I

f you’ve lived in Richmond long enough, it’s likely you’ve witnessed at least a handful of ignorant, throw-away jibes tossed in the direction of apparent immigrants.

But two very recent incidents in busy, shopping centre parking lots in the city — one of which attracted the attention of the RCMP — is giving cause for concern that racism is on the rise in Richmond.

The most recent happened on Saturday afternoon, as mom-of-five Din Martin began reversing into a parking spot in Blundell Shopping Centre.

Martin, who is of Filipino ethnicity but is Canadian-born and has lived in Richmond all her life, said she was at least halfway into the spot when another driver — a Cauca-

sian man in his 40s, ironically with a thick Eastern European accent – launched into a vile, racist tirade.

“From nowhere, he started yelling profanities at me,” said Martin, who was heading to the nearby meat shop with her sister-in-law.

“I asked, calmly, if he would like me to stop. He screamed ‘do you even know how to speak English?’ I thought ‘what’s the problem here?’

“Something clearly upset this guy, but I couldn’t understand what.

“He had his wheel cranked, so if he had moved, he would likely have hit me, as he didn’t appear to see me at first.

Martin said the irate man had about five people in his minivan, most of whom looked like young kids.

“He continued screaming at me and I asked again if he would like me to move forward,” she recalls.

“He shouted ‘**** you, you ****ing im-

migrant, you don’t ****ing belong here.’”

Ironically, Martin has lived all her life in Richmond.

“I have every right to be here,” she added.

Martin, who describes herself as a “compassionate person,” suggested that the ranting racist was perhaps “just having a bad day, or something.”

“Maybe something bad had just happened to him, I don’t know,” she said.

“I guess I feel kind of sorry for him…and his kids. But there is a line to cross.”

Understandably angry and upset herself, Martin said she rolled up her window and followed her sister-in-law’s advice to calm down and not say anything else.

“He eventually pulled out and almost took out two cars in the process of leaving the parking lot,” added Martin, who laughed that her two youngest kids are half Scottish, half Filipino.

Richmond man arrested in PharmaNet privacy breach Cheryl Chan

Richmond man has been arrested in connection to a series of PharmaNet breaches that may have compromised the personal medical information of about 20,500 British Columbians.

Vancouver police executed a search warrant at a home in Richmond on March 23 and arrested a suspect. Investigators believe the man gained unauthorized access to the provincial online prescriptionmedication information system and used patients’ personal data for fraudulent purposes.

The man, who hasn’t been identified, faces a number of identitytheft-related charges, said police.

Charges haven’t been laid.

The Health Ministry characterized the breach as a product of “cybercrime” that targeted doctor and

medical clinic offices and PharmaNet service vendors.

“Through forensic analysis, we have learned that several breaches, which have occurred since July 2016, are connected,” said spokeswoman Lori Cascaden.

“This inappropriate access to PharmaNet is not because of a direct hack into the system. It is suspected that access was obtained through impersonation of physicians and other methods.”

In February, the Health Ministry sent out letters to about 7,500 people affected by the breach, which officials became aware about after users and vendors reported incidents of “suspicious access.”

Since then, another 13,000 people may have had their PharmaNet information accessed, said the ministry Monday.

In the majority of cases, the suspect is believed to have accessed patients’ profiles, which contain

their name, address, gender, date of birth and personal health number. In some cases, information such as the patient’s medication history for the last 14 months was also viewed.

To mitigate the risk of identity theft, the government said it will provide free credit monitoring to affected individuals. People who had their personal information compromised should expect a letter on how to access this service.

The ministries of Health, Finance, and Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services have launched an investigation and taken immediate steps to stop the breaches, and is working to implement “more robust security measures” with PharmaNet vendors, said the health ministry.

An independent security review of PharmaNet and an overall modernization of the system, which would include security enhancements, are also underway.

taxi driver has had his permit appeal denied by city council, after it emerged he’s facing serious charges of drug trafficking.

Mohammad Mohsin was originally refused the renewal of his taxi driver’s chauffeur’s permit in February, due to the discovery of the charges, before he decided to appeal the decision.

But, at a special city council meeting on Monday afternoon, the full extent of the case against Mohsin became apparent, including allegations of helping to sell fentanyl-laced heroin and crack cocaine. However, none of this has been proven in court.

While addressing council, Richmond RCMP’s Sgt. Rob Quilley told how, after carrying out background checks during Mohsin’s application process, a file came up with regard to the “illegal trafficking of illegal narcotics.”

“Reading through the file, it involved a business in Vancouver that appeared to be a front for selling illegal narcotics,” said Quilley.

“A search warrant was executed and (Mohsin) was working there and was (allegedly) actively involved in the sale of the narcotics.”

According to the City of Richmond’s chauffeur permit criteria, anyone charged with a serious, violent criminal offence or drug trafficking cannot be given such a licence.

According to the report before city council, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) file states that in August of 2016, a series of search warrants were executed, including one at the business where Mohsin was employed. “(He) was present in the store when the warrant was executed. He was arrested at the time. During the search of the business, large amounts of packaged (for sale) heroin (laced with fentanyl) rock cocaine and powdered cocaine were recovered,” the report stated.

“A number of weapons, large amounts of cash and other documents and paraphernalia associated to drug trafficking were recovered…it is also noted that (Mohsin) was actively involved in the sale of narcotics from this business.”

Mohsin, according to the report, has been charged with drug trafficking offences and is awaiting trial.

