and spread throughout the Metro Vancouver region.

Farmland assault goes unabated Dear Editor, City council appears to be oblivious to the continuing crisis in Richmond regarding mansions on farmland.

The latest incident is the widely reported B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office attempted seizure of a Richmond farmland mansion for alleged money laundering, kidnapping and violent crime.

This is just one of the ramifications of the decision of our council (Couns. Day and Steves were the sole opponents) to

reject their own city staff report, and the independent report of Richard Wosney, which recommended a maximum ALR “farmhouse” of 5,400 square feet (the 13,000-sq.-ft. home in question is unoccupied, but is used to “facilitate international Chinese business,” according to its owner and was an investment that is now for sale for $6 million).

Under pressure from developers, real estate agents, and a couple of lobby groups repre-

senting a small group of farmers with interests in mansions for “cultural” reasons, council “compromised” with an allowance of almost 11,000 square feet.

Of course, this was not a compromise but a concession to several special interests.

Most councillors appeared to reject their duty to be stewards of Richmond farmland in favour of short-term electability.

The purchase of farmland for the building of mansions for

wealth and speculation — both foreign and domestic — has gone on unabated.

Certainly, nobody is buying farmland at up to $1 million an acre to grow strawberries.

Council will shortly review their short-sighted decision.

The citizens of Richmond must make our mayor and council accountable for the continued assault on our farmland.

Hydro apologizes 2nd look at bridge Dear Editor, We want to apologize to our customers in Richmond who have experienced an unusually high number of power outages over the past couple of weeks.

While many of these outages have been a result of birds contacting our equipment, we’ve conducted a thorough inspection of our lines and our engineering department

has identified some ways we can improve service reliability in the area.

As a result, we are in the process of upgrading some of our equipment and reconfiguring our system to reduce power outages.

Linda McPhail, chair of Richmond city council’s planning committee, says her support for a laneway housing policy in Burkeville hinges on the neighbourhood agreeing to one, following public consultation — an important distinction The News did not make in an article last Friday.

Five years ago, Burkeville residents “expressed several valid concerns — size and form of coach houses, traffic, condition and size of lanes, to name a few,” said McPhail on Monday.

“I would like to hear from residents today and from City staff to see if the same concerns still exist and what can be done to mitigate concerns. When all concerns are addressed and the community is on board, I believe that coach houses could be successful in Burkeville,” McPhail said.

Dear Editor, A July 10 Delta council report states a new tunnel would cost more than a bridge. The information is provided by an engineering company which has vested interests in the Christy Clark bridge project.

No cost analysis is provided. The report claims that the option of a tunnel upgrade and second tube is not possible and any information about that possibility is misinformation. This is deceitful, as the B.C. Liberal government did not credibly explore all options to address traffic congestion at the George Massey Tunnel.

the Port of Vancouver and vested interests that made it clear they wanted the tunnel removed to allow larger vessels up the river to transport LNG, jet fuel, coal and containers.

So the new NDP government has inherited an over-priced, over-sized project that was forced on the public.

Let’s hope the NDP will apply due process and examine all options.

Let’s hope the NDP will take immediate steps to improve visibility in the tunnel, add more buses and put restrictions on trucks during rush hour.

eifeng Yuan gets up every day at 7 a.m.

As the founder of the Richmond Wellness Club, Yuan then heads off to Richmond Centre to teach hundreds of people how to do exercise from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

He’s done the same thing every morning for the last 25 years and has helped thousands of people over almost three decades become healthier through exercise.

Yuan is a 98-year-old Richmond senior.

His shopping mall group, which on any given day can number between 100 and 200, finish its routine before the mall opens.

After that, he and some members get a cup of tea or coffee at the food court in the mall and chat before heading back home.

The Richmond News met with Yuan at his apartment, on Saba Road in the shadow of the mall, after the morning routine.

“Exercise makes you happy, and happiness is the key to a healthy and long life,” Yuan said.

“Seniors need to go out to communicate with people, make friends and do activities.”

When Yuan first came to Canada, he had no idea that one day he would create a com-

munity for hundreds of seniors, allowing them to make friends and have a healthier lifestyle.

