Richmond City Council and other dignitaries will take part in the first ever ceremonial flag-raising at 8:30 a.m. in Fishermen’s Park at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Steveston.

The flag-raising will kick off what’s being called “Richmond Canada Day” in Steveston, which features a free, fullday street party throughout the village, alongside the famed Steveston Salmon Festival.

Aside from the Salmon Festival, the new street party will include a huge marketplace with more than 50 exhibitors, plus six stages of entertainment, including main stage performances by Wintersleep and Vancouver’s own blues duo Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer.

hase is on the case, after a three-yearold’s Paw Patrol birthday party at City Centre Community Centre was allegedly crashed by a hungry, self-admiring middleage couple.

Stephanie Wong told the Richmond News that her private function on Saturday afternoon, attended by roughly 70 friends and family members, was intruded upon by two strangers who appeared intent on eating food and cake and getting their photo taken in the rental photo booth.

She said the incident is a reminder to keep a watchful eye for your children, even

in a seemingly secure setting such as a privately-rented community centre room.

“It was so busy, there was little time for my husband and I to be together. But we looked at the couple and they didn’t look familiar at all,” said Wong, 32, a long-time Richmon-

dite and graduate of Hugh Boyd secondary.

Wong asked the uninvited couple who they were with.

“They were trying to brush me off because they were so focused on their photo,” she said.

When they finally pointed at a family across the room and Wong investigated, the couple vanished, with a plate full of food, including pizza, chow mien and spring rolls.

When asked, Wong said she didn’t believe this was a case of an unknowing, nonEnglish-speaking person who innocently stumbled upon the party, thinking it was a free, community event.

“They lied to us, and so clearly. They knew what they were doing,” contended Wong, adding it would be hard to miss the

birthday balloons and signs.

Wong posted the incident to Facebook as a warning.

“At first we thought it was a funny story but after all the talk on Facebook, we think it could be dangerous as well. The message is for parents to be more aware. You never know who can come in and what can happen. We’re lucky they were only interested in food and photos,” said Wong.

One person on Facebook said the couple had crashed their party at Garden City Park.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said this is the first officials have heard of such an incident. He said staff have been asked to ensure there is some signage that indicates a private function is being held inside a room.

L

earning how to be a good community citizen is one of life’s important lessons, and Westwind Elementary School has taken this lesson to heart. Rallying together students, staff, parents and families over the last three months, students learned the value of helping others and giving back by raising $7,001 in support of Richmond Hospital.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Vic Pantaleo, teacher for the grade 5/6 class at Westwind Elementary School. “Part of this fundraising exercise is for the students to understand that social responsibility starts with mutual respect and caring for one another.

When we started to look beyond the school, one of the cornerstones of this community is a hospital. The class made that connection and understands how important health

care is to us. They are the ones who will be benefitting from local health care.”

In April, students from Mr. Pantaleo’s class visited Richmond Hospital to learn more about our local health care system, with hands-on demonstrations about medical equipment and opportunities to ask questions about the health care profession.

“Seeing our students connecting with hospital professionals and engaging with medical equipment was such an unbelievable experience,” says Pantaleo. “The entire class left with so much excitement.”

Since then, Westwind Elementary School has been passionately raising funds through numerous events including bakes sales, daffodil sales, ice cream sandwich sales, as well as partnering with COBS Bread at Blundell Centre for a BBQ fundraiser.

Their most successful event was Westwind’s Fine Arts night, which featured an auction for collaborative art projects from every class as well as performances by the school’s band and individuals, raising a total of $2,700 in one night.

“Our organizing committee, made up of six student leaders in my class, had reached out to our student council, to our lend-a-hand club, to the teachers and the Parent Advisory Committee,” says Pantaleo. “Every staff, student, and parent had participated in some way. It was a combination of hundreds and hundreds of donations from the community that made this possible.”

Richmond Hospital Foundation presented Westwind Elementary School with an Award of Excellence in recognition of their significant contributions to raise funds, engage younger generations to embrace

leadership, give back to their community, and for making local health care a priority in Richmond, now and in the future.

“We feel incredibly successful and proud of what we achieved together,” says Pantaleo. “We have more than 400 students at our school and many were born here at Richmond Hospital.