Appealing to city council personally on Monday, Mohsin said he needed to work to support his family.

“My wife doesn’t work due to medical reasons,” he said.

While acknowledging the “predicament” Mohsin now finds himself in, Coun. Harold Steves said his duty, first and foremost, is to the safety of the general public.

“We have a position of public responsibility; do you not see yourself as a potential target (if) you’re involved in the drug trade?” asked Steves.

“We’ve seen numerous people murdered in the drug trade around here.”

Coun. Derek Dang questioned whether the local taxi firms willing to hire Mohsin are aware of the charges hanging over his head.

“As long as I have the chauffeur’s permit, they don’t care,” Mohsin responded.

Mohsin’s appeal was unanimously denied by council.

Yap: Donations need clarity Graeme Wood

ichmond-Steveston MLA John Yap says cash donations are a pillar of democratic elections but transparency of such contributions is critical. As such, he welcomes an independent review of B.C.’s electoral finance laws, which have come under scrutiny leading up to the May 9 provincial vote.

“I believe we should give individuals the freedom to decide how they should support political parties. We believe fundamentally in that freedom,” Yap told the Richmond News, addressing concerns that his BC Liberal government is influenced by political donations, and that laws pertaining to disclosure have been breached.

On the former concern, Yap said: “Now, I get it that there’s some who say there’s a perception that because you’re so successful at fundraising, that somehow there’s a problem here. I would say that we’re very clear; our Premier has been very clear; and all of us have been very clear — that political fundraising is to help pay for the costs of the political campaign process. It costs money to run a campaign.”

Yap, who has won three straight elections with 52-61 per cent of the popular vote.

“No one is making a political contri-

bution with an expectation that they’re going to get a certain policy,” he added.

Over the past 11 years, The BC Liberals have reportedly taken in about $12 million from the real estate industry, which has recently come under scrutiny from the provincial government for a lack of regulations and independent oversight.

Dermod Travis, executive director of Integrity BC, a non-government organization that advocates for campaign finance reforms, has charged that the industry has received special treatment during the long BC Liberal tenure.

Travis and critics with the BC NDP has also charged that donors end up with lucrative contracts.

Travis noted donations over the past decade by companies bidding on the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project amount to nearly $300,000.

Yap said such suggestions are innuendoes.

With regards to an ongoing RCMP investigation into indirect political donations and other potential contraventions of the BC Election Act, Yap said he is committed to the notion of transparency and rectifying that matter.

“It is important to know who is making the donation. It needs to be accurate,” he said.

A recent Globe and Mail investigation revealed donors concealing the true

source of the donations by listing them personally, but later being reimbursed by their companies.

To that extent, the BC Liberals have recently refunded $92,874 after identifying 43 illegal, indirect political contributions that contravene the Election Act. The BC NDP has reportedly refunded $11,000.

On Thursday, the Auditor General of B.C. assigned special prosecutor David Butcher to the case.

Another concern has been donations from foreign corporations, which are still allowed in B.C. despite being banned in most other jurisdictions in the west.

Francesco Trebbi, a professor of economics, said, via UBC.ca, banning foreign donations is intended to limit outside influence of domestic policy.

Yap reiterated that campaign donations are a “fundamental” political freedom.

“People are voting with their vote and their funds . . . They should have the freedom to support [a political party] either through volunteering or financial contributions.”

eteran provincial politician Linda Reid kicked off her local election campaign in Richmond South Centre with the opening of her office on Sunday.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia could, if elected, mark a 30th year in office, as MLA, come the end of the next term.

Reid is already the longest standing MLA, having first been elected in 1991, when the BC Liberals broke out, after

the demise of the Social Credit Party.

Reid is the recipient of three commemorative medals – the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Reid is competing against Coun. Chak Au, who is running for the BC NDP. Greg Powell is the BC Green Party candidate.

hak Au says the BC Liberals have known for a dozen years that Richmond Hospital’s north tower is in a state of disrepair, so now is the time to expedite the construction a new one — something a new BC NDP government would commit to doing, following the May 9 provincial election.

“We know that the hospital’s north tower is unsafe since 2005 and it was reconfirmed again in 2011 with another report that says in the case of a moderate earthquake it would not withstand,” said Au, a city councillor and BC NDP candidate for Richmond South Centre.

“If we don’t make the commitment now, it will just take longer.

So that’s why we’re asking for that commitment now,” from the government, said Au, who was joined

by Richmond’s three other NDP candidates at the hospital Monday for a planned media event.

The candidates appear set on making healthcare a major talking point in Richmond, having now issued a handful of news releases regarding Richmond Hospital.

The concern is an over-utilized tower that, according to assess-

ments, would be at serious risk of collapse in a moderate to strong earthquake. Furthermore, the ground-floor facilities are beneath the flood plain.

Not only is the tower seismically unsafe, (Richmond-Queensborough) candidate Aman Singh said it affects patient care.

“We did a tour of this hospital. Did you know in the basement where you’re supposed to keep storage and keep files and things like that, they’re using that actively as part of the hospital. That shouldn’t happen.”

Singh said Richmond Hospital’s condition is symptomatic of greater problems in healthcare in B.C. “The problem is not just Richmond Hospital, the problem is province-wide. Government is all about priorities. In the last 16 years we’ve seen the BC Liberal government, and especially for the last few years under Christy Clark, it’s all about the wealthy and well-connected,” said Singh.

