housands of Richmondites are on the lookout for a doctor after one of the city’s most popular walk-in clinics was forced to close.

ichmond Mounties appeared to be coming out in solidarity for a fellow RCMP member on the Sunshine Coast, who has risked his career by publicly protesting a national pay and conditions discrepancy.

Sgt. Chris Backus, a Mountie on the Sunshine Coast, said he has been verbally reprimanded by the RCMP and told not to speak out any further, a day after he and fellow members of the detachment covered up the yellow stripe on their uniforms.

Last week, Public Safety Canada announced retroactive salary increases for the RCMP, but it’s not nearly enough, say many Mounties, who began what’s turning out to be a nationwide silent protest involving covering up the stripe.

Locally, North Vancouver members posted pictures on social media of them wearing plain trousers and on Monday, Richmond officers were spotted following suit in similarly non-striped garb outside of their No. 5 Road detachment.

No one from Richmond RCMP was willing to comment on the apparent show of solidarity for their Sunshine Coast colleague.

The Mounties’ pay increases include a 1.25 per cent raise effective Jan. 1, 2015, another 1.25 per cent raise effective Jan.1,

2016, and a 2.3 per cent market adjustment effective April 1, 2016.

However, the pay and conditions gap between Mounties and municipal forces is still too great, according to the National Police Federation (NPF) which, although not officially representing RCMP members as a union, claims to have more than 40 per cent of the national force signed up.

“This package does very little in moving the RCMP into a competitive salary range to attract and to retain qualified candidates,” said the federation’s co-chair, Brian Sauvé,

who supports the protest and says it will try and help any participating members facing discipline.

“We’ve put up and we’ve allowed our members to be disadvantaged for too long, whether it be resource levels, which have been abysmal or whether it be compensation tables,” he said.

The NPF is one of three groups in Canada trying to professionally represent the country’s 17,000 members.

The force is in the process of forming a union, but no group is yet in place to repre-

sent RCMP officers in bargaining.

Last July, some Mounties refused to volunteer for so-called, “red serge duty,” where they march in parades and other events.

The entry level salary for an officer with the RCMP is $50,674, while a constable with the Vancouver Police Department, on probation, earns $68,443.

The head of the RCMP in B.C., Brenda Butterworth-Carr, sent a message to members asking them not to cover up the stripes.

“While I understand your disappointment on this matter, I trust you will understand why I cannot endorse such action,” she wrote.

“I believe an incomplete uniform undermines the distinctive role we play in keeping our citizens safe and secure.”

More than 8,000 RCMP members have joined the NPF since the RCMP announced its 2015 and 2016 pay packages last week.

With its exponential increase, the NPF said it now represents more than 45 per cent of members and is in a legal position to file for certification.

Under existing legislation, NPF is required to achieve at least 40 per cent membership, in order to file for certification to the Public Service Labour Relations and Employment Board.

“We’re going to be here for another couple of weeks, then everything that’s left will just go into storage, it’s a very sad day,” she said.

Meanwhile, a petition calling on the province to provide British Columbians with better access to primary health care officially launched on Friday.

According to the Walk-In Clinics of BC Association, around 300,000 people in the province do not have a family doctor.

“It’s just not right,” said Mike McLoughlin, the Kelowna-based director of the association.

As well as Richmond, there have been clinic closures in a number of cities in B.C. due to a lack of doctors to staff them, including two in Vernon.

McLoughlin, who owns Medi-Kel walk-in clinic on Baron Road, blames the lack of doctors and a lot of red tape.

“There is usually one physician on the schedule (at a walk-in clinic),” he said.

“If they reach 50 visits then the province will only pay 50 per cent for further visits.

The association has 300 walk-in clinics in its directory and McLoughlin is hoping the petition will be available in clinics across the province.

Earlier this week, a trial petition was put out at a North Vancouver clinic with 100 signatures by early Wednesday, he said.

The petition calls for: Training, recruiting and fairly compensating enough family doctors to provide sufficient and timely access to primary healthcare not only on weekdays, but also after hours and on weekends; Reducing and/or eliminating government red tape (such as daily volume limits) that prevents family doctors from seeing patients in a timely manner, while at the same time upholding quality of care and patient safety; Engaging with family doctors, allied health professionals, walk-in clinics and patients, so as to provide access to primary healthcare closer to home, in people’s neighbourhoods and in their local community.

parks flew at a public debate between several Richmond provincial election candidates at Kwantlen Polytechnic University Thursday evening when Kay Hale of the B.C. Conservative Party took the government to task for building a controversial bridge for, in part, seismic safety concerns, while leaving Richmond’s hospital and schools to fall into disrepair.