Coin designer glows with pride Timothy Hsia's toonie is a world first Alan Campbell

I

f you get the world’s first glow-in-the-dark coin in your change, can you keep one for Timothy Hsia? It’s kind of important to him.

The glow-in-the-dark toonie – one of a set minted specially to mark Canada’s 150th birthday - was released into circulation in March.

But such is the coin’s popularity, its designer, Richmond born and raised Dr. Timothy Hsia, has yet to come across one in general use.

And with the country’s big birthday bash just a few days away, Hsia has had to avail himself of the special coin – which depicts two paddlers awestruck by the Northern Lights – by buying as part of a special coincollecting set.

“It’s kind of funny that I actually haven’t seen it yet out there; friends and family across the country have though and have been sending me pictures of it,” said coin-collecting Hsia, whose winning design, called “Dance of the Spirits” was chosen last year (first by a panel and then via a public vote) from thousands of entries into

the Royal Canadian Mint’s 150th birthday competition.

“I think people are hoarding it; they’re not likely going to use it for parking.”

As well as having a regular toonie boasting Hsia’s design, the two-tone glow-in-the-dark version has broken new ground for coins across the globe, with the Northern Lights twinkling when the room goes dark.

Hsia, who credited his fellow finalist brother Stephen for his part in the winning creation, said he had no idea the Mint was going to make a glow-in-the-dark version of the coin.

“I totally didn’t expect the glow-in-thedark thing, but it was a pleasant surprise,” he said.

“And I think it captures the natural beauty that’s in our own backyard.”

The brothers went to Ottawa in May, as part of the winning prize, to tour the mint.

As for the coin itself, Hsia said people seem to be quite excited when they learn of the origins of the design.

“It’s nice that people are getting excited about Canada’s 150th as well,” added Hsia, who has been getting all kinds of media attention recently, including from the BBC and even talk-show host Conan O’Brien,

“I remember Canada’s first two-dollar coin when I was in Grade 6 and I hope Canadians remember my coin the same way.”

According to the Royal Canadian Mint, three million of the glow-in-the-dark coins are in circulation.

The technology being used, said the Mint, is a “new, high-speed, pad-printed colouring process for circulation coins.”

“These coins were coloured using…a new ink formulation containing luminescent material,” stated the Mint.

“Only the core of the $2 coin is coloured

and the glow effect will make the Aurora Borealis part of the design look lifelike.”

The coin will also be available in full sets of the Canada 150 circulation coin collection, which can be purchased from Mint.ca, the Mint’s boutiques and official distributors across Canada.

As part of the winning prize, Hsia will be hosting an official coin exchange on Friday, July 7 from noon to 5 p.m. at Aberdeen Centre, where people can exchange their “old” coins for the new toonies.

He previously dedicated the toonie to his late grandfather, Philip Hsia.

he City of Richmond received $327,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Green Municipal Fund for a trio of planning projects.

“The City of Richmond is strongly committed to sustainability and is constantly looking for innovative ways to reduce or mitigate the environmental footprint of our community and its local government,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“The Green Municipal Fund has allowed us to develop solid planning in support of major upcoming infrastructure projects and has also supported our continued awardwinning pursuit of alternative, sustainable energy sources.”

hether Richmond gets a new hospital tower fast tracked, and whether a new crossing to replace, or complement, the George Massey Tunnel receives a green light in a timely manner, both remain a mystery to members of city council.

This, after a stunning about face on numerous policies by the B.C. Liberal Party in last week’s throne speech and the BC NDP poised to take power with a minority government supported by the B.C. Green Party.

Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap told the Richmond News he is still in favour of building a bridge to replace the tunnel but is willing to consider concerns deeply rooted in the community and at city hall.

“My sense is we’re still in favour of the bridge,” said Yap. “Our government still thinks it’s a good project. Having said that, we understand people have questions and concerns, so we’re committed to collaborate and consult on some aspects of the proposed bridge,” added Yap. Meanwhile, the NDP-Green agreement makes no specific mention of the George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge, although NDP leader John Horgan has expressed a commitment to support the transportation plan of the Mayor’s Council, which does not involve building a megabridge at the Delta-Richmond crossing.