Richmond North Centre candidate Lyren Chiu, a nurse, said wait times in B.C. are some of the highest in Canada (according to the Fraser Institute’s November 2016 report) they are the highest in Canada, outside of Atlantic Canada).

lion of the estimated $283 million needed for a new tower. It presently has $25 million.

The government reports that new plans for a tower have been expedited by Vancouver Coastal Health and the Ministry of Health must still approve a business plan for it. The process could take 5-7 years, according to VCH.

.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Todd Stone, intends to be in Delta Wednesday morning to officially break ground on a new bridge to replace the George Msssey Tunnel.

Despite opposition to the bridge from most Metro Vancouver mayors, Stone recently told media that the project will go ahead, regardless.

The bridge is expected to cost $3.5 billion and includes widening Highway 99.

The government says it is necessary to clear the tunnel congestion.

Concerns include: no cost estimate for a new tunnel provided to the public; facilitating deeper dredging of the Fraser River; farmland expropriation; traffic jams being pushed to the Oak Street Bridge; and the bridge not being part of the regional transportation plan.

Unfortunately, it’s not the first time Martin has been on the thick end of racist comments in Richmond — and she said it’s becoming routine.

“I would have reported it, as he’s probably done this before.”

One person who did report a very similar incident two weeks ago, albeit slightly more sinister, was on the receiving end in Costco’s parking lot on Bridgeport Road.

“He repeated his death threats multiple times and started to walk up close to me right to my face. The hate in his eyes was very evident.”

According to Kim, the man told him that he knew where he lived and would be coming after him.

In the face of such provocation, Kim admitted that he “finally lowered” himself and called them “racist white trash.”

“It seemed like that hit a bit of a nerve, as they were both taken aback, especially the female racist.”

He said, once he started to video the pair, they backed away, all the while still launching racist abuse.

Kim said, on the urgings of his wife, he reported the incident to the police later that day.

Richmond RCMP confirmed that it has received a complaint and it was investigating “racist slurs and threats” made from one individual to another.

Police tracked down and made contact with the alleged offender and are still investigating.

Kim said, after the incident, he has felt “anger, sadness and mostly disappointment” that these type of “racist flare-ups are happening on a more regular basis.

“We, as a community, need to stand up to this unacceptable way of thinking and behaviour.”

Health chiefs' Botox raid

ealth Canada has issued a warning over the use of botox kits that were being sold and administered at a Richmond business.

The Botulax products were seized last Friday from SPMU-MTS Studio, at 8788 McKim Way, close to Cambie and Garden City roads.

According to Health Canada, the unauthorized, injectable health products, labelled “The Lift II,” pose serious risks to people’s health.

Botulax is labelled to contain botulinum toxin type A and was being administered as an injectable treatment for cosmetic purposes. The Lift II is an absorbable suture, primarily used to close incisions after surgery.

Botulinum toxin type A is used to treat severe muscle spasms in the neck, eye and foot, as well as chronic migraines, incontinence, and excessive sweating. It is also used for cosmetic purposes to treat wrinkling.

Authorized botulinum toxin type A products should only be used under specialist supervision.

Community rallies around dumped HandyDART users Alan Campbell

A

mother and son who were dumped by HandyDART over a new wheelchair policy will soon be able to ride the bus again.

The Richmond News told last week how Milly Venus, 70, and her wheelchair-using son Terry, 51, — who’s had multiple sclerosis since he was 18 — were only two minutes into their journey to Vancouver General Hospital when the driver was forced to do a U-turn.

The mortified driver was ordered over the radio by dispatch to take the Venus family straight back to their Thompson neighbourhood condo because Terry’s lighter, transit wheelchair didn’t meet HandyDART’s new requirements for transportation.

The decision left the mother and son upset and in tears, fearful of missing a longawaited specialist doctor’s appointment.

However, since we reported the story, Milly, who, as well as being the sole, fulltime care-giver for her son, is a part-time custodian at the Ukrainian Community Centre in Richmond, has been inundated with messages of support and offers of mobility devices from strangers.

The News also received several calls from people offering to raise money for a new chair or donate their old one.

“I couldn’t even speak, I was so surprised; it’s been wonderful, everyone has been so

kind,” Milly told the News on Monday.

“It’s comforting to know so many people out there care and that we’re not alone. I never expected this kind of reaction at all.

“The phone has not stopped ringing with messages of support from people I haven’t heard from in years.

“And others have been offering all kinds of help; someone wanted to give Terry one of those electric scooters.”

Before she could seriously consider one of the generous offers, the B.C. government’s local health department contacted her, saying they would arrange a new wheelchair for Terry.

“I’ve to get in touch with Terry’s social worker and they will get him all measured up,” said a delighted Milly.

Milly also got a personal, phone call apology from a manager at MVT, the firm that’s sub-contracted by TransLink to run the HandyDART service.

“She couldn’t have been nicer; she sounded genuinely concerned and gave me her direct line for future reference,” she said.

A HandyDART policy change on Jan. 1, made for “safety reasons,” meant it no longer takes clients using “transport” wheelchairs, which is what Terry has used for years.

However, neither Milly nor the driver of the bus had any knowledge of the change prior to the journey two weeks ago.

New 'Super' should focus on speeding Dear Editor, Re: “Visibility and bilingualism are top priorities: Top cop,” News, March 31.

I read with interest the comments of Richmond’s new RCMP Supt. Will Ng and what his focus will be as he takes command.