“Are we waiting for someone to die? It’s a hospital for God’s sake. Schools; they need seismic upgrades. You don’t want to build a new tower?” Hale asked BC Liberal candidates John Yap and Jas Johal, sitting behind her on a small auditorium stage.

“Why build a bridge? If you’re so concerned about an earthquake coming and the tunnel is going to cause an accident when liquefaction crumbles the tunnel; well how many cars are going to be in there? Maybe 50, compared to the lives in the hospital and schools, with children.”

Hale was interrupted by a spectator who disapproved of her “attack,” when she was supposed to be speaking to how her party would address Richmond Hospital’s ageing north tower.

“I care about the people in the hospital,” Hale exclaimed, denouncing the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

hospital and healthcare funding is a “process” that takes time.

“The challenge is managing all the other needs of the communities, as well,” said Johal, deflecting criticism that the Liberals have delayed building a new hospital tower (since engineering reports in 2005 and 2011 found it to be seismically unsafe).

“That bridge is really about the economy, and the economy is what pays for the healthcare and education,” noted Johal.

The debate also included Green Party candidates Ryan Marciniw, Roy Sakata, and Michale Wolfe and NDP candidates Lyren Chiu, Aman Singh and Chak Au (who left early).

For the first half of the event, candidates took questions related to students.

On housing, Johal said the government had done its job in balancing the free market and intervention, with a 15 per cent foreign homebuyers’ tax.

Yap was quick to dispel criticism that tuition rates were too high by noting the government has recently slashed interest rates from prime plus 2.5 per cent to only prime (2.7 per cent) — a move welcomed by the B.C. Federation of Students.

Yap said B.C.’s tuition fees are “reasonable;” again striking the chord that social spending must be balanced against economic output.

When asked about young people facing precarious working conditions, Yap said B.C.

has the lowest unemployment rate in Canada.

“It’s a great success story,” he said.

However, critics have noted that 21 per cent of those employed in B.C. are working part-time, which is the highest rate among provinces in March 2017. The country-wide average is 19 per cent.

Wolfe called for a $15 minimum wage, a popular talking point for his party.

Chiu said adult basic education needs better funding. She repeated this point several times, often failing to answer other questions directly.

On the matter of social spending, Yap said B.C.’s disability rate of $1,033 must be reviewed.

“If that is your only source of income, it’s clearly difficult to live on it,” said Yap. Still, the government waives MSP fees for those on disability, added Yap. Sakata took Yap to task, telling him: “Don’t tell me you’re going to do it in the next eight years; you’ve failed to do it in the last eight years.”

Notably, there’s no planned increase in the Liberal platform, released Monday.

The “Wild West” of campaign fundraising was also tackled by some candidates.

Yap said he will wait for an independent review to judge whether or not to put a cap on donations and a ban on corporate and union contributions. That review will come after the election and is non-binding.

“If they were honest about this, they’d do it before the election,” said Marciniw.

Chak Au, NDP candidate for Richmond South Centre in the upcoming May 9 provincial election, said he suspects “well-organized” BC Liberal supporters are behind the “ridiculous” print and radio ads that attack him for hypocrisy.

The ads challenge his support for broadlyaccepted policies regarding same-sex marriage, sex education, transgender rights and safe drug-injection sites, saying he once opposed these policies.

However, Au’s Liberal competitor, long-time MLA Linda Reid, said there’s no room for the kind of negativity displayed in the ads. She also opposes the notion that BC NDP support for such policies — which are equally supported by Reid’s Liberals — have resulted in “moral bankruptcy” in East Vancouver.

The ads claim voting for Au’s NDP will turn Richmond into another “corrupt” Downtown Eastside.

“I certainly don’t believe, for a second, that that is a valid argument,” said Reid.

“I am a Liberal, I support these (policies),” added Reid.

“My job is to ensure safety and security for all,” she said.

According to political scientist Dr. Maxwell Cameron, the ads appear intent on discour-

aging people from voting for Au. “It seems to benefit (BC) Liberals in what is effectively a two-party system,” said Cameron.