Coun. Linda McPhail said she doesn’t “really have a sense” as to what will happen to the crossing in the near future.

“I know the NDP will include the mayors’ 10-year vision and that didn’t include the George Massey bridge . . . They didn’t come outright and say they wouldn’t go ahead with the bridge,” said McPhail.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie has stated that the proposed 10-lane bridge will not fit with the regional plan to reduce car traffic and bolster rapid transit use. But the crossing still needs to be fixed, he noted.

“Ideally [the NDP] would support the idea of a twinned tunnel,” said Brodie.

Brodie said a new tunnel that includes a rail line to Surrey is feasible under the same budget as the bridge (presently

pegged at $3.5 billion).

“Ideally you’d have a rail line in conjunction” with the crossing, said Brodie.

Brodie noted the NDP has not made specific promises on what to do with the crossing.

“But they have indicated a willingness that there are significant defects with the project and they’re prepared to take a longer look with the project,” said Brodie.

The mayor said he was keen to understand what specific design aspects of the proposed bridge Yap and the Liberals are willing to discuss. Yap told the News one aspect that could be addressed is the width of the approaches.

“On the surface, you’d think the NDP would be more willing to make significant changes,” said Brodie.

Meanwhile, both Brodie and McPhail said they are left guessing as to what will happen with Richmond Hospital’s precarious and deteriorating north tower.

McPhail noted neither the Liberals nor New Democrats made specific promises in their stated platforms to build a new tower.

But whereas the Liberals had the opportunity to include the hospital in their three-year fiscal plan, and did not, four local NDP candidates were more specific in their pre-election promise, according to Brodie.

“The commitment has been recognized by the NDP for a new hospital tower. The commitment from the Liberals has been a planning process. I don’t think there are any assurances from what I’ve heard at the end of that process . . . who knows what happens at the end,” said Brodie.

Yap said the hospital would be built following the planning process (business case).

McPhail said she’s wary of the new Liberal platform of new spending promises.

“It’s kind of interesting how it’s all appeared,” she said.

Yap said a forthcoming report on the budget from the Auditor General should show a much larger surplus than forecasted before the May 9 election.

“We can and should increase investments where historically our approach has been to be very prudent. But we heard loud and clear from the people of B.C. that they want us to focus on (social services),” said Yap.

“Health care truly is a cherished value for us in Canada. But here in Richmond it’s also a matter of great urgency. We need a new Acute Care Tower now. The original hospital tower is now over 50 years old. That’s one third the age of our country! It is seismically unstable, meeting only 17% of seismic standards, and it’s at an extreme risk of collapse even in a moderate earthquake. The infrastructure is obsolete and severely deficient. Our operating rooms, where my many talented colleagues and I work many hours, are half the size of modern operating rooms. They are far too small to easily accommodate today’s medical equipment. Our ORs also lie below the flood plain and they are at risk of flooding in an earthquake or a tsunami.

“Richmond is growing exponentially, and we have the fastest growing population of seniors in the entire province, who will place high demands on our ability to provide care. The number of hospital beds needs to keep pace. The original tower needs to be replaced and the time is now.

“I grew up in Richmond and it’s an honour to continue to serve our community and provide care here. Health care is a value I hold in my heart. On Canada Day, let’s celebrate this together. Please continue to be a champion for Richmond Hospital.

Winnipegger can tell you where to go

Dear Editor, Re: “Spending a year in Winnipeg last weekend,” Richmond News, June 23, 2017.

Should Shelley Civkin ever visit Winnipeg again, here are a few suggestions for a wonderful five-day visit from an ex-Winnipegger: The Assiniboine Park Zoo is a truly great zoo!

(One could easily spend a day there, it’s so big!)

The zoo is located in the beautiful Assiniboine Park, as is the Assiniboine Conservatory, the English Garden, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, the Lyric Theatre, a Nature Playground, The Park Cafe, and so much more.

The Forks National Historic Site is located where the historic Red and Assiniboine rivers meet. It is “54 acres” of shopping, dining, walkways, and parkland. Located nearby is the Canadian Museum For Human Rights, a must-see, I understand.