I was somewhat disturbed that traffic/vehicular safety did not appear to be on his agenda. I believe many will agree there has been a serious degradation of driving courtesy and safety in Richmond over the past 10-15 years.

Some will attribute this to the arrival of drivers from other parts of the world, and there may be validity to this.

However, it is very noticeable that indifference to driving safety is being shown by long-time residents, regardless of age or ethnicity. It seems not to matter if it is a recent arrival in a BMW, a mom dropping off kids in a minivan at the local school, or some macho redneck dude in his RAM pick-up truck. There is a problem of respecting the safety of other drivers and pedestrians.

Where the problem is getting seriously out of control is in the midst of allegedly quiet, crowded residential areas. I live in the Seafair area and the amount of people who speed in these areas is appalling. I’m sure other neighbourhoods suffer the same. Supt. Ng would be welcome to set up a radar unit in my driveway anytime.

Pedestrians need Super's help Dear Editor, Re: “Visibility and bilingualism are top priorities: Top cop,” News, March 31.

It is reassuring that the new RCMP boss in Richmond, Supt. Will Ng, is hoping to increase the visibility of his force.

It seems that since the headquarters were moved a few years ago from Minoru Boulevard, in the centre of the city, to the Ironwood area, uniformed police have all but disappeared from the local scene, unless there is a traffic accident.

I am not calling for a traditional copper on his beat, but I do believe the occasional presence of a uniform might make our sidewalks safer from those adult cyclists who insist on sharing them with us, even when there are cycle lanes available, and the arrogant driver who tries to play chicken with us as we cross

at a crosswalk with our fingers tightly crossed.

Maybe some of the police now watching for cellphone-using drivers could monitor crosswalks occasionally. Publishing statistics of such infractions might give careless drivers the feeling they, too, are being watched!

It would be interesting to know how many such breakers of the law (cyclists or drivers) are ever apprehended and ticketed, either by the police or the city’s bylaw officers.

I am one of those elderly people, aka seniors, and a constant walker of city streets, whose city fathers, and others, often wring their hands over. Making sidewalks and crossings safer for us would be appreciated by all citizens and not only the less nimble amongst us.

The time is now for hospital tower funds Dear Editor, As a kid, riding my horse and bailing hay in the fields along Westminster Highway, I remember the towering Richmond Hospital as the only building more than three storeys. Over the past 50 years, the hospital and staff have been there for our family through illness, emergencies, operations, deaths and births. We’ve always needed it, and now, it needs all of us.

The provincial government, Richmond MLAs and candidates, need to make binding commitments to invest, now, in our community and dedicate funding for a new Richmond Hospital north tower.

Richmond Hospital is critical infrastructure just like a bridge, a firehall or a police station. In a disaster, natural or humancaused, a hospital quickly becomes a vital epicentre for successfully managing the crisis.

The Richmond Hospital tower, regardless of the dedication of staff, is long past its expiration

date. The replacement of the tower is necessary for several reasons, including patient capacity, modernity and meeting current seismic standards. More so, the tower merits replacement to ensure public safety.

Even in the case of a moderate earthquake, the hospital, including up to 108 beds and eight operating rooms, is at extreme risk with some key assets below the flood plain. Operating rooms, built to outdated standards, are far too small to accommodate modern, state-of-the-art equipment and Richmond has a very

low ratio of beds per population (about one per 1,000 people).

A further sign of the tower’s inadequacy is in the few amount of single rooms. Single rooms are very important in controlling infections and limiting the spread of infections. Richmond Hospital has about 10 per cent single rooms, whereas the effective, modern standard is 80 per cent.

Furthermore, overall, the old tower has an 80 per cent fail rate in terms of a major systems analysis.

In the 1960s, Richmond had

about 60,000 residents and the “new” hospital had about 132 beds. Now, with more than 200,000 residents, our old and outdated hospital has 233 beds.

Richmond’s population will continue to grow to approximately 250,000 by 2030, and the senior population, with the longest life expectancy (85) in Canada, is forecasted to be 65,000.

It’s been 20 years since the need for a Richmond Hospital tower replacement was first identified.

In terms of prioritizing infrastructure capital spending, the provincial government has to match Richmond’s community leadership, which has already raised a very significant percentage of the total cost.

Respect for opinions critical to subvert cult of 'progress' Dear Editor, I read with interest the many letters and opinions on the topic of the LGBTQ policy approved by Richmond’s Board of Education.

I will say at the outset that I have no problem with the policy, even though, initially, I wondered why it was necessary, since gender identity and expression are now included in the B.C. Human Rights code.

What piqued my interest, however, was the use of the word “progressive” by many letter writers.

It is a word attached to political, social and economic discourse and is portrayed as something inherently good and desirable… in a sense, sacrosanct.

“Progressive society,” “progressive policies,” “progressive views,” “progressive school district,” “we would progress even faster”… were all found in some of these letters.

The word progressive in the political sense means change, improvement or social reform. Taken at face

value, who can argue with progress? It is when we start to question what kind of change or social reform or improvement and for whose benefit, to what end and at what cost, that we run into cultural, religious and moral disparity.

For example, some would consider killing (abortion and doctor assisted suicide) as regressive rather than progressive from a societal moral perspective.

In our plural society, the word tolerance also has its limits and constraints.

There are those who do not accept the “antiquated mentality of the past” of some groups with opinions and values that differ with

the progressive ideology.

Others consider and judge someone’s opinion (writing structure aside) as “absurd and laughable” and clearly have no respect or tolerance for Christian values.