Before coming to Canada, Yuan lived in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Born in Haimen City, he worked in Shanghai until he was 30, and lived through the Sino-Japanese war.

“Our factory was bombed by the Japanese, and I could see bodies on the street,” Yuan recalled.

“We hid at the English settlement and I could see fires from the war by the river from the top floor.”

Afraid of civil war, Yuan’s boss relocated the factory from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 1948.

He then moved with his boss and worked there until 1981, before coming to Canada and Richmond with his son.

By that time, the Hong Kong manufacturing industry was fading and Yuan’s factory was sold to a real estate developer.

“I didn’t know what to do after I came here, so I went to a park to practise tai chi,” said Yuan.

“I learned tai chi from a master when I was working in Hong Kong.

“Then someone saw me practising and recommended me to teach tai chi in a community centre. Then I became a tai chi teacher and gave two classes every week.”

During this time, Yuan also learned luk tung kuen (LTK), a type of body exercise, while

“After I came back, some friends asked me to teach them the exercises,” said Yuan.

“So I started free classes on open grounds every day in the morning. The class grew from just over 10 people to over 50.”

In 1992, Yuan and his students gave a performance at Richmond Centre and, from then on, were invited to do exercises in the centre.

hey’re back in town and, by all accounts, members of the public are making the most of the random pianos scattered around Richmond.

For the eighth summer in a row, “Pianos On the Street” has dropped off five pianos in open air settings to encourage the public to play music in Richmond.

The Richmond Cultural Centre, Britannia Shipyards, Terra Nova Park, Cambie

Community Centre and Richmond Nature Park are this year’s selected locations for the pianos.

The pianos used in the program – which aims to share the passion of music and to “inspire the community to express themselves through playing of the piano” are curated throughout the year and are, reportedly, heirloom quality.

According to the program organizers, the pianos are then carefully tuned to maintain the highest performance standards. More than 30 are on the streets right now across the Lower Mainland.

M

embers of the Rotary Club of Richmond are aiming to raise thousands of dollars for victims of B.C. wildfires when they host a warehouse sale of wicker and rattan furniture this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26-27.

Foundation chair Dean Hsieh said the club was gifted the furniture by a member and it’s stacked several metres high in a warehouse on Cedarbridge Way, awaiting the cash sale.

“Rotary is always serving for the good of the community. These people need our help and it’s really just for the good of the

community,” said Hsieh.

Much of the furniture came from Hong Kong. It has a total retail value of $90,000 and will be sold for 80 per cent off.

Most of the proceeds will go to wildfire victims, by way of rotary clubs in the Interior.

Some money will go to local endeavours the Richmond club is already taking part in.

The sale takes place at the back of the building at 5751 Cedarbridge Way, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. and Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. Furniture is sold as is and sales are final.

he Gateway Theatre Pacific Festival is back next week with one familiar play and one new one ! both of which are bound to spark great debate and introspection for Richmond residents pondering their place in the vast stage known as Earth.

“Both plays have received a lot of awards. It’s an honour to bring them to Gateway,” said festival director Esther Ho. The festival bills itself as “a showcase of world-class contemporary theatre from Hong Kong and Canada.”

It is intended to provide “a window to another world,” as it deepens connections between this city and the Far East, where many new residents come from.

The two plays, conducted in Cantonese, with English and simplified Chinese surtitles, are produced by Sky High Productions Ltd. “We carefully chose two famous stage dramas both adopted from real stories that will bring tears and laughter to everyone. Together, we can let stage drama culture touch many more lives,” noted Sky High online at GatewayTheatre.com.

Ho told the Richmond News she is particularly excited about the play Travel with Mum, inspired by the emotional story of a man who spent all his life with his mother in a Chinese village until he reached 74 years of age and she turned 99. Then, the two embarked on a 900-day journey to Tibet, spanning 30,000 kilometres.

“It’s a true story and touches many hearts. That’s why I picked it up,” explained Ho. The story should also appeal to families and seniors, said Ho. “It talks about philosophy and insight to facing life issues. It shows nothing is impossible; just don’t sit down and regret you didn’t do anything and take action with no regret,” said Ho.

The play uses masks, which is a unique twist for most Chinese plays. It is also acted out on a stage with sand to present different dimensions of acting, according to Ho. The mom is played by famous Hong Kong actress Ngai Yee Shan Jo and features folksy music.