The University of B.C. professor said it was the right move for Reid to speak out against the “sleazy” messages.

“I’m not sure anyone from the (BC) Liberal Party would want to get behind this,” said

Cameron.

“People may be asking (the Liberals), does this express your views?” said Cameron.

To that end, Reid said she hopes her record speaks for itself while campaigning.

“I’ve always run a high-road campaign.

We’re not shifting,” said Reid.

The ads were created under the third

position on same-sex marriage.

“I support human rights, and I support equal rights for all and, also, I support the law of the land,” said Au. In February, Au told the News he reserves the right to hold his own personal opinions.

As for safe-injection sites, Au, a counsellor, said he now supports them as part of a harm-reduction program, combined with drug prevention, enforcement and treatment.

“They’re making accusations based on no facts,” said Au of the second series of ads that call East Vancouver “morally bankrupt.”

Cameron also said the ads have no basis in fact.

“Safe-injection sites don’t foster more drug use, corruption etc. There is a lot of scientific evidence available about the impact of safeinjection sites. What we know is that it saves lives,” said Cameron.

“Addiction is a social problem,” and “not an issue of lack of character,” noted Cameron.

The ads, said Cameron, “play into some of the worse prejudices of the Downtown Eastside, which is confronting, in a remarkable way, these problems. I think it’s shameful when we see the number of people dying on the streets that people would use this for political ends that taps into prejudice rather than evidence and what experience tells us

Life's no stroll for dog owner and her pets Alan Campbell

hat do you get when you cross a 60-year-old woman with two tiny dogs, self-contained in a pet stroller and a transit

bus?

What you don’t get is access to the 36-seater, 77-passenger capacity means of public transportation.

Why? Because TransLink’s policy doesn’t allow pet strollers — which are exactly the same dimensions as a child stroller — on their buses.

It may sound like a joke, but for Jennifer Hailstone and her two pets – Lexi, a Maltese, and Lily, a Shitzu cross – there isn’t any punchline.

And she certainly wasn’t laughing a couple of weeks ago when she was left stranded at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in the pouring rain, after two separate bus drivers and then a taxi driver refused to take her and her dogs back to her Richmond apartment.

After all, ever since she decided to start transporting Lexi and Lily in the pet stroller last summer (health issues now prevent her from carrying them in a crate), she’d never had a problem visiting her daughters in Victoria.

“The day before, I had gotten on (the bus) at Bridgeport and there were no issues at all heading to the ferry terminal,” said Hailstone, who lives in a condo in The Gardens at Steveston Highway and No. 5 Road, where she’s the building manager.

“But coming back (the next day), I got off the ship, lined up like everyone else for the bus (in the cold and rain)...after paying, I was told, rudely, by the driver, ‘Oh, by the way, you can’t come on my bus with that, pointing to the dogs in the stroller.”

The driver of the next bus also refused, as did a taxi driver, rendering Hailstone marooned in the rain.

“I was told by that bus driver it must be a carrier you carry and must be placed on your lap,” she said.

are bigger than my stroller and they’re never told to put it on their lap.

“I have seen people not pay to bring on huge items, yet, here I was, denied a ride. I do not drive — never have — and rely solely on transit.

“Now I have no way to get myself and my dogs to Victoria to see my family and I feel I am being discriminated against

because of my age and the fact I am unable to carry them.”

Hailstone — who says she can’t afford to kennel her dogs when travelling and doesn’t know anyone well enough to dogsit while she’s away — said, on the bus, it only mentions that pets be in a pet carrier.

“There’s no mention of size and how to manage the carrier once on the bus. I assumed because I spent over $200 at a pet store, it would be deemed a pet carrier, as well,” added Hailstone, who moved from Victoria in 2002, and tries to visit her daughters on the Island at least twice a month.

“I’m more than willing to pay extra on the bus, if that’s the issue.

“I have never placed my dogs in the aisle and if I took up an extra seat, I would stand up.”

Hailstone received an apology from a Coast Mountain Bus operations manager for the way she was spoken to by the driver.

However, a spokesperson for TransLink, although acknowledging Hailstone’s predicament, said it was important to make sure there is room for people on the transit system who need the priority seating area.

“TransLink policy doesn’t allow pet strollers on transit to prevent overcrowding and ensure room for customers with mobility assistance devices, such as wheelchairs,” the spokesperson added.

