W

elcome to our 2017 edition of The Best of Richmond. Here, we list the winners in our month-long campaign in which we asked you, our readers, to tell us what you believe to be the best businesses and services in town. Whether it be for shopping, dining or having your pet groomed, let this be your guide. Look for the Best of Richmond logo displayed in the windows of winning merchants. It tells you this business is the number one pick among the record-setting 5,000 entries sent in by our readers. But a community is about more than commerce, which is why we’re also featuring some standout individuals who have helped put Richmond on the map in the areas of service, athletics and the arts. Richmond is blessed with a host of creative and community-minded folks who have helped grow this city. So, enjoy this special section and get to know some of the people and places that make Richmond the best city to live in.

Evan Dunfee Olympic hero Evan Dunfee is not only proud to call Richmond his home, he has embraced it by helping out and being a role model in a variety of ways. The race walker put his sport on the map in a big way in the 50 km event at the 2016 Rio Olympic Summer Games — showing tremendous courage and sportsmanship with a national record fourth place finish. As he continues to work his way to being a medal favourite at the 2020 Tokyo Games, Evan finds the time to be an ambassador for Kidsport and ViaSport’s anti-bullying campaign. He’s also a vocal advocate for clean, drug-free sport. Being a leading spokesperson for so many causes shows how far the McNair secondary graduate has come from being a “shy, awkward and unconfident kid” and how sport has changed his life. Now he is determined to give back to the next generation by helping them better understand that sport can make a difference in their lives, too. How do you keep healthy in Richmond? I can be found out walking around (literally around) the city almost everyday. What’s your favourite movie/book?

2017

Favourite movie would probably be In Bruges. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Minoru Park. What’s top on your bucket list? Visiting Iceland. What’s your favourite meal? Can’t beat a Legendary burger, endless fries and a

chocolate shake from White Spot (not at all looking for a sponsorship…)

If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

What’s your favourite sports team?

No idea, I’m not a celebrity person.

I find myself watching less and less professional sport these days, but I try to stay up to date on all of our Team Canada results.

What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River, North Arm, South Arm or Middle Arm? And why?

What’s your favourite song?

I grew up in the South Arm area and did a lot of my training along the dyke there. Hard to beat looking south on a gorgeous training day and see the occasional kayaker out on the glistening water and then looking north towards the mountains.

500 miles by The Proclaimers. In three words, describe your favourite aspects of Richmond? Community. Olympic Oval. Flat.

Bianco Go Bianca Go and her family immigrated to Richmond from The Philippines when she was two-years-old and it was at a Chinese New Year’s celebration years later where she became intrigued with wushu — a modern exhibition of traditional martial arts. Today, the 17-year-old is a prominent member of the national wushu team, representing Canada at major international competitions. To accommodate her busy schedule, Go is attending Magee secondary school in Vancouver, which offers a program called SPARTS, that accommodates highperformance athletes and their demanding extracurricular activities. She was recently named 2016 Richmond Youth Female Athlete of the Year and is often at the gym teaching wushu to children.

How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

What’s your favourite meal?

I have wushu training at the Wang Heng Wushu Taichi Institute, located in Richmond, at least five times a week. I also take ballet classes and teach dance to children at the Cambie Community Centre.

What’s your favourite movie/book?

What’s your favourite song?

Tangled.

Sorry, by Justin Bieber.

What’s your favourite Richmond park?

In three words, describe your favourite aspects of Richmond?

Adele — She is one of my favourite artists and is one of the few that remain down to earth. Although she grows in popularity, Adele never loses sight of her true self and does not let her fame override her personality.

What’s your favourite sports team?

Minoru Park.

What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River, North Arm, South Arm or Middle Arm? And why? North Arm — I pass by the North Arm of the Fraser River every time I travel to my workplace and gym. I love how calm and quiet the north arm is, as it always soothes me when I am caught up with my busy lifestyle.

Nature. Multiculturalism. Safety.

What’s top on your bucket list?

If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

To travel to Japan.

Camryn Rogers It was an after-school visit to Minoru Park and her first encounter with a legendary coach that would change Camryn Rogers’ life forever. She was convinced to give the Kajaks Track and Field Club a try and was introduced to the hammer throw by the late Richard Collier. He quickly won the 13-year-old over and Rogers soon discovered she was pretty good at it, too. Over the next three years, she would blossom into one of the top throwers in the country and eventually earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of California-Berkeley, where she is headed in September.

How do you keep healthy in Richmond? Keeping healthy in Richmond, I find, is very easy! Food-wise, it is always just about keeping a wellbalanced diet and exercise-wise (when I don’t have training) I enjoy going on walks and biking in the summer. What’s your favourite movie/book? For books, my favourite right now is Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice and for movies, I could watch Inception, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Dark Knight every day and be happy for the rest of my life! Plus any documentary I find. What’s your favourite Richmond park?