Meanwhile, Tuesdays with Morrie will also play at the festival for a second year.

The play chronicles an accomplished journalist who reunites with an old college professor battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The two embark on a meaning-of-life quest. Artistic director Ko Tin Lung takes on the role of Professor Morrie while selfdirecting.

Tuesdays with Morrie plays Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. Travel with Mum plays Sept. 15-16 at 8 p.m. Shows are 2.5 and two-hours long, respectively. Each show costs $62 or combined they cost $105.

ithout a doubt, the best gift retirement has given me is the time to explore and embrace my spirituality and religion.

I have acquired a full-on attitude of gratitude, thanks to the studying and learning I’ve done in the past 19 months.

I know that not everyone is wired this way, or even interested in pursuing spirituality and religion.

To tell you the truth, it came as a bit of a surprise to me, too. Especially having come from a non-religious background. But here I am.

I recently returned from a national religious retreat, and came home a better version of myself.

I’m all about exploring more than just what’s in front of me, and that’s an enormous gift. Like someone once told me: “Just because you can’t see around a corner, doesn’t mean that there isn’t something there.”

It all hinges on faith, trust and commitment: The spiritual trifecta.

Over the course of six days, I attended 30 lectures, given by world-class speakers.

I attended sessions on: The art of really listening; facing challenges the healthy way; the power of prayer; souls and the afterlife; the future of religion in the 21st century; legal dilemmas and how religion approaches them; why challenges are placed in our path and how to handle them; the respon-

sibilities that go along with having free will; how to see divine providence in our lives every day; seizing life’s moments with openness and gratitude; the intersection of feminism and religion in 2017; the ‘positivity bias,’ and more.

So, what did I learn? Here are just a few nuggets I came away with: We need to listen not only with our ears, but with our eyes and our heart, in order to empathize; How we deal with challenges is what defines us; Our higher power gives us what we need, when “he” believes we need it; No prayer is ignored, but the response is not always in the form we expect; When bad things happen to us, it enables us to discover a strength we never knew we had; Faith is not a pill we swallow. Faith is a muscle we use; When you live a life with purpose, happiness will find you.

The retreat was far more meaningful than, say, spending 14 days at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. Since retirement is seen as one big R&R event, why not fill it with quality stuff instead of fluff?

Let learning surprise and delight you, and fill you up where you had empty spaces before.

Nothing can give our lives meaning quite like discovering our purpose. With teachers aplenty, and nothing but time, why not answer the call with an open heart and mind?

ardaws Aimaq can see the finish line to his dream of playing basketball at the NCAA Division One level and it happens to be on the other side of the continent.

The former 6-foot-10 StevestonLondon Shark standout leaves this weekend for Bridgton Academy in Maine where he will spend the coming season playing in the New England Preparatory Athletic Council (NEPSAC) AAA League. The basketball program at the all-boys school has a rich tradition of developing college-ready players under longtime coach Whit Lesure. Last year’s roster featured talent from eight different states.

The decision to head east has been part of an extensive and, often exhausting, process for one of the most dominant players to come out of Richmond in recent memory.

Aimaq enjoyed a pair of outstanding seasons playing in the “Shark Tank” at Steveston-London, leading the school to a second place finish at the B.C. AAA Championships in 2016. He followed that up by averaging over 27 points and 18 rebounds in his Grade 12 year — earning his second straight Lower Mainland Tournament MVP award, on top of city honours as well.

Coupled with another impressive season at the U.S. based AAU level with AthElite, there was interest from a whopping 22 programs, including six NCAA Division One schools. Yet, there needed to be more convincing to produce the full-ride offers. It meant a change of plans, spending a year playing at the prep level and establishing himself as an attractive 2018 recruit.

■ After an outstanding high school career with the StevestonLondon Sharks, 2017 Richmond and Lower Mainland MVP Fardaws Aimaq is heading to Bridgton Academy in Maine to play in one of the top prep lesgues in North America.

“It basically comes down to wanting to see Fardaws prove he can play at that next level. That means going to one of the best prep leagues in North America,” explained Steveston-London coach Mike Stoneburgh. “Unfortunately you just don’t get that kind of exposure here.