There are those who do not respect opinions contrary to the cult of “progress” and the liberal secular ideology.

Social reform can extend into social engineering and political correctness and diversity into identity politics and so on.

Words are not absolute and giving them a “favourable resonance” can occlude much that is important.

Play chronicles a watershed period Philip Raphael

ow do you personalize and make relevant and entertaining a documentary-styled play that focuses on a watershed moment in Canadian political and environmental history?

Montreal playwright Annabel Soutar simply loaded her family into a gas-guzzling Winnebago and embarked on a road trip to the Alberta oil sands and recorded the adventure as they talked with scientists, politicians and everyday people about their views about the country’s fresh water supply.

“It’s unique in the sense that all of the words spoken in the play are drawn from real things people said, whether that’s interviews or recordings,” said Chris Abraham, director of The Watershed, the final production on Gateway Theatre’s calendar for the 2016-17 season that runs on the Main Stage from April 6–15.

“It’s a record of a period of time in our national history where the notion of evidence as something we held as sacred — public discourse in the scientific community and politics

— was under threat by the government.”

The seeds of the story grew from Soutar’s was work on a commission from the Pan-Am Games to write a play about water and her first decision was to turn the gaze on her own family and how they related to fresh water resources across the country, Abraham said.

And through her research into the subject, Soutar became increasingly involved in the fight to save a fresh water lakes research facility in northern Ontario that was losing its federal funding.

“I characterize the play as a very human and funny portrait of Canada at a watershed moment,” said Soutar. “Like everybody in the world, we are facing what scientists tell us is an environmental apocalypse. But we live in a system of consumption and growth that seems to be compete at odds with that notion. And in this play, we see human beings struggling with that collision course we’re on.”

On the contrary, Abraham said the experiences along the way help keep the play’s wheels rolling on a subject that is increasingly popular and relevant for audiences.

“I think there’s certainly an appetite on the part of the public for stories that reflect meaningfully and directly their experience of life,” Abraham said. “I think audiences

are always hungry for the truth. And the theatre is always a good place to go looking for that because the truth is something that is forged in the moment during the interaction between an audience and what happens on stage.”

atrick DeWitt’s The Sisters Brothers is an old western with a modern twist. Even if you don’t like westerns (like me), you might like this one.

Hilarious and grotesque at the same time, The Sisters Brothers is surprisingly funny and doesn’t shy away from a bit of self-reflection.

The callous Eli and Charlie Sisters are legendary as the Commodore’s hired men. Their mission is simply to find their targets and kill them, no questions asked.

Charlie is the lead man and feels no remorse. Eli, the more sentimental of the two, senses that there could be more fulfilling careers

available to him. But he has always backed up his brother. The killing itself seems to come naturally.

Hired to kill Hermann Kermit Warm for reasons they do not need to know, the Sisters’ brothers go perfunctorily about their business. Their assignment takes them to California where gold fever has gripped the state.

The brothers live in the seedy underworld of the 1850s. Throughout their travels they encounter an unappealing and unfortunate cast of characters.

the indifferent brothers), and the sleazy Mr. Mayfield, proprietor of the town of Mayfield, who surrounds himself with sycophants.

The story is narrated by Eli, who, despite being a coldblooded murderer, is an endearing character. Eli would like to fall in love and settle down, and dreams of leaving the nomadic life. Eli and Charlie live on the fringes, and Eli is looking for a way out.

His wish may be fulfilled when the brothers learn of a business proposition that could be their salvation. Like the gold-

crazed prospectors that populate the hills, Eli and Charlie hatch a plan they hope will set them up for life. They have to hustle their way into it, but they’re good at that.

Eli’s growing displeasure at his life of spare brutality is pushing him towards a new path. Little do Eli and Charlie expect the calamitous mishaps that follow.

DeWitt has a knack for making ugly realities into comedic episodes — do not underestimate the humour in this grim tale. Entertaining and tragic, The Sisters Brothers is more than a standard western. As the brothers grapple with their own beliefs, childhoods and futures, these psychopaths reinvent themselves, for better or for worse.

T

he efforts of volunteers, who helped preserve and promote one of Richmond’s historical icons, is earning some recognition. Last week, the Fraser River Discovery Centre in New Westminster announced it was awarding a spot in its hall of fame for the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society.

Since 1986, the society has worked, along with Parks Canada, to help tell the story of the local fishing industry through the massive building that was built at the southern end of Steveston’s Third Avenue in 1894. It earned the title as the “monster cannery” for its size among the dozen or more dotted along the waterfront that was referred to as “cannery row.”

“I got hooked on this thing because by dad was one of the founding members,” said Dave Semple, who is the society’s chair and also general manager of community services with the City of Richmond. “And it was preserved to ensure the whole story about the local history of fishing was told.”

Semple said the site is an incredible resource and the community should be proud and fortunate to have retained it.

“In Steveston, you’ve got the cannery and Garry Point at one end, the Steveston Post Office and Museum, the (Interurban) Tram and Britannia (Heritage Shipyard). You look at all of these legacies of what the past was about and it’s pretty cool,” Semple said. “But what makes the gulf (cannery) special is the volunteers who have made it what it is.”

At the moment, the society has a good blend of talented young members and elders who are helping keep the stories alive and relevant.

“The cannery has become a very important link because you’ve got to learn from the past to create the future,” Semple said. “And the future is the wild fish as a sustainable food product. That’s the key to what our society is about.”