Minoru would have to be one of my favourite parks. At the northern end is a sort of private garden with a pond and lots of trees and flowers, which are beautiful in the spring/summer. What’s on top of your bucket list? I absolutely love travelling and you learn so many things from different cultures. I hope to step foot on all seven continents. What’s your favourite food? I would have to say spanakopita, Greek food is so delicious! What’s your favourite sports team?

I actually do not have a favourite sports team as I enjoy watching so many different ones. What’s your favourite song? My favourite song changes all the time. In three words, what’s your favourite aspects of Richmond? Sushi. People. Ocean. What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River? And why? I love the South Arm because I grew up here in Steveston; it’s a very cute village with lots of great people, and a nice view of the river.

Harold Cross If it’s around noon, you can pretty much be assured Harold Cross is sitting down for lunch. You could probably set your watch by him, because he’s been dining at the same place virtually every day, for the past 35 years. In fact, Cross, who is 96, started eating there long before Harold’s Bistro & Bar at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel adopted his name. Back then, it was called the Wayfaring Tree at the old Richmond Inn, a place he and his late wife, Jeanne, decided would be their preferred lunch destination during their retirement. “We decided that we needed something that made us get up, get dressed and go out every day,” said Cross. “That’s how this all started.” About a decade ago, restaurant management asked Cross if he’d mind lending his name to the eatery. Since then, Cross has had his very own table and chair with a small plaque denoting him as the honoured guest. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

What’s top on your bucket list?

I have a set routine. Every day I get up and get ready to come to the restaurant here at what used to be the Richmond Inn and is now the Sheraton.

I’m 96-years-old. I don’t think I’ve got anything left on my bucket list!

What’s your favourite movie/book?

My favourite meal is the Fraser chicken here at Harold’s for dinner. It’s a grilled piece of chicken in a very nice (light chicken jus) sauce, served with a nice bunch of vegetables, like carrots and mashed potatoes.

Movie? It’s gotta be Midway. I served in the Aleutian Islands during the (Second World) war and the Japanese invaded there as a way of trying to divert attention away from the Pacific and Midway. That was a movie which was as true to life as it could be. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Minoru Park, no question. If I want to go for a walk, that’s the place I’ll go.

What’s your favourite meal?

What’s your favourite sports team? I’m a (Toronto) Blue Jays fan in the summer and in the fall, it’s the BC Lions. Can’t say I’m a hockey fan. What’s your favourite song? It’s the aria from Carmen. I love the classical stuff.

In three words, describe your favourite aspects of Richmond? Clean. Beautiful. Friendly. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? That’s a hard question. I don’t really know how to answer that one. What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River, North Arm, South Arm or Middle Arm? And why? That’s pretty easy. It’s the South Arm because of the history and appeal to tourists. I volunteered at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery for a number of years and found the history there just fascinating.

Thank You Richmond for voting for us!

Sarah Drewery Sarah Drewery, the Sharing Farm’s new executive director, is originally from England, but became a Canadian citizen in 2014. “I’m really new to Richmond, so I can’t count myself as having made a huge impact on the community yet,” she said. “However, through my work as executive director of the Sharing Farm, I do get to be part of an incredible organization that has been changing lives in Richmond since 2002. And that entails growing food on city land in Terra Nova Park and donating the produce to the Richmond Food Bank and community meal programs. “It’s such a wonderful place to work with such an inspiring mandate; I feel very lucky to be here.”

How do you keep healthy in Richmond? I cycle everywhere; I love cycling along the dyke to work (except when there is a headwind!). What’s your favourite movie/book? My favourite book is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. There are so many complex ideas in that book, presented with incredibly clarity. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Terra Nova Park! It’s so beautiful out here. I love the wildlife, the views and, of course, The Sharing Farm! What’s top on your bucket list?

WE ARE PROUD TO BE NOMINATED IN THE FOLLOWING

BEST OF RICHMOND CATEGORIES

Best Hotel Best Brunch (Pier 73) Best Chef (Morgan Lechner)

“The team at Pacific Gateway Hotel and Pier 73 Restaurant thanks you!”

I’d like to build my own eco house. That dream is quite a long way off yet, though! What’s your favourite meal? Something made with fresh produce, straight from the farm. What’s your favourite sports team? I’m afraid I really don’t like sports, sorry sports fans! What’s your favourite song? It sounds a bit morbid, but I’ve always loved Sanctus from Fauré’s Requiem. In three words, describe your favourite

aspects of Richmond? Farming. Community. Ocean. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Mrs. Vassilyev (Guinness World Record holder for mother of the most children — 69), because Richmond’s farmland, like her, is so fertile! What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River, North Arm, South Arm or Middle Arm? And why? Middle Arm, because I spend time by it every day on my cycle to the farm.