He is going to a program that has a reputation of sending guys off to Division One.” Plenty of schools will be paying attention to Aimaq’s progress at Bridgton.

He is slated to make an official visit to Mercer University in Georgia Sept.

22. A trip to Radford University in Virginia will follow soon after. Other programs to show interest include West Coast destinations Pepper-

dine, Washington State and San Francisco. It was the latter school’s coach — Kyle Smith — who recommended Aimaq to Bridgton.

“Everything has been going down for the last six months, right from my high school to my AAU season,” said Aimaq. “This is about getting more schools on the radar and working towards playing at the NCAA Division One level. “It’s definitely a long ways from home but I’m excited and it’s always been easy for me to adapt to a new situation. I’m just grateful for Mike and the people at AthElite who have helped me through this whole process.”

Besides working on his game playing in tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest this past

spring, Aimaq has also taken the time to study NESPAC AAA games on YouTube to see what he will be up against.

“From what I can see it is a much more physical game and they let a lot of stuff go compared to up here which is fine with me,” he laughed.

“Just watching the games, the big guys have to play through contact but have the opportunity to be more aggressive at the offence and defence ends. That’s definitely more my game.”

He will begin training soon after his arrival in Maine. There will also be strength and conditioning work, along with plenty of film sessions.

“They really try to simulate an NCAA environment,” added Aimaq.

Islanders Tier Two champions at U18A Nationals T

he Richmond 2000A Islanders came back from the U18 Canadian Softball Championships in Alberta with something they’ve never had before — a gold medal in the Tier Two Division.

“The team has been very competitive for the last four years but we have never been able to put it together in a tournament format.

We’ve lost gold to earn silver and lost silver to earn bronze, but this is the first time we ended a tourney on a winning note, and it felt great.” said head coach Troy Latrace.

Over the previous three seasons at nationals, the Islanders have completed round-robin play with a combined 14-1 record, putting them in the top tier each time, where they then went 1-6 in the playoffs.

This year they got off to a quick 4-0 start at the 20-team event with wins over Winnipeg, Quebec, Calgary and host Lloydminster, but then stumbled in the next three games,

bumping them out of Tier One championship contention.

“It was difficult to go through, being in the driver’s seat only to have things go sideways, but it still put us in a group with some very good teams,” continued Latrace. “Being a first-year team, and based on how we were playing, it’s probably where we belonged. Our pitching and defence were pretty good but our

offence needed to be more consistent to make a strong run at the Tier One teams.”

The playoffs started with a rematch against Lloydminster, where the Islanders played probably their best game of the tournament, taking a 5-2 decision in front of a loud partisan crowd.

first loss in the round robin by a 7-4 score. This time the Islanders came ready to play and took the game 6-3, putting them straight through to the championship game.

The same Mississauga team earned its way back to the final the next day but once again Richmond had their number, going ahead early and neverlooking back in a 7-0 blowout to take gold. Over the final two games the Islanders outhit the Ontario team 20-10.

“Overall I’m happy with the result.

Winning a tourney was a shot of confidence for our team for sure,” added Latrace. “Our goal was to still be playing on Sunday so even though we dropped down to Tier Two it was still a victory for us, and regardless a 7-3 record at nationals is something to be proud of. We were probably top three or four of the first-year teams so I definitely think we will be back in the running for the Tier One finals next year.”

Tigers capture Burns Challenge Cup D elta Blaze fell one game short of completing a perfect season in the Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s Summer League.

The Blaze were looking to complete the First Division “double” but were surprised 6-3 by the Rino’s Tigers in the Danny Burns Challenge Cup final. Delta entered the cup playdowns as the first team in league history to produce a perfect record (12-0-0) in the regular season. A 4-2 semi-final win over the Rino’s Originals followed but the Tigers

thrived in the role of spoiler, producing plenty of offence against a team that had previously surrendered just 13 goals in as many games.

The Division Two Sportstown Cup was to be determined on Tuesday night at King George Park with the Richmond Olympics taking on Metropolitan. The Olympics advanced with a 1-0 win over the All-Blacks while Metropolitan knocked off regular season champion United Nations 2-1.