The Manitoba Legislative Building is one of many historic buildings worth a visit. Nearby is the very fine Winnipeg Art Gallery and the beautiful All Saints’ Anglican Church.

The Exchange District is a “30-block district” of many historic buildings, plus lots of fine restaurants, bistros, cafes, galleries, and antique shops.

The Royal Canadian Mint offers a fine tour. A beautiful building, it, too, is located in parkland.

(There’s lots of parkland in Winnipeg, since there’s so much space!)

There are so many other wonderful tourist attractions and activities that Winnipeg has to offer - if you know where to look! Winnipeg is a proud prairie city known for its outstanding performing arts, cultural diversity, and festivals.

Should you ever visit Winnipeg again, I suggest you get a copy of Winnipeg’s Official Visitor’s Guide before you visit. I suspect that you will be pleasantly surprised by all the attractions and activities available — even “thrilling” ones — IF you know where to look!

Agreement overdue Dear Editor, Re: “YVR, Musqueam Indian Band sign ground-breaking deal,” Richmond News, June 23.

The Musqueam Indian Band — YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, what a beautiful thing to see happen in British Columbia.

It is always so important that we recognise that this land that we continually build and settle on is stolen land.

I’m glad you had decided to include two quotes from Grant-John in there, especially where she talks about the grievance of the white man coming into the country and destroying their lifestyle.

Most articles I’ve read fail to include that and only recognised how good of a deal the Musqueam Indian Band

received — so, I applaud you for that.

Still, I wish there had been more mention of the Musqueam people’s history and their claim to the land that we currently call Vancouver.

The Musqueam people have been on this land for the past 4,000 years. Here they would fish, hunt, trap, gather, and maintain their livelihood.

Today, the Musqueam people can still use this land for economic and traditional purposes, but their territory has almost been completely stolen from them.

The Musqueam people now just live on a small portion of their traditional territory, also known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve.

ith Canada Day two weeks after Father’s Day, it’s a time for grateful reflection; for me, that includes my family’s arrival in Vancouver in late June, 65 years ago.

We came by ocean liner, the MV Georgic, from England to Halifax, and then crossed our new country by train. In the battered photo, we’re stepping into the future on the deck of the Georgic — the children in order from two to 17 years of age and then our parents. I’m second youngest.

During the voyage, my father gave the keynote speech at a banquet. He told the story of the ship.

I listened, and learned the Georgic was a motor vessel, not a steamship. It began life as a pas-

senger liner in 1932 but became a troop ship in World War II. In 1941, German aircraft bombed it at anchor, south of the Suez Canal. Ammunition stores exploded, and it burned and sank — a total loss.

Incredibly, it was refloated a few months later and towed 1,500 miles to “British India,” where my future father, an engineer, was chief executive of the Karachi Electric Supply Company. To help the war effort, his electricians restored the motors and everything else electrical (March–December 1942).

After structural work in Bombay (now Mumbai), the Georgic was a troop ship again. After the war, it was refitted as a passenger liner once more, enabling our Atlantic voyage in 1952.

The story ended like this: “And that was how the Georgic came to be known as ‘the ship that lived again.’”

age brought British troops home from Hong Kong in 1955. It had served longer after death than before it.

My father retired young for health reasons, in 1959. Encouraged by George Norris, sculptor and friend, he took up sculpting.

He’d gather driftwood from the sea, notice latent form, and carve exquisite sculptures from it. In

essence, they’re like the sunken shipwreck with value after all.

Dad died in 1976. Just four of us in the photo are alive for Canada’s 150th birthday, and we all live the Georgic spirit in our own ways. Through my conservation efforts, you may have shared in it.

Single-family Money abound for homeowner Olympic museum, squeezed not historic church Dear Editor, Re: “Tax hike alarming,” Letters, News, June 16, 2017.

I noted one letter of complaint concerning increased property taxes. The amount was similar to ours — close to $5,500.

Up until now, we had been given a disability grant, and this year my husband turned 65.

Because of the outrageous increase in the assessment of the land our house sits on, we get no grant at all. We’re still disabled, and now one of us is retired.