Patrick Metcalfe Having begun his soccer career with Richmond FC when he was five, Patrick Metcalfe figures he has kicked a ball around on every field in the city. Growing up in Steveston, he attended St. Joseph the Worker elementary and is still close with many friends from there. Metcalfe completed secondary school at Vancouver College and is now attending UBC. The 18-year-old has always thrived in soccer, coming through Richmond’s Metro program and playing on provincial teams, before joining Fusion, of the B.C. Soccer Premier League. It was during his final season when the talented midfielder attracted the attention of Vancouver Whitecaps scouts and was signed to their residency program year. Just last month, he inked his first professional contract with Whitecaps FC2. When he is not on the pitch, Metcalfe likes to spend time with his friends, especially at his favourite place to eat — Nandos. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

Joe Guzzo Joe Guzzo is a local McDonald’s franchisee who began his McDonald’s career in 1975, starting in the kitchen when he was 15 years old. Dubbed the “McJourney,” Guzzo worked his way up the management ranks, holding a variety of senior positions within McDonald’s, including director of operations for B.C. He now operates 13 locations throughout the Lower Mainland. The most iconic of these is the site of the first McDonald’s restaurant in Canada, at No.3 Road in Richmond. In the lead up to McDonald’s Canada’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the restaurant has been undergoing major renovations, all while preserving the historical arches set in place in 1967. A local celebration is scheduled for late June, when residents and community members will be invited back into the newly re-opened restaurant. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

The Vancouver Canucks. I’m a homer; I remember falling asleep listening to the radio when I was very young when the Canucks broke into the NHL.

What’s your favourite Richmond park? Minoru Park, which is around the corner from my restaurant, the first McDonald’s restaurant in Canada. It’s even more beautiful in the spring when all the birds gather. What’s top on your bucket list? Going for a walk with my family along the Great Wall of China.

What’s your favourite song? Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson. In three words, describe your favourite aspects of Richmond? Natural, mature and growing.

What’s your favourite arm of the Fraser River, North Arm, South Arm or Middle Arm? And why? In my daily travel, I cross the mighty Fraser River at many different points — whether it’s the Queensborough Bridge, the Authur Laing Bridge, and the many crossing points in between. Precilia Kong Precilia Kong has spent most of her childhood years in various friendly Richmond neighbourhoods. She has had the opportunity to watch each of these communities evolve over the past 15 years. She graduated from Steveston-London secondary school in 2014, and is now in her final year at UBC, studying neurophysiology and human health. As the president and co-founder of the non-profit organization Ignite the Warmth, she aspires to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty in Richmond — issues that are not commonly discussed. She wants to remind everyone that poverty is not a distant issue, and is happening closer to us than we think. In addition to this goal, Ignite the Warmth hopes to inspire other young people to find ways to make a personal difference in their own communities. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

Henry Yao Henry Yao, political trailblazer, was born in Taiwan and thanks to his parents, the whole family was able to immigrate to Canada in 1990. He spent the early part of his life as a “goof ball,” living in the Shellmont neighbourhood. “I never really had a direction and made plenty of mistakes. However, in 2004, I was diagnosed with lymphoma and the cancer gave me a wake-up call. I wanted to do something meaningful with my life and decided to pursue youth work,” said Yao, who now finds himself politically active, having run independently for city council in 2014 and volunteered several times for the NDP. “I enjoyed watching so many talented youth discovering their gifts and pursing their happiness. However, I also saw many youth struggled with their lives. I decided to do more to help families in Richmond. With my wife’s encouragement and support, I decided to get involved in politics,” said Yao.

How do you keep healthy in Richmond? I work out at a local gym called Richmond Sports and Fitness. What’s your favourite movie/book? A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Spark. It was funny, touching and simple. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Garden City Park. It is a well located and beautiful park with plenty of options. What’s top on your

bucket list? I want to finish writing a book on how to raise the leaders of tomorrow. What’s your favourite meal? Every time I remember to eat my breakfast, I enjoy the energy boost and positive feeling it gives me, as well as the self-restraint from eating junk food throughout my day. However, it’s also the meal I skip the most. What’s your favourite song? Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah

I am honoured to have helped so many residents of this wonderful community buy and sell homes over the last 30 years. Together with my team, we look forward to many more years of doing business together.

Jessy Dhillon Once a Marlin, always a Marlin. Jessy Dhillon has taken the love for both his former high school and basketball in order to give back to his hometown in a big way. He has been a volunteer basketball coach at McNair secondary since 2008, guiding the Marlins senior boys team to the provincial tournament in 2016. He has since added to his hoop duties as coordinator for the Richmond Youth Basketball League. His passion in working with youth carries over into his job with the Surrey School District as an outreach worker. Dhillon would eventually like to pursue getting into municipal/provincial politics, so “I can be a voice for my community needs.” The 31-year-old got married in April to the 2007-08 Richmond Senior Girls Basketball MVP who he has yet to beat in a game of 21! Pongsakorn Yananissorn Pongsakorn Yananissorn is an artist and curator. He runs the Plaza Projects, a non-profit, artist-run gallery at Aberdeen Square, cofounded with Vancouver-based curator Steven Tong. The gallery provides a space where both emerging and established artists have the opportunity to practice and manifest their projects. Monthly exhibitions, as well as talks and other events dedicated to the dissemination, discussion, and realization of contemporary art, are held there. The gallery’s aim is to shift from a site of consumption to a site of dialogue.