“This is a long-standing policy. Information about pets on transit and pet strollers specifically can be found on our website or by calling customer information.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the system and can consider this feedback, should our pets on transit policy ever be reviewed in the future.”

According to TransLink, pets are only allowed on board in small, hand-held cages, which must fit on your lap and must be fully enclosed with no part of the animal exposed.

It may also be placed on the floor, but must not impede free passage of customers and must not block any doors. If only standing room is available, the transit operator will refuse passage to you and your pet.

Racist acts are teachable moments Dear Editor, Re: “Racist rants on the rise,” News, April 5.

Thank you for your article on racist rants. My husband and I have been on the receiving end of such rants and while it angers us, it saddens us more than anything to think that racism still exists and how there is so much anger and hatred from racists towards people who they don’t think belong to “their” country.

When it happened to us, our daughters witnessed the entire thing.

Part of us wished they didn’t see it, but we decided to turn it into a teachable moment.

Let it be known, we all built this great land Dear Editor, Re: “Racist rants on the rise,” News, April 5.

I have an appeal to my fellow Canadians of colour: Are you tired of ignoramuses or even well-meaning, friendly folks assuming you are new to Canada when some of your forebears may have been Canadian longer than theirs? When some of your family may have worked their fingers to the bone building this country for them, or even died, so that they could have the freedom to badger and insult you? Do you just shrug off this boorish behaviour by saying people just don’t know any better?

Well, lots of people probably don’t, so perhaps it’s about time we started speaking up about what our forebears, or we ourselves have done, and make our ethnic

contributions to Canada known, First Nations people included.

My dear fellow Canadians, we need to tell others about ourselves more and what our families have done to help build Canada, not in a boastful manner, but in a factual way. If we have ancestors who have cleared the land we live on; built the fishing, mining and lumber industries which made our wealth; constructed the railways and highways we send our commerce on; found international markets for these industries to expand; contributed to the arts and culture of Canada and so on, then maybe we should be including our ethnicity in letting people know, to help clear up the misinformation that we are newcomers, or have not contributed?

Minoru Place must follow gambling rules Dear Editor, Re: Response to Letter to the Editor, “Fear of gambling at seniors centre,” News, April 7.

In a recent letter, concerns were raised about stopping the exchange of small amounts of money (25 cents, $1 or $2) during card games at Minoru Place Activity Centre.

The Provincial Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch has confirmed that game and card playing activities that involve the exchange of money, no matter how small, occurring at Minoru Place Activity Centre, are considered gaming and is unlawful and would not qualify for a gaming licence.

As there is currently no licence option for ongoing weekly card

games involving gambling, the Minoru Seniors Society, working with City of Richmond staff, who oversee the operation of the facility, must ensure that all activities at Minoru Place are conducted lawfully.

The society and city staff are searching for a solution that does not involve an exchange of money so that all groups can continue to play at the centre.

The society’s mandate is to improve the quality of life for seniors.

Updating policies and practices helps to ensure that the facility continues to be well-managed and that programs and services are accessible to all seniors.

We need guidance Dear Editor, Re: “Racist rants on the rise,” News, April 5.

I’m saddened by the racist incidents occurring in our community. Richmond News is an English language paper. I can only imagine what is being reported in newspapers in other languages (i.e. specifically, Chinese newspapers).

As good as it is to be aware of what is going on in the community, news like this may contribute to ethnic groups staying within and promoting their own shopping, socializing and community building.

I’m a regular reader of the News and what I would like to see after stories such as “Racist rants” is, suggestions as to what I can do as a community member to fix this problem.

What should I do if someone starts yelling at me (I am of Asian descent) or says racist slurs? What should I do if I witness such behaviour? I know what I should do in my work space when there are incidents of bullying or racism, but what about public spaces where I don’t have company policies and HR to protect me.

It would be helpful to read about some simple tips on how to stay safe and/or deal with racist rants.

Attack ads miss mark

Coun. Day defends candidate Chak Au

Dear Editor, Re: Election attack ads, Richmond News April 7.

Election attack ads are counterproductive because they do not inform, only alienate.

When I read the condemning display ad in the April 7 edition towards MLA candidate Chak Au, I was astonished at the ignorance and unsubstantiated threats.

What nonsense. The City of Richmond has an excellent reputation and some of the lowest crime rates in B.C. I have worked with Chak Au as a school trustee and a councillor and I can say without a glimmer of doubt he has no intentions of turning Richmond into the Vancouver east side.