How can this be justified? Why are we all accepting this?

Next year, I will appeal the assessment, but the unfairness of this year’s taxes appalls me.

Offshore investment in housing is costing local residents too dearly.

Massive loss for public space

Dear Editor, Re: “Mylora site causing concern,” Richmond News, June 21, 2017 In the June 21 edition I was sad to read that they are going to re-develop the Mylora No. 5 Road lands. Not more townhouses and apartments, I hope.

I have been a Richmond resident for 50 years and, yes, things have to change but, as a senior, myself and others loved to golf on that small, affordable course.

Ladies as far away as North Vancouver used to come to Richmond to golf and stay for dinner. It was also a good course for all ages learning to golf.

It’s great that the city is building a multimillion dollar seniors centre, but some of us are still able and enjoy getting out in the fresh air and meeting new people.

Maybe the city should have thought about keeping it as a municipal golf course.

Dear Editor, Re: “History needs helping hand,” Letters, Richmond News, June 23, 2017.

I read with stunned shock that the little old church in Steveston, the one that houses the Richmond Hospital Volunteer Thrift Shop, which raises money for much-needed equipment at Richmond Hospital, is in dire need of funds to keep the integrity of the building sound and operating and has had to reach out to a funding page for support.

What is wrong with this city and its council? We pour endless funds, millions of dollars into the Richmond Olympic Oval, the new Minoru pool, and, oh, let’s not forget about that Olympic Museum, least to mention sending council members off on sister city adventures.

And yet, we cannot sustain the little church in the most historic part of Richmond, the occupants of which do the most amazing work to help our city, its hospital and citizens.

A recent exterior restoration was done on Minoru Chapel, the one the city rents out for big bucks for weddings, in the heart of Richmond. And, as usual, it is within that golden ring of city hall spending. Yet, good old church and charity has to start a “Fund Me” page to get an historic building restored to occupancy standards.

What is wrong with Richmond city hall? Everything.

Brodie and crew, you keep taking all the dollars that the endless movie shoots that Steveston provides; the tourist dollars that Once Upon A time fans drop into the city’s coffers. Now it is pay-back time and the little building and its volunteers that do such great work supporting Richmond Hospital need some help. Write a cheque, and do something that counts in Steveston, instead of using it as a backdrop to events like maritime festivals and movie shoots.

hat started as an idea five years ago by Lord Byng Elementary parent Hien Tran has turned into a popular fundraiser that Richmondites can’t seem to get enough of.

In July 2012, Byng PAC launched its iconic Steveston t-shirts, which featured noted street signs in Steveston (Moncton, Chatham, Railway, Britannia, One Road, Georgia, Bayview, Steveston) which it has sold on Canada Day at the Salmon Festival, and subsequent summer farmers’ markets.

Stock eventually depleted years later, which included a couple more small print runs. But due to the community’s constant enquiries to bring the shirts back, the school is ready to re-launch again this Canada Day. The PAC, which I’m the fundraising chair for, decided to do a large t-shirt print run in anticipation of Canada Day, select summer markets and other events. Several Byng parents and children will be selling the Steveston swag on Canada Day at the corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street outside of Laara’s Vacuums. Some of these same Byng students were at the markets five years ago so they literally grew up with the fundraiser.

Having sold the Steveston shirts from the beginning, I can tell you this is a unique fundraiser which surprisingly turned into a sentimental town favourite.

Everyone in Richmond has embraced the shirts with such heart. We’ve sold our shirts and tote bags to people who not only live in Steveston and Richmond but beyond.

People purchased our Steveston shirts and sent them to family, friends and neighbours who moved away from Steveston or graduated from Lord Byng. The shirts have made their way around the world.

The PAC tries to track the shirts and, to date, the Steveston swag has been sent to every province across Canada, Mexico, the U.S. and around the world.

The Steveston shirts come in ladies, men’s, children’s and unisex in various styles and colours. Regular adult shirts retail for $25 and children’s/youth shirts are $20 and tote bags for $18, with all proceeds going back to the Byng PAC. Janet Yau-Nitta is Byng elementary’s PAC fundraising chair

f you think waiting for the next book of the Game of Thrones is tough, try waiting for book three of the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss.