One of the upcoming projects the society is working on to illustrate the demands of the local fishing industry is a video of what it’s like to be on board a gillnetter.

“We’re going to have a camera onboard one of the boats when the season starts and show what it’s like to set a net and what happens when you start to bring in the salmon,” Semple said. “It’s a pretty amazing sight.

Before 1820 many companies had copper tokens manufactured in England (1/2 penny and 1 penny tokens) and had them shipped over here.

This worked out well because they had the equal value of copper for their value.Then other merchants had similar tokens manufactured with a lesser weight, thereby cheating the public. There are well over 1,000 different varieties of these type of tokens.

Then the governments of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia started issuing their tokens.

These were proper weights and had the portraits of King George III or after 1838 Queen Victoria. Ontario and Quebec were called Upper and Lower Canada respectively. Each had their own tokens issued from merchants as well as government banks.

By 1858 Canada (Ontario & Quebec only) issued a one cent, five cent, ten cent and a twenty cent coin. New Brunswick issued one, five, ten and twenty cent coins between 1962 and 1864.

Nova Scotia only issued one cent coins in 1861, 1862 and 1864. Prince Edward Island had only a one cent coin issued in 1871.

Newfoundland was the most prolific issuer even in the 1860s because they issued not only the one, five, ten and twenty cent coins but they also issued $2 gold coins.

British Columbia never issued coins but there were $10 and $20 gold pieces struck in New Westminster in 1862. These were never allowed to be put into circulation and are extremely rare.

Every year we have people who bring in the 1962 copies of these thinking they are the real coins.

What dolls, eyes, insects and puppies have in common SABINEEICHE In other words

H

ave you ever wondered how it came about that some words with seemingly unconnected meanings are nevertheless connected etymologically — for example, pupil, puppet and puppy? In this instance, the Latin word for girl, “pupa,” is the first element in the long and curiously linked chain.

“Pupa” was also what the ancient Romans called a doll (the English word doll is the pet-form of Dorothy), presumably because dolls looked like miniature girls.

“Pupa” gave rise to several words, which in turn spawned others. “Pupilla,” the diminutive of “pupa,” was the Latin word for an orphaned girl. It became “pupille”

in Middle French (14th-15th centuries) and referred to both girl and boy orphans.

Late Middle English (15th century) took the Middle French “pupille” and transformed it into pupil, with the meaning of orphan in charge of a guardian. The modern sense of pupil — someone who is taught by another — dates from the 16th century.

At about the same time, the Middle French “pupille” (from “pupilla,” orphan) made its way into English as the word for pupil of the eye. The Latin “pupa” (doll) provides the connection because it’s said that by looking into someone’s eyes you can see yourself reflected in miniature in the dark circle within the iris. Incidentally, the same thing happened in ancient Greek with the word “kore,” which means girl, doll as well as pupil of the eye (the Greek philosopher Plato wrote, in the First Alcibiades, “we see our own image in another’s eyes”).

Middle French turned “pupa” into “poupée” and “poupette” to refer to doll. Middle English then transformed “poupette” into “popet,” which by the 16th century had developed into puppet, originally meaning both a child’s doll and a small figure representing a human or an animal.

The doll — “pupa” — connection explains the history of the word puppy as well. In earlier centuries, as now, dogs were popular domestic animals. Men kept large dogs for hunting while ladies favoured small breeds, which they could carry around with them.

In the 15th century, this type of lap dog, really a plaything of the upper-class lady, was known in English as “popi,” based on the Middle French “poupée” (doll). Over the next hundred years or so “popi” became puppy, signifying a young dog.

In the 18th century, the word “pupa” was

given yet another role to play by the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus. When devising his Latin taxonomy (classification) of insects that undergo complete metamorphosis, Linnaeus gave the term pupa to the third developmental stage (after the larva and before the imago or adult). English did not Anglicise Linnaeus’ term, but Dutch and German did transform it into their own languages — “pop” and “Puppe” — which also happen to be the Dutch and German words for doll.

No doubt there are other words like “pupa” that have rambled and digressed through centuries of language. Certainly more words are cut free from their moorings all the time. What will some curious logophile (lover of words) in the year 3017 think of the meanderings of window, mouse and cloud, I wonder?

he privilege of living in Canada is not lost on Jerika Caduhada, a Grade 12 student at McMath secondary.

That’s why she and a dedicated group of fellow classmates, as well as colleagues from across the Lower Mainland, have concluded the most successful charity drive of their young, non-profit organization Uniform Dream Society, which provides school uniforms and supplies to impoverished, underprivileged students around the world.

“Canada is known as a nation of immigrants, so a lot of us still have a lot of connections to other places. So this is

a way to give back,” said Jerika.

The society was founded in 2013 by students, most of whom come from newly-immigrated families.

The society has, to date, focused on schools in Asia, as projects tend to have a personal connection to its high school members, who have established branches in six schools across the Lower Mainland, including at McMath.

Uniform Dream Society has helped properly clothe young students in: New Delhi, India; Guizhou, China; Han Zhong, China; Anhui, China and, now, Bacolod City, Philippines.

The latter project is the biggest of them all, with students having raised close to $10,000 for uniforms and some supplies for the 800 students at Luis Puentabella elementary school.

The donation has a personal connection to Jerika, herself a Filipino-Canadian.

“A lot of the parents have lowpaying jobs and the students face a lot of challenges at school, such as malnutrition and poverty.