City council has created many programs

that help the needy, drug-dependant and hopelessly lost individuals who reside in Richmond.

Chak Au is a big supporter of our emergency services and votes consistently to increase public consultation and awareness.

Working on council is a privilege and an education, so if he is elected to be an MLA, he will be well-prepared to offer a new kind of public engagement that will serve the people of Richmond well.

Please take the time to get to know all the candidates in your riding and don’t allow mean-spirited propaganda to affect your vote.

Bus service not a cash cow Dear Editor, Re: “Community rallies around dumped HandyDART users,” News, April 5.

Tell me why it was deemed a good idea to give an American, for-profit company (i.e. MVT transit) control over a social service (i.e. HandyDart) and by whom?

I recall a quote from a ‘Dart dispatcher a year or three ago, on being informed he was waiting the usual five minutes for a nearly 90-year-old woman to navigate her walker down a long hall to a slow elevator.

“Just leave (immediately go to your next pick up). We’re not running a social service here.”

Ummm, yes. Yes, you are. This is Canada, where we care for seniors and disabled people, even if there’s no corporate profit to be made.

If you signed up to run HandyDART without understanding that, you’ve made a horrible mistake.

To my understanding, possibly wrong, NAFTA applies to business, not social service. You (MVT) came up here expecting to cash in as you have in Texas and California without doing due diligent research into what was involved?

Do you feel as dumb as that sounds?

And that has been passed on to the next generation as Leonard’s older brother (Fred) and younger sister (Christine) are both pharmacists who help produce a truly family-run enterprise.

A true test of how the new owners had been in integrating themselves into the Steveston community came in February during a customer appreciation day.

“We were pretty nervous,” Leonard said. “We didn’t know if anyone was going to come.”

But they were pleasantly surprised as scores of clients [led in and introduced themselves.

“People came and we were blown away,” Leonard said.

“The people here are just amazing. They believe in us as a trusted source of care and we are working hard to live up to that reputation and go beyond,” she said.

“Sadly, it’s that personal touch which is being pushed aside in many other places.

That’s something we will not do.”

Watershed refreshes Eve Edmonds

G

oofy family road trip meets punchy political documentary in a new production which opened at Gateway Theatre on Friday.

The result is an entertaining and educational (yes, they can be one and the same) work that helps define the genre of documentary theatre.

The Watershed opens with a storm — literally. A torrential downpour is heading our way — so we’re told by an hysterical weather reporter from Fox News.

Brenda Robins does a great job of delivering news meant to create maximum panic.

Indeed it does rain, and hard, but the worst that happens is a family’s pipes burst.

This leads the family mom, Annabel, played

by Liisa Repo-Martell, to call a plumber — not to fix the pipes, but to teach her two prepubescent daughters the physics of water system. Hence, we get a glimpse into the kind of mom we’re talking about.

Annabel is a semi-autobiographical depiction of the show’s playwright Annabel Soutar.

In The Watershed (as in life), Annabel is a playwright, working on a production about water. In particular, she’s looking into why Stephen Harper’s Conservative government was proposing (this is set about 2012) to cut funding to the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in northern Ontario.

The ELA is (and now was) a one-of-a-kind independent research facility that tracked

climate change and its impact on fresh water lakes over a significant period of time.

Despite costing the government a relative pittance, the federal Conservatives aim to close it and Annabel aims to find out why.

Throughout the play, Soutar intertwines actual events, (a protest by scientists in Ottawa, or a speech in the House of Commons, for example) with the drama of personal life, dealing with work, her husband (played by her real-life actor husband Alex Ivanovici), kids and an ailing father.

The second act is particularly funny as we watch the environmentally-conscious Annabel take her family on a road trip in a gas-guzzling Winnebago from Quebec to the oil/tar sands of Alberta.

There’s also mystery as Annabel tries to get to the bottom of why the facility is being closed, who may take over and why some activists suddenly go quiet.

But this isn’t just a bunch of Harperbashing. Soutar is careful to do justice to the complexity of this debate. Annabel’s father, played by Eric Peterson, from hit TV shows, Street Legal and Corner Gas, is a staunch conservative who well articulates that side of the argument.

Ultimately, Soutar and cast make this production work by keeping it real and relatable on a personal, as well as political, level. It is a refreshing antidote to the polarization that too often happens around these issues.