Debuting in 2008 with The Name of the Wind, followed by The Wise Man’s Fear in 2011, we’re still waiting on the conclusion.

The wait is eternal, but though the series is incomplete The Name of the Wind in particular is well worth your time.

The story is of Kvothe, a man, once a legend, now running an inn in a tiny backwater.

Starting life as the son of the leaders of an itinerant troupe of performers, he ends up on the streets of an unforgiving town and eventually attends the most prestigious school of the arcane arts, all before the age of 18.

Kvothe is a talented young man.

Because of his unusual upbringing he’s an accomplished musician, a great reader of people and a quick learner in a great variety of disciplines.

He’s also a master liar which predictably leads him to trouble.

This simple-seeming story could have been filled with the worst clichés, or at least come across as a poor knockoff of

Harry Potter.

This is far from the case: this is a definitely a mature work.

It’s the story of a life already lived, told from an adult’s perspective.

Kvothe reflects on his mistakes, on his flaws and on the people he loved and hurt through his own choices, and he made a lot of them.

Patrick Rothfuss has a particularly casual way of writing.

Given the genre and the length of the book, you would think that the story is epic fantasy, twisting and turning through complex set of characters.

Not here.

This is the story of one man, a personal tale.

It’s quite a refreshing change from the grander stories that are more common in the genre.

And anyone who reluctant to attempt a huge fantasy world would find that it’s not nearly as intimidating as it seems.

Just as a note: Manuel Lin-Garcia, the creator of the Broadway hit Hamilton, has optioned the books for TV or film production.

Given how central music is to the story, this is an interesting development that I think will get a lot of people excited.

Take a vacation; it’s good for your business

A

fter the miniature heat wave that hit the Lower Mainland last weekend, we all know summer is enally here after a long winter.

However, instead of taking a long weekend, or a week off, a number of business owners (and their employees) are choosing not to take their earned time off.

According to a 2013 Sage Reinvention of Small Business Study, 43 per cent of small business owners were taking less time off than they were eve years previously and that trend has continued.

Business owners (and key employees) worry about their companies while they’re away, but taking the time away can actually be good for their health, and their bottom line.

Research shows that men who take vacations are 32 per cent less likely to die of a heart attack and women who take two vacations a year are eight times less likely to suffer from heart disease. More-

over, vacationers experience a reported 82 per cent increase in job performance post-trip.

Pushing yourself beyond your normal boundaries, seeing and doing new things can be a great jolt of inspiration for your daily life. Joining an organized tour can potentially open the door for new experiences without any additional stress of planning, safety and language barriers.

In 2016, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce organized a cultural tour of China for interested Richmondites and chamber members. The feedback from travellers was overwhelmingly positive. n The 72nd Annual Steveston Salmon Festival kicked off on Sunday, June 25 with the 28th Annual Bullhead Derby hosted by the Richmond Golden Rods and Reels Society. Richmondites packed their lawn chairs, fishing rods, and barbless hooks and took to Garry Point Park beach in Steveston for a fun morning with the family. Richmond Rugby unveils All-City teams T

he Richmond Rugby Football Club is pleased to present the Seventh Annual Maurice Smith City of Richmond All-Stars for the 2017 season.

The senior boys team is comprised of athletes from the McRoberts Strikers, Cambie Crusaders, McNair Marlins and McMath Wildcats. The senior girls team is comprised of athletes from McNair, Steveston-London, McRoberts and McMath.

It was a successful year on the field for several of the city’s rugby programs.

The McMath Wildcats finished fourth in the province at the Tier One AA level – the school’s highest-ever finish. McMath’s senior girls team placed fourth in Lower Mainland league play – giving eventual “AAA” champions Carson Graham of North Vancouver a scare in their semi-final match-up.

Cambie’s senior boys were bumped up a division — playing in the very competitive Lower Mainland AA Tier One League. It was a large step-up for the small school and its first foray into the circuit in nearly a decade.

McNair’s senior boys re-emerged from a year’s hiatus to compete in the Lower Mainland Tier Two League — exposing several new players to an exciting brand of rugby.