The school itself doesn’t have many

up-to-date facilities,” explained Jerika, who pitched the school to the society after speaking to a family member who suggested helping Luis Puentabella.

It’s those family connections that help create bonds between the students’ lives in Canada and their former homeland.

Grade 12 McMath student and society president Carol Wang said she recalls wearing a school uniform in China, prior to moving to Canada at a young age. She said in most Asian countries, uniforms are required and not having one can result in social problems for a student. Plus, uniforms are a good equalizer among the students and they are more culturally acceptable than in the West.

Brian Colbert, of Prince of Wales secondary school in Vancouver, said Uniform Dream Society was the right fit for him to contribute some of his free time to.

“I know there are a lot of non-profits out there but I like how this is really specific. I can also relate because my mom in her childhood grew up in a poor village [in China] and had similar struggles pursuing an education herself,” said Brian.

Now in its fifth year, the society is run by students in Grades 11 and 12, who annually seek new members, who tend to have a strong passion for global affairs, education and volunteer work.

Wang said she wants to expand the society’s reach to include local projects.

n Monday, March 27, 26 students from Lord Byng elementary school, with teacher Sandy Wilson, arrived at the Maple Residences to interview and video consenting seniors.

The 12-year-old Grade 7 youngsters were armed with an iPad and six questions pertaining to Canada’s 150 years.

Two students were assigned to each senior, one with an iPad and the other to interview. Separate meeting places were set up in halls or unused rooms where each interview could be as private as possible.

I was lucky in having two very polite and intelligent boys, Liam the interviewer and Abdul the videographer.

I’ll share the questions with you. They are thoughtprovoking, things which we, for the most part, take for granted. And so here they are.

What is the memory or story you have of an important event in Canada’s 150-year-old history?

ne of the key determinants of physical and emotional health — and therefore, happiness itself — is our sense of belonging, our connection with our community.

Yet most of us go through our lives as distinctly separate individuals. Siblings compete with one another (as do spouses). We begin our lives in school focused on individual achievement (or failure). In sports, we compete with an “us versus them” mindset.

Competition spreads to every part of adult life. We compete for jobs to earn more and get ahead. We compete for our homes. We fight traffic in our daily commutes. What is traffic? Other people.

We compete as we compare ourselves with others, and we judge others — just as we know others are judging us — by the clothes we wear, the cars we drive and the symbolic prestige of particular mundane items of utility — phones, shoes, purses and watches.

When we follow this mainstream way of thinking, the natural conclusion is we all lose. By the end of this life, you will lose all you have gained.

Everything you have built will one day be gone, and in a few generations, your name will be forgotten. What’s the point of it all?

How you tell your personal story — how you see yourself and how you relate to other people and the rest of the world — impacts your emotional wellbeing and your capacity for enduring happiness.

The inescapable truth is this: you are not a separate, independent individual; you are a global citizen interdependent with every other person on this planet.

Your wellbeing is dependent on the wellbeing of others.

The “me against the world” and “us versus them” story disconnects us from others and dehumanizes them; they become objects in the way or objects to be used. In reality, we have more in common with every other being on this planet than we realize.

We each have hopes and dreams, pain and pleasure, joys and sorrows.

We experience the same range of emotions and we are all subject to illness, misfortune, aging and death. We can unconsciously adopt maladaptive core beliefs and get stuck in narrowed points of view, yet we each have the capacity to change and grow.

This recognition can awaken compassion. We share our vulnerability, and we share our responsibility.

The big problems of our society and the world will never be solved by people — and countries — looking out for themselves. As long as we see one another as separate and competing individuals, we will continue to see abuse, crime, homelessness, hunger, terrorism and war.

When more of us realize our interdependence and connection with the global community and all life on this planet, we will see the positive evolution of humanity and life on Earth.

It begins with you. Together, let us be the change we wish to see.

ichmond FC has become the first community club in the province to be awarded a new certification designed to enhance the sport of soccer in B.C. Last week, BC Soccer announced that Richmond FC was the first of its members to achieve the organization’s new Club Charter Standard 1 designation, which is said to be a rigorous process assessing the club’s technical, governance and administrative departments.

By achieving the new standard, Richmond FC, according to BC Soccer, now provides players, parents, coaches and referees the “assurance that (it) operates within a high level…all while providing a more supportive environment for players to develop.”

“It took a lot of work,” said Rein Webster, Richmond FC chair, adding that, as far as he’s aware, Richmond was well ahead of other clubs chasing the same certification.

“Some of it was governance and everyone had to have their checks done, their coaching certificates and the technical side of things had to be right.

“What BC Soccer is trying to do is create a uniformed standard. This gives us credibility and parents are safe in the knowledge that everything is in place.

“Technically, we’re now in a good place to deliver long-term programming for the kids.”

Webster said club staff and volunteers have

put in countless hours since last September to meet and surpass BC Soccer’s guidelines for the new gold standard for community clubs.

“We took this on as a priority last year and everyone has worked so hard for this to make sure everything was right. We really wanted to be at the forefront of this push,” he said.

“We had visits from BC Soccer, watching us delivering the programs and going through all our paperwork.

“Our goal is to have 80 per cent of the coaches have the correct certification, all the way from house to metro.

“We’re almost there now and we’re also fine-tuning a mentorship program, whereby the more senior coaches and volunteers can

help the younger or less experienced ones.”