Gala celebrates soccer club's philosophy RGSA goes beyond pitch to develop young players

eyond the fun, fueled by a glitzy gala awards night at the River Rock Show Theatre on April 6, the Richmond Girls Soccer Association is celebrating a fundamental change in the way it approaches the sport by developing more than just skills on the pitch.

“We canvassed our membership, asking them what they were looking for and we quickly came to realize that, yes, we’re about soccer, but it’s also about developing the kids as human beings, future citizens and leaders,” said association chair Mandhir Punia.

With that focus, the club, which has been in existence since 1974, started implementing volunteer opportunities for the players.

Some of the local groups benefitting from that included the annual Windows of Hope event at the Richmond Auto Mall, which supports the Richmond Christmas Fund.

They also took part in community food and toy drives and set up donation events that sent second-hand soccer equipment to countries in need across the world.

“We wanted them to start giving back to the community, as well as provide the opportunity to further their education in a post-secondary setting while playing a sport,” Punia said.

“So, we set up showcase tournaments and other pathways for the girls to not just be soccer players and get to the highest levels, but explore other educational opportunities.

“And the players and coaches have come a long way in helping us realize that vision and this (gala) was a chance to recognize everybody and what they’ve done.”

One of the knock-on effects of the club’s shift in philosophy was the fact some of the older and past players have returned to help coach the younger girls.

“It’s really been about creating that family aspect within the club,” Punia said, adding the feedback for the gala component was overwhelmingly positive.

“The girls had an absolute blast,” Punia said. “It was a huge success because they realized that night was all about them. They were just ecstatic.”

Based on how the gala went, plans are to make it an annual event.

“The players, they are our future,” Punia said. “And we have a responsibility as coaches and leaders to provide them with every opportunity to be the best they can be on and off the field.”

Three years later, as a U16 team, they again made the provincials, but this time persevered to play in the championship game, only to be beaten by Burnaby.

The club and the coaching staff hope it will be third time lucky for the boys in their final tilt at the provincials.

ichmond’s Olympic race walking hero Evan Dunfee isn’t quite sure how the vote will go on Friday, but he’s certain he’s going to have some big decisions to make very soon.

Up for grabs at the end of the week is the future of race walking’s arduous 50 km event in major competition, such as the World Championships and the Olympics.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is voting, for various reasons, on whether to scrap the long-distance event, which is Dunfee’s specialty.

If it votes to kill the 50 km, the World Race Walking Championships in China in May 2018 would be the last major competition for the event.

And with the Richmond native already almost a year into the four-year cycle to prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he and fellow race walkers across the world are imploring the IAAF to, at the very least, delay any change until after the next Olympics.

“I know that our event probably needs to adapt and evolve, but the fact that all of this seems to be getting done behind our backs is a major problem,” said Dunfee, who shot to fame globally at the Rio Olympics last summer when he was bumped near the end of

the race, before graciously ending an appeal process that potentially would have given him the bronze medal.

“I’m not a 20 km specialist, although I still have that option for Tokyo in 2020. I’d have to assess things if changes were made for 2020; but they really shouldn’t be making any changes before the Olympics.

The race walking fraternity around the world has, according to Dunfee, been petitioning everyone they know to draw attention to the controversial move.

“I’ve been getting in contact with our representatives at Athletics Canada and been trying to rally public support,” he told the Richmond News on Monday.

“Our argument isn’t that there shouldn’t be change, it’s about the athletes having a voice; we seem to have no say or input in this.

“The IOC showed up unannounced and said that changes need to be made right now or they would make them.

“In my opinion, the IOC doesn’t like the length of the event; it doesn’t like the road closures; they think it doesn’t appeal to the younger generation and is not particularly marketable.”

As for gender equality — there is no women’s 50 km event — the IAAF tried to remedy the situation by introducing a 50 km race for women.

However, according to Dunfee, the “women must match the men’s times” for it to be considered.

“It’s not a great first step really,” he said.

Dunfee set a new Canadian record in the 50 km race at the Olympics in Rio, where he placed fourth. It appeared, initially, he won bronze after it was first determined Japan’s Hirooki Arai made contact with Dunfee as the race reached its climax. But officials overturned the decision.

Dunfee then advised the Canadian athletics team not to protest the decision, which further endeared him to fans around the world.