McRoberts’ senior boys also competed in the Lower Mainland Tier Two League, losing in the zone finals to Elphinstone of Gibsons.

McRoberts’ senior girls had a very successful year – coming seventh at the Provincial Sevens Tournament, and second at the B.C. Tier Two 15-a-side Championships.

Several of the schools will be re-building next year – however the resurgence of four strong senior boys sides and the continued consistent play of the two long-time senior girls’ sides bodes well for the future of the game in the city.

The RRFC would like to congratulate all of the winners and wish them luck in their future rugby endeavors.

Richmond athletes off to Maccabiah Games

I

t most certainly will be an exciting start to the summer for a contingent from Richmond heading to Israel this week to represent Canada at the 20th Maccabiah Games.

Athletes Kara Moscovitz, Breanne Woogman, Josh Moscovitz, and Jake Finkelstein, along with coach Mathew Winograd are part of a 600-member delegation from Canada who will be joining 10,000 Jewish athletes from 80 countries for the third largest sporting event in the world.

Maccabiah Canada’s mission is to promote Jewish identity and to cultivate future leaders through the passion of sports.

Every four years, the Maccabiah Games brings Jewish athletes of all ages to Israel, providing a world-class athletic competition as well as an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture and heritage of the Jewish people.

The Richmond contingent left for Toronto on Sunday for a Team Canada training camp before departing for Israel tomorrow where they will get a chance to be tourists for four days before the Games run from July 4-18.

Kara and Breanne will be playing for the junior girls basketball team. Josh and Jake are members of the junior boys baseball team, while Winograd is part of the coaching staff.

All four athletes grew up together at the Richmond Jewish Day School and are now in the Incentive Program at Hugh Boyd Secondary School. The Moscovitzs and Woogman will be entering Grade 11 in September and Finkelstein Grade 10.

Winograd is a teacher at Richmond Secondary School.

Kara and Breanne came through the Richmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL) and played two years of rep for coaches Chris Kennedy and Tim Carkner who sparked their love for the game.

They also made the zone team that year and Kara went on to play for Basketball B.C.’s U14 provincial team.

Along with being an integral part of Hugh Boyd’s basketball program, the girls have also helped coach and mentor younger girls at the school.

Kara has also played spring ball with VK Basketball and joined Breanne this year to suit up for the Richmond Rebels — a club team that combined talent from rivals McMath with Hugh Boyd — and was coached by John Wilson and Sean Lawson.

n a clash of club rivals Rino Originals and Rinos Tigers, it was the younger side which produced the major upset in the race for the Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s Division One Spring League championship.

The more-experienced Tigers were tied on points with Delta Blaze for top spot going into Thursday’s match but it was the Originals who came out attacking from the first whistle.

Their persistence paid off after 20 minutes when Dylan Dailly blasted one past the Tigers’ keeper for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the 55th minute when Pablo Zubiria doubled the lead.

The wind was knocked out of the Tigers’ sails and it was followed by a pair of goals in 10 minutes from Theo Finseth to make it 4-0.

The Tigers clawed back with a tally from Milan Gandesha and shortly after had the opportunity to close the gap when they were awarded a penalty. Joel Padmore calmly struck the ball towards the near corner of the net but Originals goalkeeper Kuluc Birol pulled off a tremendous save to secure the 4-2 upset win.

Roadrunners topple Nanaimo in quest to secure playoff spot Mark Booth

I

t was an unexpected offensive outburst that has pulled the Richmond Roadrunners within two points of the final playoff spot in the B.C. Intermediate “A” Lacrosse League.

The Roadrunners scored eight of the game’s final 11 goals to pull away from the visiting Nanaimo Timbermen for a 13-9 home floor win on Sunday afternoon at Minoru Arena. The result lifted Richmond’s record to 5-10-0 on the season and right behind Port Coquitlam (6-9-0) for eighth place.

Despite the record, the Roadrunners are among the league’s top defensive teams in with only three clubs ahead of them in goals against. Conversely, it has been a struggle in the goals scoring department.

Richmond was averaging eight goals per contest which ranked last in the 11-team circuit before Sunday’s outburst.