Webster added that, other than the fact the certification “gives the parents the comfort levels that we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing,” from a player perspective, “it lets them know that they’re going to be trained in the right way.

“They’ll be given every opportunity to develop, and if they want to go on a higher path, they can.

“We want to make sure that everyone learns soccer and learns to love the game. “(The certification also) gives us credibility and cache, to a certain extent.”

Webster said achieving the new standard might also help fulfill one of the club’s ambitions; to host the National A Championships.

“With a bit of development of facilities, such as the Boyd clubhouse, I think we would be able to do that,” he said.

“BC Soccer might get behind something like that, now that we have this certification.”

“Richmond FC worked closely with BC Soccer staff and have shown their dedication to having all their coaches properly trained while also working hard to meet all of the other technical, governance and administrative standards outlined. Congratulations Richmond Youth Soccer Association,” said Chris Cerroni, BC Soccer’s director of soccer development, in a press release.

Richmond FC has more than 1,200 youth players at its club, with more than 50 coaches and hundreds of volunteers.

BC Soccer said the new Club Charter will “further enhance the game across B.C. and provide clubs with the direction and support they need to continue to build and develop their programming, providing a platform for coach, referee, and parent education, with the ultimate goal of putting the development needs of the players first.”

Currently, there are more than 50 clubs from around the province that have opted into BC Soccer’s Club Charter program and are working toward achieving Standard 1.

Richmond FC and all other clubs who achieve Standard 1 will have to uphold such standards moving forward and those clubs will also have the opportunity to apply for the BC Soccer Club Charter Standard 2, once released later in 2017.

Fashion collections hit the runway in grad finale Philip Raphael

t’s going to be a grad celebration unlike any other for a trio of Richmond students and their classmates in the Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU).

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings (April 5 and 6), students in the Fashion Design and Technology program will be displaying results from skills they’ve amassed over the past four years to produce apparel that will be displayed on the runway during the program’s annual fashion show at the Imperial Vancouver on the eastern edge of Gastown.

Each of the students will have an opportunity to show three of their outfits from the line they developed over the course of their final school year.

“We started designing last September and the whole second semester has been about producing the collection,” said Emily Wong, 24, who graduated from Burnett secondary where she first started sewing in a Grade 8 textiles class.

“I am very visual and like doing hands-on crafts, that’s why I got into it. Plus, my aunt used to sew and owned a little boutique. So, watching her, and my mom, also, was a lot of fun and I wanted to be good at it.”

But it took some work.

“No, I wasn’t all that good at the start,” she said. “I thought it would be easy. And I thought that because my mom did it, I should be good at it, too,” she said. “But it took me a little while.”

Classmate Roxanne Lee, 31, and a grad from McRoberts secondary, said her interest in apparel design came from a deep-seated love for clothes.

“I’ve always loved clothes,” Lee said. “And I’ve always wanted to know how they were made.

“Plus, I’ve always been

crafty, as well,” she said, adding that after completing her biology degree at UBC she got to a point in her life that she wanted another challenge.

“So, I went for it and entered the program,” she said.

As for Spencer Varsek, 23, a grad of Richmond secondary, his love for fashion design also stemmed from a textiles class in high school.

“I wanted to create things and my favourite class in school was textiles,” Varsek said. “I had a passion for clothing and apparel design.

So, when I heard about the degree program at Kwantlen I thought it was really exciting.

Plus, it’s always been a goal of mine to get a university degree.”

As for the lines they will be showing later this week, each of the three have very different target markets.

Wong said her line is focused on the generation X woman.

“It’s designed so she can take it from work to the evening,” Wong said. “Plus, it’s meant for women with the income to make smart decisions about where their clothes come from.”

It’s a nod to SLOW fashion, Wong said, explaining it is meant to emphasise a move away from clothing that is mass-produced in, often, unethical ways.

Lee’s line is targeted at women aged 40 to 50 who are artistic and are drawn towards colourful, bright clothing.

“And they possess a sense of humour and want to have fun with the way they look,” Lee said. “They also like mixing and matching.”

Varsek’s line was inspired by his mom’s demographic.

“It caters to their needs in terms of fit, price point and fabric,” he said. “It’s inspired by the mid-century modern movement in terms of colours, styles and fabrics.”

But away from the glitz and glamour of the fashion showcase, all three know

the opportunity to display their work is only part of the exercise.

The chance to interact with the audience and network with their peers in the industry is important, too.

“The instructors always emphasise how the industry is so close-knit,” Wong said.

Minoru hosts marquee matches I

t was a triple header of marquee soccer matches Sunday at Minoru Oval for the Richmond Adult Soccer Association, which hosted an all-star game, President’s Cup for second division teams and Challenge Cup Final for first division sides.

In the all-star contest, Team Blue was led by Duncan Wood, a member of the second division Young Bloods team, as they triumphed to a 4-3 win over Team White.

In the President’s Cup match, Club Ireland Celtic romped to a 4-1 win over Firefighters FC. It was Club Ireland’s third cup final appearance in a row and the first time Firefighters FC had made it to the title game.

Club Ireland’s Matt Estepho slotted home a pair of goals, while Steve Valenzuela and Matt Leversage added singles for the win.

In the first division battle for the Challenge Cup, West Coast FC edged Rain City 2-1 in a hard fought contest.

This was West Coast FC’s first appearance in the Challenge Cup and first year in the first division The result sends the squad on to the provincial finals, which features opening round play starting on April 22. The finals are scheduled for May in Burnaby.
